Hey guys, just a correction, the built in thermal Flir Lepton module is actually 80x60, and not 120x160. I was basing my info on what little early information was available, but further testing has confirmed it is the lower resolution of 80x20.
eco logic Yeah, that is because the flir MSX overlay resolution has increased to 1080P but the actual thermal resolution is unfortunately still only 80x60
Sooo... where did you go on 07-07-2018, saturday? There is a red bar in the VOC sensor data, I think at around either 10 o clock in the evening or maybe even a bit later on. Was that somewhere where people were smoking? Was it car / road -location related? Because this data would be nice to log too for health nuts :-D Too bad about the low resolution of the FLIR cam/heat sensor. I would really like this phone to help out in fault finding of SMD components in circuitry. But at these resolutions.... nah, that only delivers an approximation of an area, not exact enough to pinpoint for example an IC or SMD capacitor, so still alcohol, petrol or freeze spray has to be used. Dunno...
Dude, many thanks for the time and effort you've put into your reviews of the S61, I'm sure there are many like myself that were sitting on the sidelines waiting to bite the bullet on this piece of kit and waiting for a genuinely honest appraisal, which you delivered, well done. Mine arrived yesterday and so far i'm having a ball with it, in my line of work I tend to destroy phones rapidly and needed something heavy duty to hopefully survive in my work environment and the TIC ,VOC, etc are all just extras. We use FlIR TIC's on the job and when I get a chance I might do a side by side comparison but still won't be disappointed by the S61, to have all this bundled into a phone is a great package and I got a great deal online too so happy days! :)
I tend to destroy all my phones pretty quickly too. I'm wondering if this phone would be good for the work that I do as an auto-mechanic with my phone by my side all the time, ordering parts and watching youtube videos when I'm stuck. I'm just wondering where I can get these in Canada.
Thanks for the review. I own this phone for over a year now, it has been everywhere... in a whirlpool, in salt water, on the construction site...no signs of wear. and indeed, even on a long day out, the battery won't let you down. Really awesome piece of tech!
@@tomthompson8875 still fine. no scratches on the display and battery is still fit, holding up to two days by average use (google now and then, some music during breaks, hotspot for my tablet.) the android os was also recently updated to 9.
Finally, when the camera brackets turn green, take the pic and it's instant. If you take the pic before it goes green, it'll seem like you took the pic but it won't actually capture anything until it's focused and turns green. The front facing camera is instant.
You got it, man! Glad you found my video informative! Also I might as well ask if you've been able to figure out if there's actually a "wet hand mode"? Because I know there's an underwater mode for the camera, but nothing for the touch screen. The manual and sales materials touted the ease of use with wet hands but I've found it to be as impossible to control as any other capacitive touch screen.
Gerry926 Haha I gotcha. I mean I know glove mode works, it seems to turn up the sensitivity, but that doesn't help with wet hands, it makes things worse.
Same here, my S8 broke just being in my pocket. The worst designed phone ever in terms of durability, the screen is designed so if it breaks you have to replace the entire outer casing including speakers, microphones, front facing camera, etc. Cost me 250$ to fix 2 months ago and it's already broken again.
They have a special case for it. It has anti-shock absorbent corners and a rigid plastic body. It comes with a durable belt clip that swivels 180° and secure carabiner attachments for ease of access. All controls and features can be easily accessed through the openings in the case
Are you referring to the urban active case? I've actually made a video on it. It's not perfect either, but it does provide a lot more protection. Thanks for commenting! ua-cam.com/video/5Vv_B7AaAsE/v-deo.html
Nice video you made, thanks. At 15:09 you talked about the lag of export option for the air quality measure result(s) Maybe you could take snapshots of the results and send this to where the results have to go. If you’re this source you can store it in a specific folder on your phone. Hope this helped you any further. When the speaker is wet and sounds mushy maybe at that point you could use a headset dry mic and dry (ear) speaker. Bye and thanks again for you video good job.
I wanted to buy the S60, the design was good but one thing that I hated was the flaps covering the SIM and SD card. The S61 seems great but I guess I'll wait a little longer to see what are the bugs and hardware issues people encounter about it before buying one.
I really hoped the S61 would have an anchor point for a tether and carabiner as that would have been my main reason to upgrade from my S60. Considering the demographic for this phone it seems like it would be an obvious touch. So far, the S61 has been impossible to find at any retailer here in Canada.
Johnny5 Yeah a lanyard loop was something I would have really liked to see as well. And that's unfortunate, have you checked with overseas electronics from the link in the description? Its where I got my phone.
To all users cat s61. How it works? is everything ok with this phone? charging, waterproof ,battery. I would like to buy it ,but i'm confused... is this good choice this Cat s61?
FYI, stainless steel is dramatically more expensive from a manufacturing standpoint for a complex cast and machined part like this frame. Hardly worth it for a slight increase in some properties. In fact, depending on the exact alloys, specific modulus (rigidity vs weight, roughly) is nearly identical between them. You could maybe thin the phone out slightly with SS. But not enough to matter on this chonk.
I had the Cat S60 and it was a great phone but I'm wanting the Cat S61 since the Flir Thermal Imaging Camera works at higher temps which is important with roof leaks and roofs being so hot. I think the laser distance measuring needs to work at further distances (currently 8m or 24 feet). I would of liked to see actual demos of the features in the phone in your video, showing the phone picking up VOC levels and measuring something and also using the Thermal Imaging Camera.
