I wanna see if the crash detection can register Linus droping the phone
The next version is going to have Pre-emptive Linus Drop Detection (PLDD). Basically uses advanced biometrics to detect that it's in Linus' hands and knows it's only a matter of time.
Here, have a like. That was a good joke.
I heard that's called Airdrop, where you drop your phone and it will automatically use the accelerometee to change your phone's tilt so that it doesn't crack when it hits the ground. Neat feature. I have seen my friends did it.
haha, but it probably wont. Detection is way more complex to determined whether its car crash or LDT (linus dropping things).

this totally sounds like something aperture-science announcement system would say
Nah it's a dismiss button if you touch nothing it will call. Watch fall saved my very old father living alone once.
I like how they give a slight slap on Apple’s cheeks every 60 seconds, and it still looks like they’re praising the products
1:53 As the editors kindly noted, the iPhone 14 is far from the first phone to have a front facing camera with autofocus. In fact, I was so surprised to hear that the front camera on iPhones before 14 DIDN'T have autofocus that, during the announcement event, I tried it on my now 5 year old Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and found that even its front facing camera has autofocus!
It's really strange, because my current-gen iPhone *does do facial recognition* and conditions the image for my face and seems to be digitally autofocusing. I think what the new distinguishing feature here is *optical* autofocus rather than digital autofocus/exposure control. Seems Apple for once didn't word it quite as elaborate as it could've been worded.
@@Pilot-- All forms of focusing are optical by their very nature - they all require optical elements to be physically moved inside the camera lens to focus light onto the sensor. There are different ways for the camera to figure out how to get the right part of the image in focus, but even the best ones are controlled digitally, in software even, but they always control an optical element of the lens. That same control software is used to auto-expose the image and do subject/face tracking, so I understand that the line between all those concepts can be a bit blurry (pun intended), but autofocus is just one very specific component of such a system.
The only alternative to an autofocus lens on a smartphone camera is a fixed focus lens. Fixed focus lenses are unable to focus on close-up subjects and over-all can't achieve the same level of sharpness at any distance but its sweet spot. However, in cameras that are small and/or low-resolution enough, the inability to shift focus is not the thing bottlenecking image quality anyway so in those cases it doesn't matter. But, again, 5 year old phones have this already, so clearly front-facing smartphone cameras are good enough today and have been for a while that it does matter.
I can autofocus and I don't need technology to do it.
Dude. I was shocked 😲 I didn't realize they didnt have autofocus until now 🤣 that's super sad
I had to look more into...they do have autofocus it's just not mechanical it's software based
I like how Apple expects you to mark an option “lost” in a “cave,” and send it via satellite
Quite funny indeed. I think the point is for calling help for somebody else.
Maybe it's about the definition of "cave". I mean, what someone might call a "hole" and what the person would call a "cave" might be otherwise the same except that one is horizontal and the other is vertical. I mean, there can be caves that would give a line of sight to some sky, even if not directly above, especially if you're not too far inside.

3:43 Love how Apple compares it to their own chip from 3 generations ago and not the A15 so that their little line graph seems more impressive

I remember the days of CDMA and the limitation of not allowing to change carriers easily, and the huge advantage that SIM cards brought to the game, and how it meant more freedom to the user. Now technology is apparently in the business of limiting user's choices again, for no reason at all
I think it’s worth mentioning that SIM cards were always a thing, CDMA and GSM are different networks. SIMs didn’t change anything, phones just made it so you could work with both.
There is always a reason, follow the money. They want to lock you into a network and make the process of changing carriers a royal pain in the butt so when they gradually jack up the prices, you would rather just fork over the extra money rather than go through the carrier change process,
Not to mention that Apple probably gets a cut of revenue for e-SIMs which is not possible for physical SIM cards.
You won’t be locked in.
Yep, and for carriers that limitation was an intended side effect. Verizon had me by the balls for years because I couldn't afford to buy a new phone and my current phone was locked down to their network.
@@sinuslebastian6366 I do not believe Apple gets a cut for anything, the eSIM tech is the same across Android and Apple.
What it does, however, is make it a tiny bit more difficult to switch between iOS and Android. eSIM transfer is a breeze between 2 iOS devices, and 2 Android devices, but requires some setup if switching platforms.

That's why I like Linus videos. Finally, someone mentioned the problem with the fingers on the front face camera.
The fact that apple is comparing the a16 with the a13 is telling that it's a VERY minimal upgrade over a15...
It's a die shrink. And it still absolutely, utterly, completely destroys anything the competition has. The A13 still crushes the competition.

