There is no lightspeed in this show. There is only acceleration. Gravity is also a form of acceleration. One G is one earth gravity. You are being accelerated downwards by 9.8 meters per second every second from being on earth. While there is no lightspeed, they are accelerating up to very, very high speeds. If you accelerate a car to 100 miles an hour in 5 seconds you are going to feel the car seat pushing on your back like a kind of gravity. If you accelerate your car from 0 to 1000 miles an hour in less than a second that pressure will be more than 40 G. You are now running into the kind of problems where the bottom half of your heart cannot lift the top half, so that's one organ that's not going to work, and I want you to try and imagine having 40 times your own weight stacked on top of your chest and trying to take a breath. That's another one. This is what the show takes into account. Also, there is no artificial gravity. Whenever there is gravity on a spaceship in this show it is because it iss accelerating. Flip and burn literally means to flip the ship around and turn the egnine on. You do not slow down in space, so if you want to stop somewhere you are going to have to spend time and fuel accelerating in the opposite direction of where you are going, and you have to start doing this while that acceleration is still survivable. Hope this helped, and don't worry, you will get a visual explanation of very fast acceleration/deceleration. I'm very much looking forward to it!
I started watching this and then read the books as well, it's a brilliant show, there's no light speed or anything like that, the show and books are based on the physical reality of space travel so humans can only go so fast before the G force would kill them, great characters as well in this show, Amos is brilliant. Stick with it guys.
@@NikkiStevenReact Yes. It is a 9 book series, with novellas in-between them. 8 books are out and the 9th and final book is coming out later this yr. Both of the book authors, Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (who publish under James SA Corey) are in the writing room and part of the production team. This is a brilliant adaptation of them. Edit: Ty was GRRM assistant and they have both worked with him. George is a huge fan of the books and show.
@@NikkiStevenReact It actually started as a homemade role playing game (kinda Dungeons and Dragons in space) among friends and a couple of the guys used the game adventures as the starting point for a book. In addition to the 9 core books there are also short stories that give additional background on characters and on specific parts of the setting, such as the guy who invented the engines that all of the ships use for their main propulsion. That short story is mixed into an episode in season 2.
@@NikkiStevenReact The book writers are also in the writing room & on the set the whole of the way as well. So there is no chance that this will veer of track (how amazing is that? Absolute gold!!)
Oye Beltalowda! Welcome to the Expanse! It only gets better from here :) Good catch on the drugs they have to take to travel. It's called "the juice" and basically lets them survive high acceleration scenarios, or high-G burns. The first few episodes and most of the first season throws a lot out for world building, but it all starts to connect and becomes rather intuitive later on, especially regarding why characters or ships navigate through certain environments. Space is definitely a character in this series. Yam seng!
Astronauts say that after spending months out in space at zero gravity, coming back to Earth's gravity does legit hurt. The spin gravity on Ceres station (where Miller is in the show) is only like 0.3 g (Earth is 1 g), which is why that bird can hover like it does. Also, it looks trippy. :)
It's not just having weak bones and muscles. If you grow up in weak or no gravity, your heart will not have the strength to pump blood from your feet to your head. Not only do your legs feel too weak to walk, you probably have constant dizziness and nausea like having really low blood pressure unless you lie down, maybe even having trouble breathing.

YES!! So glad you guys are finally getting around to this show. It takes a while to get going, but it is so worth it. Easily the best science fiction show in over a decade. We Expanse fans are dedicated and devoted, and most of us are huge nerds. So if you'll allow me a nerdy moment: When you think about space travel in this series, it's important to think about the physics of space travel--because this show is incredibly detailed on that front. It's not so much about high speeds being dangerous for humans, but rather ACCELERATION. Thrust gravity will play an important role in this show, as will the effects of maneuvers that cause high inertial "gravity". That's why they take those drugs in the chairs--so they don't stroke out from the G-forces. Anyway, so glad you guys are doing this!! You're in for one hell of a ride!
