I have a fwd 2021 Telly. I bought it to replace my boat pulling Suburban. I found the tow capacity to be 1700 without trailer brakes and 5000 with. He boat weighs about 2000 and with the exceptional brakes in the Telluride, it tows great. I do use a clamp to silence the hitch and it tows really quiet. I get 22MPG pulling the trailer. Couldn’t get 20 out of the Suburban without a trailer. I get right at 30mpg on the highway with the Telly. I couldn’t be happier with my decision to buy the KIA.

For “suburban moms”? I’m a 38 year old single dude who is waiting on my order (and very excited about it). Please stop trying to make it a “mom car.” Nothing against moms, just saying, it’s not just for them and it ain’t no minivan.
The Telluride is loved by hot moms. And hot dads. And zaddies. It's a very good looking car and it's the segment leader for a lot of good reasons! Hopefully your order gets here soon - what color combo did you pick?
I agree. SUVs have a stereotype that they're for females only now. I see so many guys driving them and minivans. No one should care what you drive. I don't care what others think about my vehicles.
I’ll be attempting to use my wife’s Palisade to tow a stripped and caged BMW to the track this week with a u-haul. Didn’t expect to find a review that addresses almost precisely that scenario. This was confidence inspiring. Thanks!
Hah, glad it was so specifically helpful! Should be fine - as in this video the U-Haul trailer will force you to load very far forward and thus have a ton of tongue weight. Watch what you put in the back of the Palisade and try putting more weight in the back of the BMW if you can, instead.
Just found your channel. I like your reviews. Lot's of facts about the vehicles (lowdown on the levelling suspension was awesome) and the towing tests are very useful and something not many others are doing. Your presentation and camera presence is good too. Keep it up.
Nice video. I use my 2020 SX to tow my 21 foot pontoon boat with 90 hp outboard - total weight about 2,500 lbs. It does a great job and feels effortless for the Kia V6. I should note that getting from my summer house to the lake I drop the boat on includes about 2 miles of steep, poorly graded dirt road which the Telluride handles just fine. As to your comment about "feeling the slop" through the unibody, I couldn't agree more.
Thanks for the detailed review about towing. I have a Telluride ordered with the Tow Package (even though I just plan to use the hitch for a bike carrier), but it is good to know what it can do in case I have a need in the future.
Glad you enjoyed! It was a fun one to learn about and explain back to all of you. Seems to be relatively simple and reliable as Volvos have been using a similar setup for decades now.
Great review! Thanks! Nice to see more specific info on the tow package. We’re waiting on our SX-P with tow package (since 7/30) and hope to have it within the next month or two. Refuse to pay over MSRP, so had to order and wait.
Glad you enjoyed and hopefully your SX-P shows up soon! Which color combo did you pick? So many good ones to consider. Dealers in the DC area, where we are, are going NUTS with pricing way over sticker - especially for fully loaded models. Curious where you were able to get a dealership to agree to MSRP.

The new 2024 Palisade has a specific tow mode and you can even set it by the weight of the trailer, you have to break in the vehicle for 1200 miles before towing, as well. It’s leveling and sway control it should work pretty well. Good test, review and info.
Good to know! We'll have to try and grab one to test again. It's tough to get one (or the Telluride) with the tow package in our local fleet but we can definitely ask.
Heh thanks, the E39 gets bonus points for having three pedals and rack and pinion steering 😍 The only real weakness with the Telluride is current dealer pricing on 'em. We are hearing reports of dealers in the DC metro area charging up to $20k over MSRP for loaded SX Nightfall models, and $5-10k over for lesser trims. The Telluride is a great vehicle *priced at MSRP* as with any other commonly-available family car.
My 2021 SX-P has been absolutely wonderful, unfortunately my self-leveling suspension went out after 20k miles without towing. Apparently I'm not alone and the part has not been updated. Currently working with corporate to try and get warranty to swap to standard suspension 🤦♂️
Bummer that it went out so quickly. Guessing you want to swap to standard shocks because the assumption is it could fail again after 20k additional miles?
Towed with my 22 Telluride today and I experience the noise and having to get the electrical pin adapter as you. Thanks for the great informative video. Very helpful
Thanks for making this video. Was trying to find a video that discussed towing in the telluride!! Wish you would have measured the rear end drop.. whether or not the self leveling kept the rear end sag a. little bit. Sort of wish you would have let us know what kind of gas mileage you got with towing 5,000 lbs. I would imagine it would be the same as other similar V6 engine's. But it still would be nice to see that. We have a smallish 2,000 lb a-Frame.. and that would be helpful to know for a similar camper what the towing MPG would be - flat.. But.. this was a great video.. Appreciate how KIA added in the self leving suspension, gave you a 7 way that run's all the way to the front cabin. Much better than your typical unibody mid-sized SUV.
