    In previous videos, we explored several other Taiwanese built sailboats, such as the Formosa 51, the Mikelson 50, and even the Ta Chiao CT 54. Known for their luxurious teak woodwork, these Taiwanese boats have a rich history in the sailing world, and are loved by many. The last Formosa 51 that we saw on the channel sank only days after we saw it. It's tough to find one in good condition, so we took a shot at one in Carabelle, FL that several people had told us about.
    We're Siren and Captain Hal. We're surfers, we're fishermen, we're yacht brokers, we're boaters, we're captains, we're divers, we're ocean people, we're Floridians, and that's what our channel is all about!
    We do hope that you'll subscribe and follow along!

    Those were some of the most expensive boats I have seen in awhile . The steel one actually looked in better shape . Rust is not hard to fix if not too extensive . Steel boats can look real ugly while still being solid .

    I have been to several times & as a Canadian from Cape Breton Island, the way you (long time or born & raised Floridians) react to ahhh "what you call cold" has always made me chuckle. Once when in Sarasota area in February , a gorgeous morning blue sky, sun just cracked the horizon & this restaurant offering breakfast special was quite busy, I asked the greeter if I could get a spot out on the deck...she was shocked & told me "it was too cold to put her wait staff out side & was why no one was sitting out in the cold". It was about 55* or maybe a bit higher ....Then she says, "You're a Canadian aren't you dear" while looking AT ME WITH A LOOK OF I THINK IT WAS CONCERN FOR MY MENTAL WELL BEING ....LOLOLOL. We sat inside, to protect the wait staff.🥰

      @TheSirensLog  7 місяців тому

      hahahah I can't say I blame them, honestly! I'm a bigger wuss about the cold than most other Floridians (that might be part due to the fact most "Floridians" aren't even from here, anymore) so when it's below 75, it's cold. 55?! No thanks. We've had below freezing temps lately and I'm living in hell.

      Yeah, I like them, I just don't keep up with any other channels really or what they are up to. I just like that she also plays music. haha Yeah, we really did want a Formosa 51 or the like, and we'd looked hard at that Mikelson, but it's all a bit much I think. We thought we had more money when we started looking a few years ago, and that budget slowly dropped but it's alright, we're still doing cool things and we will still get a boat, we just may go a little smaller for a few more years and then upgrade, which is what I didn't want to do! That's alright though.

    One of my biggest fears is finding myself incapacitated in a moldy cabin. It cost me $876CD to have air tests (Artificial Intelligence) performed on a three story home. I'm just thinking out loud here because I don't want to see you sick. Salty air is good and grinder dust is bad...sort of thing. Trust me, I understand the drive to perform a custom refit but live and let die does apply in this episode.

    • @richardstever3242
      @richardstever3242 8 місяців тому +1

      If you did get that Formosa for the right price you could afford to sub out the ugly jobs. A custom pilot house could add character and that interior could be popped back in easier and cheaper than starting new. (thinking out loud again)

    • @AnotherVWChannel
      @AnotherVWChannel 8 місяців тому +1

      You're right! For us, it's a bit much. We have a budget, but I'll be the first to admit, it's shrinking everyday as we put more money into my VW's. We started a second channel for that actually, it's called Another VW Channel. It's worth it to drop the budget a bit for those, and you're right about being able to sub out the work! I think we really want to just get moving on something that isn't a huge project, though. We're already crazy busy people so the smaller the project, the better.

    Seems the “Yellow X” bargain bin boats are all too far gone for your purposes… perhaps your contact at the boat yard can disclose the boats that sat on the hard for a season or two, approach those owners as they may have lost interest or due to circumstance be interested in letting the boat go on to a new owner… a “win-win”, less time-money in refit and the former owners can minimize the carrying costs towards the inevitable sale… wondering about that one in the background here- 24:26

    I can tell you that twin rigged steel boat looks like a very good historic sail boat. It looks like a Freedom 40 or same design..by Gary Hoyt..🤔 the original design was a suprisingly fast boat able to beat a Swan 44... Also that big cabin aft is all for the owners.
    Originally a minimalist sailing design you steered from aft of the rear mast. The rig is original like a double masted Cat boat, very simple and safe for short handed sailing.
    If you can weld a VW bus you can repair a steel hull ...
    🧙‍♂️🇬🇧 happy new year.. and good hunting ... Dont forget to look at Epoxy ply built boats ...done properly like Wharrams they are excellent. The glassing of the hull is something needed to counter the dreaded Tropical toredo worms.