Hey man, thanks for watching! Videos on the VOC detector and measurement tool are coming, but check out my thermal camera test video here: ua-cam.com/video/8RpFZETWCso/v-deo.html
As an owner of a samsung galaxy s7 active for a couple years now, I've been looking for a worthwhile upgrade from a rugged line that samsung has pretty much discontinued at this point. This phone looks like a great contender. Any other recommendations for rugged smartphones?
Well if you're concerned about the aluminum chassis like I was, you can get the rugged urban active case directly from Cat Phones. Check out my video on it here: ua-cam.com/video/5Vv_B7AaAsE/v-deo.html
You all say that the thermal camera is upgraded with a better resolution of 160x120 pixels. Looking at CAT site and the original manual is says that is ONLY upgaded at the thermal range up to 400c and keep the same resolution of 80x60 as the S60!
Yes it has come to all of our attentions that in fact the thermal resolution is still only 80x60. If you take a look at the pinned comment, you will see I issued this correction. This confusion was largely due to misinformation spread by Caterpillars own technical support chat. Check out my nighttime thermal test where I highlight my experience dealing with support: ua-cam.com/video/wbpE6dZf_T0/v-deo.html
The reason they used aluminum I’m assuming is for salt water resistance. Aluminum DOES NOT CORODE, steel does. Stainless steel is more resistant to corrosion, but how many times have you seen a cheap rusted out pocket knife with a blade of stainless steel. It’s called stainLESS steel, not stainNEVER steel.
EdgeRunner Aluminum certainly does corrode. Enough working on cars from the north east to tell you that with consistent contact with salt water, begins to cause aluminum to corrode into a crumbly white powder. Anodization helps, but it still can corrode. I do agree it may be less, but I'm still of the opinion they could have gone with a strong stainless steel for the inner frame and for what's exposed, used something with similar corrosion resistence properties as H1 blade steel. It is specificallt designed for Mariners and use at sea and is widely considered to be rust proof.
The other possibility is a titanium or titanium alloy. It is as strong as steel but lighter (strong as in strong enough) and very corrosion resistant. The tradeoff is titanium scratches more easily, but then it could be coated to mitigate some of that.
@@nitetrekker Well it does have some good qualities in the strength department but titanium is extremely brittle. So it wouldn't be great for a rugged phone designed to withstand drops.
Titanium can be brittle depending on the heat treatment (e.g. done with oxygen) but it's not necessarily brittle. Also it has already been used in the Essential Phone specifically because of it's strength in the drop test vs aluminum.
hi, nice review. aluminium is actually more rigid than steel. that's why it gets micro fractures when it bends/dents. and that's why it's more fragile than steel. steel will absorb shock better because it's less rigid.
Well aluminum may have a greater strength to weight ratio, but steel is still harder, stronger and more resident scratches and dents. I personally wouldn't have minded a heavier phone if it meant a frame with slightly more flex and a lot more resistance to serious frame damage.
@@ctuan13 I agree, steel is real. I have one question about this phone. I'm a bike messenger and i'm looking for a rugged phone that is usable in the rain. I need to use my phone while outside and most phones instantly develop down syndrome when the screen gets drops of water on it. is this phone usable in the wet? thanks!
@@ctuan13 Aluminum is the right choice in my opinion. It's lower cost and the increase in weight to steel would not be negligible. If price is no issue then maybe go straight up to titanium.
How's the GPS on this phone? Does it drain the battery quick and make the phone hot if you use waze or google maps? I have the s9+ but will be giving it to my wife if this phone is quick enough for waze and when switching to other apps like chrome, phone, sms. I drive daily to different areas in the metroa area so the GPS is very important and apps switching(or multi-tasking). TIA.
istik Battery life on this phone is impressive no matter what I'm doing and I haven't noticed any extra heat while using GPS navigation. In terms of switching apps quickly and the like, you have to keep in mind it still only has a snapdragon 630 and 4 gigs of ram. No slouch but not cutting edge either. I haven't experienced noticeable excessive lag but I would say it will likely be a smidge slower than your S9 plus.
Hi, How would you compare the flir quality to another flir product? Is it like the one pro? C2? Tg165? Or just the basic one? I was thinking of buying a thermal camera but having it directly on the phone is the best for me. So if it works as well as a pro one why not buying the phone!
Can you compare in video S61 and S41? S41 is with lower spec, but has that comfy rubber case, the battery (by spec) is slightly better and I am curious how much they are comparable
Yeah man, for sure. If you've seen all the other videos I've made about the issues I've had with this phone, you'll see why I'm waiting on the next one! Thanks for watching!
My flooded S60 camera cleared up, so I'll keep it for another couple years or till its battery gets weak. The S61 is definitely an upgrade in every way, though premium priced
The Lepton module is 80x60, Flir told me this directly. I only have the S61, so I don't have the real comparion, but if it really is the higher res, its funny that they (CAT, Bullit and Flir) don't know what they make. Smells like something is too cheap to mention. The camera is actually faster, you had the hdr on. I was wondering about this too. with hdr off, you can even do burst and its pretty fast.
