- A busy string of days out in the fields...
Excited to finally finish planting our black beans, then our white beans. Rolling the ground after we plant to make sure ground is level and stones are pushed back in so they don't end up in our combine later!
And finally, THE CANOLA IS IN FULL BLOOM!!
Which means we run the sprayer to protect the plant against disease pressure with a fungicide application.

Absolutely beautiful seeing the canola bloomed. I'd bet that canola next to clover or alfalfa fields looks awesome in full bloom.
Mark - I agree with Ben Jenkins, the is awesome footage of the spraying of and footage of the canola field - Beautiful does not really begin to describe it, and I wish I had "smell-a-vision" on my computer so you could share the aroma with us as well. I have been to the Alberta province when the Canola was in bloom. It was the most gorgeous site and the fields went on an on forever. It sure it a pretty thing. I love your drone footage. It is wonderful. I also enjoy the tractor rides and you explaining how the electronics work and how the tractor itself works. Thank you for sharing all of this with us.

Your canola looks great. We are almost done planting too. Field Corn, soybeans and oats. We have haying coming up within tge month. Plus 3 pastures to turn over and plant. Pasture land will alfalfa, peasof some sort, can't remember what kind, and mixed grain. Sheep are some times help on pastures.

love the drone footage! since it's been explained before I actuly caught where the planter stopped while you turned and then started again! I wouldn't mind doing stones for a day....just the heat would kill me though😕

You would think equipment manufacturers would have designed planters with bins to hold a reasonably large enough capacity of beans to plant fields of this size. It certainly appears as though there is lots of room for the bins to have been made quite a bit larger then they are.

I love to see and smell the canola flowers. The yellow is amazing to look at and it is the first color of spring for us here in germany. In the outskirts of my city are quite a few Canola fields and this year the canola started flowering early april for us. And we get canola honey from a local beekeeper friend, wich just tastes amazing.

Hi Mark, Greetings from Scotland! Really enjoy your Vlogs, interesting and always well explained. I used to work on farms in the North East of Scotland (Angus) and we had been growing Canola (Oil Seed Rape) as they call it in Scotland since 1984. The crop has decreased in size since the early breeds that were at least 6 1|2 feet tall and used to lodge (lay down) quite often. I also used to work for a contractor (custom cutter) swathing rape for 3-4 weeks. I know swathing is common place in Canada but it was just about the only crop to be handled this way in the UK. This prevented the crop from being lost to high winds as the pods just have to look at wind and they shatter and made it easier to combine as it used to be such a bulky crop to cut with the smaller combines that used to be common place . However with the advent of the big capacity combines, the breeding of lower height varieties. sensible seed rates, the ability to spray on pod sealer,and the high cost of swathing it is hardly ever done now. The crop is ether left to die naturally or sprayed off with a desiccant for a quick even.combine Our yields were usually 2-2.5 ton\acre. It will be interesting to see your results when the time comes but your crop does look very good just now. Are you able to spray the crop off to die before cutting and are you spraying a sealer on.? Thanks

I wish they grew canola around here, that is a beautiful field. It will be interesting to watch you harvest all these different crops. If I farmed I would be a grain farmer, your wife works very hard all year long.

Beautiful drone coverage and canola fields!!! Do you loose any acreage where the wheel tracks are? I think that the Jokering did a real good job on the corn stubble. My college has just celebrated planting a crop with no man hours on a tractor, fully automated cultivation and planting operations. You have successfully planted a large area with minimal hours. I have planted the vegetable patch my father used to cultivate. I am a first generation veg gardener, man hours per area planted not looking great though. Nice video.👍

Your diet will not sustain the work rate you are expecting of your body to achieve. Yes time is short BUT at least eat some fruit.... the ultimate fast food, no prep needed. It took me years to get there but it does work. Keep at it Mark, great vids. End of lecture.

