Alright I’m busty and tried this out and I have some notes to share! I whipped up a quick top and it turned out pretty good! I followed the steps exactly the same, except my straps were 4 inches wide. After putting it all together and trying it on, I found the same problem as Annika in that the back was a little baggy on me. After adding a dart like in the tutorial, it fit much better, but still not perfect but this is because I have big boobies! I found that the back of the top was really wide, and I figure this is because of the extra width I added to the top to cover my breasts. It covered the front fine, but made the back too wide. As Annika suggested, cutting the rectangle into three panels (back and two front pieces) and making the back panel an inch or two smaller would work great, but you’d probably still have to put the centre back dart in as shown in the video. Removing two inches off the back turned out to fit me much better, and I didn’t need to add any additional width for the front pieces. Ultimately this is a really easy top that didn’t take me long to put together, and oh wow the cleavage it gives me 😈 Hopefully this extra info helps people find a better fit! Thanks Annika for the tutorial 😘💖
Montana Goss thank you so much, Montana! So helpful; and so speedy! And for those of you who missed the first comment, Montana is a size 14/16 E cup ☺️ rock that cute top!
Thank you so much for reminding people to iron their seams flat. I am a long time costumer and it would have helped me so much if I had learned this earlier. Your tutorials are cute, interesting and even though I am a experienced sewer, I always come away with good ideas.
Yes Annika always gives a cheer just because she is one of us and stays cheerfull ( i am a chronic disease and disabled person too. )Head up, stay strong!
I volunteer my size 14/16 E cup body to science! I’m going to try the original pattern, and the dart tips to see how well it works and offer other suggestions if it needs 😊
+Montana Goss you’re the best! 💖💖💖💖💖 if you do leave a detailed comment and I miss it, feel free to send an email / ig dm my way so I can highlight your comment 🙌
I hope we can all see how it turns out! I'm not good at sewing and have no sewing machine but I loveeee how this looks and want to make it for myself. Thank you for volunteering so we can find out too lol
ugh annika you are so sweet and wholesome and this video is so well done and detailed and considerate, you've always been so good at that! Thankful for giving people like yourself!
Great tutorial! One thing I am going to throw out there for the straps is putting elastic inside of it. I feel like the when you move around the straps might slip off, especially if your shoulders aren't putting enough tension to keep the strap in place. What you can do is have a piece of elastic that is the length of the strap minus an inch for the stretch. When the strap is already measured out and sewn into a tube, attach one end of the elastic inside the strap with a straight stitch. This should be just above the edge of the fabric. Run the elastic thru the strap and then sew the second end of the elastic to the other end of the strap. Hope that helps
I'm so happy!!! Love your videos and it's such a treat to sit down and watch them! Also your so thoughtful thinking of other body shapes other than your own, it's so sweet and refreshing, I will definitely be making this for summer and sharing with you 💗 thanks for being such a babe and a brilliant tutor!
Yay! It's Annika!! You continue to inspire me. As a fellow #babewithamobiltyaide, most days is a challenge to battle through chronic pain and fatigue and depression just to get out of bed, and then I turn to UA-cam for distraction and I see you run a wonderful and beautiful channel full of creativity. It is such an inspiration to keep my head up. You rock my world, girl!! I noticed your arm patch, you take care. Barbi Love from Canada....! 💖🇨🇦💖
As an 18E-F cup, I'm super keen to try out this top because it's just so cute, going to try my hand at making some high waisted shorts to pair with it! I live in the country and it's always 5-10 degrees hotter than the city, so having this would be such a saviour! Thank you so much for the extra tips at the end for larger busts!
I would like to say Thank you for all you do I was diagnosed with complex PTSD and taken out of the game. I have since turned to sewing to take my mind off of things and fallen in love with it. You have been such a big help it is unbelievable. I love the things you come up with and the way you explain each and every step as to what you are doing.
