Okay, I can see people in comment section are confusing O'Dwyer with Dyer. General Dyer was the one who ordered the massacre, and O'Dwyer was the lieutenant governor of Irish origin who justified and glorified this heinous crime of Dyer. Yes, both were douchebags, there ain't no doubt to it.

Let me clear that O'Dwyer was leftinent Governor of Punjab at that time.
O Dwyer told Dyre ki kisi ko marna bhi pad jaye to mat rukna.
People were angry on both Dyre and O'Dwyer .Dyre died when Udham singh was in Jail in 1927 . And Udham Singh killed O'Dwyer in 1940.

The ending scene "is anyone alive" is so disturbing, it's after the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The British administration was so brutal that they did not remove the curfew so people could not even go to help the wounded and many people including children died overnight. And the well also was filled with bodies. Udham Singh was a true patriot, this drove him to go to any length to extract revenge.

*Shoojit Sircar* the director of this film is a versatile filmmaker/storyteller.
He made slice-of-life, light hearted films like *"Piku" , "Gulabo Sitabo" , "Vicky Donor"* and then he made a film like *"October"* which is a slow burn, character-study kinda film.
And with films like *"Madras Cafe"* and *"Sardar Udham"* he has proved that he can also handle a big budget, grand scale film with equal expertise.

Like the Gorkha regiment, not only are they culturally distant to the Punjabis, but also geographically. They had no emotional connect with the Punjabi population and were literally alien to them. So they wouldn't hesitate to shoot them and won't have any regret. And the idea of nationalism, of 'India' being a union of different states, union of different people, didn't really exist back then. It was a mess. So the regiments were just following the orders by the people who feed them, keep them alive to do their dirty work for them.

    Singh's speech
Following his conviction, he made a speech which the judge directed should not be released to the press.[14] However, political activists who had set up the Shaheed Udham Singh Trust and working with the Indian Workers Association (GB), ran a campaign to have the court record of his statement published along with other material.[18] This proved successful in 1996, when his speech was published along with three further files covering the trial, and the Ghadar Directory, a document compiled by British intelligence in 1934 detailing 792 people regarded as a threat including Udham Singh.[18]
He started the speech with a denunciation of British Imperialism:
"I say down with British Imperialism. You say India do not have peace. We have only slavery Generations of so called civilisation has brought us everything filthy and degenerating. known to the human race. All you have to do is read your own history. If you have any human decency about you, you should die with shame. The brutality and blood thirsty way in which the so called intellectuals who call themselves rulers of civilisation in the world are bastard blood . . ."
At this point he was interrupted by the judge, but after some discussion he continued:
"I do not care about sentence of death. It means nothing at all. I do not care about dying or anything. I do not worry about it at all. I am dying for a purpose.’ Thumping the rail of the dock, he exclaimed, ‘We are suffering from the British Empire.’ Udham Singh continued more quietly. ‘I am not afraid to die. I am proud to die, to have to free my native land and I hope that when I am gone, I hope that in my place will come thousands of my countrymen to drive you dirty dogs out; to free my country.
"I am standing before an English jury. I am in an English court. You people go to India and when you come back you are given a prize and put in the House of Commons. We come to England and we are sentenced to death.’
"I never meant anything; but I will take it. I do not care anything about it, but when you dirty dogs come to India there comes a time when you will be cleaned out of India. All your British Imperialism will be smashed.’
"Machine guns on the streets of India mow down thousands of poor women and children wherever your so-called flag of democracy and Christianity flies.’
"Your conduct, your conduct - I am talking about the British government. I have nothing against the English people at all. I have more English friends living in England than I have in India. I have great sympathy with the workers of England. I am against the Imperialist Government.’
"You people are suffering - workers. Everyone are suffering through these dirty dogs; these mad beasts. India is only slavery. Killing, mutilating and destroying - British Imperialism. People do not read about it in the papers. We know what is going on in India."
At this point the judge refused to hear any more, but Singh continued:
"You ask me what I have to say. I am saying it. Because you people are dirty. You do not want to hear from us what you are doing in India.
He then thrust his glasses back into his pocket, and exclaimed three words in Hindustani and then shouted:
'Down with British Imperialism! Down with British dirty dogs!"
He turned to leave the dock, spitting across the solicitor's table.[18]
When this material was published, it was reported in both British and Asian press, the statement was translated into Gurmukhi script and distributed at the Sikh Vaisaki Festival in Birmingham, April 1997.[18] John Major, the prime Minister at that time remarked: "The Amritsar Massacre was an unhappy episode in Indo-British relations which was controversial in both countries. Today [8 October 1996] I am glad to say, our relationship is excellent. India is an important partner and a close friend of this country."[18]

A muslim could be Russian, Chinese, American, Mexican. Babur was from Uzbekistan. So people from Uzbekistan should accept the wrong not all muslims in India. In that sense what was the religion of British people during that time they were Protestant Christianity. According to that The religious group of British should be blamed, So British shouldn't accept the wrong, It should be Christians in your country or Christians in UK should have enough courage to accept wrong done by their ancestors to other religion. No other people has done what British empire did to so many countries, Sorry not the British, They should be called by their Religions, The Christians did to so many other countries.

TO ALL MY BROTHER AND SISTER, WHO MAY FIND 1.8 BILLION AN OVERESTIMATED NUMBER....
Despite a very high birth rate, the Indian population did not increase between 1860 (292 million) and 1934 (292 million). This is indicative of massive avoidable deaths from imposed deprivation that can be estimated as 745 million (1860-1934) or an average of about 10 million Indian avoidable deaths from deprivation per year.
In the 1769-1770 Great Bengal Famine 10 million out of 30 million over-taxed Bengalis starved to death.
Using Indian census data 1870-1950, assuming an Indian population of about 200 million in the period 1760-1870, and estimating by interpolation from available data an Indian avoidable death rate in (deaths per 1,000 of population) of 37 (1757-1920), 35 (1920-1930), 30 (1930-1940) and 24 (1940-1950), *one can estimate Indian excess deaths of 592 million (1757-1837), 497 million (1837-1901) and 418 million (1901-1947), roughly 1.5 billion in total or 1.8 billion including the Native States*.
WE CAN TALK IN WAY MORE DETAIL, BUT I FEEL MOST OF US WILL IGONE THIS COMMENT. BUT IF YOU HAVE READ THIS AND STILL NOT CONVINCED, YOU MAY GET IN TOUCH AND I WILL BE DELIGHTED TO SHARE THE SOURCES AND BOOKS THAT MIGHT EDUCATE YOU.

Hate is never the ans, even our freedom fighters never hated common Brits. What we hated is how their govt looted us to the point of starvation. It's the story of greed and cruelty of humans , remember all the shooters of Bagh were gurkhas. When thousands of Chinese were killed in Boxer rebellion , the Brits army was lead by sikhs.
So, always kill the disease not the patient.
