$12,000 USD Great Racer & Cruising Sailboat for sale - 32' Chance

- Опубліковано 21 лип 2024
- On a foggy, cold, rainy day, we ventured to the south coast of Connecticut to reacquaint Captain Q with a sistership of a boat he used to own - a 1972 Chance 32/28 Paceship sailboat for sale. The 32 is the length overall and the 28 is the waterline length. CQ raced this to 4th place in the Halifax race (from Marblehead, Massachusetts to Halifax, Nova Scotia) back in the day.
It's a neat boat and a tidy price for a sailboat for sale... and she appears to be in quite good shape, despite the soggy, chilly rain that we had to endure.
You can see some more details on the Chance 32/28 here:

I’m about to take my sails back to hanked sails for racing. Blessed be the old fashioned things that work :)
Right on!
This is one of the rare UA-camrs who can actually tell the price of the yachts.
Thank you.
This is my favourite channel on UA-cam. It's wonderful. Thank you Ran-Day and Capt Q.
Wonderful, Captain Q,! Thanks for coming out in all kinds of weather!
Our pleasure!
I had a Chance 37. This episode brings good memories. Thanks Capt Q and Randy
Worked For a dealer in Chesapeake Bay back in the day
Great looking boat and the interior was a surprise at how roomy it was. That would be a great boat for cruising and getting to your next destination in a hurry.
Just what I’m looking for in 4 years, thx for the video captain Q
Very clean boat for its age, it appears someone took good care of it, it would be nice to see the electrical systems in these boats.
First let me say... thank you for the great show!
Very nice boat at a fantastic price. Thank you Captain Q.
This brought back so many memories…. The good old days when we raced in SF bay on saturdays. Thank you. The grid was way ahead of its time. Bilge is sooo clean. Great interior too. Wish I was younger, but glad for the memories. This boat is in great shape. Love the LORAN…. Wish they kept the system up… one day when Russia kills GPS signals we will wish LORAN was still active.
Looks like a fun boat at a great price! Thanks Captain Q!
Your knowledge is absolutely to be respectful...!!
Thank you for sharing your passion of sailing and sailboat knowledge with us!
Truly enjoyed this episode. 👏👏👏👏
From Oklahoma USA ❤️
Old Paceship ... I have a day sailer made by them ... love the Maritimes !
Another very interesting, enjoyable video, based on an obviously deep command of the subject.
She's in such beautiful condition and priced so well that I'm shocked that Captain Q only rated her at 25. That is a NICE little boat. Thanks for another great episode Captain Q.
Great post my friends. I really like this boat ⛵
Just another fun and informative boat tour. You guys are doing a great job!
Glad you enjoyed it!
We had an atomic 4 in our 1935 catboat and it would really push old Teaser along nicely 💯Thanks guys and stay safe🙏Hope to see you on the bay 😁😁😁
Nice Moosestache!
Looking good Captain Q.
Always liked the looks of the Brit Chance boats, thanks for the trip down memory lane
Th as no you Scott
A great boat and as usual I enjoyed all your knowledgeable commentary.
Many thanks!
The perfect boat! Sorry Capt Q couldn't resist.
Love this boat and she seems well taken care of thanks for sharing another great video. I hope that you didn’t get too wet in that lousy weather. Stay safe and healthy 👍⛵️⛵️⛵️💕
Thank you. We wring out pretty well
Those are great backstay adjusters for a boat this size. I always like them.
I agree it’s really simplistic isn’t it
Cool boat !! Very nice
Love these videos. :D
Glad you like them!
A nice boat that's even in my price range that doesn't need a ton of work. Alas the wife has vetoed any chance of a sail boat. Keep the dreams coming Captain.
That cigarette ad was gold !!!
If covid hadn’t crushed my business and left me working odd jobs to feed and house my daughter and I , there’s nothing in the world that would have stopped me from buying this boat and starting my dream! But for now I’ll be dreaming that I’m in that boat somewhere peaceful with my lil princess showing her real honest life lessons and experiences! Hope you have a wonderful day!
You still have her though right
But I understand ppl don’t give things away like this lol so dreaming I shall be!
@@YachtHunters yes I do and wouldn’t trade her for anything that’s for sure!
Very well designed layout.
