As I watched this movie and realized what the costumes were doing, my jaw dropped. The “misuse” of the garments made for a contemporary look that I was obsessed with
My mum is a seamstress for film and TV and she made the white ruffle blouse featured multiple times in Portugal. She is insanely talented in period costume, and I wish she was credited for her hard work, but 99% of the time it is only the designers who are credited.
Brava to MOM! My mom sewed all of our clothes & let me design many as I grew up. Just the sound of a sewing machine makes me smile. An art that is now being revived, although fabric can be difficult to find.
Even though I usually prefer color, my favorite Bella outfit is the short black coat with the gray tight-high socks and black boots. It's just so academic and stylish.
Poor Things was a real visual experience! Costume Designer, Holly Waddington really did her homework on the costumes from the time periods and looking amazing to wear. She deserved that win on costume designing at the Oscars 2024! It’s a real wonder for the eyes!!!
Refreshing to see a video, not on the poor things is sexist/feminist discourse, but on the beautiful costumes. They are definitely creative and worthy of praise!
@@donatellastraciatellaThe movie is neither feminist nor sexist. It's about the life of Bella Baxter. One individual life and the beauty and the horror in this life and to some extension also a representation for our life. I think the Movie was never marketed as "this is an empowering movie for all the women. It's the staple of feminism and its discourse" I think that came from the audience and the media but the trailers never conveyed this message. Atleast the trailers in my country. The movie is not for everybody. It has weird characters, over the top costumes and a disturbing premise. But thats a reason why movies, books, etc. are existing. To be creative and think about stuff that is disturbing and grotesque.
@@legopussy2363It has definetely feministic topics but I think that Feminism is not the main message the movie wants to portrey but a lot of people just grade the movie based on how feministic the movie is and therefor say its a bad movie. I hope you understand what I mean😅
I assumed Bella didn't wear a corset because of issues with dexterity, I wear corsets a lot and you have to be quite flexible and nimble to lace into one on your own, and she's still getting used to her body
I’ll bet that no one here remembers what on earth the plot was or what that movie was about, or even the main characters names, but we all remember those big awesome sleeves
This was super helpful. I was bothered by the movie when Bella walked around in her underwear and it seemed like no one noticed. Having the breakdown of child-like, half dress, structure, and progression really made me appreciate the storytelling through fashion more.
Being Greek and seeing how much visually Yorgos Lanthimos has improved is so satisfying and I am happy his getting recognition even though not all his works resonate with me. From his '90s MVs to the 2000s VERY wtf movies, like Dogtooth, to the more known later movies, like The Lobster and now Poor Things, there is a huge visual shift in the shots, camerawork, costumes, scenery, sets, etc. and his collaboration with Holly Waddington just clicks, it works just right. Maybe his movies are not everyone's cup of tea, but he has always had a vision and this must be recognized. Holly is an amazing costume designer with her own vision as well and I loved every single garment in this movie, and I am so happy you made a video about the costuming.
I was hoping you would make this video! The cinematography, sets and costumes in Poor Things were absolutely beautiful, it's the aspect of this film we don't talk about enough.
Spot on! I was poised to clarify about corsets and tight lacing and then you came back around to that. Then I was going to comment about the outfit resembling the bicycling clothing and you got that one, too! It is easy to see how much research you did to make this video, both about the movie and the clothing of the era. Now I need to get back to my hobby of appreciating media and pop culture by watching videos about the thing, but never actually seeing the thing 😁
Love to see an analysis of the costume design! When I watched the film that was all I could think of and focus on (and also that the film was a marriage plot/romantic comedy story). I ended up writing so much about the costuming on my letterboxd, I couldn't believe how much I had written just rambling on and on. Absolutely one of the most thrilling examples of costume design in cinema in a while, it reminded me of how audacious Eiko Ishioka's designs for Dracula must have been. I personally felt like a lot of these costumes could be on the runway now--- Thom Browne, Simone Rocha, Margiela, Rei Kawakubo/Comme Des Garcons. I hope the leg of mutton sleeves become a trend!
I think the lack of corseted looks does not automatically imply that they were considered torturous by the movie or their characters. Seems to me thar at first, she is a human in development and movement is everything for her so any kind of restriction or limit is unwelcomed even if it is supportive of her or her development. Much like a toddler does not appreciate parents restricting something that could potentially harm them or is downright dangerous, even if it is for their own good. Anyone spending time with a toddler knows what I am referring to. Then when she is getting older, she is more of a teenager and corsets might be appealing visually but on one side, she is starting to oppose and become actually rebellious and not just childish. And therefore, she is exploring her own identity through fashion often wearing unpopular or controversial silhouettes. On the other hand, she has an adventurous spirit and is constantly running away to try new things, from all “adults” or people in charge. So she would not take the time to dress herself in a corset which was typically al item of clothing that would require practice and ability to get into; or someone else to help. Much like a bra when you are young, it seems a bit like a hassle, specially when you did not requiere one as a child; and as you start adolescence as a girl, you are suddenly told that you need to include it in your dressing routine. In conclusion, I do not think it is hate about corsets but a commentary about maturity and control over one’s body as a woman in a patriarchal society.
I have been patiently waiting for you to come out with a fashion take on Poor Things!! When I saw all the puffed sleeves I was like, “HAS MODERNGURLS SEEN THIS YET?!” Because in your trends video I was like, they are crazy, puffed sleeves?! But then I saw this movie and I was like “hot damn, I need to get these puffy sleeves asap!” Great analysis as always! ❤

