yeah... plan will be to start with Witcher and end with Call of Duty
@@NikkiStevenReact Are more game trailer reactions in the pipeline? Would be great to see you react to the Diablo 4 Cinematic Trailer, it's awesome :)
@Mario Zakall
Yeah, just gotta get organized and pick the trailer to watch... Diablo has been recommended to us over on the discord so we are aware of it
@@NikkiStevenReact Ok cool!
Holden doesn't always make the "smart" decision, but he always makes what he believes is the "right" decision. Answering the distress call wasn't smart...but it was the right thing to do. If you don't go repair the antenna, you all die. His broadcast was insurance to make sure Mars didn't just make them disappear. Of those three decisions, two were smart...but all were right.
SPOILER
The good thing is most of the time his gut instinct is correct.
In the rpg party that is the crew, he's the Paladin.
Only thing I'd suggest is replacing "galaxy" with "the Solar System" and you're golden :)
like 80-90% of viewers, you see Holden's decision as bad. I'm in the 10-20% who think that they were legally (and morally) obligated to answer that distress call. If I were stuck in space, I know I'd rather have someone who felt compelled to respond than someone who heard my pleas and ignored them.
The only decision I thought was bad, was wanting to go after the stealth ship, cuz he was just reacting to what happened to the Cant without thinking.
I’m in the percentage that thinks Holdens a little bitch for not owning up to it right away, letting his girl get shit for it. He’s the new XO, it’s not like he doesn’t have the authority to do something about it
i'm not saying i wouldn't make the same decisions but we are just able to make those comments in context to the outcome of his actions. don't think he's a bad dude or anything. -S
@@NikkiStevenReact It feels good to be even half as cool as the best superhero of all time anywhere Captain Hindsight from South Park.
There used to be a law in Alaska that it was illegal to not assist someone road-side (may have changed, this is via my parent’s stories in the 70’s). The theory is that it’s so sparsely populated, they might not see another person to render aid and it could be fatal for them. This seems like that type of situation.
I just want to reiterate how happy I am that you guys are reacting to this show. That is all.
This!
oh glorious early days. "stay a way from de aqua"
I love how this episode Miller wasnt able to finish his shower at first, then does finish his shower at Julies place and at the end gets an unwanted shower by Diego and his water thieves :D
Seth ah Diogo, that little shit 😂
In greywater, no less. The murkiness of the water they doused Miller in implies that it was sourced originally from drains to water the green-space's plants. What's a little shampoo between friends? Plants don't mind. This might easily be the second time Miller has worn this particular water.
how does one guy get all that luck? :P
I'm loving that you guys are getting into the show so quickly. Some people need a few episodes to really get into it but I was hooked from the beginning.
Yeah I remember a lot of people thought things were moving too slow. Not me.
Both the show and the books, gravity almost it's own character. It is really different and cool
Steve really wants to see aliens!!! 😂
Don't we all?
It's always interesting to see how people who haven't read the book series react to the near constant stream of world building in the first season.
You don't actually have to have read this particular book series. Most fiction does the same thing. It just takes being a reader.
Why are you pretending I said someone had to read the books?
@@kirkdarling4120 Other than its more epic, more characters, more world building. I wish they had the budget to do what's in the books but alas Amazon TV isn't gonna pony up $200+ mill per season.
23:12 Only Alex calls him Hoss, which basically means Boss, but its his Texan accent.
Mariner Valley Accent!
I started the series when Nikki&Steven announced it and i gotta say he's one of my favorites!
@@fedemona1 gotta love a Pakistani with a texas drawl ...
@@ericvandet8517 actually he is persian.
@@Martiancamel The Actor - Yes, the character - a Mariner Valley native of Pakistani descent whose accent derives from Texas - Still COOL!
Lol! I love Nikki shutting Steven down about aliens. But hey, it's a big universe out there.
I have adored both of you since your kind, sensitive reactions to Chernobyl. I have a lot of respect for you both and love your reactions! I am really looking forward to you reacting to the rest of the series.
Space
Star Wars: nerfed to the point of being snug
Star Trek: wondrous, for exploring
The Expanse: as much of a threat as the bad guys
Yeeeessss! Nailed it. Space is it's own character in this series.