Ahhhh yess the expanse!!! Had no idea you two were reacting to this.. very excited! So different to most of the shows you both have been watching! Enjoy the journey

12:00 Flip and burn is exactly what It sounds like. In space to change direction you have to flip over and burn your engines to cancel out whatever momentum you had in the old direction to start to move in a new direction. The change in thrust causes the force requiring them to be strapped down and injected with drugs so they don’t pop a blood vessel and stroke out.
Mats Mårtensson Burning radially would only alter their orbit and cause them to sail past the derelict ship. Not to get too far into the weeds on this one, both the Scopuli and the Canterbury were both heading from Saturn to Ceres, before they both stopped at that asteroid. So there probably just a little radial deflection needed to alter the orbit to match the rock when the Canterbury slowed to investigate. This makes me realize that I’ve played entirely too much Kerbal Space Program

I was almost scared to start season 2. It couldn't possibly continue being this good... but.. mind blown. Binge watched the rest of the seasons. Some feel that season 1 is slow or something... I don't. Would happily have had a series like that that went on literally forever. "This week's glimpse of this possible future".
So aside from not wanting to answer the distress call because it would cost them money on getting the cargo back to dock on time, they were also hesitant because it might have been "pirate bait" as the captain put it. Put out a distress call, lure a ship in to check it out, attack and take over the ship and steal the cargo. Not entirely dissimilar to what ended up happening, although clearly they weren't interested in stealing the Canterbury's cargo...

They don't have light speed. They can accelerate fast in space, but they can only accelerate as much as the human body can take. They can also keep accelerating at a constant 1G to make gravity in space, and halfway through the journey they rotate the ship backwards, to brake by pointing the engine thrust towards the destinations, maintaining gravity. Very real way of doing it.

Except in space you can't brake, so to stop you have to turn the _"car"_ around (you'd need a whole second engine for a reverse gear) and hit the gas in the opposite direction of where you're going.
Oh, this makes me happy. You two are in for a treat. I'm glad you are sharing your Expanse Experience with us.
Steven: "Them leaving it like this"......Yup...better get used to it.
Mason So damn right! 😩
Steven: "What`s up Expanse Fans ..."
Me: *Smiling from ear to ear*
The Show is all about Realism when it comes to Physics, well shown by the power of Gravity. Just take a look at a map of our Solar System. It will help u imagine where the things in the Show happen. Cya next week :)
also shows just how goddamned dangerous space is WITHOUT Aliens
ABOUT TIME!! Welcome to the world of The Expanse!
thank you! we are excited.
zanbrocal you mean universe?
@@kermitthefrog4362 System would be better.
Stick with it guys.
that's awesome!! there are books huh?
Yep. And unlike GoT, it seems the authors will finish the books before the show catches up. 😁
@@NikkiStevenReact
Yes.
It only gets better from here :)
Good catch on the drugs they have to take to travel.
Ahh! Great choice. Ya'll going to love this one
Fail Whale!!!! What it dooski!!!!
OMG, I'm so thrilled you're doing this show, it's the classiest Sci Fi show for years. The characters and dialogue are fantastic in this show, it's proper grown up writing and the actors are up to the challenge. You're in for a treat and so am I now I get to share the experience again with the two of you.
I'm calling it now, Steve is gonna have Bromance with Amos and be prepared to discover Chrisjen is the best dressed lady in the Solar System :)
So excited to see you decided to watch this! One of the greatest shows of all time - you will absolutely love it!
💜💜💜💜
I like your reactions too.
Molly!!
So glad you are watching this.
They took their time doing world-building in the first series then it kicks into the real story That's what I thought anyway only started to watch it a few weeks ago and ended up binge-watching all 4 series. A brilliant show.
14:11: "It's like nobody wants to to this job."