since its summer now, im really hoping for an analysis on Aquamarine 2006. the outfits are cute, the story was cute the best bad mermaid movie of my entire childhood
I was SOOO happy seeing all those leg of mutton sleeves in her outfits! It's such a smart design choice to ensure that, no matter how many liberties they took with the fashion, it maintained some semblance to the time period by adhering to a classic 1890's silhouette.
I loved the movie, especially the sapphic bits. I feel like it might have also been a reference to how Bella doesn't follow or care about being "propper" for the time period. But my favorite part by far was the costumes! I loved her growth and how you broke it down, thanks for another great video! 🥰
Your videos are pieces of artwork. For me all angles are covered, usually I pause a video 2 - 4 times and check out some background information, e.g. in your video the difference of fashion or looks in the 1880’s and 1890’s. Thank you.
Brilliant work as always! There were actually a lot of costume elements in Poor Things that I wasn't familiar with (i.e. tap pants) so this was really enlightening 🦋🦋🦋

"Poor Things" has become one of my all-time favourite movies - my sister also loved it and the novel and has been urging me to read it, too - and since I had watched it several times this year (here in Germany we didn’t get it until January 2024) I always wondered and hoped you’d make a video about it/its fashion - and WOW, you absolutely delivered, this was really interesting and insightful!
I think you should do a video on Divine secrets of the ya-ya sisterhood, I mean that movie is making outfits for not one, not two but three different decades and I think it did a pretty good job, also the cast for that movie is just awesome.
Im admittedly not the biggest fan of the costumes in this movie, but i really like all of your analysis videos so much! You hit it out of the park every time.

It straight up doesn’t make sense for her to have incredibly fast growing hair on her head but literally nowhere else on her body, other than the people who were in charge of making this movie wanted her to still be conventionally attractive.
The fashion in this film is incredible and playing on my love of late Victorian and Edwardian inspired fashion, although I really disliked the story 😅 (I understand what was being attempted but the sheer degree of 'infant in a woman's body desires sex and that's most of her story instead of discovering other parts of life' was deeply, deeply offputting to me.)

She doesn't like extra stuff getting in the way. While corsets weren't how we depict them, they are somewhat inhibiting to move in. It could also be that Bella wants to be able to dress herself. Corsets can be difficult to do up on your own and by asking for help she's almost admitting she's not mature enough for the world, seeing as corsets were worn by adults and not young children. She also probably enjoys being able to quickly undress and redress.