I love you! I love your vibe, you're so creative, inclusive, and positive. I have three autoimmune conditions (Type 1 D is the worst of them) and watching you create and conquer despite not always feeling great is the best. Thank you!
Awe yay you’re back!! I love the new hair, and I can’t wait to get my sewing machine back and make a matching set using this tutorial and your half circle skirt tutorial! I’ll be sure to let you know how it goes! 💕
Great tutorial!! A couple of additional tips I thought of while watching the video 1) if you did the dart/back strap steps before sewing on the lining then it could be reversible!! 2) I would recommend interfacing the straps so that they are more durable & don't lose their shape as you wear them and 3) if you wanted a better fit you could also sew elastic (that's a couple inches shorter than the fabric measurements) to the top & bottom of the top (stopping before the tie part) either directly to the fabric, or by creating a casing!
okay I thought of one more: if you want even flatter/more perfect seams, press them open before you turn the lining/main fabric right side out. Then press them again after turning right side. This isn't really necessary, but it can make it look a lot more professional!
I love your videos - your positivity, creativity and thoughtfulness are really wonderful. I also have to say - I really enjoy your IG. It’s been great to follow you and your fabulous thrifted/handmade adventures, through good days and bad. Thanks for creating wonderful content!
I just found this tutorial (and your channel) and JEEZE I love this!! You explained this so thoroughly, which was wonderful for a new sewer like me! I made this top for matching shorts and I feel like I’m living my 50s dream. Can’t wait to make it again for my friends!
Love your videos! You explain things so well and your use of visuals are so helpful and it means your videos can be used by everyone. As a fashion student its nice to see some trendy and wearable being made and to get some inspiration as to what I can make in my spare time! I get excited every time you upload a video ❤️
you're so pretty and so talented. i'm totally doing this top! i bought som yellow fabric at a second hand store months ago, i even bought my sewing machine at a second hand store. you inspire me everyday. thank you for this tutorial!
Awwee! Annika I am so happy you are back and looking well! Your videos drive my creative side and I’m very thankful you are doing better and back to doing more cutesy creative things! Can’t wait to try out this too! ❤️❤️
I made this tonight for the first time! I didn’t allow enough extra length for the ties but I didn’t want to scrap the whole thing so I took the tails and gathered them, stitched them down in a way that the front looks nice and you can’t see the lining, and added snaps so now it just snaps together and looks really cute! This was my first time making a top!
By far my most favourite tutorial out there! Ive been sewing for a while but I just could get my head around how to make a top like this and now I have made a perfect one!! Thank you for a very well explained video ❤
Hi Annika, so happy to see you’re back after your much deserved break! First off, I absolutely adore the hair, it looks so good on you! Second, I’ve been working on making a doll pattern for my son and trying to find the time to sew it together to make sure it works, as well as planning out how to clone my favorite maternity dress. And lastly, I cant wait to see what upcoming projects you have to share with us. Have a lovely day!
I would cut the rectangle into five parts, back, two fronts and two ties, put darts for back to front and then gathers for front to ties... I'd also add some elastic to the top and bottom of the front pieces, maybe like 3/4 of an inch shorter then the front piece, especially if you've got bigger breast...
Annika, I love your videos! I love making my own clothes (I'm a knitter!) but I've only recently got into sewing - your videos are so fun and so simple to follow, thank you SO much! Lots of love and hugs from England! (where it was snowing this week, I wish I could wear this top now!) xxxxx
I have a larger bust and have made similar tops in the past so a couple tips I have are 1) if you dont care for the dart in the back you can do two smaller ones bellow the armpits and 2) instead of darts or gathers gently curve from the strap point to the back piece to transition the height. Bonus- if you find it compresses your boobs too much, adding a slightly curved princess seem over the bust points helps.