You crazy racers! She's a looker, what gorgeous lines. Even the swept back keel- racy!!! Finally, a boat with a 'sufficient' number of halyards to address the many moods of the Captain!!!
well said, David!! You can never have enough halyards!! :)
My father-in-law has one from the 70s. It won many club races in heavy weather off Newfoundland. He loves it even though critics say it had some design problems. I am trying to get him to relaunch it but he is getting on in years.
Looks great and roomy for a racer. I like it.
Thanks, as always.
We had that style sail on our Prams @ the Halifax Sailing Association in Daytona Beach,FL .
Thank you CQ and Randy. I will buy one, a blue water yet.
Yes… make the dream happen. You can do it!
What a happy accident to come across your video. As I’m approaching birthday number 85, I understand your lingo. I still have the itch. Cruising was my thing. I sailed the East Coast from Clearwater, FL to Penobscot Bay, mostly offshore. Occasionally inside. Of the boats I’ve sailed, my favorite was and is my Stone Horse, hanked on tanbark sails and simplicity. How my late wife loved her! My favorite spots: Maine, Narraganset Bay, and Chesapeake Bay. Can’t do it anymore, but the memories are still vivid. Thanks for your efforts. Good thing my driving is limited, as I’m not far from Bridgeport, and the venue is tempting.
Give me a call and we can commit mayhem together lol
Thank you
looks like great fun
Most tempting. I currently own a 1976 paceship 17 that I bought for $500 last year. When I hit the lottery this would be my upgrade 👍👍
excellent!! sounds like you got a nice deal!
Now here is a very good buy for me 😆😆😆😆
I remember this boats from the boating magazines at the time and considered it but the only sailing areas at the time for me was Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario but life gets in the way. The way it goes but remembrances remain. Thanks. ... Cheers ...
Here’s to second chances! Hope you find one before long. After a rough patch, I’m starting to dream again.
My Early big water sailing was out of the YYC across the river from you. Small world and great sailing there and of course there was always Toronto just 28 miles away or sell
When i bought my 1985 Catalina 30 4 years ago she still had the Lorans and the original VHF. Now all new electronics.
My wife and I love your videos , you bring the fun back into looking at boats . I could look at boats all day, at least the pretty ones . If you find a Bristol we would love to see you do a walk through of one , ok maybe because we have one . Always enjoy your posts , thank you .
We have an interesting barn find coming up 🤞
@@YachtHunters looking forward to it 👍
Wow what a cool deal for a little racer! It might be nice but as I too am getting a bit long in the tooth I don't think this would be a good fit for me. But for you younger fellows this is priced right for adventure and some fun entry into racing with a couple of your buddies!!!!!
The cigarette commercial made me lol Randay
Loran……that brings back some memories!
Remember the charts🙄
@@YachtHunters from my lobstering days in Boston harbor
un saludo afectuoso desde chile gracias por su gran aporte
Oh Wow! Just too many years have slipped by for me to take the joy of owning this little cruiser. But, anychance you pair can sail it to Oz for me...No charge, just the pleasure of the voyage..LOL
Sorry , but Oz ?
In the right light, from the right angle, and sporting that mustache, I see a little Walter Kronkite in Captain Q, don't you think? (of course I'm dating myself). And one more thing Ran-Day, don't EVER change the closing! It's a big part of the schtick, I never exit the video early!
Wyntje Walters’s boat More fitting if I would be on RanDays lol
Super cool! I just picked up a Tartan 30 last weekend and your walk through videos have been amazingly helpful! I’m currently 26 and thanks for the inspiration to get out and go sailing!
Congrats! Good for you and fair winds Carter!
@@kevio6868 Thank you!
I had one years ago. Great boats. If I were to move near open water and get another boat, thats what I'd get.
@@Abandoned_Brane Awesome thats super encouraging to hear! I got hull #511
@@carter_saunders don't recall hull #. It was a 30c. Deeper keel higher rig. These boats are perfectly balanced. They'll sail themselves.
thanks, just made my day......46 years ago, you still a spring chicken then. must be the beef stew?? lol.....love ja all....
all in good moderation ;) Cheers, Marcel!
I always loved my Atomic 4.
👍
If I lived on the East coast again this would be a great little boat for coastal cruises......
Absolutely
My Victoria 18's foresail is a hank on style sail :)
Another get video this one goes down memory lane...And I like that at 68 years old...Ran- Day you do a great job highlighting info for us...Capt Q if I was a rich man I would buy you this boat so you could go see her now and then and have good memories...
