Achara is a very smart girl. She instantly gets the point despite this not being her language. I have seen this on several occasions that she understands the plot in no time irrespective of the language.

yes achara this is the problem of pseudo woke bollywood they would not cast transgender for the role, they did not cast a dark skinned actress in the movie BALA to play the character played by Bhumi, or cast a dwarf in the movie Zero etc . Atleast Hollywood gave a chance to Peter dinklage for the role of Tyrion lannister. Which in real gave dwarfs an opportunity
Totally agree with you... I commented my concern on the official trailer and got polarising views.
But than again you need some sweet to gulp bitter reality. Atleast they are making. Reality is people won't even go watch the movie if it has transgender playing that character. So its good they took this route. So I wouldn't call it pseudo woke. You don't crack down these taboos in a single day. You need to give time for people to be breakdown those psychological barrier.
If anything it shows the hypocrisy of audience not bollywood. And Im not trying to defend bollywood. But you do need to climb down your high horse and see ground realities.
It will limit the reach of movie.

I think a movie about this topic is very much needed as -
Firstly because in India even after the abolition of section 377, people are not so very accepting towards trans people and use horrible slurs to address them . Also most of the commercial movies till now, LGBTQ+ people have been shown in a funny way (let alone films like Aligarh and Margarita with a straw which were not very successful at the box office) .
Also I agree with Jaby that you do not get to see these type of films in the west, which is very much needed because few days ago I had come across this video of a trans influencer named Nitika Dragun saying she planned to hookup with men without telling them she was trans, which can be very dangerous as some men may be cool with that and others may not. I had even read that after such a situation had occurred a man r*ped the trans woman and left her for dead.
I appreciate Bollywood making films on such needed topics people refuse to speak about

Vaani Kapoor is a Cis Woman. She is playing a Transwoman in this film. Cis means someone who identifies as the same gender they were assigned at whereas trans means you no longer identify as the gender you were assigned at birth

1) Vaani not appearing trans seems to be a key element of film
2) Like it or not, this allows the movie to have mainstream status.
If make it an art film, lesser people would watch it and message wouldn't have reached most Indians.

My cousin brother died because his parents were unable to accept him as transgender...and they spent million of dollars to change him to male gender but eventually he was unable to take those operations and died at the age of 21. I think the choice for the Star cast is perfectly fine as to make any main stream movie you need to have Big Starts to reach the move to the common people.

@@Selinnaguz I don't agree. Your background shouldn't make a difference on whether you get a job or not. The hiring decision should be done on merit and you ability to carry out the role. I think you underestimate the actor's value as a celebrity rather than acting skills. And as it happens, Vaani looked has now literally owned the meme that she looks trans, a stunning one at that. You couldn't ask for a better fit.
I do think the casting in Bala was slightly off, in the actress using black face. I doubt that would happen in 2021, but there were good reasons imo as well, seeing that on-screen combo again for one.

She probably undergoes a gender affirmation surgery (sex reassignment). That’s why he said sex was Normal and when she shows him a picture (probably her earlier self) he understands the issue. In plastic surgery we operate on such cases and reconstruct their genitals and other features so that they can have a normal social and sex life. That’s Just my guess as a plastic surgery resident.

We do have trans women who r actors, but they r not given a platform to display their talents. There is a trans actor in Malayalam cinema who played a female lead (straight woman) in a movie opposite a lead actor who by the way, specifically asked the director to cast her as his lead.

@@iamlost-zoro2883 yes, producers cant risk of hiring them for big theatrical releases coz of many factors(mainly patriarchal society), so they are currently hired on OTT platforms at least. i heard trinetra, a transwoman is doing a movie or a show for Netflix. and Netflix show mismatched was written by a transwoman. so, it takes time to get more artists i guess.

Its totally discrimination to say you dont want to date a trans woman/man... because why not? Vaani is 100% woman in the movie, though i get his negative reaction but its still odd because shes still a woman. Its like saying ''i dont want to date a darker skinned person'' thats absolutely unacceptable. Because being light, being cis, being of a higher caste system, these are all privileges in societies. So you're using your privilege to discriminate someone and view them as the ''other'' or ''lower'' being.
That being correct. The question whether a trans person should reveal whether they are trans or not still remains before they date. Because if it is revealed later, does the other person has a right to feel cheated or not?
I think sexual preference is innate. Take for example food choices: let's say you are vegetarian from birth and you go to a restaurant, and the restaurant doesn't tell you if it's a veg burger or a non-veg burger. Will you be okay if you found out after taking a bite that it's a non-veg burger?
What about drugs?
I'd be annoyed and I might feel sick. But it would be my fault for caring about something but not checking.
If you care about something, it's your responsibility to let the other person know about it.
However, there are general things that we assume as a society that people care about due to majority culture. I would say not being trans is one of those assumptions at the moment.

Bro they show this in the movie. She even admits it’s equivalent to rape but the sex was consensual when it happened. In the movie she is post op trans so she is biologically a woman too. A lot of women have higher levels of testosterone making them more “male” than female. In the movie her character is more female biologically. But she still kind of admits that is almost equivalent to rape.
The movie relies on the assumption that they both are in love. They show they have a connection before and after the sex. So in the court of law it would be consensual. She simply hid her past life. It’s similar to someone lying to you they’re a virgin. It’s kind of that level of lie. Not rape level but she admits it in the movie. It’s cheating. This is why she doesn’t push him into anything. She admits she cheated him but the assumption is that they’re both in love with each other. This is why ayushman’s character has difficulty leaving her alone after that. There is a dialogue in the movie that “he cannot accept it and she cannot leave him”. It’s saying that he cannot accept he is in love with trans woman and she cannot accept to break up with him because she loves him.

What will it take for them to cast Trans actors for trans roles? Nice of you to make a movie on the issue but why are you erasing trans people from the scene? Can already imagine the "oh it was so hard and inspiration to play a trans woman" line from Vaani in every interview.
Actors should be allowed to play whatever,while I agree with you,it would be nice for trans actors to play trans roles but trans women are women and so I think vaani playing this role is fine and ofc she’s an actor so..this is her job
Because that will limit the reach of movie. It wont be mainstream.

the terms to be used are cis woman and trans woman, Vaani is a cis woman. it would have been so much better if an actual trans person was casted, because there ARE trans actresses in India.

There's this inherent debate and problem in which people mostly hope to know if the person they are dating is trans. On the other hand the person who is trans who just think of themselves as women having to justify every time they are trans is a challenge and problem.
For trans community being a woman is just being a woman. It is just this need to be seen as women even though they are trans. Which is understandable.
On the other hand would it be possible to accept the other person as they are is I think a dilemma.
