Saw this on Broadway with Nathan and Faith in 1992, sheer perfection. I have been lucky enough to see Nathan perform from high school he grew up close by. We knew he would be famous. Faith embodies Adelaide.
I watched a cast reunion on zoom from a couple of years ago (it's on YT), and Faith Prince said that during rehearsals it was Nathan's idea for her to really whack him with her purse. His comic instincts are impeccable.
I understand that people say "Always be yourself when u perform". But honestly if I were to play Nathan Detroit, I would really wanna do it exactly how Nathan Lane did. He killed it
Well, there's two of the greats! I had the great good fortune to see Nathan Lane (along with Matthew Broderick) in The Producers. This guy is amazing. And Faith Prince is probably the best Adelaide ever.
Fun fact, Nathan Lane did this role in a smaller production very early in his career, and was the reason he picked the name Nathan when he joined Equity!
Oh, this number is just phenomenal!! They're both exceptional! I've watched this so many times! 😭😂 They capture so much emotion in such a short piece - anger, melodrama, despair. The fight singing! So clever! Faith is incredible, and Nathan serves it right back, which is so important in a battle song like this, that they each hold their own and elevate the other. Wow! Maybe I keep watching it because it's just so good! Musical theatre at its absolute best! 👏👏👏
I never knew this song could be so funny! :D Half the time I'm cooing "oh no, precious babies" and the other half I'm wheezing with laughter. This is gold!
@@brersam9473 It's very well-staged. The three degrees of "I could honestly die" are eventually really touching, which is a place this number doesn't really need to go, but it works with her next scene, and is totally earned.
I saw this show. I saw the one with Oliver Platt. I've seen countless high school productions. I was IN a high school production. And this is by far the best production ever.
I wonder how many realize that Nathan, and the majority of his co-horts and the other gangster types are mostly Jewish (certainly not Sky Masterson, but Big Julie, Harry the Horse, Benny Southstreet, etc.) And in this song, it's "So, Nu...", not "So, new..." as many think. Nu is a yiddishism which is kind of an interjection as a transition in a conversation--kind of like 'well' or 'annnd' or 'soooo'.
Nathan is is fantastic. Is so underrated in Hollywood, it's a shame. I Love mouse hunt, the birdcage, A Funny Thing happened in the forum, the nance, The front page, The iceman cometh or Angels in America. And rencently is awesome in TV show Penny dreadful : City of angels.
EvenEvenOdd Um, no, that's a huge part of what makes Faith's Adelaide so special. She really soaks in the comedy, and most importantly, the humanity of what's going on. This is perfection.
Ironically, Nathan's simple, almost childish part in this duet was written specifically for the limited vocal range of the great Sam Levene, the original Broadway show's Nathan Detroit, who couldn't sing at all but was so perfect in the role's character.
In this scene, after being strung along for fourteen years of excuses and broken promises by Nathan Detroit for them to get married, Adelaide truly believes that they are about to elope out of town to get married, so she has gotten her hair done and is wearing her very best outfit for this momentous, long-awaited occasion.

Nathan & Faith are a treasure!
this is the best sue me from guys and dolls hands down
Faith can make you laugh and cry all in one song. Bravo to the both of them!
Was lucky enough to see them on Broadway too. They were just wonderful. When you're a theatrical performer this is the level you're aiming for.
I love how people start clapping and cheering in the middle of the song, both Nathan and Faith did an amazing performance. They're both amazing :)

@@Covarr How did the show go? If you don't mind me asking
@@Covarr Oh wow that's awesome. Hopefully the next show that you do is great too 😀
I believe that in his heart he knew that was HIS role. There’s a reason he changed his professional name to Nathan.
I just auditioned for Nathan Detroit and took inspiration from Nathan Lane’s performance; it landed me the role :).
Always be yourself. Unless you can be Nathan Lane. Be Nathan Lane.

Nathan Lane is also Timon from "The Lion King".
Probably?! DEFINITELY.
Faith Prince doesn’t touch Vivian Blane’s right pinkie in the role of Adelaide.
They both won the Tony for this, unreal performance
Nathan didn’t, unfortunately. He was nominated but Faith Prince did win.
Fun fact, Nathan Lane did this role in a smaller production very early in his career, and was the reason he picked the name Nathan when he joined Equity!
Faith Prince’s facial expressions give me life
Best rendition of the original that I've ever seen. Thanks for sharing.

This is priceless. Best version ever.
doing musicals in high school will always be one of the best things i ever did
I remember seeing this on Broadway in 1992. The entire cast was amazing but Nathan and Faith stole the show.
You, my friend, are one lucky man
I never knew this song could be so funny! :D Half the time I'm cooing "oh no, precious babies" and the other half I'm wheezing with laughter. This is gold!
that was really confusing?

Wow 😮 that harmony at 2:05!!
I love that pause she has before she yells at him! LOL!!!
I remember hearing this on Penn and Teller show on PBS where they show behind the scenes on the cast recordings.
I saw this show on Broadway. Nathan and Faith were perfect!!!

I love Nathan Lane!!
This song is the first Broadway sing is ever downloaded. Nathan Lane is perfection
soooo great - they are epic - the best - my folks saw the original on Broadway - family's favorite musical
Pure art. Excellent performances . In fact, these are definitive renderings.
this is the best version of this song
Wow such a different take from the movie version! Love it
Wow! that was fantastic! I have never seen a version that had Adelaide hitting Nathan! It was simply hilarious!
My right ear enjoyed this.
God, i LOVE Nathan Lane!
Just fantastic!

Awesome! I love her outfit!
The costumes are delicious
Utterly wonderful. Thank you so much for this absolute pleasure!

Her diction is flawless
I love Nathan Lane but jimminy christmas this gal is awesome
In Glorious Mono! Thank you very much for posting, it's wonderful!
How could you possibly improve on this?
By cutting down the length of the pauses before she sings: "I can honestly die."
EvenEvenOdd Um, no, that's a huge part of what makes Faith's Adelaide so special. She really soaks in the comedy, and most importantly, the humanity of what's going on. This is perfection.

I totally agree! This is the first time I've seen this version and WOW!! It certainly is incredible.
I forgot about the unexpected pathos near the end.
I LOVE THIS
This is brilliant ^_^
Now that's how you perform a show song...
Thank you!
Was this on The Tonight Show or the Tonys broadcast in 1993?
The Tonight Show. At the Tony Awards they did "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat"
@@anneza2525 The showstopper, naturally 🙂

To think I sat next to her in piano lab a gazillion years ago at CCM.
Amen to that!!!

Was he Timon from Lion King?
+Kimberly Fennell He was, indeed!

NOOO! STOP HITTING HIM!!!!!
im sueing your video right now!
*ADILAIDE*
The only thing I dislike in this is Adelaide's appearance, she just looks a bit too posh in my opinion. Everything else is perfect
In this scene, after being strung along for fourteen years of excuses and broken promises by Nathan Detroit for them to get married, Adelaide truly believes that they are about to elope out of town to get married, so she has gotten her hair done and is wearing her very best outfit for this momentous, long-awaited occasion.
This whole production was very ‘glam’ thanks to the incomparable William Ivey Long. It is simply brilliant.
P.. P... Pumba?
Nathan Lane voiced Timon.
This is is really great, but I like the original version with Frank Sinatra
#orthesfest
Great revival except for Peter Gallagher. His replacement should have opened in the show. Prince and Josie DeGuzman were perfect.
My right ear enjoyed this.
XD
I thought my headphone is not working