There are no "bad guys" in The Expanse. Everyone is the hero of their own story......just like real life.
@@jrich749 yeah I know, tried to find another word for it, but couldn't.
but yeah, thats one of the things I love about this show
There is some crossover. The Expanse thinks of space like Bones (in nuTrek). "Space is disease and danger wrapped in darkness and silence."
I've always felt that Bones and Avasarala would have made fast friends.
@@jrich749 I dunno there are a couple out and out bad guys who are only out for themselves
I don't know why, but MARS on this show gets me pumped! Go MCR!
MMC!
@@pendraco2000 MCRN was pretty cool.....I hope they get to show us Laconia.
Mars aeternam!
6:28 This is a common misconcept that the vacuum is sucking the air out of the spaceship, but it actually is the other way around. The pressure of the air inside is pushing outwards against the hull of the ship. When it find a hole in the hull it presses itself into the vacuum of space. Here on earth we have gravity that holds down and pressurizes the air.
This is also the reason why sub marines and space ships use direct opposite styles of design. Sub marines need to keep pressure outside (water pressure trying to get in) while space ships need to keep the pressure inside (pressure trying to get out).
While we are at sub marines, the combat in space is actually closest to sea combat. Battles are fought over vast distances with torpedos and railguns while machine guns with bullets are used as defensive measures to blow up incomming missiles (since we dont have any energy shields to protect us, right? ;D). So since space is so large and vast it would make sense that there would also be pirate space ships roaming it ;)
Simple physics and behaviour of pressure differentials. You also don't get sucked out of airplanes. You get blown out.
They demonstrated that at the iss when it got punctured. You can put your finger on the hole - no problem. Some tape fixed it.
This is not the same movie trope we see everywhere. As you can see they aren't being sucked out of the ship and the can move relatively well (considering they are under thrust). And they do a better job of portraying what would actually happen when the hull gets punctured in the next episode of i remember correctly.
Steven: "I don't even want to know what the threat is"
Look to your right dude.
haha I'm in the 4th season now and I don't think anyone ever mentioned to me that Thomas Jane was The Punisher!
A fan film was made, its like 15 minutes long, starring Jane as The Punisher. Its amazing.......and he was the best Punisher in my mind. Of course I was a fan of the comics in the 80s so I am probably biased. Bernthal was good......but he wasn't Jane.
Amos Burton - the biggest badass in this part of galaxy.
He's so hot tho ahaha
No doubt!
You say its Holden making bad decisions but its really only one decision. Answering the distress call was a moral and legal obligation. And only because of hindsight is it the wrong one. The other decisions have been fairly pragmatic so far.
yeah, i can't say I wouldnt have made the same choices he's making... from our seat, it's easy to say he's making bad choices. -S
@@NikkiStevenReact Law of the sea has traditionally required the same thing - you render aid to any one in need, and for the same reason, you might need the help next time. This is the "moral" choice. And sending a msg before the Martians pick them up - best choice you can make if you think they might have been the ones to ambush you - otherwise -WAY to easy to disappear, you WANT someone to know where you have gone and when if you go into danger...
@@NikkiStevenReact I definitely get it. All the other crew are yelling at him for his decisions and none of them really want to go along with it. Most viewers rightly feel like you did, and I did too first time watching. It really helps to solidify what a morally gray world they are in.
That's who Holden is....and why we love him. There is no middle ground for him....its right or wrong.
I mean, I'd be Holden about the distress call, with no regrets but it bears noting that moral and legal imperatives don't always align with practical and sensible ones.
There was a threat of pirates and the loss of bonuses to consider. The first is a physical threat and -- given the nature of working in space, in this setting -- the second can be more important than simple greed.
So, while I agreed with Holden's decision, I don't agree that it was the only right decision. It was merely the right decision for one value system. And there is more than one valid value system.
I'm behind on the newest season of this show so I'm rewatching with you guys to catch back up lolol
This show is my favorite syfy show right now.
Each season it moved up a spot. I became my 3rd favorite after the first book ended (season 2.5), my 2nd favorite after book 2 (season 3.5), and my favorite after book three (season 3).