Great review, lots of good detailed information. We have the Palisade and a boat. This really boost my confidence in being able to tow the boat. Still a little hesitant about how it will perform pulling up long inclines like Parleys Canyon in Utah.
Glad you enjoyed! Palisade should perform similarly to the Telluride. If you look at how new vehicles are tested for the sake of tow ratings, they all use that SAE J2807 test that involves long inclines on hot days with A/C blasting so you should be okay. Some basic tips for any tow vehicle on big grades: 1. Shift manually if you are comfortable doing so, keep the engine in its power band. The Kia/Hyundai V6 in these makes peak power high in the revs so let it sit at 4500+ rpm so it doesn't struggle. 2. Don't try to be a hero and maintain 75 mph up a big grade. Sit in the far right lane and do 55-60 if that's where everything feels comfortable. Hazards on if your speed differential is huge compared to free-flowing traffic. 3. Keep an eye on the temp gauge. Every new car's temperature gauge is "buffered" in that it doesn't really move until things are already getting hot. If you see it start to move, pull over and stop, put it in Park and leave the engine running to circulate coolant and settle down a bit.
Glad you enjoyed! Just trying to do what most others don't, because we couldn't find this kind of thing when we needed it several years ago shopping on our own.
Thank you for the video. You are absolutely correct in saying there are very few videos describing the Telluride’s towing. I was wondering if you know what the Telluride GCWR is as I need this value to determine my towing capacity.
We don't have that in our notes from this specific Telluride. Kia claims a max GVWR of 5,736 lbs for the AWD Telluride (in any trim with 7 seats) or 5,917 lbs (EX AWD with 8 seats) which is a start. But not GCWR as asked. You'd have to pop by a dealer and check a few door jamb stickers to see.
Thanks for making this video! I just learned something new about my Palisade. I need to tow a 3400lb trailer and I was wondering if my Palisade would be able to handle it.
I tow a boat trailer with surge brakes with my 2020 Telluride. I had to provide a backup signal to the trailer so that the breaks didn’t lock up. So I changed the 4 pin to 7 pin and wired the reverse signal. Perhaps the uhaul trailer didn’t apply the brakes when you backup
Interesting! The UHaul trailers allow you to back up without any fuss. We’ve also seen some surge brake trailers where you insert a pin to prevent the brakes from working while backing.
Been searching for towing. Looking at 2024 Telluride stepping up from ‘18 Sorento. Will be towing short distances a 22’ Tritoon so wondered your thoughts on if I need something more? Don’t want a truck but not sure. Thanks!
Probably around the 4500 mark with motor, trailer and toon. So under the 5K even with Gas. But is it too close that it would drag on the telluride? Or is that a true comfortable number. Looking at xpro for the extra 500 but not sure why that’s rated better. Thanks!!
MY 23 SX prestige X-line did not come with a trailer hitch... did not have the option either when i preordered.... Was i supposed to get one with my tow package?
Are there any downsides/cons/risks with the rear leveling? (I honestly don’t tow anything but was thinking I would add it just because might as well? And the rear leveling sounds like it may be good even when not towing?) If you have any info I’d love it!
The only "downside" is that the self-leveling shocks will, as with any other shock, wear out over time and need replacing - and they can be a little more expensive than a regular shock absorber. But that's a "once every 10 years" sort of thing to consider. Even if you don't tow anything, they are good to have if you'll frequently have the vehicle loaded with people or cargo - they work the same way (automatically) to prevent sag whether it's tongue weight on a trailer hitch or lots of people inside.
I have a Kia Telluride and it's supposedly self leveling because I got the tow package. However I loaded it up with some mulch and drove for about 15 minutes and when I got home the back end almost look lower than when I put the bags in
Really enjoy your towing reviews. I'd be curious what your thoughts are on motorcycle hitch carriers. Specifically a product like the MotoTote or similar, with a sport bike, on the Telluride (or similar) hitch. There seems to be a lot of disagreement online about tongue weight vs the cantilevered weight of a hitch carrier.
