Our corn planter starts out with just a simple toolbar, but has been modified and upgraded with technology to plant more precisely.
When we plant precisely, we save input costs, time, wear and tear on equipment and less trips over our land.
We know what seed goes where.
We know exactly how much fertilizer and inputs we drop on every acre.
On our farm, we've invested in upgrades over the actual equipment itself. In hopes of becoming better farmers, environmentalists, and business people in general.

I see you picked up your hitchhiker. I have never had much to do with farming but you and Sandi keep this city chick 🐥 entertained. My daughter and son-in-law have purchased a 100 acre farm about an hour west of Brisbane. They grow mostly lucern and barley. They donated a lot to a charity Qld had going to get food to the farmers in the drought. Of course then we had fires and floods. On top of that came the covid19 virus. That has turned Queensland and the rest of Australia upside down. This week we are getting better. Qld school children in kindy,prep,grade 1 ,11 and 12 went back to school. Grade 2 to 6 return on the 25th May. I try to keep up to date with Canada. Qld has had zero new cases for four days. My son went back to work part time today he has been off for 5 weeks. My daughter-in-law has been working part time. My grandson is 11 and has been home schooling with his school iPad. He goes back to school on the 25th May. They live with us. My husband and I are semi retired. Crazy house. Hope you all stay well.
Interesting to here you story on Covid-19. Cases in Canada are slowing down and some of the less population provinces are slowly opening back up. As for Ontario, the kids have been doing homeschooling for a bit (just Jess now as Jack is down his college courses) and likely won't go back till September after the summer break. We're starting to slowly open things up and we'll see how it goes.
Thank you for the effort you and your family are making during these trying times. Your videos bring a welcome snapshot of real farming, with enough insight to make us (your viewers) understand more technical parts of the process.

Thank You for letting us walk along with you showing us how the planter works with all of the controls and monitors. As a boy growing up on the farm we only had primitive lever fertiliser setting Dad had calculated out. The seeds population was set with different steel plate with notch size and spacing. Be Care Full and Safe Alway's Around all Farm Equipment.
I watch a bunch of different farmers on UA-cam, cole the Cornstar , welkers farms , millennial farmer etc. But it is nice to watch a farmer that lives local here in Ontario. I’m in Waterloo Ontario, keep up the great videos.
I think these videos give us Viewers a Lot more info than we ever realized was possible. You have be Sharp and on your Game, NO question about that. A very important job for the rest of us to survive. Our Farmers are Absolutely Essential to ALL of us. Thanks for helping us better understand your daily efforts, Mark. 👍

The view from the drone puts everything into perspective. Amazing. Farmers and cattlemen are the real superheroes.
Sure is different now than 50 years ago. We still have our JD 2 row (40 inch rows) planter in the shed. Back then we thought changing plates for each variety was high tech! The JD 420 tractor was 6 volt and the lights were inadequate to plant at night. It would take a week to plant 200 acres if equipment and weather cooperated. It is fascinating watching Mark and his operation.

Thank You for showing us the seed planter the is very neat as they still use a seed plates of plastic how with a vacuum to pick up of the seeds. Farm life has come along way but wow I have to watch this 5 times to gather all the information this is so so amazing thanks Mark ...I’m in info overload but thank goodness I can watch this a few times to take it all in ...now I get what Sandi means

I grew up in the olden day's you had to watch fertilizer feed the seed drop was controled by seed plates with edge notches. Mark please Take Care stay safe around all Farm Equipment
Yes Mark. I'm a mechanical nerd..yes I'd be interested in how it works! Its so fascinating to me...growing up we just had all manual stuff..nothing fancy like this. Bet it makes life a whole lot easier!

Excellent content and explanation of what and why you are doing what you do! The comments on the interior of the tractor and the purpose of the technology was great along with saving the seed and maintaining your ground to keep it from eroding. A lot of folks don't fully understand the ecological impact of your efforts in keeping soil in its place and minimizing the use of chemicals.
Going through this quarantine and then food shortages makes me more appreciative of what farmers go through just to grow or produce their products- crops/meat/milk. It is hard work!