Waiting a week between episodes is gonna KILL me
I love how this show goes deep into the politics of Earth, Mars and the Belt while keeping the sci fi as realistic as possible. You are in for a great ride!
Another great reaction....You guys are the BEST distraction.
I wonder who Steven will Bromance in this TV series? I remember his JON SNOWWW! and Ragnar LOTHBROK. I bet it will be a woman this time. CHRISJEN!!!!
Survivors of the Canterbury-
Definitely not the XO - James/Jim Holden
Engineering Officer - Naomi Nagata
Engineering Second - Amos Burton
Pilot - Alex Kamal
Medic - Shed Garvey
Cops on Ceres work for Star Helix and Earth Company -
Detective with the Hat - Josephus Miller
Partner - Dimitri Havelock
Former Partner - Octavia Muss
Commander - Captain Shaddid
One of the great things about this show is that there is very little wasted events or dialogue and things that seem to be throwaway lines will eventually pay off. Even what the kid said who was stealing water is important.
Some hopefully helpful stuff that is fun to know:
So you mention how hard on your body space travel is, and you're very right. Acceleration equal to 1 Earth Gravity (1G) is 9.8 meters per second, per second, that is to say every second, you travel 9.8 meters pers second faster than before. Just to keep it simple, we can round up to 10 m/s^2. So if you go twice that fast, 20m/s^2, someone who weighs 50 kilograms on Earth now weighs 100 kilograms. During the flip-and-burn maneuver on the Canterbury, they would have had to accelerate much faster to overcome all the momentum they had built up while traveling toward Ceres. Let's say it was an 8G maneuver, which is when they bring out the acceleration drugs. So someone who weighs 50 kilos at 1G now weighs 400 kilos, or about 882 pounds. Obviously, they can't maintain this forever, and roundabout 12Gs, you have a very good chance of popping a blood vessel in your brain and dying from a stroke. Any time a ship stops accelerating, the gravity goes away, and you're "on the float." This is why everyone wears the magnetic boots that attach them to the deck. Bear in mind, "stops accelerating" is not the same as "stops moving"! In space, Sir Issac Newton is the baddest ass motherfucker ever to live.
Here on Earth, military fighter pilots have to train to handle G forces of 7 to 9Gs regularly, as the sharp turns and steep climbs their aircraft are capable of can cause a pilot to black out quite easily.
A bit of a personal interest for you guys: In the book, we're told that Julie Mao is a brown belt in zero-G jiu jitsu, which is how she handled the guy who got too personal.
Every time I see a shared breathing scene in any movie now I always flashback to the one here with Alex. The stakes in this show rise from episode to episode, to me..best space sci-fi since Battlestar. Can't wait for season 5.
I liked the quality right from the start, but it took me about 4-5 episodes to really get sucked in. Now it's my favorite sci-fi show. I really need to rewatch now that I have a different relationship with the characters.
I'm on edge waiting for you two to get to the later seasons. Season 1 is solid, but the seasons just get progressively better
Just came here to say this. If they love the first few episodes, they'll really love the rest of the show. The bginning is not bad, but it becomes so good once the story progresses further
"I wonder what Martians look like..." "I mean, we haven't met one yet"... LOL. Psst... he's standing right there. :)
Totally unrelated, but i have drown twice. Once when i was 8, the other i was 13ish. Both i got saved. But honestly, drowning doesnt hurt that much. Its not physical pain like being burnt, or your bones breaking. Its more the feeling of eating wayyy to much food. And you blackout after a few seconds. I would actually prefer to drown or sufforcate then to be burnt alive or be in a huge crash. Etc. Drowning isnt painful, its just really uncomfortable.
holy shit!!!! that is crazy. Glad you are here with us!!!!
It's really funny that Steven was wearing a Jon Snow shirt, because Holden is kind of a space-Jon Snow. 😂
I disagree on Holden making wrong decisions all the time, thus far at least.
Helping people in trouble is a humane thing to, it's especially strange to see you critisize someone for that.
Recording message was a smart tactical move, at least at their position, it's insurance.
Fixing comms is a pratical solution, the other was to just die.
Yes, trying to go after the martians wasn't smart, but it's kinda understandable, his girlfriend got killed.