Keep playing the lotto Harvey. My fingers crossed for us both of us
Thsnks for your good wishes
I do like the boat.
I still sail with hanks on my Alberg 30! And two of my jibs are original Hood 1967!
ahhhh the good stuff! Love the Alberg 30... gorgeous lines
Good one! I remember those 32/28s quite well. I bet you raced against my friend Hume Wells, Pegasus, on his in the Marblehead race? My gang was a little out of sync, we went from a Paceship 29 to a C&C 29, and then a Kirby 30. Those were some fine times for sure! I think we all mastered the broach back in those days.
Wow. The names Hume and Pegasus ring sn old bell with a crack in it
I think she might have been the one who came out of the fog bank after three days of racing to Halifax about a mile or less ahead of us
She hit 3rd and We 4th ! Love to know if my memory is clear. Thanks so much for writing
Alan
CQ
Is Hume still sailing I hope
@@YachtHunters If I were a little closer I would go explore the archives at the Squadron. I haven’t been there in two years. What year would that have been in the mid seventies? I am trying to recall Pegasus, I think she was white. Hume had a C&C 38 and C&C 40 that were both dark blue. He would likely have been sailing with his sons, Mike and Bobby I think. And he might have been seen standing on the foredeck in the fog with his Whistler radar rig around his neck.
@@YachtHunters Unfortunately no, Hume slipped his lines a few years ago, and is on to better seas.
Much like an L36 I sailed in SF with an Atom 4 which was a bit cranky in the 70s.
The Chance 32 was the boat I learned to race. We sailed on lake Michigan out of chicago. Fun boat with lots of go-fast gadgets. We never did know what all the extra tracks were for and Brit was not forthcoming.
Not surprised. Too long ago to recall all the details but it was as certainly race ready when she arrived we also had a wheel
I think I’ve seen her pictures under images on a safari search Red hull
www.luxuryatch.com/wp-content/uploads/1974-paceship-chance-32-28--2.jpg
Wow, this is a gem! Everything including the electrics is original. No one messed her up. That is really hard to find! The gasoline engine makes the boat hard to sell now and in the future, you get a lot of boat for very little money.
that Atomic is quiet. The atomic fans really swear by them, especially since OEM replacement parts are still abundant. Overall she's is really nice shape and almost turnkey for $10-12K
Well said and Ditto!
I love my Cape Dory 30 😋
Raced her sistership at Gibson Island she was outa Annapolis in 1974 .
👍
I'm always amazed by your ability to know how many boats were made of a model! Where do you find that kind of information!?!
living this long lol thank you for kind note
Buy it Captain Q!,,,,
Nice mustache! :D
I am still amazed at the depth of your sailing knowledge and your ability to present it in a fun way! I am looking forward to having a copy of your eventual brain chip provided by Mr. Musk. It will be held in high esteem at the Transhumanist library on Mars for eons!
😜
That Loran C was not original, since Loran A would have been the loran system in place in '72. The unit on this boat was probably from the early 80s. Texas Instrument had some the first yacht Loran C units, which did not have waypoint capability - just TDs ("time delay" readings), which were easily plotted with an interpolation card (which I still have).
Love the videos and seeing Randays new addition ! Question does the captain still have the PB ? If so can we get a tour of it ?
we hope to arrange that
Amazing how much boat you can get for your money. To everyone who is thinking about starting sailing -and lives in the neighborhood- this is most likely your boat.
Do you really think so? Even with a hank on jib? Would the 5 1/2’ draft present any problems to a new sailor?
@@claytonallen3361 I think, for a beginning sailor, this is a wonderful boat. Only 12K! You don't fall into a financial abyss, and the boat offers a lot of fun. Draft should -normally- not be a problem.
Yeah, that's a good one. But I'm not ready yet. :-(
Hello nice video I want this boat. Saludos,
That is a lovely boat with a fair price, IMO.
agreed
I can see the Captain in his best Errol Flynn pose barking orders to the crewmen to keep the boat in the pole position!
Rarely barked except in the company of extreme repeat. Mindless ness
Growl a little
Looks like a nice club racer or weekender.
Exactly!