You indicated that when you planted two different varieties of peas by splitting the planter at 8 & 4 rows you were able to analyzed yield differences with your 8 row corn header on the combine.
My question is can you store the two different varieties in the same granaries or must they be kept separate due to different characteristics.
My gut feeling is that they can be mixed but I have no experience growing corn.
Keep up the EXCELLENT videos that include camera & drone shots.
Your quality of presentation and description has DRASTICALLY IMPROVED.

Thanks for the technical explanations, all the equipment has really evolved. I grew up in the 50-60-70s farming with my dad. You and Sandi do a great job with the videos. I did check corn once with a John deere 490 planter no technology there. Have a great day!

Hey Mark, I will say this. Planting corn today is nothing like how we planted corn back when I was a kid, 4 row planter, Hoping our depth was good, spacing was good and Hoped that the corn came up. Didn't have the air seeders or the liquid fertilizer or computers to aid us, Put fertilizer on by broadcasting it with a spreader and Prayed that there would be enough rain and sun to get the corn growing. I don't know if the simpler days were better or not, But it sure seemed easier and not so stressful. I learned a lot today watching your video, Thanks for sharing.

Mark - Love the drone shots, it makes farming look a bit like ballet. And then there are all the monitors in the cab. Farming is looking more like piloting a 747 these days. Thanks for the very informative description of how this stuff all works. You do a great job of turning something that could make the eyes glaze over into an interesting lesson. I am not in any way a farmer except in my impossible dreams and this is really interesting stuff. Thanks for explaining how you do the side by side comparison. I figured out the 4 rows of corn + the 4 rows of corn but had not figured out how you did the harvest comparison and you made the head connection for me. Great looking field and will be interesting to see how different it looks with the strip till next year. You must be looking forward to that change happening. Thanks for the videos.

Some can but with ours we still have to manually turn on the ends.

Just a quick question, as most of us in Ontario woke up to at least 2 inches of snow (gahhh!!!), how will this affect your planting efforts or the effect of the fertilizer you put down?
With little we've had here will actually help move the fertilizer into the soil off the soils surface which is a good thing. As for the planting efforts, they're on hold till it warms and dries up.

this has become one of my favorite vlog. Loved seeing the planter at work with the drone work as well as the inside look at the planter. It was nice to have field and tech work at the same vlog. if I may ask why are the seeds red? Glad to hear the snow will be a help and not a hindrance.
The corn seeds have colour due to some of the treatments we use to control seedling and root diseases especially this year as it's taking a long time to emerge.
I realize combines and other big harvesting machines get lots of attention, but to me modern planters seem very close to magic!
You mentioned using different seeds as a test of sorts; do you also play around with different levels of fertilizer, or is that a given? If fertilizer prices dropped would you use more hoping for higher yields?
We do play a bit with fertilizer amounts but not at planting time do too the limited amounts. If fertilizer is less expensive, we will take advantage and apply some extra but only if it is "environmentally friendly"
Hey there, have you considered using those empty seed and feed bags as ground cover between the rows in your garden to keep down the weeds?
How many litres or gallons go in the pop up fertilizer tank? Crazy how it makes the tractor squat that much

I recently watched the Ken Burns documentary, Dust Bowl, about the almost 10 years of severe drought in the 1930’s. That event brought about the strategy of contour and terrace plowing. Do you do any special plowing and planting to protect your land?

I have noted you make slite field angle shift from tillage to soil fitting then planting then a angle shift while combining too. Is there a benefit doing this not clear at first view.

Yes we're very fortunate to have the opportunity we do with farming. As for wealthy, we do OK but it always hinges on weather and that can make or break you.

Hi Mark, nice dronin! It looks pretty dry. Are soil temps a planting consideration or does moisture rule soil fitness?
I wonder how many spares you need to carry with you for those sprayer solenoids.
And they shouldn’t fail normally, but like fuel injectors, same idea they should last many hundreds of hours
Also with those air line fittings, is something hitting them? And breaking it off like that? Is there a way to build half a cover to protect it, or are the lines short and pulling on it