I can't wait for you to meet bobby.
From a logical standpoint, Holden was acting irrationally there. He saw his gf get blown up and is just purely acting out of revenge. Going after them for what? They showed they had ships that can fire nukes, so it's clearly a military type vehicle, while they are flying the equivalent of a pick up truck with no weapons on the ship or on them. So yeah, going after them would have been the dumbest move.
Lol why would the martians be anything other than humans that moved there from Earth, there are no native life on Mars now so why would there be in the future :D
14:19 Russian components. American components. ALL MADE IN TAIWAN!!!
I am not gas station. This is sophisticated laboratory.
Loving the reactions, Holden can react at times without thinking, but I don’t think every decision is always bad, he didn’t know the distress message was a trap and they needed to fix their equipment to send their own distress signal or be possibly be stuck floating around and end up dying. A bit of bad luck it got picked up by mars first. Anyways loving how much you guys are enjoying it so far.
So glad you guys doing The Expanse now - can't wait for next week. By the way those damn cliffhangers were the reason why I binged the show.
Oh man, if you thought that was intense, get ready. This show is just barely starting to ramp up.
especially next episode.
"Oh my sweet summer child."
This one of the, if not the greatest, sci-fi shows ever made. You're in for a ride if you continue this show through all the current seasons.
24:44 Yeah, Ceres (pronounced like "series") is running low on water and the Canterbury was an ice hawler that was bringing ice from Saturn's rings to Ceres station. I wonder how the people on Ceres are going to react when the water the Cant was bringing doesn't get there.
Love that you guys are into this show! I also love how the science is as accurate as possible. Seeing the birds flap their wings and float was cool! Makes you think twice about when we see aliens displayed in water tanks...maybe not for display but to simulate 0 G... Humans colonized the solar system. From earth to lunar cities to military compounds on Mars. To the asteroid belt in between mars and Jupiter for resources, Ceres being the largest asteroid in the belt. All 3 factions wanting to gain power over the other.
😄 Kirimvose for the distraction! Yes the circumstances are worrying (here in Germany) but if it comes to a 'lock down' a man is prepared. Food, water, hygiene essencial etc.
Stay safe&healthy and keep enjoying how this show does expanse before your eyes! 🧐👍
So glad you guys are getting into this. When you said you were watching THE EXPANSE, I was worried it was the home movies of my waistline during the holidays, but I'm thrilled it's this. I think you're going to love it!
im sure you gonna love Avasarala she one of the best characters in the show :)
Chrisjen is the GOAT!
I'd recommend watching with subtitles if you don't mind them much. There's a lot of world building and names etc, itll make it easier on you to keep track.
I remember hating Amos in this episode!
One thing that's interesting to me about this show is how applicable some the lessons are to us right now. You can see some parallels in how the these factions interact and make political moves. It's interesting to think no matter how things change the humans stay the same in many ways.
There's a lot of "world bulding" in this season. Every episode increases understanding of the Sol system. The Earth, Mars, Belter social-economic-political situation is part of the world building. Paying some attention to this now helps with later storylines and characters. I feel like Episode 6 is when the stories finally came together and world building kind of stopped being front and center. Such good stuff!
You guys need to watch "The Worlds of the Expanse" on the Alt Shift X channel. It gives a GREAT overview of the different factions (Earth, Mars, Belt), their history, and the technologies at play, and it does so WITHOUT SPOILERS. Seriously, check it out.
There's a spoiler within the first few seconds of that video, even though the title says it's spoiler-free.
On the other hand, *An Overview of The Expanse I Overview Pilot* is more spoiler-free. However, I still think it's better when the reactors to go in blind.
2 Episodes of The Expanse per week, please and thanks!
Sleep is so overrated.
sorry, that's not happening till the walking dead is over
I just want to thank you guys for your enternainment. I live in the north-east of Italy, the situation is very critic right now. We need to stay at home and be responsible. In this modern world, there's no borders, we are all human beings and we need to stay together. Hope you are all safe around the world. We won't lose this battle, no matter what.
All of the water dumped from that barrel would be recovered in the air recyclers. Every molecule. But a barrel full of water is evidence. That much stolen water would probably get them executed. Think of it like a drug dealer flushing their stash when the cops kick the door in.