On the camera, I understand that, I had HDR on, but I was making the comparison in speed with my iPhone, also with HDR on and there is still no comparison. My bad for not mentioning this in the video. In terms of the lepton module, it now seems you are correct, my mistake. I was going off of early data and info from people that has turned out to be wrong. I spoke with Cat directly about the resolution and they sent me a spec sheet, detailing a module with a resolution of 120x160. But it appears they simply don't know what they are doing and sent me a spec sheet on the lepton 3 module and not what's in the S61. Because the thermal resolution still seems just as crunchy as on the S60. This is all dissapointing, but what's even more dissapointing is that Cat doesn't even appear to know what they are selling.
Unfortunately headphones do not come in the box. All that comes with the phone is the charger, USB cable and manual. Hope this helps! You can also check out my full unboxing video here: ua-cam.com/video/8PxgwXRllGk/v-deo.html
first of all that was hell of a helpful review!! the second thing is about the slow shutter: it looks like u have activated the HDR, that would explain the slow shutter. 🤔
Matt Matteisen Thanks man! I appreciate the kind words! As to your point about HDR, I wish I would have remembered to show this on camera, but the image capture speed was incredibly slow even with HDR switched off. This was however fixed and functioning great with an update and then was subsequently broken by an update after that. 😬😑
Great review video and thanks for taking the time to go through the visible light camera.. Have you any low light pics tests? How did you find the video? Either in HD or 4K, and a quick question was there any stabilization with video recording? Firefighter here and wanting to know before I take the plunge and order one of these bad boys.
hihomord Hey man, thanks for watching! To answer some of your questions, low light performance isn't great, but is passable. The video was about on par with the pictures as well. I mention in the Camera section of my review that there is no stabilization of any kind digital or optical. Even with a few shortcomings, I still think you'll be hard-pressed to find a better rugged smartphone! If you're considering buying, you'll save 200 bucks buying from Overseas Electronics like I did. I left the link in the description! Hope this helps!
Great and best detailed review. You're good at this. :) Mine will be delivered today. Now i know what to expect. I bought it because i am a plumber/pipefitter and have found the flir one to help me in many ways in the past. It will be nice not to have an extra gadget to pack around. As a novice, i dont think this would be the phone for you because of the lack of power compaired to other phones. But if you are in construction and would use its features almost on a daily basis then yes.... buy it! :) Edit: I am in agreement with you... but... forget the extra $100... with this price it should already have a top of the line camera with stabilization. That was almost a deal breaker for me.
The camera images from both the S60 and S61 are better than iPhone except in high dynamic range, I do not know what do you expect from a camera. The front camera on the iPhone is junk because of the software processing. Have you checked the shutter speed on the S61? maybe it's slow because you chose a slow shutter speed.
Hi ctuan13 Thank you for the nice video. Are you still using the CAT S61? There was a Software-Update a few days ago and since then the camera is so much improved! It's amazing now. Working very good and no blurry pictures anymore. Now it's a decent phone 💪 Greets Dennis
Hey Dennis, yes I'm still using it as my daily driver! It's been great! There have been several updates and one provided a big improvement to the camera for sure. I'll be making an update video on that soon!
Hey, sorry to blow up your channel. I'll do my own review when my new phone comes. Looks like I'm sending this one back for the blown mono speaker. They offered a repair but in not starting off with a repaired phone. Besides, it's still under warranty, so why not? Even the tiny hardware reset button, next to sim card didn't help. Sounds like the voice coil is blown. Still the best phone for me at the moment and I'm definitely getting another one.
Gerry926 Hey man, no worries. It's just good to hear other people's experience with this for the most part, rare phone. It helps not only me, but all my viewers. So when did this speaker issue arise? What does it sound like? Did you by chance get the speaker wet? Because if so, you'll need to play sound through the speaker on high volume for a bit and tap it out to clear the water.
ctuan13 The speaker issue may have been caused by a music or ringtone app but I'm pretty sure it wasn't sounding like your sound clip. From the beginning, it sounded like the speaker driver was pressed against something and waa a bit distorted. Now, there's just an annoying buzz and you can't make out voices or hear the ringer. I didn't get the phone wet or drop it at all. It's on the way back to them and I'm getting another one right away. Right now, I'm using a $40 LG phone and the 5mp camera is as good as on the Cat. The audio through the 3.5mm Jack is actually louder than my Cat puts out. That's a bit disappointing but no other phone checks the remaining boxes for me like the Cat. Thanks for your patience as well.
So, I got my new S61 today and so far, so good! Seems like everything, including the camera, works better than the first one. Audio output is far better too.
ZAMsChannel Yeah I noticed that as well, unfortunately, I think that's the longest interval available. Hopefully, Cat adds an always on option in an update.
Thanks for answering so quickly. Have you tested if it remains on when externally supplied with power? How shall one use it with a navigation app on a vehicle when it turns off after 30 minutes? Do you know any solution for that?
ZAMsChannel Sure thing! Welll I haven't tested that exactly, but I do know I was able to use Google maps and it didn't seem to lock on me, but I'll have to do more testing at some point. I know it doesn't seem to lock on me if I'm watching video.

Im from Brazil and i love your video, was very instructive!!! Thanks!!!
All hardware tools should be wireless CAT grade accessories and should be AMOLED and steroid battery. Sure thing we might pair the cat wireless accesories to other phone but CAT can surely provide accurate computing for their own device.
That processor, RAM, and camera are fine. This isn't a powerhouse or flagship phone. It's a rugged phone. It's not supposed to have the best hardware, it's supposed to be the toughest. The price comes from the toughness and FLIR camera. Also, standalone FLIR cameras take a long time to boot up too , so that's not the fault of the phone either.
