Man. I saved this video 6 months ago, and just tried it. I'm amazed it actually worked!! Took my time, did as he says, and bingo !!! Radio, clock, cd...everything works like new ! Thanks for uploading this video!!!
I REALLY didn’t think this was going to work and I thought I didn’t keep it in the oven long enough. My oven never got to 375 but I kept it in at 355 or so for about 10-12 minutes. I followed the directions, reinstalled and viola….the radio works again! I think I forgot to plug up one connection since my radio controls don’t work but the steering wheel controls work fine. I’ll get back in it tomorrow and connect that one I missed. EXCELLENT, FREE step to get this old radio operating again…THANK YOU KINDLY!
worked for me! this was my last attempt to fix it myself. just like everyone else watching this i was skeptical about putting something in the oven for 16 minutes. i had nothing to lose since it didn’t work anymore. thank you!! time will tell how long it will work.
I am blown away! This actually works. The Ford dealer wanted $200 just to diagnose and then I’m sure it would have been $$$$ when they just replaced the radio. This really is magic!!!
Did it today - and it worked!!! Thank you. Be mindful that solder melts at 370 degrees. Your oven needs to reach that temp. When removing don’t shake or dip because solder can drip off or run. Good luck!
Holy Moly!!! I just did it and it did work. My 2013 Ford F150 STX has 335,000 miles on it and a few months ago the radio made that loud pop sound a couple times and would then come back on. Then another pop and never came back on. I checked the fuses & they were fine. I then found this video and SUCCESS!!! Thank You and I will now subscribe
I fully understood the concept of putting it in the oven, as the solder points do soften and settle back into place. This fix had not come to my mind, but when I saw the video I followed the simple instructions and it fixed the problem of the radio popping and going silent, as well as clock flashing intermittently. This radio has a new lease on life now. Thank you.
Man u exactly right it works!! I done it on my 2014 mustang radio and it fixed it but it stopped again 3 days later so I done it again and messed up and tapped it on the oven when I was getting it out and everything fell off so now I don't got a radio at all but your method does work no body I tell believes it but it is true BUT DO NOT TAP IT GETTING IT OUT!!!!
You don’t have to do anything but disassemble it down to the chip and put it in the oven on 375 degrees for 6-7 minutes. I just done it last night. It REALLY DOES WORK!!
@@motorcarnut what you men skipping a part? I said disassemble it down to the chip board. It will melt the plastics on the cd player if you don’t take it off.
Well…. I did it and it worked. Awesome thank you Sir. I gotta be honest, when you said put it in the over I was like Oh Boy here we go haha. I’m in the truck now rocking out
Resolder by hand Q201. It is a 8 pin IC or transistor pack. Heating in the oven trying to reflow lead free solder without flux on the board is pointless. It may work but not for long. You also risk further damage to the board and or connectors. The only way to reflow the board properly is to get it hot enough that it may melt or deform those connectors. The connectors are most likely added on after the main board is produced in another machine that wave solders them on. Also there is components on the the bottom side of the board that can fall off during the reflow if it is moved before cooled.
The problem part is a tiny, (head of a pin size) transistor which is almost imposable to solder by hand. Many people including myself had great success ( look at feedback) with this method. You have to remember this is a last attempt before buying a new stereo.
@@motorcarnut What does it have to do with being made by a machine? I wrote that you can easily solder anything if you have the right tools. This is what we are talking about for hours, like soldering 0.1 mm wires under a microscope. This can even be done with capital letters. Putting the whole thing in the oven is a big risk! Also because of the plastic parts, but mostly because of the capacitors. They can get so hot, they are damaged.
@Smith1000R read comments, people have great success! I agree with the proper tools and experience you can get it done but that would not be something the masses would be able to do so on my channel that would be useless.
My 2011 Ford F150 radio is doing just what you said the radio doesn’t work but the time I should say the clock is blinking. I’m gonna try to punch it first like you said and then I may try this. I just wanted to let you know, your video is fantastic.
If you have a ribbon it is not a conventional design with a snap. All that is needed is to pull on the underneath tab and the ribbon and simply pull it out evenly. Reverse the procedure for reinstalling......And my radio is fixed also......thank you for the video.
I just re-flowed mine with a solder iron and good flux. It’s working perfectly again. I don’t understand how the oven method will do anything to solder that has a melting temp between 500deg and 800deg? Glad it seems to be working and this isn’t the first I’ve heard of it but idk.
Really don't know how you know all this information but i'm gonna probably try this baking method. I've seen it all over the internet and gonna cross my fingers on this one. Thanks!
Didn't work 😢 I'm bummed. Now I'm looking into a touch screen replacement $300-400. Didn't wanna spend money but seems a better solution than getting the same radio or going to a mechanic. Thanks anyway bud!
Sorry it didn’t work out for you. Thanks for the update. The only problem with aftermarket stereos on these vehicles is you need an expensive dash kit and wiring and you lose some features like the sync steering wheel controls etc. well good luck!
@@motorcarnut I had to spend a little more for the steering wheel controls so it was a little over $400. I went with a Boss BE7ACP-C Package plus the PAC RP4-FD11 Wiring Interface. Might lose some of the button functionality but overall should still meet my needs. But yeah you're right I lose SYNC. I honestly never used it anyway so no loss there for me really.
$200 is not bad considering to put a new stereo in the f150 requires a dash kit, wiring and a new stereo can cost over a grand and still some features won’t work. If you do get a used one the model numbers must match exactly or it will have to be reprogrammed to your vehicle
I was an elec tech for years. The cooling part of this repair isnt that important. If youve reflowed the solder as described, its fixed for a long time. The problem is caused by thousands of hot/cold cycles finally causing a microscopic crack in a soldered joint. Seen it a million times.
Unfortunately did not work for me. Initially radio would pop and a good bump on the dash would fix it for a day but after heating it worked for 10 min then stopped. Wouldn’t work with a bump then tried again today and heated it a few minutes longer. No use. Clock just flashing. Going to see my options to order one or get a cheesy aftermarket one!
Sorry, yours didn’t work, some just can’t be saved if you done exactly like I said. You can try getting the code off the radio and looking on the internet like eBay for a used one. But all the numbers must be exact or it will need to be programmed by dealer. Aftermarket can be expensive because of the installation kit and stereo but can be better than the original if you get a good quality stereo like Alpine etc.
@@motorcarnut Ordered a cheap touch screen android 13/carplay radio for $180 that comes with trim and backup camera. Says volume on steering wheel functions with it. I know it won't be the best but the SYNC isn't the best for bluetooth either! Thank you for your video, awesome work!
would it be wiser to open oven door and shut oven off afterwards and just let it cool inside the oven so as to not "jar" the solder joints as it cools?
I have a 2012 ford F-150 my radio was making the same noise and shutting off, just the clock working, I removed the front panel, took out the two large wiring harnesses, cleaned with electrical connector cleaner reassembled. It worked for about three days, now not working again. Any thoughts.
@@motorcarnut thanks for the reply, I’m probably just going to upgrade to a touch screen for navigation and just so I don’t have to worry about it anymore
Once heated for 10 minutes at 175 do you leave it in the oven while it's heating up to 385. If so, is that time part of the six minutes or does the 6 minutes start once it hits 385?
Yes, leave in the oven while it goes up to 385 and that is part of the 6 minutes, correct. Be careful when you remove from oven, solder will be just about flowing so don’t shake it until it’s cooled down.
Amazed. Just like others I was doubting it, but followed your directions and now my system is working.. Thank you!
You're welcome! Thanks for the feedback!