Imagine walking down an empty road in the middle of nowhere, maybe like in a dark forest, and then you hear a voice calling for help. You follow the sound of the voice, and see a dark, abandoned cabin with a big hole in the side. There is absolutely no one else around. Do you really want to go inside?
Sitting inside, Shia Lebeouf!
The thing I love about this show is the detail. Everything is important. I've watched probably 8 times already, and I still catch things I missed before.
Read the books
You guys are in for one hell of a ride, one that is still speeding along with greatness! Such and amazing show and super realistic when it comes to the science!
This is the third show I started watching because of you two. Vikings, The Witcher, and now The Expanse. I watch a lot of other reaction channels, but you are the only ones I want to watch new shows with. You guys are so much fun to watch with and so insightful about the shows that I want to continue to watch your videos. Keep up the great content, you two rock!
So glad you guys are doing this show! It is addicting! And just a little side note, this show is one of the most scientifically accurate shows. It's not perfect, but it does a good job.
Yeah!! The physics and CG in this show is what really reeled me in. Everything looks like it was meant for the theater.
So happy that you're reacting to this show. Along with Better Call Saul this has been my favorite show over the past few years although it didn't start to gel for me until seasons 2 and 3, which were some of my favorite TV scifi ever. Kat and Sonny have been reacting to it too!
I am so glad that this is the day.
You are in for a treat, it just gets better for each season.
Best Sci-fi show in like forever! Good pick Stikker!
You guys are going to love this show, it just keeps getting better and better.
Ah man, I'm SO happy you guys are starting this show! The Expanse is one of the best things on tv right now, hands down. Welcome 💕
14:08 "Why are they so hesitant..."
Pirates. The Canterbury is a big ice hauler, worth a lot in ship and cargo, and a distress beacon is perfect bait.
I haven't been *this* excited for a reaction series in a long time. The Expanse rocks!
Oh my gosh, I am so happy that you are watching this. Since it left Fox I have not been able to review it again... I am so happy right now...Thank you, Nikki and Steven
I love this show so much, the attention to detail, keeping the scientific part as real as it would be/feel to any human, amazing production and cast.
Props to Steven for the 61* shout out. Love that movie so much. And I'm so excited that you guys are doing this show now. It's a little slow early on, but not too bad (once you get the introductions out of the way). Love that you're reacting to this.
Just wanna let you know that I've recently started this show because of you two. :)
it's wild
And so am i. And today i finished the 2 season!))) But guy's says "Once a week".(
Welcome. The Expanse fans have a name for ourselves which I won't mention here until they get past the episode that mentions it.
that is so cool... we love hearing that
@@NikkiStevenReact I started watching The Expanse because Scriptonite and The Normies were reacting to it. :)
Probably my favorite show still going right now, great story, great story, exciting action based more on reality than most Sci Fi shows.
I’m SOOOO happy you two have finally jumped onto this series!! Can’t wait to see your reactions! Enjoy the ride!!
I happened to start this show a day before you guys announced you'd be doing it and I've binged all through S1. It's so damn good and I can't wait to see your reactions to it!!
Season 2 is even better also it has one of the most visually stunning episodes I have ever seen since Blade Runner 2049.
Wait until you see season 2 and 3, this show keep getting better and better with each season.
And season 4 is perhaps even better than season 3
Yo what up dude!
I'm halfway through Season 2 and DAMN it gets crazy.
I started a couple months ago though.
WTF!!!! i didn't even watch the reaction yet but boooooy am I glad you guys are starting this show. Having followed you guys just before you started GoT... I always felt that this was one show that not only would you enjoy but also allow others who have never seen it to get on board the journey with you. Thank you in advance from London!
Another comment: I've never watched another show that packs intensity into every minute. For me, it is perfectly paced. There have been no wasted episodes and not even a wasted minute.
"We've gone plaid!!!" Hahaha, great reference, Nikki.
Have watched all current 4 seasons and loved it. Think you're both going to enjoy this!!
So happy we've finally made it here.