    Interesting. From what I have seen, you would spend just as much work on a "ready to sail" but needing some cosmetic work boat that cost a lot more.... at least that seems to be what I see people doing. For a "new" looking boat, at least on the onside, one has to work on pretty much every inch of surface. One is looking at an engine rebuild at least, possibly a new engine, pretty much replace any nav gear more than about 10years old and still redo the hull, at least below the waterline. All mechanical equipment will need to be serviced or replaced, winches, blocks, rigging over 10 years old, etc. It is the same if the boat is abandoned or being sold as ready to go. On the other hand, if one is just looking to go sailing and can live with the interior as is, paying a little more for ready to go is a better deal. Your particular search is a hard one. Take your time, be willing to walk away from anything, stay away from boats owned by more than one owner (though a couple is normally ok) because one owner will agree and the one you can't talk to will not.

    • @TheSirensLog
      @TheSirensLog  8 місяців тому

      You’re right. And yes, that’s where we are- needing a boat that’s almost ready to go but needs work. I just don’t want to do a complete refit and spend months or years on the hard. I know you can find deals when boats need some work but are still really sound, and that’s what we need. We need a deal and we can do the work.

    The Governor Stone! My brother Steven tennis worked (marine carpentry) on the boat back in the day.

    It is so sweet hearing you crooning over that poor boat "That's not termites. That is being broken in half."
    you are my kinda people - Floridians thru and through.

      Awhh thank you. Yeah the Governor Stone was really badly …I don’t even want to say damaged because the boat is basically dead now, but… actually it’s sitting a few blocks from our house! My good friend Anderson was commissioned to rebuilt it but they haven’t raised the money. There’s a workshop there and we wanted to do a tour of the workshop and show the Gov in a video but we just haven’t done it. I think that will end up being a video for this summer though! We may be using the workshop.

      If love to do something like that, but frankly, nooooooooo way!!!! Hahahah We are ready to use the boat. I hope hoping our friend would maybe take the little wooden boat and rebuild it, but it would be difficult to move over to his shop. The Formosa is a bit much too. It’s not that we couldn’t, and I feel like everyone on the channel is ticked off we haven’t bought something and gutted it yet but that’s not the plan! Never was. We want something that’s a deal and requires some work and maybe a light refit, but I don’t want to be on the hard for years. We are water people, but shipyard people.

Have a giant bonfire party and make room for the hundreds of new old boats to take their place in a months time.

    What a sad collection of derelict boats. That Formosa 51 would be an awful project to restore. Buy it for $10, spend several years and $150,000 rebuilding it, and you will end up with a boat that sails like a half-tide rock and will sell for $50,000. Truly sluggish performance, requires 10+ knots of wind to sail at 3 knots.

    • @TheSirensLog

      @TheSirensLog  7 місяців тому +1

      Well! A few things… we look a moment to streamline the channel which meant starting a second channel- Another VW Channel since no one over here like VW content. That took a good bit of time, if you see what we’re in the middle of over there. Also, as a yacht broker I’ve been slammed this last couple of months!! Multiple boats selling at once and just haven’t been able to get away to go look at boats. Now the kitten has just been spayed so we have to keep her contained inside and uneaten by the giant foster dog who also lives inside so that’s interesting but also keeps us from leaving. I did post another video of a day in my life because that literally shows what I’ve been so busy with and everyone just complained about how I was talking on the phone in the car which is completely legal in Florida. So I took it down because I’m way too busy and stressed to deal with the UA-cam negativity right now. So! Here we are. We do have another video ready for next week for a gorgeous little boat we looked at locally that we would totally buy but there’s another on the east coast we have to see first. Both are smaller but prices on them are amazing so we could upgrade later and start having some fun now. We can’t sail off anywhere too far away yet anyway. Hal is coming up on charter season and I have listings to sell. Plus the foster dog. Can’t do much until we find him a good home. Which is fine! So shorter trips all this year, probably a trip out west in the VWs in the fall on the other channel, and then 2025 is up for grabs!