Very good review! Yes It's really good phone but the biggest problem is the ram. I have the same problem with my BlackBerry KeyOne and I searching for a next phone, I would like to buy CAT S61 but I scared from ram. :-/
It is an incredible phone when it comes to features and external design, but given how many hardware failures and warranty claims I've had to make, I can no longer recommend this phone.
Hello again. I'm wondering if anyone using At&t, is having issues with dropped calls and text. Trying to figure out if it's the new S61 or the network. They say, they're working on the towers for 5g upgrade and it can affect towers. Thanks!
Hey man, I use AT&T. I have since day one. I haven't had any issues with calls or texts as long as I have signal. My guess is towers in your area. Although it could be a fluke with your particular phone as well. Maybe try driving to a completely distant area and see if you still experience the same issues.
@@ctuan13 thanks for the reply. Turns out, it's the device..again. Burner phone works fine. I'll try the S61 again in a few months, when business slows down. You should make a video on how to use the flir tools to generate thermal reports! It was my favorite thing to add to invoices. Cheers!
@@Gerry926 Will do! I'll try to do that in a future video! But have you contacted CAT? This level of disfunction is unacceptable. This needs to be covered under warranty.
@@ctuan13 Cat has been great to deal with. I bought directly from them and I already have a shipping label for the second return. 3rd times the charm but not just yet. I'm obsessed with thermal imaging now, Lol. So I'll put a Flir pro one and a rugged case on my next phone for now and revisit the S61, down the line.
Yeah I agree, unless something is funky with the most recent update (which did temporarily remove thermal livestreaming), it would appear the resolution is 80x60. I did some testing and the thermal resolution just is really crunchy. What's weird though, is that I spoke with a Cat representative who when I asked about the S61 thermal resolution, sent me this data sheet. You'll see it appears to be the correct data sheet and lists the thermal resolution as 120x160. Well all I can hope is that it's just a software bug. But I am very confused for sure. OVERVIEW Effective Frame Rate 8.8 Hz (commercial application exportable) Input Clock 25-MHz nominal, CMOS IO Voltage Levels Output Format User-selectable 14-bit, 8-bit (AGC applied), or 24-bit RGB (AGC and colorization applied) Pixel Size 12 µm Scene Dynamic Range Low Gain Mode: up to 450°C; High Gain Mode: up to 150°C Spectral Range Longwave infrared, 8 µm to 14 µm Temperature Compensation Automatic. Output image independent of camera temperature. Thermal Sensitivity
@ctuan13: That´s exactly the same tech info I also got in a chat with Cat support. It is not, however, the specs for the S61 phone, but for the Lepton 3 sensor, a device NOT used in the S61. Apparently Cat tech support don't have a clue on their own turf... Maybe this isn't even an issue for Cat, as they are only marketing a branded product from the british OEM manufacturer Bullit-Group, which is the company that is actually producing the Cat phones. Bullit-Group is also making phones for Land-Rover and (hold on to your hat) Kodak!, Kodak being the company that actually invented digital imaging in the 1970's... bullitt-group.com/brand-partners/
Bo Tingsten Ahh okay, yeah that makes sense. Yeah it's unfortunate but it's still not a deal breaker for me. Its just frustrating that there is so much incorrect data out there. Even clove electronics, an authorized retailer for Cat Phones, stated in a UA-cam video that the thermal resolution was stepped up to 120x160. But it just clearly isn't.
Interestingly, Cat doesn't mention the thermal resolution at all in their presentation of the S61. Improved resolution (four times more pixels) in the thermal device would certainly be something to be marketed hard. But this is what gives: "The Cat S61 includes several improvements over its predecessor, including a larger 5.2-inch screen, laser assisted distance measurement to measure point-to-point distances up to 10 meters, an indoor air quality sensor, and an increased thermal temperature reading range of minus 20 to 400 degrees Celsius."
Bo Tingsten Yeah, it's looking like we've still got the same crunchy thermal resolution. Honestly, this combined with the visible light cameras being better but not quite where I'd like, just makes me feel like they would have been much better off selling this thing for $1200 and just upping the quality of the components.
Good review! Ahh, man, I like aluminum, lol. Scratch that stainless and you'll be more upset. 4 gigs is keeping up with my Note 8. My Note 8 is in a Unicorn Beetle case and the S61 feels like the same weight. The S61 is also far more comfortable to use, one handed. I'm a full time, home improvement contractor. I used the thermal on day one to find a leak in an ac line and search for squatters in abandoned building. The measurement tool is ok, as long as i can control the ambient lighting. It's good for measuring angles, like in attics... as long as you're not aiming at the window. The voc sensor is cute but doesn't detect most things I'm exposed to. Wasn't expecting a mass spectrometer, lol. But I spilled pvc cement in the truck and it didn't detect it, even though I could smell it really strong. I know it's not meant to detect everything. I always keep my phone on the nearest, clean surface or connected to my Bosch work radio. So the sensor placement isn't an issue. I'm glad I can turn this feature on or off. The camera should've been made to flagship specs. Firstly, just because...and secondly, it's critical to the performance of the measuring app and Flir. The main thing I do is take pics. I then write on them, attach them to an invoice and email it. I can now do this with thermal images attached. In my world, this phone will pay for itself in a few weeks. My Note 8 is very good but I've already replaced the screen and it needs to be constantly plugged in. Iwas on an estimate with another contractor and both of our Note 8 phones died at the same time. If you just want to play with a basic thermal imager, just get the Flir or Seek for Android and Iphones... but don't drop it. Even those seem to have a slight delay on fire up. Basically, it's a $500 phone, with built in accessories that would cost you $500 separately, lol. My only complaint is that my sweaty face made the screen keep waking up and the bottom, right corner of the screen protector is coming up already. In the end, this phone will be my daily one because of the outstanding battery life (day 3 after first charge and 23% left!), durability and basic thermal imaging. If they can improve on the camera, it's a real winner.