Would you ask captain to review a Shannon Shoalsailer 35? I know he's always looking for unusual sailboats.... well here is one. This boat can sail in 30" of water and doesn't have a centerboard!!
we'd love to find one to check out!
I love hanked on sails.
Yeah !
Captain and Ray I have a quest for you, due to my country’s import restrictions I can only bring in boats 30 years old or newer.
With a budget of $50k, and the idea to sail from the americas to the polynesia and back, what would you pick?
Check out our picks of the year (2021) as there are a few under $50k that would do the trick (think Pearson): ua-cam.com/video/Xhbn3uhflN0/v-deo.html
Captain, would you use those tension thingies to tune the rig? I never felt the need.
No I didn’t really think they were necessary. But a simple math citing and tacking back-and-forth to get the spire straight seem to satisfy me. I do admit I didn’t win the Olympics or the Americas cup but I never lost a mast on my own boat
The Capt. Q measuring stick rules
Seeing a lot of 30-32 foot boats for sale in this range these days.
Gas engine is a deal killer. To re=engine, with diesel, you need a bigger prop and strut, plus a bigger exhaust thru-hull.
Perfect candidate for electric conversion.
I have hank on sails on my Hobie 33
The way the MOB gear is rigged to that backstay makes me think they got a lot of use out of the buoy.
Serious question: Since she's a racer, what kind (and condition) of sail package does she come with? (bonus points for a blooper)
Best to contact the owner and see what list of sales he will provide there seem to be a good number of bags and I’m sure there’s a spinnaker or two maybe. Maybe a blooper but I have no idea. Find his name and information underneath his episode description on your computer. Go to the button show more and click on that and you’ll get his contact information
You shoud check the best boat ever build, Jonmeri 30 or 33 feet. What a masterpeace of S&S construction
When we can we will thanks
👏👏❤❤👍👍
I’ve been thinking about and procrastinating about getting my first sailboat for awhile now. Do you believe this is a good fit for a new sailor? It is close to home for me, but I was thinking that I wanted something with a shallower draft. And maybe roller furling in case I need to reef the job quickly.
Seems like a great value.
Don’t forget, we were younger then. OleDave
What draft were you thinking and why. …ask yourself. That.
I sailedfor almost two decades with 8’
I just didn’t try to beach her
Roller furling wasn’t born with Ssilboat. It evolved for raving and simplicity
I go think it has s down side in h th hat too many skippers carry too much sail too long. In the old days we read the weather and prepared in advance for wind changes up and down
As far as ‘dumping” it a hanked sail can drop to the deck like a rock most of the times.
If you get a boat with roller you certainly probably wouldn’t go back to hanks
@@YachtHunters I was thinking 4’ draft would keep me out of trouble in the marina entrances, and maybe in the Bahamas someday, my only experience was a small power boat with less than 2’ draft. I expect to take awhile to get experienced at sailing and don’t want to break anything during my “rookie” time.
My father always had me light his cigarettes in the companionway then hand it back to the helm. I am amazed I never smoked.
Now I think that boat is worth more on the points than the last 2 or even 3 boats….captain q it need to be dollar per smile rating not just how big and fancy!😂😀
If it had a trailer, I would buy it in a new york minute
Why don't y'all carry a moisture meter with you and test some of the surfaces while you are reviewing these boats?
So Randay, you actually threw Capt. Q over the side to cqr the prop??
other way around.... CQ does the throwing ;)
Easy peasy is what they say now? Maybe 60 years ago. You are so funny.
Where was this Chance 32 built? Does she real displace 10tonnes as is indicated by the documentation?
We believe in Nova Scotia
12,000# reported
Built in nova scotia
"Not an actual guy" this was funny
Did you make toasted cheese in that galley?
I’m pretty certain I’ve made toasted cheese in every galley
I am a big fan, and support what you are doing here. But, I would hope an experienced broker speaking to an audience that includes people new to the sport would explain why every sailboat doesn't have a nice, quiet, gasoline powered engine. The entire industry moved toward diesel for some reason, right?
Good point. We covered it in an earlier episode but could always use a quick recap. thanks for the suggestion!
Captain Q, didn't I tell you not to hang around with Randay you'll end up buying another boat😁
Hahaha
How is it that a 32’ has berths for 5 and many larger boats don’t?
I dunno. Mostly her early iot belly probably
@@YachtHunters : it was more of a rhetorical question really but 🙏 thanks