We'd err on the side of caution with a hitch carrier. As you said, those carriers place a different, cantilevered kind of load on the hitch that is not a 100% analog to trailer tongue weight and how it is applied. The safest way to move a motorcycle with a Telluride would involve a motorcycle trailer.
@@OutMotorsports Thanks! I'm currently using a Rav 4 with a lightweight motorcycle trailer... it works perfectly, the only consideration is the added tolls. Going from NYC to NJMP adds up with a trailer.
Wow, unfamiliar with these shocks. So, if you hop up and down on the hitch, would they pump themselves up? I was just visiting a neighbor yesterday and a fella was there getting his boat serviced which he towed with his Telluride, which led me here to this video. I was impressed with this guys Telluride.
Heh, not quite like that. They need constant weight on the rear of the car for a few miles of driving (either tongue weight from a trailer or people/cargo in the back of the Telluride) to get the fluid moving and pump the shocks up to level. Jumping on the hitch will make the back bounce a little like anything else.
I am confused on the last part about payload and tow capacity. Are you saying add payload to tow capacity, or 5000 lbs is total working wieght, ie, what is being towed, hitch, and full payload on the car? I was under the impression that payload and tow capacity were separate
The Telluride is rated to tow 5,000 pounds. Payload includes what is inside the Telluride (people and cargo) and the tongue weight of the trailer. So if you're towing 5,000 pounds with a safe 10% tongue weight, you have to subtract 500 pounds from the rated payload of your specific Telluride. That payload is indicated on the doorjamb sticker. What is left in doing that math is what you can safely have inside the vehicle.
Thank you for mentioning the Nivomat suspension. I’ve heard about some issues back when it was more popular, and included hefty price tag for replacements. Do you know if there have been any changes to this latest iteration?
Not sure on changes, these are not actually made by Sachs but the same concept of how they work. Looks like one replacement shock is about $800: www.wholesalekiaparts.com/oem-parts/kia-shock-absorber-55367s9000?c=Zz1yZWFyLXN1c3BlbnNpb24mcz1zaG9ja3MtYW5kLWNvbXBvbmVudHMmbD0yJm49QXNzZW1ibGllcyBQYWdlJmE9a2lhJm89dGVsbHVyaWRlJnk9MjAyMCZ0PXMmZT0zLThsLXY2LWdhcw%3D%3D
I have a 2022 with the tow package and a camper. I use a weight distribution hitch with sway bars. Do you think I should drive the camper hitches up a couple of miles before hooking up my sway bars? Thanks!
Hey there - no, if you are using weight distribution you want to set the bars up *before* the rear load-levels itself. This can be frustrating on vehicles with air suspension as they'll detect the load and often start raising the rear before you can get the bars set up (which sends weight forward and changes tongue weight, i.e. how much load leveling you'd need) - in the Telluride's case there is no rush as it won't start leveling until you drive a bit.
@@OutMotorsports I know this is a super old video. But we've been fighting a battle with dealerships and trailer places on whether or not the telluride can handle a weight distribution hitch with sway control due to having a unibody frame. Tried to hit up Kia directly and never heard anything back. Any help would be awesome!
Honestly I think there should be an option for a 5 liter or more v8 because that current v6 is working very hard to reach its peak torque at 5,200 rpm and to pull 5000 lbs especially if there's a steep grade the suv has to pull....5000lbs may not be really heavy but it's alot for a N/A v6...but anyway excellent review
I agree we have a 2020 sc and absolutely love it no tow package but looking to go with a 23' with the tow package for pulling a 3,700lb camper. And definitely wish they upgraded the engine for towing purposes
The packaging of options may have been different in 2020 compared to 2022, but for the 2022 Telluride, self leveling ONLY came with the tow package. Best thing to do to verify is call your Kia dealership and have them run your VIN to verify optional equipment.
Yeah, it helps in the absence of a real Tow mode - or you can pop the shifter to its manual gate and change gears yourself. Given how the engine makes power, it's beneficial to let it rev more if you're towing, and the normal Drive programming may not do that on its own.
Okay, well either use a trailer with brakes or use a different tow vehicle. Nobody's claiming the Telluride is the end-all-be-all of tow rigs... anything of substance *should* have trailer brakes for safety, whether it does or not is another issue.
You do! But if you know your trailer weight, tongue weight, and weight of what you're carrying, you'll likely be within the stated GCVW. Always worth doing the math if you aren't sure.