Aww well aluminum I softer than steel lol, so I would rather have a brushed stainless steel that would look right at home with some scratches than easily scratched anodized aluminum. As for battery life, you are so right it is pretty incredible. If your screen protector is coming up, I'd contact Cat, I'm sure they'd replace it for you, or at the very least send you a new one. Yeah being that the VOC sensor is a wide spectrum compromise, it won't always detect everything. But yes, I hope they release a version with a bit more ram and improved cameras. That would be the golden ticket of rugged phones.
I was also wondering if you tried the night light feature. It's supposed to do some kind of Amber screen, they say is designed to help you sleep. Also, I found the downloadable manual helpful.
Gerry926 Oh yeah as a user of night shift on iPhone and f.lux on my computers, I couldn't function without blue light filters on my phone. Glad that it's got it. And as for the manual, where did you find it? Because I went to the catphone site and the download link doesn't work.
I can't copy the link because it goes straight to the download. But if you Google S61 user manual, you'll see it. It starts with, pdf downloads.cdn.re-in.de
Well it is available on ebay and Amazon, so I'm sure you could get it from there. Also I'd check Cat's website to see if you can buy from them directly.
@@ctuan13 i need to see that phone in personal so i can check if its good..because loys of people asking dont buy that phone in just 5 months or 7months it will have damage and they will not replace anymore
@@benjiecalago1776 I'm not sure exactly what you're getting at, but the S61 comes with a 1 year comprehensive warranty that covers the entire device and if you buy directly from CAT, you can register an additional year of warranty, for free.
scratching my head, i considered really this phone for all his tools. But really it has to much issues as For photographie quality and lacks of multitask with Ram and Processor.
I'm not sure if I would actually block those holes on the side after checking my mobile here with the right hand, so it might be all good. I don't know.
ctuan12 after you reviewed it, could we exchange 1 to 1. I bought milwaukee m12 thermal imager around Usd500. A bit dissapointed of the performance for my plumbing inspection job purposed. Would you like to exchange with me, it would help me so much on my newly small plumbing company to start my life again after fall several time. Tq
I would say, you're reviewing S61 as a smartphone but is not ... in fact is most reliable piece of technology one might might want and have.. which transforms, sometimes, a review on a "mobile phone" .. as "critical/negative" and not positive :) ... in fact ... it's a live saving device (in case of disasters or "wars") ... but not only:P ..nothing about the underwater camera, motion detection lock ... nor about live streaming thermal cam? :) ... to give you an example ... "device S61" rings as message ... my colleague asked me ... what, a text, or tweet, or FB? ...... nope, just an unhealthy air alarm ... so just let's fking go out of here!!!
Raz C Hey man, I appreciate the comment, but at the end of the day, you have to remember as much of a tool as the S61 is, it also may be someone's only device and phone. So everything else is just as important. Also, I did my best to highlight all of the tools, including the thermal camera, air sensor and laser measurement tool. As for the thermal livestreaming, it's currently not available. We're waiting on an update to the MyFlir app to reenable it. Hope this helps.
All I wanted to say: it's unfair to compare it with a mobile phone ... it's far away more than this:) ... anyway with a 4k camera you can chose the best frame you look good (add likes) .. but this is a serious gear that performs "super decent" in the "world of smartphones" ... something like: can vou do movies underwater? ... or can you do a selfie from underwater? All you said it's cool and true ... I'm just adding :)
A lot of false info in this video: The S60 FLIR sensor resolution is NOT 90 x 60, it is 80 x 60. Furthermore, the S61 FLIR sensor is NOT, repeat NOT!!!, quadrupled in resolution at 160 x 120. It is still a 80 x 60 sensor, the same as in the S60, but with software wizardry extending the usable temperature range. I got a brand new S61 and was hugely disappointed, as even the manual clearly states the FLIR sensor to be 80x60, a fact that was also reluctantly confirmed by an extended chat with CAT customer support. Nowhere in the various tech specs that I can find around the Net does it ever mention the new Lepton 3 or 3,5 sensors with 160 x 120 resolution being used in the CAT S61. Bummer!!!
My bad, simple mistake on the resolution! I misspoke there! And as far as I knew the resolution was increased, but if it isn't that's strange, since the resolution when covering the visible light camera in thermal mode, seems to be much better than the S60. Still no matter what, my apologies for the incorrect spec point, hopefully you still found the video informative! Thanks for watching!
Also, you mention a specification you read listed in a manual, yet if you watch my unboxing video, you will see there was no manual in my box, only a warranty booklet and a quick start guide. Where did you find a full manual?