Welcome aboard you guys 💜
Awesome! I'm glad you guys have taken on this show! We started reacting to it yesterday so I was looking for others to see if we reacted similar. Nikki's face when it blows up...identical! You guys rock, as usual!
I've got chills!! I love your reactions!! I love The Expanse!
It might be hard for you guys to do one episode a week. This show LOVES to end with intense cliffhangers.
we have a schedule that we need to stick to... it'll be hard but we need to make that work for now. we will more to more when TWD ends
Outstanding! I'm sure you'll love this show!
Really glad you're reacting to this. My favourite sci-fi show, by far. Gets better and better as it moves forward.
YES!! So glad you guys are finally getting around to this show. It takes a while to get going, but it is so worth it. Easily the best science fiction show in over a decade. We Expanse fans are dedicated and devoted, and most of us are huge nerds. So if you'll allow me a nerdy moment:
When you think about space travel in this series, it's important to think about the physics of space travel--because this show is incredibly detailed on that front.
I'm so glad you guys are reacting to this show. It's amazing.
Yes!!! Can't wait to see you guys explore this amazing show!!
I’m so stoked for your expanse journey love this show.
Ahhhh yess the expanse!!! Had no idea you two were reacting to this.. very excited! So different to most of the shows you both have been watching! Enjoy the journey
I love this show. I loved the books since the series started and I have enjoyed the show nearly as much. I can not overstate how great it is that you guys get to have this experience too.
This series is lauded as one of the most scientifically accurate, especially when it comes to the physics of travel in zero G! The ship battles are awesome!! They worked with a team of physicists and other professionals to get all of those details ironed out!! Also,m Amos is awesome!!

Flip and burn is exactly what It sounds like. In space to change direction you have to flip over and burn your engines to cancel out whatever momentum you had in the old direction to start to move in a new direction. The change in thrust causes the force requiring them to be strapped down and injected with drugs so they don’t pop a blood vessel and stroke out.
Well, no, you could just have thrust to the "side" but that would probably just mean suffering even more flip&burn later.
Mats Mårtensson
Burning radially would only alter their orbit and cause them to sail past the derelict ship.
Hey guys,
Found a retweet of your review on Twitter and I’m now following you here as well. As an obsessed fan of this show, that I myself have only relatively recently found, I’m looking forward to reliving the excitement of the episodes through your reviews. Great job on this first episode and strap in, it just keeps getting better!
Looking back from Season 5, it’s amazing how much subtle foreshadowing they packed in, even years in advance.
I've never clicked so damn fast! I haven't even watched the reaction yet, but I can just tell it's going to be good.
I always love coming back to episode 1 to be reminded of what hooked me to the show, so it's fun to watch this especially after watching your reaction videos for the later seasons :) Great channel!
OMG! After I asked so much for you to watch this TV Show, you start it! Thanks! :)
I started watching the show shortly before the controversy with SyFy was going on. A friend suggested it to me and I decided to start watching. I had the EXACT same reaction to a lot of it. Was trying to catch names out the gate much like you guys. If there's one criticism I had at the time it was that I felt they didn't do a very good job of associating names with faces. But yeah, it is an INTENSE show and this first episode is a small sampling. An appetizer, if you will. Hope you guys are ready for the main course. I'm very excited to re-watch the series and re-experience it for the first time vicariously through your reaction videos. It's going to be a lot of fun!
I think I’m going to watch along with you guys.
love it!!
I am too. Was actually just thinking about starting to watch it again. This is perfect.
@@artdogg50 Just wait until they see the Donnager.
been waiting for you guys to check out the expanse for a while happy that you started
Really glad you picked up this show! I think you two will love it.
YAY, love to see you guys react to "The Expanse", so much good stuff ahead :D
I am so happy to see you two joining the Screaming Firehawks! Yam Seng, Inyalowdas!