The car itself isn't any more feminine than other cars (and assigning that kind of characteristic to any vehicle is silly) but hot moms absolutely drive Tellurides with amber DRLs. Hot dads do too.
You'll have to keep the engine revving in its power band, but the SAE J2807 test uses about a 7% grade (Davis Dam Grade in AZ) and requires a minimum temperature of 100° F at the base. AC must be running and cooling system must perform as normal. SAE does set a minimum speed of 40 mph, so the claim is not that you can do 75 mph up such a steep grade. There are further tests that use steeper grades for the sake of stopping and starting repeatedly. So, probably fine given the SAE test basically mimics the scenario you describe.
@@OutMotorsports thanks. Good info. I like the look of the telluride. I’ll consider it when its time to replace my 2018 Explorer sport next year. I like the idea of the much longer warranty in the Kia’s

Some basic tips for any tow vehicle on big grades:
1. Shift manually if you are comfortable doing so, keep the engine in its power band. The Kia/Hyundai V6 in these makes peak power high in the revs so let it sit at 4500+ rpm so it doesn't struggle.

However I loaded it up with some mulch and drove for about 15 minutes and when I got home the back end almost look lower than when I put the bags in
Hmm. It may be the case that you didn't actually load enough weight in the back to make the shocks do anything to self-level.
Will the 2023 palisade have these same absorbers?
What is left in doing that math is what you can safely have inside the vehicle.
do Tellurides have factory trans fluid coolers?
Great content
Thank you for mentioning the Nivomat suspension. I’ve heard about some issues back when it was more popular, and included hefty price tag for replacements. Do you know if there have been any changes to this latest iteration?
Not sure on changes, these are not actually made by Sachs but the same concept of how they work. Looks like one replacement shock is about $800:

@@OutMotorsports well replacement part seems about what I recall seeing. Gonna be spendy if they don’t last a good 1-150k miles on average.
@@OutMotorsports great, thanks! Going out for the first camping trip of the season (and with the new car) next week.
Do you by chance know what the GCWR for the Tellirude is? I can’t find this information anywhere.
Unfortunately we don't, it may be on the doorjamb sticker but it's not available on the press materials or elsewhere on Kia's website.
@@OutMotorsports nowhere in the door jam unfortunately. Only thing on the door jam is the GVWR, GAWR, and the payload 😑
Hi, I own 2020 sx telluride without tow package. Does that mean there is no self levelling system?
The packaging of options may have been different in 2020 compared to 2022, but for the 2022 Telluride, self leveling ONLY came with the tow package. Best thing to do to verify is call your Kia dealership and have them run your VIN to verify optional equipment.
I still bought air bags for my Telly to just help with an unnecessary sag.
So you generally recommend the sport mode for any towing?
Yeah, it helps in the absence of a real Tow mode - or you can pop the shifter to its manual gate and change gears yourself. Given how the engine makes power, it's beneficial to let it rev more if you're towing, and the normal Drive programming may not do that on its own.

Thank you very much! Picking up a 2022 in a few days.
My boat and trailer is 4,100 wet.. I am tempted.
Nice video.. beautyful sweater.
can you do this with 23/24 hyundai palisade?
We can certainly try! Have to make sure Hyundai has one available with the towing package in our local fleet. If they do, we'll snag it.
Should put in Smart mode when towing not Sport.
The NUMBER ONE PROBLEM IS THAT WITHOUT TRAILER BRAKES, TRAILER WEIGHT LIMIT IS 1650 POUNDS!!!!!! Very Few boat trailers have brakes....
Okay, well either use a trailer with brakes or use a different tow vehicle. Nobody's claiming the Telluride is the end-all-be-all of tow rigs... anything of substance *should* have trailer brakes for safety, whether it does or not is another issue.
You also have to consider Gross Combined Vehicle Weight.
You do! But if you know your trailer weight, tongue weight, and weight of what you're carrying, you'll likely be within the stated GCVW. Always worth doing the math if you aren't sure.
Don’t you mean Pythia remark?… 😉 💃🏼
OoO that's a good one 💅
What is this color?
Everlasting Silver, on an SX Prestige.
What was your total weight of the U-Haul trailer and the car?
This is not a cool/hot mom car! Do yall think its feminine or something?
The car itself isn't any more feminine than other cars (and assigning that kind of characteristic to any vehicle is silly) but hot moms absolutely drive Tellurides with amber DRLs. Hot dads do too.
How would it tow in hot california summers going up 7% grades?