Also, not having a physical sim is a win for carriers. Less costing!
For satellite connectivity, T-Mobile is partnering with Starlink to do the same thing for almost all phones on their network.
The dynamic island does not look like that at full screen there’s a little bump, but it doesn’t protrude through whatever you’re watching
The biggest change to the AirPods for me is that they FINALLY come with volume control
As an Android user, I'm always sbocked how apple misses out on fundamental things.
I don’t think it’s about missing out. I bet they had volume control in some of their prototypes and most likely it was crap. Apple’s known for completely scrapping features if they’re not happy with the implementation
as an iPhone user, I’m shocked when Android implements a feature, and it ends up being a gimmick.
Seeing apple fans getting excited about features that should have been standard from day one years after those features have been introduced on much cheaper brands is always fun to see. So cute. 😂

You don’t need to remove a carrier to add a third eSim. You can load a whole bunch of eSIMs on iPhones at the same time. You just need to choose the up two connections that are turned on. You can keep a dozen other eSIM turned off on the phone.
If carriers supported eSIMs globally this is actually a super convenient way to travel. I just did this last month. I was able to turn off my physical sim (while keeping it in-device) and run on two eSIMs. I had 2 additional eSIMs that are also on my phone turned off.

I feel the same with no MicroSD card slots. Yes, cloud storage and esims are great, but they are also quite expensive and provide some inconveniences. So not having viable alternatives is very anti-consumer
Apple does not options.

Nah, you are an isheep
As an Android user, the most interesting thing about iPhone 14s would be the 48mp binning camera. When Android world adopted it, it actually pushed overall camera quality backwards. Snapdragons were unable to provide a fluid camera stream (even now only flagship SoCs can handle videos at 4k or quick photos in tricky lights) which resulted in stuttery camera/video experience and odd dynamic range at times (faded skin tones etc.). I would like to see if Apple's superior silicon can use 48mp sensor like a regular 12mp one or it would also go through same problems.
Also, appreciate the AirPods case tracking features, we barely lose earbuds alone. I got my Galaxy Buds+ lost somewhere in my home and I am unable to find them despite having buds tracking (rendering it useless). Considering that buds+ were difficult to find in my country and there are not many earbuds with comfy fit and day-long single charge life, I would have loved if I could track my lost pair.
Motorola has also had quad pixel binning for many years. First phone I had with it was the Moto One Hyper.

REMOVING SIM TRAYS IS 100% DEAL BREAKER. When traveling internationally it is often required to buy a cheap local SIM to get cell service! I also swap back and forth between my nice phone and a burner phone when traveling to reduce theft risk! This alone is a total 100% deal breaker for me. I travel internationally every year, and it's already very difficult to get a sim in a foreign country in a foreign language -- imagine trying to buy and troubleshoot an e-sim in a foreign language!
Also, I regularly swap between my main iphone 13 pro and an old iphone 7 with no apps to "technology detox".
Also it costs 2x compared to normal in here.
Yeah, gotta agree. I have a 12 mini, and bought my wife one as well. We both travel between countries ( she goes home on a regular occasion, and I travel when corona isn't around ). Going e-sim is such a kick in the face. I'm not buying an iPhone again unless they fix this.
That's if the country even supports esim...
Absolutely spot on. Dual Nano SIM is a must for me as well. Personally I use Vivo phones that have a tray for two physical nano SIM's plus a microSD card (yep, two real SIM's and a microSD card). This whole eSIM thing is a gimmick that is being used to further restrict your use of your phone (how long until you can't unlock handsets because the eSIM can't accept another carrier) and to discourage travel (only NZ, AUS, CAN, USA, UK and parts of Asia are going for eSIM) as most of the world don't support or care about eSIM and likely never will. Plus as many have mentioned here eSIM is at least double the price of a normal SIM. eSIM is a solution to a made up problem that no normal person has ever had!
So you don't even use the iphone but a burner phone and still not having a sim tray is problem? lol....
I think this is one of your best / funniest intros ever and I love how you’re saying everything the rest of us are thinking, lol. Kudos!
The dynamic island is not just pill shaped it is also a dot and pill shape if you are using voice record with an app pulled up as shown on apple's website
The combination of 1 esim and 1 nano like the earlier models had was so much better than 2 esims.
Not all providers can have esims currently, and traveling quite a lot having esim for my primary and physical for whatever I'm using abroad was very useful
Yeah, its weird. I wonder why they put in this functionality. It doesnt seem like its there for the users convenience. Maybe its some kind of mind trick for users to make the iphone seem more like some magical portal to the aether, by removing the phisical "foreign" SIM. Or Apple has some business/financial gambit lined up with eSIM tech in the future. Thats just my guess.
was very useful, now say bye bye to functionality. whatd u expect from apple?
Well to be fair, Apple has pushed carriers to adopt in the past and this will push carriers again, but it is still a major issue with foreign carriers, I could see a decent market for non-north american models cropping up.
Having a physical sim card makes temporarily switching phones easier. Suppose you dropped your new esim only iPhone 14 and the screen cracked and you get it repaired, now you have to use a backup that supports esim (or be without a phone temporarily) rather than just popping out the sim and putting it into literally any unlocked/carrier compatible phone and using that temporarily while your phone is being repaired. Granted a lot of people may have an older iPhone that supports esim, but you may not (especially if you sell your old phones after getting a new one). This is why I switched back from esim to a physical sim card on my main plan.
@@nsshurtz you can just easily order a physical sim with the same number as your esim to your carrier...
It's one of those Apple reductions of complexity in manufacturing that gets touted as a feature.