Patrick Cloninger Thanks for the comment, that was my understanding as well. In addition Clove Tech, a UK electronics retailer is an authorized cat phone dealer and in a comparison video on their channel also stated that the thermal resolution had doubled. Also if you compare the thermal only footage of the S61(blocking the visible light camera), it looks far more like the footage from a 120x160 module, more than a 80x60. But I guess I won't really know until more detailed specs come out.
Charging issues, side trays comes loose after repeat uses, software issues, thermal issues, i mean you know the problems but why not tell the public is mind boggling coming from you. Maybe bc the company donated the phone to you? I dont know but Im 100% sure you will see the bads in the the future.
You can't be serious... I purchased this phone myself and didn't even buy it directly from Cat Phones. I state in my unboxing that I bought it online from a company called Overseas Electronics: ua-cam.com/video/8PxgwXRllGk/v-deo.html As for the charging issues, I'm not only well aware of them, I experienced the problem myself as first highlighted in this video: ua-cam.com/video/2cCJGOPVfL8/v-deo.html I then contacted Cat Phones and was given prompt warranty service. My phone was replaced with a new unit at no cost to me. However, because of their initial lack of response on their promise to communicate with me, I even criticized them at the beginning of this video: ua-cam.com/video/2xyL0CuVDxw/v-deo.html As for the sim tray coming loose, I personally have not encountered this issue at all myself, but I also am not constantly removing and reinserting the tray. So I can't confirm that issue. But if you are having it, or the charging issue, I would contact cat phones immediately, their warranty is top notch, even if their device is still experiencing growing pains. Regardless, please take more than a second to peruse the other content I have produced about a topic, before making baseless claims and insulting assertions that I would intentionally mislead my audience. I take my integrity as a reviewer seriously.
I've had the phone for about 4 months now, still quite happy with it. Not sure why you'd think I'd hate it. Any particular reason? If you think it's because the S60 had many issues, I can assure you, the S61 has addressed all of them.
My apologies if my speaking and presentation took away from the content of my review. But I really do try my best to prevent clear and concise information and I hope you still gained something from my video. Thanks for watching and I appreciate the comment.
It's a piece of shit phone I've had a real life experience with s60s this is a piece of shit on steroid. Mine started malfunctioning from day one The warranty place is mid America That means you'll be without your phone for a few days or a week. guys all the buttons and functions that you have to press is on the other side You see it's English made. So it takes a bunch of getting used to
Well I'm sorry you don't like it. I apologize if you thought it took away from my thorough review, but I like to think it doesn't change the quality of the core content I provide.
Hey guys, just a correction, the built in thermal Flir Lepton module is actually 80x60, and not 120x160. I was basing my info on what little early information was available, but further testing has confirmed it is the lower resolution of 80x20.
lower resolution of 80x60 ;-)
Amazing how it on the same resolution looks so much better then on the S60
eco logic Yeah, that is because the flir MSX overlay resolution has increased to 1080P but the actual thermal resolution is unfortunately still only 80x60
Waterproof ??
Sooo... where did you go on 07-07-2018, saturday? There is a red bar in the VOC sensor data, I think at around either 10 o clock in the evening or maybe even a bit later on. Was that somewhere where people were smoking? Was it car / road -location related? Because this data would be nice to log too for health nuts :-D
Too bad about the low resolution of the FLIR cam/heat sensor. I would really like this phone to help out in fault finding of SMD components in circuitry. But at these resolutions.... nah, that only delivers an approximation of an area, not exact enough to pinpoint for example an IC or SMD capacitor, so still alcohol, petrol or freeze spray has to be used.
Dunno...
Review cheapest unbreakable Poptel P60.

Hi how is phone holding up
@@tomthompson8875 still fine. no scratches on the display and battery is still fit, holding up to two days by average use (google now and then, some music during breaks, hotspot for my tablet.)
the android os was also recently updated to 9.
This video was put together really well! Keep up the good work my friend!
I BOUGHT IT FROM PARTYSHOP..WBESITE JUST In $250
Finally, when the camera brackets turn green, take the pic and it's instant. If you take the pic before it goes green, it'll seem like you took the pic but it won't actually capture anything until it's focused and turns green. The front facing camera is instant.
Gerry926 Yeah it's because the front camera is fixed focus and the rear camera is autofocus. And the rear camera autofocus is VERY slow.
Agreed!... And thanks for the great feedback.
I'll try the wet hand thing and glove mode tomorrow at work. I know it didn't like my sweaty face next to it. Can't blame it for that though, lol.
Gerry926 Haha I gotcha. I mean I know glove mode works, it seems to turn up the sensitivity, but that doesn't help with wet hands, it makes things worse.
Good review. Can't wait to get mine. My S8's top half of it's screen has't worked for the last 4 months. This is why I'm going rugged.
Same here! I was tired of my expensive flagship phones being unable to survive daily life and coming with inherent design flaws built in.
ctuan13 I’m selling my CAT S60 in mint condition if you’re interested ?
Same here, my S8 broke just being in my pocket. The worst designed phone ever in terms of durability, the screen is designed so if it breaks you have to replace the entire outer casing including speakers, microphones, front facing camera, etc. Cost me 250$ to fix 2 months ago and it's already broken again.
You deserve more likes and views. Great review from someone who actually works with his hands, in contrary of most tech reviewers.
Kelvin Mulder Thanks man! I appreciate the kind words and I'm glad you found my review helpful!
Nice video you made,thanks.