So glad you guys are getting to enjoy this fantastic series; Thanks for taking the time and effort to watch/edit/post your enjoyment!
Wow, another great reaction. You guys are really paying attention, which is crucial for this show and is the reason you don’t feel lost. That is going to pay off big time. See you next week!
How are you not binge watching? LOL, Love you guys, keep em coming.
This show pulls NO punches and I love it. Also, stay safe, Nikki & Steven. Y'all are fam.
Yesss, after I watch the first Ep with you guys I went and binged watch all of Season 1 and im halfway through season 2 hahahaha. You guys are going to love it. Love you guys!!!
Shed is a fucking hero.
FYI, Martians in the book all have a cowboy/southern drawl (like Alex). I think, from the original folks that were part of the original Martian terraforming group that started the whole martian settlement. Sorry Steve, not little green guys - maybe big green chili peppers. lol
Not all. Some, as we learn, were Polynesian stock, so just a section had thd Texan heritage.
When in doubt... kick it...
Forget star wars this show is a lot more like house of cards or Homeland or game of thrones!!!!
Stay grounded in the human condition and this show will give you all you can handle!!!
i did say it's not star wars!! i'm keeping my expectations wide open -S
GREAT comment Shirley!!! That is why so many people love it. Space is a backdrop. Politics and humanity; power; heart and struggle. It's a character study, space and technology are simply just the back of the stage. If you make our group The North. Earth Kings Landing. And Belters The Wall. LOL you get the picture. It was never about dragons. But power. Anyways. You know what I mean.
Just watched your S1:E1 of The Expanse...thinking you had JUST dropped it...today. We feel stupid. Don't know why we missed this reaction. Love this show...now we can binge it with you. Thanks.
Yikes! Dont think this is the show to keep your mind off our current crisis.
Christopher Miller 😂
Hoping you guys one day open to starting doctor who, beloved show by many :D
You guys are seriously going to need a new T shirt: MCRN (Mars Congressional Republic Navy). In stylish black wit the MCRN Logo. Jump in, the water's deep. Besides, Ragnar's distracting me.
Starting watching your series in month 17 of COVID. Kind of nifty to realize you started this watchthrough right at the start of it, so I'll get to re-live the pandemic while I'm re-living the Expanse!
Not that there's annnything pandemic-y about any part of the Expanse story...
It's hard to depict in a TV show, but yeah Martians are supposed to be somewhat taller and thinner in general because they live in 1/3 the gravity of Earth, and Belters are taller and thinner still because they live in *at most* 1/3 G (like the inhabitants of Ceres, which gets its "gravity" by rotation) but many spend a good portion of their lives in weightlessness. The moons of Jupiter and Saturn are also inhabited, and there are science outposts on some moons of Uranus and Neptune although there is no permanent population in those areas.
this whole series is an excellent example of a series of books that built an amazing universe, a tv series that built incredible right on top of it, and if you liked it that far, you're bound to like the rest of the series :)
It only gets better.
T. Jane's Boogie Nights character was great too.
Yo, humanity hasn't made it to the nearest star (probably never will), let alone form a galaxy-spanning civilization, so all these humans are in the (mostly inner) solar system. For reference, the nearest star (which likely has no human-habitable world, let alone one with alien life, intelligent or otherwise) is >7000x farther than pluto... and Darth Vader had a super star destroyer named the Executor. This is a great show, glad you're watching it!
Great reaction. Where do you get water if you live in space? This is what the Canterbury was doing it was an ice hauler ( collecting frozen water in space) but now it's destroyed so Ceres station ( this is the belters main home and trading centre) is short of water. Remember what the captain of the Canterbury said about they might lose their on-time bonuses!. In space water is more precious than gold. Keep the reactions coming. The show just keeps getting better. :)
Just started watching, but you’ve already keyed in on a recurring theme. They might as well just have a permanent subtitle: “The Expanse: Space is Terrifying.”
Spoiler alert! All Martians look and think like Marvin the Martian from classic Looney Tunes, and want to blow up the Earth for blocking their view of Venus. I mean, fair play to them right?
