While holding select, it enters hotkey mode where I can push Select+Start = Escape, for example. I also use R3 for some hotkeys. Like R3+B = Alt+F4 if I need to force something to close. Other R3 hotkeys include controls for spotify so I can jam while I game.
Great video. It's got me thinking as a lot of the issues mentioned also pertain to using the Steam Deck with windows as it doesn't have a pre-built option like the ROG Ally or other windows native handhelds. For mine I've persisted with an app called Steam Deck Tools which does a similar job but with less scope for customisation. There's also handheld companion but again that also has limitations. I wonder whether you've just essentially uncovered a third option for Steam Deck which basically does it all?
Its insane to me that a company thats had a dedicated game console platform, just cannot get gaming on their pc platform at least up to par in features and usability.

Funny I was SteamOS people a couple weeks ago that the Microsoft Wireless Dongle was truly needed to have a console like experience and caught flack, because people are so dense in the head to use Bluetooth. Meanwhile you get a getter gaming experience with lower latency with the dongle, I have 3 of them at the house. Also, you can so a lot more setting just using the Steam Desktop and Guide Layouts. Make button shortcuts to launch Lossless scaling. If you even want, you can set windows to auto sign in on startup. I always just use WOL. Still, I'm glad someone is addressing the misconception that this was never possible. It's so frustrating to have to tell people their wrong.
I just tried JoyXoff but I get double inputs when desktop bindings are enabled. It would be near perfect if JoyXoff could hide/mute XInput in desktop mode.
I find it funny how only recently Microsoft made it so you can launch games from the controller using the game bar. Apple devices have been doing this for years
This is how my Linux system works: 1. Press home button on Steam Controller -Asrock motherboard power On pc. 2. System Pop!_OS boots to Steam BigPicture Done. And I use Steam keyboard&touchpad tracball mouse for everything. Good job Microsoft 😂😂😂😂😂
I have been looking for a way to connect a gamepad to my ROG Ally when docked with a TV to control the mouse similar to the embedded controller. I was wondering whether the virtual mouse driver or joyxoff software will interfere with armory crate and the embedded Ally controller functionality.
The Dualsense Edge and probably the normal DualSense does most of this out of the box. Probably not the UAC and the wake though, but it does have a touchpad which can replicate most of the function of the touchpads of the steam deck.
What exactly is the purpose of the Xbox Extended Feature Support Driver, both in general and specifically for this project? I often encounter errors when trying to install these so I’m curious what would break if I don’t have this driver, if anything.

This is similar to my setup, but even with all these tweaks, Windows as a console OS still feels super jank. @@cheezyfriez12 You could dual boot into Bazzite. That's how I have my ROG Ally X set up. It's super easy to set up! And you can even store all your Steam games on an SD Card so they can be accessed by both Windows and Bazzite! Best of both worlds!
Yeah it's unfortunate he had to use the Microsoft adapter because a dualsense would do the job much better with gyro and the extra inputs
@@runadumb I think a lot of people are underestimating the power of steam input outside games in the desktop. Steam automatically switches between both profiles between desktop and games
Would love if this worked with a Dualsense Edge. Xbox controllers lack gyro and other fun stuff.
I'm really interested to see how you run this. Personally I use Xpadder, for everything.
It's always in "console" mode until I hold Select. While holding select, it enters hotkey mode where I can push Select+Start = Escape, for example. I also use R3 for some hotkeys. Like R3+B = Alt+F4 if I need to force something to close. Other R3 hotkeys include controls for spotify so I can jam while I game.
5:55 a common misconception. You actually get less latency on Bluetooth than the adapter. It's been tested and confirmed.
I was expecting the Steam Controller 2 to solve this problem but looks like The Phawx beat Valve to the punch.
Thanks Phawx!
I use this in conjunction with playnite full screen to agregate all of my games/roms with trailers from steam or video snaps for retro games it also allows you to install games that are in your gamepass library
Yeah, Playnite is phenomenal! The customization and integration options are endless!
Just wish it scraped my gamepass library artwork having to set it up manually is a pain.
@@tomoprime217 i use game pass catalogue browser which adds the games to the library and scrapes them and in desktop mode theres a browser on the left that let you browse them and install them
Thank you Sir 💎
Wow my man what a good video!