So happy to see you back Annika! I'm glad you're doing well enough again right now to be able to post! I'm proud of you for how well you're doing trying to kick your medication withdrawals, I know how not fun that kinda stuff is, and the fact that you're doing well enough to post is awesome
Love you sooo much A! That final message of helping eachother is so beautiful. You have made me want to sew, im disabled (I actually have Lupus...long story) so i really have no where to wear all the clothes I have. But since not everything fits or looks right and im here with my sister -in-laws seeing machine 😈 anyway I just wanted to thank you again for being openly you... for all of us! ❤
I love watching your videos so much! I've said it before: I don't sew and while I'm interested in making my own clothes I probably never will because other things are priorities in my life (particularly languages/finding better ways to learn and study) but I really like watching your videos so I can feel like if I wanted to I COULD make my own clothes! Plus, again, you seem like one of the nicest most amazing people ever. I think I saw you weren't feeling great a while back. I hope this video coming out means you're feeling better!
So happy you’re feeling well enough to film! Thank you for the extra tips for bustier girls... I’m a 34 F (US) so a big enough cup size is hard. But I want to try!
Annika, i just love it when you bring out a new video. This tutorial, as always, is so easy to follow and I love the fabric choices! I'm pretty sure I have an almost identical purple paisley fabric that I've been waiting for a good use for! :)
Welcome back~! good to see you again, I always love your vids :)it's still a bit chilly here (more than 1 meter of snow)but can't wait to try this out in ..a...few months :D and aaaah, this hairstyle is still so amazing!
I MADE THIS! I am super excited, only about the 3rd wearable garment I have made from scratch. I'm about a D/DD cup so managed to get away with Annika's original tutorial but made the straps 4" wide. I sewed the front straps on in completely bizarre places (despite thinking I'd followed the instructions...) so had to adapt it a bit as I went. I also measured the length of the top completely wrong so it is TIGHT but I've used a stiff fabric so it looks great. It meant I didn't need a dart at the back because its so tight... so that's a plus i guess Basically I loved this tutorial, and I'm going to make more, learn from the strange mistakes I made and potentially add elastic to the straps. Thank you!
I have some vintage floral fabric that my aunt gave me, I used some of it to make the "square circle" skirt and I'm going to use some of the rest of it to make a matching top from this, it'll be great for the summer
aa!!! i missed ur videos so much!!! u seem like such a nice and genuine person and ur diys always puts me in a sewing mood!! cant wait for more content! 💖
I’m so excited to do this tutorial, and I’m so happy you’re back on UA-cam and feeling good!!! A couple months ago I was inspired by your scrap tutorials and made a set of crazy quilt tote bags out of my scraps 😄 thank you for always being awesome
my chronic illness has been acting up since the beginning of december! developed my second ulcer, this time at 18 (first was at 13, got in some medical texts for it!) have been sleeping 16+ hours some days, have to take baths because standing in the shower is too exhausting, needing to use my cane again. im so grateful that youre talking openly about your struggles! it was awesome to see you shouted out in jessica's disabled youtuber roundup :)) wishing you the best with opioid withdrawals, i remember morphine withdrawals. *shudders*
I lovvvveeeedddd you hair in this video, I've wanted to cut my hair for a while now and you've convinced me! It suits you so well and you look amazing!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I am currently working on a skirt using your half circle skirt tutorial (just need to hem it!), and I have enough fabric left over to make a matching top using this tutorial! The fabric is a Garfield the cat bedsheet that I bought at the thrift store, and its so quirky and cute!
Oh Annika, again an amazing tutorial! I’ve been following your journey pretty much since your first UA-cam video after finding your old blog and it’s amazing to see how far you’ve come! You’re a huge inspiration to me and your bright cheery videos always make my day! (You’re also one of the reasons why I decided on a science major in uni, going for that marine biology life!) Keep up the amazing work Gurl and lots of love!♥️♥️
So cute!! I used to make tops like this all the time. You reminded me I need to make some more this summer. I'm in the US, Pacific Northwest, suffering from freezing winter❄️we have a storm warning for tomorrow.