All of the non-artificial locations in the show are real places in the Solar System. Ceres is a real dwarf planet like Pluto, and the largest object in the asteroid belt. It's actual gravity is very low, but you may have noticed in the first episode that the surface of the station appears to be the floor when you get inside. In the series many of the asteroids have been "spun up" to create artificial outward gravity. The show never get into specifics, but for extra info Ceres spins fast enough to simulate Mars gravity, which is roughly 1/3 Earth's. Not all Belters have this luxury though, which is why many of them have growth problems.
I know you guys don’t typically react to movies but can you guys PLEASEEEEEEEEE find a way to react to uncut gems
The Belters are tall and skinny with bone density issues because of zero G. Mars' gravity is 40% of Earth's and is enough to let bones develop properly. They'd be pale from less sunlight, but that's about the only difference. These are your great great great grandkids, shits not going to get too crazy.
2:33 Not galaxy, solar system. This isn't Star Wars or Star Trek as you just said. Humans only colonized the solar system - everything else is too far out.
And By the way the show is limited to our Solar System so talk about characters from other parts of the galaxy is inaccurate. I don't think light speed travel is even a thing in this show. But they do have the technology to accelerate to very high speeds which is why you see them putting in the mouth guard and injecting this champagne colored fluid. I think the rapid acceleration produces dangerously strong g-forces so the liquid probably serves to reinforce their body organs and/or blood vessels so that they don't get crushed under the insanely strong g-forces produced when accelerating to high speeds.
James Holden and Amos Burton are both from Earth. Alex Khamal is a Martian (from Mariner Valley). Naomi Nagata is a Belter.
Ugh. Amos is the shit. So simple and easy going. Don’t fuck w me and I won’t fuck with you. Unless Naomi says, hahaha
Little correction, the ships that fired the missiles at the Canterbury had the stealth tech, Earth doesn't have it, nor does the Belt, hence why Avasarala called it "the holy grail" and why Earth and the main crew suspect Mars as the main culprit
You guys should watch Kingdom on Netflix!!!!
Martians are just humans that have colonized Mars. You also have met a Martian already. Alex is a Martian.
Holden makes a lot of stupid decisions early on. He has a valiant boy scout tendency to want to try to fix things and make everything right. It's kind of annoying but also endearing when he gets a little smarter about it.
19:20 We've only seen humans so far and they went further than Mars, across the solar system! Mars just means people who colonized Mars and the colony has become indipendent.
It's funny watching people get so worked up about Shed, knowing what's going to happen to him in a couple more episodes.
Holden is a pretty decent guy in general, but he tends to act impulsively and not think things through, like when he decoded and logged the distress call. Doing so landed him and his coworkers in this predicament. Now he's got his blood up, and wants to chase down the gunship that blew up the Cant, so that they can...do what? Read the bad guys a sternly-worded letter from the Pur-&-Kleen ice mining corporation? They're in a short-range shuttle with no weapons. (A damaged one, at that.) Vengeance isn't their top priority right now.
The Canterbury survivors are in an unarmed shuttle. The Bad Guys already demonstrated they have nuclear space torpedoes. So no, not even remotely a good idea to follow them.
At this point I didn't really like any characters except Miller. I was more interested in the world but they grow on you
And watch Black Sails!!
Absolutley love watching your reaction videos and really happy you've started "The Expanse". Might I suggest a future series down the road when this one is caught up..? "Fargo" the tv series if it's not already been suggested or.on your radar. You'll not be disappointed 😉
I believe Nikki is right, the show is based on science so there's no reason to postulate Alien life forms like those from our Sci Fi classics.
Steven did say "if you believe aliens exist." Because there is no scientific evidence of extraterrestrial beings, people choose to believe based on a feeling.
If you guys wathed movies aswell THAT IS 🔥🔥 theres a lot of cool movies to watch Just saying
They just fired 4 Nukes and destroyed the Canterbury and you are in an unarmed short range shuttle.....
Good show
The Belters can be considered in the same way as the different Nations of Native Americans. To the people of Earth or Mars, they are seen as a single polity rather than a collective of mostly independent tribal/familial units.
Of course you've already met a Martian. Alex Khamal (the pilot) is from Mars.