One of our local farmers planted canola and I would wonder what crop that was every time I drove past it. I must not have been the only one wondering because a few weeks later little signs popped up all along the field with "IT IS CANOLA" printed on them🤣
Where can you market your canola through in MW Ontario? Glad to see you guys finished, we were done the same day with our last beans, then I rolled and picked on the 27th still in that heat wave lol

Great drone footage! Can you explain/show what canola is. Are there seeds that grow out of the flowers or are there pods? I am guessing there are seeds that get pureed into canola oil. Please explain...thanks

At my grandmother's cottage there was a farmers field that would be full of corn. I found that getting through the corn would be tightly spaced but after a few rows there would be a lane that was easily walked through, but it would get bigger around curves.
Is this the separation of the headlands and the regular field?
Is there some double planting where the headlands and field meet?
With spraying
Does the sprayer have smaller nozzles as they go farther out on the wings of the sprayer or are they the same?
Does the configuration of the sprayer is like a airplane so that the wind will carry the chemicals farther behind the sprayer?
Do you use your GPS with the sprayer to make sure you cover all the field but don't double dip?
How much wind does it take for the spayer to become unable to use? If you spray while windy could it be carried off to another farm and not touch yours?

can you do a playlist on your experience/ results with the canola? Im in southeast PA near the Amish and that is definitely a crop not grown by us. Tobacco, alfalfa, corn wheat and soybeans i know something about but not canola. thx in advance

You made the last row of planting very exciting! I have a dumb question about the canola and spraying.....do the tires of the sprayers always go in the same track? Are there canola plants there that are lost? :) The canola is beautiful when in flower! Thanks for a great video!
Perhaps I wasn't paying attention and missed it but if I remember right last year you tool the planter off the fertilizer cart for edible beans I thought, are you planter with fertilizer this year?

Not sure about the laws in Ontario , but here in Manitoba if your children get injured on the farm because of lack of safety devices like PTO shields or Augers, your Farm will be charged in the courts and heavy fines or even Jail time possible.
How do I know, well for a few years not long ago I hauled grain from MB farms to the US, well this farmers child lost his foot in a grain auger , he had removed the safety shield earlier, so he told me about the law and he had to go to court now and was not sure what happen to him or the farm.

im addicted to watching honey bee vidoes as well as these farming videos and when u mentioned the conola is full of bees it made me think a good question. is there a local honey producer near you ? do you use them or someone to bring bees to your feilds? or do you just rely on wild bee's?
best crop of rape I think I ever saw.first time I saw rape was back in late 70's and it was the first weekend of june. I had moved to alberta and couldn't figure out what the farmers where going to do with all the radishs. they then knew I was from Ontario.

Correction, larger hoppers, not bins. Why do you need to spray for a fungus, may I ask, as it looks like a beautiful crop is well underway? What is the difference (could you post a video with images of with and without and address differences in costs/profits involved for those of us who think negative thoughts anytime we see sprayers on the fields) and is there any possible harm to the pollenators (my real concern) who are working hard to ensure you have a bumper crop of seeds, who do get sprayed with the fungicide in the process. You said that you needed to wait for the haze to burn off before spraying and yet, the earlier, the more hazy, if you will, the fewer the numbers of pollenators there would be on the field. Is there any planning on your part to try to spray outside the 10 am to 5 pm peek pollenators hours? I would think that just being wetted is going to cut that bee's day's productivity in half and I'm not concerned here for domestic bees but for native pollenators who have suffered greatly as crop producers have created larger and larger more ergonomic fields of monocultures, that are essentially deserts outside of the bonanza of the bloom of the crop, by tiling creeks and streams underground, the removal of fence lines and hedgerows as well as the spraying of ditches and roadsides for weed control. I can see that your farm still has it's wood lot, wind break and some hedge row so I am not only asking you about your practice specifically, but to you in your unique position as a leader of crop producers. Is there any awareness of the need for, or any consideration made to support these essential insects throughout the year? Walking through this beautiful field of canola, just a buzz with lots of natural pollenators, as well as domestic pollenators that you did not cultivate yourself (check out 'a Canadian Beekeeper', Ian Steppler of Steppler Farms in Manitoba) I would hope could make you aware of the needs of these insects, beyond your crop. What will they have for dinner tomorrow, if you will?

Think of how she feels whenever you say that to her. Anyway on to my questions: you work so hard on hay, is that just for the sheep; the corn is sold for what is that eatable too? The trucking channel... they need to be treated with the fungicides and fertilizer before planting. Fresh harvest isn’t prepped for planting.
