Much like Giselle from Enchanted, I liked that the more time Barbie spends in the real world, the more practical and less girly her outfits became. The pink Birkenstocks are a neat touch that while she's now a "Real Woman", she hasn't forgotten her roots.
I still think Giselle from Enchanted kept her girly style, she just adapted it to be more practical/everyday. Barbie seems to almost fully shed her hyperfemininity by the end (not that there's anything wrong with that)
i just don't like how she loses her hyperfemininity to demonstrate character growth, as if it is something you grow off or bad. You can be like that in the real world, it doesn't define anything but style.
Sasha’s outfits also have a drastic change throughout the movie. During the beginning, when she hates Barbie, she’s wearing mostly black, dark shades of clothing. In Barbieland where she accepts Barbie and femininity, she wears a pink sparkly dress. At the end she’s wearing a pink top and a grey sweatshirt, showing how Barbie had a positive impact on her but she’s still herself.
I actually like her initial outfit when she first entered Barbieland: the asymmetrical purple jacket, white tank top, baggy blue jean look. I actually like it more than her pink sparkly dress. I think it’s because it still felt like Sasha. Sasha always seemed a bit more on the edgy side without being excessively so (possibly because she’s a ref to the Bratz) Besides the giant black platforms in her final outfit, it seemed too… childish? But that’s my opinion ^^;
@@lilil9752no, bc Yasmin is implied to be her curly haired friend. Just like her blond friend is implied to be Chloe. Just like the friend with black hair is implied to be Jade. I love how they let asexual Barbie dress in technically revealing and/or figure-hugging outfits, that don't feel sexy or like they sexualize her. The camera never lingers on Margot Robbie's body or contorts it to "spice up" an outfit with cleavage and simply lets Barbie express _her_ feelings and mindset through colors and construction of clothing. My favorite fit in the entire movie was her little pastel dress and hat number. I loved that over time she loses her hat and jacket and shoes and is just wearing the dress barefoot, because that’s what a lot of Barbie’s look like at home just barefoot with their hair down in whichever dress they were in
i love greta's take on barbie's style and the barbie lore so much. this could've easily looked like a tacky snl parody but the approach of taking a child's interpretation (which is the entire point of the doll) made it so beautiful in the end. the vintage inspiration especially really brings justice to the classy & sophisticated era of barbie before she became so drab (which also happened in the end but anway...) we still got those amazing visuals and costumes.

Barbie had some great looks, but Ken's fur coat look was my favourite. You can't tell me that wasn't inspired by Macklemore's huge fur coat in the Thrift Shop music video, even though I know it was also inspired by Sylvester Stallone's own fur coat look in the 80s.

I have a theory that the end outfit is loosely inspired by that one "debimboification" comic/ drawing of a hyperfemmeinine looking girl picking up a book and transitioning to a more preppy "nerd girl" style that was circulated in the 2010s NLOG era. It seems like a parallel to her losing her "barbieness" as she learns how to be human and dressing closer to how the average millenial woman does as she learns to be imperfect/ part of the real world, or something along those lines.

I REALLY love the yellow dress, I usually don’t love yellow but it really makes her glow and compliments the pink backgrounds. I also think that since yellow is often used as a gender neutral color, it might also have to do with her dressing less hyper-feminine.
My mom had one of the original Barbie dolls in the striped swimsuit when she was a kid. She says she wished she'd kept it. It would probably be worth a fair bit of money now!
I'm interested on how they are going to do Polly Pockets. I'm not a small Polly purist, but I do see that as my Polly. As someone who still has 2 boxes full in my basement, small Polly is also a rich and diverse world. Plus, the building clamshells of small Polly are unmatched. The detail, the colors, the aesthetic. I love how the movie makes Barbie into Miss Perfect to Miss Imperfect. Showing that her appearance was the least of her worries once she went to the real world and got to experience it the hard way. After becoming human, she still kept the "pink" in her sandals, showing that she's not forgetting her roots.
Also a nice detail I noticed with her last outfit, her bag and shoes match which was made popular around the 1950’s and might be another small nod to her past.