At 15:09 you talked about the lag of export option for the air quality measure result(s)
Maybe you could take snapshots of the results and send this to where the results have to go. If you’re this source you can store it in a specific folder on your phone. Hope this helped you any further. When the speaker is wet and sounds mushy maybe at that point you could use a headset dry mic and dry (ear) speaker.
Bye and thanks again for you video good job.
Hopefully the Cat S62 will have all the stuffs you mentioned.
Kheshav Dheereess they might radically change the design and call it S70... I'll be lining up lol
Johnny5 I have been checking daily for a month and found it on amazon finally
Thats a great idea!
The photos off the s61 far better than the iPhone 7
Awesome video, very detailed and informative, keep up the good work!
couple dots of skatebord griptape or rubber glued to th3 frame and fixed?
I'm in the same boat have a samsung s8 active. Come on samsung wth!
Thermal camera and Snapdragon processor, would be nice, but that alu casing, is turning me a bit off, like my S41 with the rubber.
Well if you're concerned about the aluminum chassis like I was, you can get the rugged urban active case directly from Cat Phones. Check out my video on it here: ua-cam.com/video/5Vv_B7AaAsE/v-deo.html
add a case, aluminum is best for sinking heat from the giant ticking time bomb battery
Watching this on my Cat S60
Cant wait to get the S61
You all say that the thermal camera is upgraded with a better resolution of 160x120 pixels. Looking at CAT site and the original manual is says that is ONLY upgaded at the thermal range up to 400c and keep the same resolution of 80x60 as the S60!
Yes it has come to all of our attentions that in fact the thermal resolution is still only 80x60. If you take a look at the pinned comment, you will see I issued this correction. This confusion was largely due to misinformation spread by Caterpillars own technical support chat.
Check out my nighttime thermal test where I highlight my experience dealing with support: ua-cam.com/video/wbpE6dZf_T0/v-deo.html
could you do the same pic montage you did with the camera to the thermal imager so people can see its quality
I actually did a full video on the S61's thermal camera, check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/8RpFZETWCso/v-deo.html
I love u pronunciation and way of speaking... Very acessibke...Awesone! Im Brazilian.
Best phone reviewer on UA-cam, subscribed! Please review phones with barometer and large batteries like the Blackview bv9500 pro.
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words! I'll see what I can do about getting in some other rugged phones for review!
And also looking forward for the phone accurate measurement of temp using its camera.
hi, nice review. aluminium is actually more rigid than steel. that's why it gets micro fractures when it bends/dents. and that's why it's more fragile than steel. steel will absorb shock better because it's less rigid.
Hi,
How would you compare the flir quality to another flir product? Is it like the one pro? C2? Tg165? Or just the basic one?
I was thinking of buying a thermal camera but having it directly on the phone is the best for me. So if it works as well as a pro one why not buying the phone!
Can you compare in video S61 and S41? S41 is with lower spec, but has that comfy rubber case, the battery (by spec) is slightly better and I am curious how much they are comparable
Best Explanation about The Camera's speed function & that's gonna makes Me wait Patiently for The Cat S62 😎
Is there a free earphone come with the CAT S61 box after we buy and unbox it ?
Unfortunately headphones do not come in the box. All that comes with the phone is the charger, USB cable and manual. Hope this helps! You can also check out my full unboxing video here: ua-cam.com/video/8PxgwXRllGk/v-deo.html
Thanks for posting this it was very helpful for me personally
first of all that was hell of a helpful review!!
the second thing is about the slow shutter: it looks like u have activated the HDR, that would explain the slow shutter.
But if you are in construction and would use its features almost on a daily basis then yes.... buy it! :)
Edit: I am in agreement with you... but... forget the extra $100... with this price it should already have a top of the line camera with stabilization.
Excellent review.
Kevin Maher Thanks! I appreciate the kind words!
Hi ctuan13
Thank you for the nice video. Are you still using the CAT S61? There was a Software-Update a few days ago and since then the camera is so much improved! It's amazing now. Working very good and no blurry pictures anymore. Now it's a decent phone 💪

Hey Dennis, yes I'm still using it as my daily driver! It's been great! There have been several updates and one provided a big improvement to the camera for sure. I'll be making an update video on that soon!
Thanx mate.
I´m already looking forward to it.

Do you have any idea on how to make the display stay always on? The setup just gives 30 minutes maximum ON time. Thanks.
Thanks!!!
what is the max temp on flir adnd what is the distance range on laser thank lmk
I already have the S60 and was wondering if it’s really worth upgrading to the S61 ?
Is there an updated thermal camera in the cats80?
Compare with iPhone or galaxy is it worthy?
do you know if this phone will support wifi calling?
Best review i've seen on this phone, i owned the S60 for 2.5 years and just ordered the S61 to replace it.
Does it have a Stylus Key on the CAT-61?
The FLIR specs are found on page 45 in the S61 manual:
"FLIR Thermal Camera: 80x60 + SDK"
Yeah I agree, unless something is funky with the most recent update (which did temporarily remove thermal livestreaming), it would appear the resolution is 80x60. I did some testing and the thermal resolution just is really crunchy.
What's weird though, is that I spoke with a Cat representative who when I asked about the S61 thermal resolution, sent me this data sheet. You'll see it appears to be the correct data sheet and lists the thermal resolution as 120x160. Well all I can hope is that it's just a software bug. But I am very confused for sure.

