Ha ha I was in a production of this in high school but the drama group was a bit risque and the director pretty much stuck to the traditional direction. We had a TONNE of complaints from parents! We thought it was the best thing ever though!
Before I did this show in high school as a freshman the director went out to warn the audience that we “won’t get all the way undressed.” We had beautiful handmade gowns with Velcro over black silk chemises and shorts which were lined in the same color lace as our jewel toned dresses. Beautiful
I love this number in the show. A few years ago I saw a Regional Production of Guys and Dolls. The point in the song where they remove the clothing, Adelaide had a costume malfunction and what she was wearing underneath began to also fall off. The chorus girls jumped into action and surrounded her as they finished the number.
They replaced "Go Hollanderize it" with "go shorten the sleeves" which really makes no sense. "Hollanderizing" was a process of dyeing and treating cheap muskrat fur to make it look and feel like the much more expensive mink. Many "mink" coats in the 40 and 50s were actually Hollanderized muskrat. So that implies that Nathan gave Adelaide a cheap imitation mink, in which case, she could afford to give it up!!
"Tell them to Hollanderize it for some other dame" was the first verse. "Go shorten the sleeves for somebody else" was the next verse. Hilarously, if you google the lyrics, you will find the phrase "And tell them to alter and rise it" which clearly is a garbling of "Hollanderize it" by someone who had never heard of the term.
The Hollander family who invented the process set the record straight in the NY Times. Very interesting. www.nytimes.com/1992/07/21/opinion/l-what-adelaide-meant-about-hollanderizing-030392.html
Also the original line in the first verse was “That was late ‘38, I recall.” Wonder why they changed it to “What generous gifts, I recall.” That doesn’t really make much sense either. Oh, and this isn’t aimed at Nathan, it’s just a song she sings for her job as an actress/singer, just a part she’s playing.
Saw this film first time when I was very young. Always loved this scene. It’s four in the morning and just came to mind. Thanks so much for posting. I hoped it would be here somewhere. 🤗🤗🤗 going to watch it again now. 🥰
Bro my song is different than that is like from my ballet class I mean my tap class yes I do have tap class but my song is different than that it’s different but it’s tape back and mink like what but I don’t have that dress I just got my costume last Saturday and I only go on Saturdays like my dad picked it when is my first day
My older sister does a great Vivian Blaine impersonation, and her and her mother-in-law once custom made a fur coat for Hillary Clinton-and my older sister is also a staunch Trump supporter! True story!
Yes because of the curves that they had and they didn't have any plastic surgery like The Kardashians. These women are the real deal and in that sexy underwear that they are dancing in, they are Sex Symbols as well.
what a freakky number I would imagine that the studio execs were horrified at this nightmare of a drag show. the thick makeup the old broads the wig caps short hair
Man alive, the orchestration in this number is so brilliant. That ending gets me every time. And of course the dancers are amazing, love Vivian Blaine
Nelson Riddle among the arrangers, I noticed today
I'm doing this as a school play now and we saw this in school *everybody screamed at this part*
hot box dancer here, we had tear away dresses💀
@@salmon3862 i didnt expect the return here after 3 years but *what-* 💀
Oh, nowwwww this song makes sense. Weird that this is so widely-performed in high schools when it only makes any sense as a burlesque number

Wow! These girls got style!! I wish I could do the same of tearaway costumes during plays.
This, along with West Side Story are two of the musicals I never did get to be in

Yes, good dancing but I am mostly wowed by those beautiful dresses. I want one!
I conducted an eight-performance run of this show at a community theater in Minneapolis, forty years ago. I still remember all the cues!
im a hot box dancer in my schools production of this and im so excited for this song!!!
I'm a in the show to
Me too!
lol they cut this song from my school's production (im not a hot box dancer btw)
i am too! this is my first musical and they still told me that I’m a hot box girl singer/dancer
me too!

Shortened sleeves implies it was bought for someone with longer arms. "You mean you gave me a gift you bought for some other dame?"
@@jeffgodsey541 huh. I was thinking it meant something along the lines of showing more skin

They are SO cute!
One of the better numbers in the show.
One of my favorites

This song is freaking iconic. Well, not just the song, but this performance in general.
3:34 i don’t know why I really like this move lol
I love it too! Think it’s a classic one from that era?
2:56 Fosse can u hear me...
I wonder how many takes before they got this right. At 3.41 it goes wrong, one of the girls steps on the mink of her neighbour.

has an almost 3 d quality how they do that ?
As Nikos Kazantzakis says :
"There's only one woman in the world. One woman with many faces"
I love you baby let’s run anyway anywhere maybe even Paris I am half French after all

How did get those dresses off so easily because there was no velcro then, and how did they pick everything up so fast without dropping anything?
Velcro may not have been available, but snaps were.
Maybe there were snaps on the sides.
What is the name of the lead singer in this number my school is doing a musical and I wanna be her😂
Adelaide
Adelaide!!
mothballs and vagisil...i can smell it from here !!
Was it Mae West who said “I never hated a man enough to give him his diamonds 💍 back”?😅
Looked it up, it was Zsa Zsa Gabor.
Ya no viven
The godfather
Love the song. Love VB. The choreography is just hideous.
I agree wholeheartedly
Have you found a good opthamologist yet for your obvious vision difficulties?
Folks, these are what you call "women" ....
Yes because of the curves that they had and they didn't have any plastic surgery like The Kardashians. These women are the real deal and in that sexy underwear that they are dancing in, they are Sex Symbols as well.
Good song and choreography but the Production Code kept it from being more interesting.

All the indignant moralising, just a cover for a strip act. Brilliant.
Now, let’s do “take back your bra, etc.”