I remember the test of perfect costume design; if you turn the sound off in the movie, would the costumes tell you the story? This movie passes that test in spades!
her human yellow dress at the end also is something only a human could wear. you couldn't put that fabric with that fine of a print or with material that delicate on a doll
Actually Ken's jacket is the exact same worn by Schmidt in New Girl, who was known for having a caring heart but being a total douchebag most of the time. I absolutely loved the reference in the movie.
How they did not have her in any ballgowns was a crime !! They mussed the entire 80s era so bad !!! No secret hearts or super star 89 barbie ?!?!?! Really ?? And no holiday barbie ?!?!?! The green velvet one ?!?! Come on !!!!!
I just finished watching the movie and let me just say that i loved every single outfit! from the jewellery to the shoes everything was so cute stylish and not only just the colour pink but every colour you can think of 10/10^^💖 🎀👡
Hmm... while the symbolic position isn't great, I actually really dug the eyelet top and cut-offs. It looked good AND comfy. I don't know about the other toy lines. Barbie worked because--well, first, because the movie-makers did an amazing job, but also because there's a cultural discourse around the doll that was there to bounce the story off of in a way that most other toys just don't have. I grew up with Barbies, but also with an aunt who was horrified I was allowed to play with them, because of the body image business. I heard people having arguments about it 40 years ago, and still hear them... but I also had a book of photographs of historical Barbies, and boxes of homemade doll clothes. So when you introduce the movie, it comes with all of this social stuff automatically attached to it in a way that, say, Polly Pocket doesn't. Polly doesn't enter an ongoing cultural conversation. She'll just be kind of shouting into the void.
Love you video tess !! I do want to mention that they are actually barbies released with flat feet. I had one, so I felt weird when I saw the hole feet thing when watching the Movie
yup, barbies with flat feet go back to the 90s and were used for msot beach lines by the 2000s. but as they've said, this is mostly inspired by greta's era of barbie which might be the 80s and early 90s
Thank you for linking all this Barbie history into the video! I loved the movie for the most part but my Barbie history knowledge was void as a typical Millennial lol.

Loved your analysis! Watched this, clueless, confessions, mean girls. devil wears prada and moree. Do never have i ever from Netflix nextt❤
Hey girlie, I would ADORE a video with your top witch movies for the upcoming spooky season
her human yellow dress at the end also is something only a human could wear. you couldn't put that fabric with that fine of a print or with material that delicate on a doll
Actually Ken's jacket is the exact same worn by Schmidt in New Girl, who was known for having a caring heart but being a total douchebag most of the time. I absolutely loved the reference in the movie.
You should do a study of the style downtown girl!!
3:12 LEGEND, ICON, MOMENT.
SHE GIFTED US 🎁 ❤
How they did not have her in any ballgowns was a crime !! They mussed the entire 80s era so bad !!!
No secret hearts or super star 89 barbie ?!?!?! Really ?? And no holiday barbie ?!?!?! The green velvet one ?!?!
Come on !!!!!
I saw the movie two days ago and I loved it the message in it is awesome
Honestly, that blue replica of Dionne’s dress made me so happy. It felt like Greta was winking at Clueless for being a well of iconic looks 💝
I just finished watching the movie and let me just say that i loved every single outfit! from the jewellery to the shoes everything was so cute stylish and not only just the colour pink but every colour you can think of 10/10^^💖 🎀👡
I CLICKED THE NOTIF SO FAST WERE SO BACKKKK
When the trailer came out this video was the first thing I was anticipating
I am obsessed with your channel ❤
this was so good! so many deep dives!
The wonky glass frame of Chuck ENDED me
Hmm... while the symbolic position isn't great, I actually really dug the eyelet top and cut-offs.
Amazing video, Tessa! Thank you! Love from Brazil! ❤
Love you video tess !!
I do want to mention that they are actually barbies released with flat feet. I had one, so I felt weird when I saw the hole feet thing when watching the Movie
It was the barbie in a mermaid tale doll, she had the flat feet
I also had some with flat feet, they were hand-me-downs so I don't know any information on them.
yup, barbies with flat feet go back to the 90s and were used for msot beach lines by the 2000s. but as they've said, this is mostly inspired by greta's era of barbie which might be the 80s and early 90s
Thank you for linking all this Barbie history into the video! I loved the movie for the most part but my Barbie history knowledge was void as a typical Millennial lol.
I feel like I am stero typical barbie becuase I feel her inside of me and through my fashion and fashion designs
I honestly loved Kens jacket when he comes back from the real world. The big fur jacket was so good I loved it.
the polly pocket line at the end >>>> if those clothes aren’t rubbery and flimsy i don’t want it !!
I love that someone else caught the Anchors Away reference.
Omg I thought I was the only one that chewed on my PollyPocket clothes! 😮😂
18:23 I loved these sequences.
When i tell you I have been on THE EDGE OF MY SEAT waiting for this video from you 😍
4:05 i think weird Barbie also started as a totally hair one based of her *ahem* “makeover scene”, also for how often people cut its hair
hii, bicycle barbie is actually not inspired by lederhosen, but dutch wear ❤