@@motorcarnut Why would it be impossible to solder by hand? You need the right equipment and no problem.
@Smith1000R because the chip is the size of a pin head and the solder joints are even smaller. These were put in by a machine.

When you increase the temp do you wait for the oven to get up to 375 before counting your 6min, or do you start at the increase?
Start at the increase

It’s a tried and true method basically anyone can do. The soldering iron can cause more damage and most people don’t have one.
If the circuit board is dirty, should it be cleaned before going in the oven? And if so, what should I use to clean it?
You could clean it first then let dry completely before placing it in the oven. Electrical cleaner is a good choice.

Yes
Is the ribbon hard to remove. And does it need to be removed
@jerryschmidt4589 No it just slides out and yes it does
Tried it today didn't work for me
How do you check if speakers shorten out
With an ohm meter, normally should be 2 to 4 ohms. Something way more or nothing, its bad.
Do i have to take the metal plate off under the board?
No, do just like the video states.
Did you leave mother board on the bottom plate or take the 4 screws out?
@nichprevette6598 Leave it in that’s what you want to heat up.

Trying this now. What is the significance of the wood? Would a ceramic plate work?
Yes
Might as well do my blend door actuator for the 3rd time while I have the radio out lol
Yep, good call!
Can I just set it on like a metal pan
That may bring the temperature higher, I never tried it that way
are those temps celsius or farenheit?
Fahrenheit
How do you unhook the ribbon to the cd player?
Just pull it out evenly
Wowww this really worked for me‼️