Hopefully this extra info helps people find a better fit! Thanks Annika for the tutorial 😘💖
Montana Goss thanks so much! I'm busty as well (dd/ddd) in a size 12/13 so thanks for the tips
Yer a wizard harry! Thanks for trying it out, and so FAST! Do you think you'll wear a bra with it, or can you tie it tight enough to go without?
Can you add a photo? I’d like to see how it turned out for those who are different sizes.
Montana Goss thank you so much, Montana! So helpful; and so speedy! And for those of you who missed the first comment, Montana is a size 14/16 E cup ☺️ rock that cute top!
ReadyMadeBouquet I got it tight enough without a bra 😊
Thank you so much for reminding people to iron their seams flat. I am a long time costumer and it would have helped me so much if I had learned this earlier. Your tutorials are cute, interesting and even though I am a experienced sewer, I always come away with good ideas.
Omg, I wish id learned that while I was working in my college theatre's costume shop!
Just wanted to say, I was lying in bed crying about my autoimmune condition when you uploaded, and you really cheered me up. Thanks annika xx

Me too! So much energy for you!
off topic but your hair looks really good!! also love your videos, you have helped me get back into sewing and I’m eternally grateful for that!! 💖
also thank you for adding tips for making this when you have a bigger bust and/or are plus size (which i am both)
that hair? that intro? the plus size inclusion? i knew i adored u for a reason aside from our matching birthdays!
I volunteer my size 14/16 E cup body to science! I’m going to try the original pattern, and the dart tips to see how well it works and offer other suggestions if it needs 😊
+Montana Goss you’re the best! 💖💖💖💖💖 if you do leave a detailed comment and I miss it, feel free to send an email / ig dm my way so I can highlight your comment 🙌
oooh can't wait to hear how it turns out!
My DD body wants to know!
Please let us know how it turns out!
I hope we can all see how it turns out! I'm not good at sewing and have no sewing machine but I loveeee how this looks and want to make it for myself. Thank you for volunteering so we can find out too lol

MY QUEEN IS BACK!! I know you've been trying hard to get off opioids so seeing you putting out a video anyways makes me happy💕💞💗💖 keep being awesome!

+Alexa Rosalia wonderful tip - thank you so much! ❤️❤️❤️
ooh fascinating! will the strap look gathered, then?
Yes!! I totally meant to do this when I did it and forgot. I will do it on my second go.
Yes ironing is the hidden hero of sewing also strangely one of my favorite parts of sewing.
Yay! It's Annika!! You continue to inspire me. Oh my God, Annika, you look simply fantastic with this haircut and the set with the shorter skirt looks great
Oh man I never see sewing tutorials that are adaptable for plus size people!!!! Thank you so much!! I’ll totally try this !!!
As an 18E-F cup, I'm super keen to try out this top because it's just so cute, going to try my hand at making some high waisted shorts to pair with it! love it! 😻
I made a skirt last week and wanted to make a top to go with it but wasn't sure how to make it. gonna try this! 💖
Omg, this just made my day! I'm suffering through a rough week because of uni exams and this is honestly so great as a pick-me-up
I think I might make the knot permanent, add some type of closure to the back, and sew cups into the front inside to make it a bit more boob friendly.
So nice to hear from you again Annika! I live on the Southern Hemisphere too so it's nice to see this kind of summery DIY's!
I would like to say Thank you for all you do I was diagnosed with complex PTSD and taken out of the game. I have since turned to sewing to take my mind off of things and fallen in love with it. Really cool project! I love it (and I fell in love with the dress you are wearing when you take your measurements!!! So nice!).

wow I really love how you look in that black-and-white long skirt set. good job!
Your hair looks SO. GOOD. (Also this is great because I've been making fancy shorts and this is a perfect top to match it!)
Oh and I had some extra fabric that I had cut by mistake so I made a matching hairband! Can’t wait for summer so I can wear it every day.
Love the matching set. Girl you look amazing!!!!!!!!!
