I started using BIN primer following your recommendation and found it to be effective. I've learnt more from your videos than from a lifetime of DIY. TBH I never properly appreciated the gulf between a true professional and amateur decorator. Thanks.
What can i use to remedy flakey/powdery paint on a skimmed wall? Can I apply BIN to bare plaster where the emulsion has come off? Its only a small section next to a gas fire.
Fantastic doors for painting! Very beautiful. I thought you were wonderful. Stay connected and stay safe!! I respect you I have learned a lot from your work. My friend.
A huge bonus with BIN shellac primer is that it sands like a dream. I use it anytime I want a perfectly smooth top coat, especially if I am spraying over it. It dries quickly, sands effortlessly, and produces factory finishes on trim, doors, etc
Agreed. I use it to not only prime stained/varnished wood, but also bare wood... cabinets, trim, etc. that I make from scratch. It is the best primer you can get IMHO and does not raise the grain like water based primers. Two coats (first soaks in) and light sanding between before the top coat produces a super smooth & durable finish. Not cheap at ~$75/gal. here in the US, but worth every penny.
im guessing the trick is, as im just about to use BIN for the 1st time, is not too much on the brush? or the runs will be too much. painting a few newel posts which i have sanded back to wood. been watching your vids for days so i dont mess this up .
I think Zinsser BIN is great although I have a couple of painter friends who hate it but as you know it's not easy to use unless you know whay you're doing and I have found that knotting isn't used often enough because those knotts are a pain for bleeding through, I normally just spot the knotts in first on bare wood and then zinsser bin over the full area but the knotting is just as good if not better for knotts
I shake Zinsser, it’s the only gear I shake. You’ve just got to be careful when removing the lid. Far easier than stirring. Love Zinsser, I’ve done loads of varnished doors and trim with it as a key
Do you always use Methylated Spirits for thinning? Lots of articles I have read don’t mention it much and suggest using white spirit instead. Looking to thin out Dulux Trade oil based Satinwood after applying BIN primer.
Is there any particular reason you used the shellac based BIN instead of the water based 123? I am going to paint some varnished wood, finishing with a water based top coat. Which Zinsser would you recommend? The shellac or the water based bulls eye 123? Thanks.
I thought I read that it was not advisable to paint water/latex over oil or shellac primer. Is that not the case? Curious what your results were if you tried already.
Of course knotting solution or sanding sealer are a mix of shellac and spirits. You can make your own with shellac granules and meths. Which is actually the same as the base components of BIN with its shellac, spirits and then of course the pigment so you don’t really need to use knotting fluid before BIN but that is belt and braces
Great video. I’m decorating a house with lots of trim that has turned yellow (maybe oil based paint), and some walls with staining. I was considering buying Cover Stain but I’m worried about cure times as the project needs turning around quickly. Also, does BIN or Cover Stain go yellow and risk bleeding through the top coats? Recommendations?
Doing floorboards, using white knotting, so can I prime with zinsser bin then use a water based paint on top of that? Going to seal with water based varnish.
@@PaintingandDecorating sorry another question, I’ve never had this, painted my bathroom at home, Leyland contract Matt mist coat, watered down correctly, covered with dulux bathroom paint. done a few weeks ago, however this one spot about 5 inches in length, 1 inch wide the paint has gone powdery, like fluffy, mist coated again then painted, but it’s come back, any suggestions or any experience in this, many thanks. @@thejtizzel you can try a coat of B.I.N primer but roll or brush on the same as the finish will be.. I.e. finished using roller or finished using brush.. thanks

hi guys , I'm just about to embark on a mammoth gloss job . hall way landing and stairs with spindles and 12 doors , I have bought Dulux primer and Leyland undercoat all water based with Dulux trade water based gloss , this is to be applied over the existing oil based gloss , my question is I do not have any Zinseer products but I do have Ronseal stain cover , will that do
You only need undercoat unless you have bare wood. Degrease your woodwork and sand down and it will be okay for the undercoat denib when dry and gloss.. water based gloss is no good for handrails or places touched. thanks
white oil paint can yellow over time two things can speed this up... one being no natural light and the other being heat. So depending on your room you may want to use water based none yellowing.. thanks.
Water based was first designed because decorators had the highest rate of lung cancer out of all the trades. It's funny when decorators insist on using oil based.
you seem to be very frugal yet you always seem to be using methylated spirit, it’s always about £4 a bottle whenever i see it, could you not use white spirit to thin the bin primer instead. Also would the purple spirit affect the white of the bin primer? I’m 22 and have just got into d.i.y, love watching how meticulous you are
Ha ha......I'll be using this stuff tomorrow on some flaking emulsion! The clown that painted the bare plaster mustn't have bothered priming......it's coming off in sheets!! First class mate as usual!
I searched and searched for info because my brush was dragging. Thank you so much for sharing how to thin the BIN with methylated spirits. Very VERY helpful.

Hi is BIN an oil based primer?
My last tin of b.i.n got thick so i added some meths. It did make it thinner again but it now dries extremely quick :O
Is it just methylated spirits in the yellow tub that keeps the brushes soft? And does it work with oil based paint?
Yes but use white spirit for oil brushes or keep them in water..

Methylated spirits for thinning shellac based such as BIN, white spirit for thinning oil-based gloss

I am going to paint some varnished wood, finishing with a water based top coat. Which Zinsser would you recommend? The shellac or the water based bulls eye 123?

The shellac is faster dry time thats why we use it more often.

Correct Bin is pigment and shellac, shellac has a shelf life, best to make your own knotting as needed.
Pure the bristle is the only brush you should use with zinzeer 👍

Another brilliant video. Quick question..can you roll B.I.N. on and if so what type of roller sleeve would you use with shellac paint?.
If you’re determined to roll use mohair. If you want to get to the next level use a sprayer.
We use small emulsion rollers that have been used for a while in emulsion. And keep them in a tub of mythalated spirits. Thanks
Mohair ! Definitely
Zinsser B.I.N tastic mate

Zinser primer will seal knots, just rub down the paint over the knot. Apply some Zinser, then gloss over it when dry.

Can you recommend brushes and make to apply the B.I.N.
Hamilton pure bristle best for BIN thanks
Is the bins high voc? Can you use while customers are present in the propety
Yes, perfectly safe. Smells a bit as you apply but once sry the smell is gone. Ethanol based i think.
Water based was first designed because decorators had the highest rate of lung cancer out of all the trades. It's funny when decorators insist on using oil based.
The VOC content of this BIN is 500g/L so yes, very high. By comparison, Zinnser 123 Plus (water based) is 3g/L.
@@popandu1170 My face burns for the whole time that I use it. Funny old James calling it perfectly safe. Obviously I don't use it very often.

Was gonna say, I thought Zinser primer also worked as a knot sealer? Seems a bit overkill using a knot sealer before applying knot sealing primer?
It does say that but we have had problems so now its a belt and braces approach. Thanks

Is there a technical reason for not painting the top of the frame?
If allows the wood to breath. Thanks
Long sacked BIN off for Coverstain combined with Owatrol Oil. BIN is not what it once was and also Coverstain levels better.

You don’t
B.I.N primer seals knots, so that was a waste of time doing it separately 🤔😄

Both the same really... although I'm better. 😋

No need to do the knotting, the BIN takes care of that aswell , just read the tin🙄
belt and braces so to speak
You don't need knotting if your using BIN

Bin seals the knots anyway so using knotting was a waste of time