No physical sim could be a way for carriers to lock a phone to you if you’re on a payment plan, instead of to the network, like you can currently do. This heavily impacts the resale market.
Plus unless a countries infrastructure supports eSIM, they won't work. In most of the world you can't get an eSIM plan and can only get a physical SIM so you're screwed without a SIM slot. I'm not 100% sure what the incompatibility is (maybe its a setting, maybe its a hardware thing) but I've found that eSIM's don't work across most of Europe and Central America. If you need a good dual SIM phone, check out Vivo phones. Most, but not all models are dual nano SIM plus microSD. Some of their higher models are dual nano SIM but don't have a microSD slot as they have huge internal storage (0.5-1TB).

You don’t have to remove an eSIM to add another one. You can have several eSIMs installed, the thing is that only 2 can be activated. You can just turn them on and off depending on what you need to use
If you have 2 physical SIM cards in an Android phone, you can turn off one without pulling it out.

Kinda interesting what Google's next move will be. The Pixels have had car crash detection for years now and Google has constantly promoted that but now that Apple has it they kind of need a new groundbreaking feature... Obviously, satelite connectivity is rumored for Android 14 but Apple seems to have beat Google too that... Luckily Huawei beat Apple by a few hours for their phones! Just really interested to see the development of Pixels as a lot of their features are becoming available for iPhone with very "creative" renames.
Car Crash Detection (Google) -> Crash Detection (Apple) 😅

Hey Linus, just wanted to say at 5:50 you had the right idea, but not 100% accurate. On iPhone you can add more than 2 eSIMs but you can only have two lines active at once. So you wouldn't need to actually remove a plan to make way for another. You can just press to reactivate the line (which granted isn't instant, can take a little while for the carrier to process on their end).
Linus doesn’t do research lately, just follows the hype
@@whoknows4122 To be fair that is a very niche piece of information that you would probably only know if you use more than two eSIMs already
Even if he was right, if you are traveling internationally, I think adding and removing eSIMs would be just part of all the other crap you have to go through to get through whatever border crossings you have to go through, and it wouldn’t be that big of a deal.
I have 3 lines on my iPhone 13 Pro Max, one from the USA and other 2 from Brazil. I think the limit is 8 and he was wrong saying it is a struggle to add and remove lines. I went to 2 local carriers here in Brazil once and they did everything, now all I have to do is turn them on or off in the settings menu.
On my trip to the United States I downloaded the T-Mobile eSIM app to activate one line using the Airport’s wifi and 3minutes later I had 5G fully working. eSIMs are way better, convenient + I can use 2 of them at the same time and safer because no one can remove them without my permission (in case of lost/stolen phone) 👍🏻

@@casparhughey5651 Nah, just very slow workers. They're happy to let something cook in the oven before it comes to fruition. They put in a patent for the Satellite thing back in like 2020 and we're just now seeing it come out. If it's something easy to do, other companies generally will just try to engineer an Apple idea and rush it to market so they can say they had it first. Rarely does someone do something that Apple didn't engineer first.
Two things I actually like from the event. 1. Satellite connectivity for emergency use. I've wanted something like this to act as a backup or a stand-alone item to my existing garmin satellite device when I don't need the other features it offers. I go into the back country a lot and plenty of times it'd be nice to leave the garmin at home but still have SOS. 2. The watch ultra with the longer battery and red light mode. Now at $800 I am never going to buy one as that is insane but those two things make me excited for future competing watches to hopefully feature match. Both again would be really nice when out camping and such. Longer battery life is obvious and the red light is really nice at night when you are trying to not destroy your night vision with white light from anywhere.
I checked the pricing as it would be great for my ultra marathon running partner, but similar watches from Garmin etc are also crazy expensive and I trust the build quality on Apple, judging by previous Garmins where the straps are totally unreliable.

My guess is, that for about a year Samsung will make fun of that just to remove the SIM tray too in roughly a year, at least on the flagships.
As far as I understood it, you can add as many eSIMs as you wish, but just 2 can be active at a time. So no deleting SIM profiles all the time when traveling.