By far my most favourite tutorial out there! Ive been sewing for a while but I just could get my head around how to make a top like this and now I have made a perfect one!! Thank you for a very well explained video ❤
omg that gingham skirt/crop top combo was gorgeous!!
Hi Annika, so happy to see you’re back after your much deserved break! First off, I absolutely adore the hair, it looks so good on you! I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO MAKE ONE OF THESE BIT HAD NO IDEA HOW AND THE EXTRA BUST MODIFICATIONS AAARRRGGGHHH I CAN'T WAIT TIL THE UK SUMMER NOW!!!!!!!!
DustedLaces please let us know how it turns out when you do! ☺️❤️
So happy to watch this. I just had a rough therapy appointment and am so excited that you uploaded. I really needed this. 💛💛💛
thanks so much for posting the measurements in cm too, it's very helpful! lots of love from a new sewer in Barcelona, you rock!!!
OK this is one of the most helpful tutorials I’ve watched! Also you are so so pretty! Thank u :)
So excited you’re back!!!! Loved the video. I really want to learn how to sew over the summer!! I’ll definitely be going off of many of your videos!
I have a larger bust and have made similar tops in the past so a couple tips I have are 1) if you dont care for the dart in the back you can do two smaller ones bellow the armpits and 2) instead of darts or gathers gently curve from the strap point to the back piece to transition the height.

Annika i just loved this project and yr explanations are so easy to follow...
Love you sooo much A! That final message of helping eachother is so beautiful. You have made me want to sew, im disabled (I actually have Lupus...long story) so i really have no where to wear all the clothes I have. Ok this tutorial rocks also I cannot get over how completely adorable your hair is ❤❤❤
I love watching your videos so much!
Very inspiring.. I'm new to sewing but your videos give me a bit more confidence!!
So happy you’re feeling well enough to film! Thank you for the extra tips for bustier girls... I’m a 34 F (US) so a big enough cup size is hard. But I want to try!
This is really pretty, and the skirts look amazing, too!
Annika, i just love it when you bring out a new video. This tutorial, as always, is so easy to follow and I love the fabric choices! I'm pretty sure I have an almost identical purple paisley fabric that I've been waiting for a good use for! :)
Your best tutorial!! I’l make this for me and my daughter. Thank you very much!!
Basically I loved this tutorial, and I'm going to make more, learn from the strange mistakes I made and potentially add elastic to the straps.
Thank you!
Think your suggestion are great! I am not an official pro but i sew a lot and for a long and i couldnt do better. Great top ! Enjoy your summer!
I have some vintage floral fabric that my aunt gave me, I used some of it to make the "square circle" skirt and I'm going to use some of the rest of it to make a matching top from this, it'll be great for the summer
Been having a rough week and your video immediately made it approximately 718402726387x better. Also your hair is hecka cute

I’m so excited to do this tutorial, and I’m so happy you’re back on UA-cam and feeling good!!! A couple months ago I was inspired by your scrap tutorials and made a set of crazy quilt tote bags out of my scraps 😄 thank you for always being awesome
my chronic illness has been acting up since the beginning of december! developed my second ulcer, this time at 18 (first was at 13, got in some medical texts for it!) have been sleeping 16+ hours some days, have to take baths because standing in the shower is too exhausting, needing to use my cane again.
im so grateful that youre talking openly about your struggles! it was awesome to see you shouted out in jessica's disabled youtuber roundup :))
wishing you the best with opioid withdrawals, i remember morphine withdrawals.
Awh Yay! So happy to see you post! Will defo try this out when summer comes closer. Love you!
Your hair looks amazing! And I love the matching gingham outfit. ❤️❤️❤️

Oh Annika, again an amazing tutorial! I’ve been following your journey pretty much since your first UA-cam video after finding your old blog and it’s amazing to see how far you’ve come! You’re a huge inspiration to me and your bright cheery videos always make my day! (You’re also one of the reasons why I decided on a science major in uni, going for that marine biology life!)
Keep up the amazing work Gurl and lots of love!♥️♥️