Yeaaaa buddy! Ya'll are gonna love this show🙌🏻
I'm re-watching your reactions as I watch your season 4 stuff, for the sole reason of your awesomeness.
Happy you guys are reacting to this show. The authors of the books that this show is based on were mentored by George RR Martin author of the Game of thrones books. So the medium meaning the books which the shows adaption comes from is great.
And the book authors are heavily involved in the production of the show as well.
Only one of the authors was, Ty Franck, who was GRRM's assistant. The other author, Daniel Abraham, was already an established fantasy and sci fi author, who had co-written something with GRRM
You guys have Great synergy. Your reactions are almost constantly mirrored. Keep up the great reactions!
Oh my god! I'm following you since early GoT times. I always wanted you to watch the expanse, believe me it builds slowly but it's by far my favourite still running show. Enjoy it and Greetings from Germany!
Here we go! Been waiting to see this reaction video for a long while. Getting goosebumps and click...
OK, I'll take this as encouragement. I've seen season 1, so I'll have to pick it back up when you get to S2 so I can watch along!
So nice that you will react on the Expanse :)
So happy to be going on this journey with you two.
we are very excited
Let's Gooo! Hopefully this becomes you're prime show soon...a lot of great episodes. Once a week will be torture :(
Yaaaay! I just started watching this show, and I KNOW you two will really enjoy it.
I'm so happy you're reacting to this. I think both of you guys are going to really enjoy this show.
What an intro! Same here, I am super I intrigued and excited to see where it goes. Definitely impressed by the accuracy in the science and time taken to build a foundation on the show. Can't wait for the next one!
I will be honest i binged the whole 3 seasons when i first found it. With how these episodes end u two have some will power to go weekly. Hope you enjoy the expanse experience.
looking forward to it!!! we don't binge strictly because of time. if we had time we'd binge more
@@NikkiStevenReact I love that you guys DON'T binge. With the kind of smart, complex, intense shows you guys watch, taking time between episodes really makes the experience much more immersive and alive, both as viewers and for us followers.
Yessss!! I'm so happy you two reacting the expanse!
I started watching this show recently and it’s awesome - I’m so happy that you guys are reacting to it, cos I love your channel.
And thank you Nikki for the Spaceballs reference.
So thrilled that you’re watching the Expanse! Best hard SF show on tv since...maybe ever. As others have commented, there’s basically no throwaway details, especially in these early episodes - everything has something to do with the mystery and what’s to come in general.
YES!! Thank you guys for covering my favorite sci-fi show. LET'S GOOOO!!
Omg YES!!! You guys will love this show and I can re-watch it with you 😍
You guys are going to love Amos! Fucking badass!!
Started watching Expanse after the first season aired. Kept up with it each season. You will probably love it. I do. Plus you dont have to wait.
Glad to be on board with you guys again, as I just started watching The Expanse last night. It'll be fun watching your reactions right after my own reacts.
I'm so pumped for the final book its not even funny. These reactions will make the wait a little more bearable. Love you guys.
So glad you guys started this! You're gonna love it!
I'm only halfway through Season 2 of this show but I can already tell... this show is something special.
I'm sure you 2 will thoroughly enjoy it.
Its about mthafkn time!!! Love it!! If u r lost I recommend rewatching however us expanse community will assist u on clarifying things WITHOUT spoiling cuz I am so here for ur theories on wtf just happened :)
Awesome! So glad you guys are reacting to this
They don't have light speed.
They generally wouldn't accelerate at 1G, since Belters mostly wouldn't be able to take it. Standard acceleration for cruise is more like 1/3 G.
Im so pumped you guys are finally doing the expanse ive been waiting sense you guys wrapped up GOT
The Expanse is by far and away the best show running right now.
The books and audiobooks are also really damn good.
Heaps of great characters, tons of intrigue and drama, and top notch action sequences.
The Expanse is everything GoT was, and probably a bit more.
And the fans are second to none, considering they literally kept this show from getting axed.