My man just casually reducing console vs pc gaming war like its nothing
Your thumbnail game is #1, I happened to scroll over it and came to like and comment on the video just because of it.
Is it possible to have a custom windows 11 install thats stripped down and pre-includes these two drivers during the install?
I believe Microsoft has discontinued the Xbox Wireless adapter as of 2024
Funny I was SteamOS people a couple weeks ago that the Microsoft Wireless Dongle was truly needed to have a console like experience and caught flack, because people are so dense in the head to use Bluetooth.
Use hid hide, i
I find it funny how only recently Microsoft made it so you can launch games from the controller using the game bar. Apple devices have been doing this for years
This is how my Linux system works:
1. Press home button on Steam Controller
-Asrock motherboard power On pc.
2. System Pop!_OS boots to Steam BigPicture
Done.
And I use Steam keyboard&touchpad tracball mouse for everything.
Good job Microsoft 😂😂😂😂😂
Does the steam controller need a dongle, or is it through bluetooth?
@yeagmatic Remote power ON (bios setting if supported by motherboard) requires usb dongle.
Does it boot into Steam session or just autostarts Big Picture in GNOME?
@@Damglador It can do both.
It is just a setting on Steam client.
Are the 2 hours a day tinkering to fix the audio, bluetooth, GRUB, game compatibility factored in this amazing deal? 😂
THIS IS JUST WHAT I NEED
I have been looking for a way to connect a gamepad to my ROG Ally when docked with a TV to control the mouse similar to the embedded controller. I was wondering whether the virtual mouse driver or joyxoff software will interfere with armory crate and the embedded Ally controller functionality.
The Dualsense Edge and probably the normal DualSense does most of this out of the box. Probably not the UAC and the wake though, but it does have a touchpad which can replicate most of the function of the touchpads of the steam deck.
Having a german audiotrack is sweet.
What exactly is the purpose of the Xbox Extended Feature Support Driver, both in general and specifically for this project?
I often encounter errors when trying to install these so I’m curious what would break if I don’t have this driver, if anything.
that thumbnail + intro is awesome
Is this can be done on a Windows Steam Deck or it will screw the embbeded controller?
Anyone here knows how to block Xinput inputs from reaching the game while I type? The keyboard seems to work but in shadPS4, for example, trying to type gets me out of the input box every time.
been using my pc like a console for years with controller companion from steam works great my main tv is my pc
So youre telling me i have use for my old gaming pc now? Dang!
Also what kind of dongle do you recomend for dualsense? I think the touchpad will come in handy.
what are your thoughts one the rumored steam controller 2? If it does come out, it should solve a lot of the mouse problems and only leaves the keyboard to be solved. At least that's easily solved for with a keybind to toggle an onscreen keyboard, but a chat pad would be immaculate dream come true.
I bought one of the GTIs awhile ago and they're great. I dont know why they didn't put the GPU in the front though, made no sense.
The touchpad on the PS4 and PS5 controllers work like a laptop touchpad. The only thing that grind my gears os sleep state. I love how modern consoles just freeze and resume games
A dream that I've given up on... 'til now!
My controller Bluetooth still dont work. Keeps switching off every few seconds and when it works. The input lag is unbearable
This is sooo great 👌👌👏👏
Is there any eGPU like Razer Core X Chroma but with OCuLink for GPU and TB3/4 for PD, USB hub and Ethernet? Or is there option for mod Razer Core X Chroma for OCuLink?
I love how windows just turns off my controllers once in a while. Have no idea why
I am using the xbox adapter and it does not wake my PC from sleep even though it is configured in device manager and BIOS is also configured to wake from USB device. I am guessing it works for you because you have S0 sleep instead of S3
The cool part is that you can make CUSTOM CONTROLS per Game/Exe!!!!
I used a ps4 controller for years now to controll a windows pc and only missed that altTab and altF4 combos. it's touchpad is working pretty good for navigation. but good to have a option to navigate trough windows with a x box controller too.
This changes everything
This is similar to my setup, but even with all these tweaks, Windows as a console OS still feels super jank. Unfortunately, for my usecase (equal parts local gaming and streaming from it via Sunshine) Windows is still better than Bazzite, so I'm stuck with it. One issue I have with my official xbox wireless controller and adapter is it causes my HTPC to wake itself randomly.