@ctuan13:
That´s exactly the same tech info I also got in a chat with Cat support.
But this is what gives:
"The Cat S61 includes several improvements over its predecessor, including a larger 5.2-inch screen, laser assisted distance measurement to measure point-to-point distances up to 10 meters, an indoor air quality sensor, and an increased thermal temperature reading range of minus 20 to 400 degrees Celsius."
Bo Tingsten Yeah, it's looking like we've still got the same crunchy thermal resolution. Honestly, this combined with the visible light cameras being better but not quite where I'd like, just makes me feel like they would have been much better off selling this thing for $1200 and just upping the quality of the components.
Been thru two s60s been thinking about the s61 but budget is tight
Does the S61 smartphone have a stylus key?
Amazing review! Thanks a lot
Does it offer screen shoots?
what suprise me that the cat cam give better photos than the i phone.
The more cost-effective ulefone armor 9 has a 64mp camera. 6600 mAh battery
What exactly do people think they need 6 gigs of ram for in a phone?
You'll see, it verifies 80x60 for the Flir. Ok for me though. I only need to see basic hot from cold.
0:55 your welcome
is this available in philippines sir?
Well it is available on ebay and Amazon, so I'm sure you could get it from there. Also I'd check Cat's website to see if you can buy from them directly.
@@ctuan13 i need to see that phone in personal so i can check if its good..because loys of people asking dont buy that phone in just 5 months or 7months it will have damage and they will not replace anymore
@@benjiecalago1776 I'm not sure exactly what you're getting at, but the S61 comes with a 1 year comprehensive warranty that covers the entire device and if you buy directly from CAT, you can register an additional year of warranty, for free.
@@ctuan13 i dont have an ideA if its available in philippines, just wnt to buy this phone
Is this phone have been unlocked ???
what about ppt talk about it and use it plz
scratching my head, i considered really this phone for all his tools. But really it has to much issues as For photographie quality and lacks of multitask with Ram and Processor.
Nic Franco Well I will say a recent update drastically improved the rear facing camera, though the selfie cam is still limited by a subpar sensor.
Thanks for sharing 😎
Thanks for an outstanding review!!!
I m looking for a though and useful mobile phone. I guess i just found it.
I'm not sure if I would actually block those holes on the side after checking my mobile here with the right hand, so it might be all good. I don't know.
Popular and valuable smartphones of today have no features of S61.
Michael Angelo this is a smart phone of today
How much is this phone
Depends where you buy it. List retail is $999 but you can now find it for $800.
Need for oled, ore something better. Than it would be a blast.
ctuan12 after you reviewed it, could we exchange 1 to 1. I bought milwaukee m12 thermal imager around Usd500. A bit dissapointed of the performance for my plumbing inspection job purposed. Would you like to exchange with me, it would help me so much on my newly small plumbing company to start my life again after fall several time. Tq
iphones should never be your reference for wireless performance or antenna design. That's not what they are best in.
Thanks
Inches...? Are you here from the 70s..? Welcome to the future.
I have this phone it's bulky and heavy, it's scratches easily, the battery life ant that great.
I would say, you're reviewing S61 as a smartphone but is not ... in fact is most reliable piece of technology one might might want and have.. which transforms, sometimes, a review on a "mobile phone" .. as "critical/negative" and not positive :)
... in fact ... it's a live saving device (in case of disasters or "wars") ... but not only:P
..nothing about the underwater camera, motion detection lock ... nor about live streaming thermal cam? :)
... to give you an example ...
The photos looked better that iphone
Really sad to hear that Corona virus got him. RIP brother.
😂 Well considering I'm American, I'm just fine 👌 But definitely stay safe out there!
Perhaps he saw an early manual?
A Cat chat support specialist confirmed to me the thermal sensor had been updated to 160x120 when we spoke on July 6th.
I state in my unboxing that I bought it online from a company called Overseas Electronics:
ua-cam.com/video/8PxgwXRllGk/v-deo.html
As for the charging issues, I'm not only well aware of them, I experienced the problem myself as first highlighted in this video:
ua-cam.com/video/2cCJGOPVfL8/v-deo.html
I then contacted Cat Phones and was given prompt warranty service. My phone was replaced with a new unit at no cost to me. However, because of their initial lack of response on their promise to communicate with me, I even criticized them at the beginning of this video:
ua-cam.com/video/2xyL0CuVDxw/v-deo.html
As for the sim tray coming loose, I personally have not encountered this issue at all myself, but I also am not constantly removing and reinserting the tray.
Designed and build for outdoorshands.
Do a review 6 months later, you will hate this phone
I've had the phone for about 4 months now, still quite happy with it. Not sure why you'd think I'd hate it. Any particular reason? If you think it's because the S60 had many issues, I can assure you, the S61 has addressed all of them.
Walkie talkie??
Had to stop watching because agen, because agen because aben, I couldn't take anymore Agen.
My apologies if my speaking and presentation took away from the content of my review. But I really do try my best to prevent clear and concise information and I hope you still gained something from my video. Thanks for watching and I appreciate the comment.
@@ctuan13 video was good and information was also very informative. Thanks

So it takes a bunch of getting used to
好多废话
Lame intro.
Well I'm sorry you don't like it. I apologize if you thought it took away from my thorough review, but I like to think it doesn't change the quality of the core content I provide.
Thanks, that is a stupid place to put the censor for sure. Why not put it at top....
