I had nearly 7 years of debilitating symptoms starting at 48/49 yrs of age. I was told repeatedly and categorically that hormonal changes due to my age was not something that would be considered until my periods had stopped for at least 12 months. I was given antidepressants and I saw on my notes that the GP had typed GAD (which I’ve never been checked for. I had to give up working (self employed) due to regular terrible migraines, feeling unwell, debilitating fatigue etc. Not understanding why I was feeling that way made it feel 10x worse. I didn’t know what to make of it, or know how to explain to family and friends why I wasn’t living a ‘normal’ life anymore. I eventually persuaded a GP, after 7 yrs of struggling, at age 55 to let me try HRT. I was so grateful, but she prescribed it in a way that wasn’t suitable for me , so after another year of struggle I made an appointment with Newson’s, and it has turned everything around for me. The relief of being understood and treated with respect was huge, I wasn’t treated like it was all in my head, and while she recognised the mental health impacts that the peri/menopause can have, she didn’t treat it as a mental health issue. The Dr I spoke to was knowledgeable, confident and supportive and I felt I was in safe hands. I am so grateful for the work these Doctors do and only wish that women like myself hadn’t needlessly suffered for so long because of misinformation and outdated attitudes. Putting free content out there for anyone to access is so helpful and could make all the difference to someone who is struggling to understand why she is feeling so terrible. Bravo to you all.

I am one of those women having the debilitating symptoms , very been prescribed antidepressants and told that because my mom died from breast cancer its not the best choice for me but everyone tells me I need to try it. My quality of life is reduced significantly. I think I'll have to make up my mind and take it.

Thank you I am 59 and have suffered with menopause for 8 years after being told by my doctor about 4 years ago “ he wouldn’t prescribe it for his wife “ because of the risks I went away thinking I would battle on. After watching Liz Earle & yourself I have a Telephone appointment on Friday with my new gp and feel a lot more prepared after listening to you.

Thank you Louise, great name. My menopause started naturally at 44, I am now 57, I have been retired from work on ill health as my symptoms were unbearable, pain and mental health being the dominant ones. 3 weeks ago I asked the practice nurse if she would prescribe HRT as the GP refused, he had me on SNRIs, SRRIs and clomazepam. These have not helped much. But after one day of the oestrogen Gel my pain reduced, and my motivation changed. I have just listened to this podcast and now know I need to work out the right dose for me. Thank you for your support you need a CBE or at least and MBE!!!

Totally agree.!!! I have the experience with my menopausal doctor who happens to be a male. I only say that because I feels he wants to shut me up whenever I assert myself and question him. I research alot about HRT and when I bring this information to him he says they don't know anything!! As if he was the be all and end all on all menopausal knowledge. Wondering if this is a common occurrence for most women. Best of luck to you all in your menopausal journey.🙏❤

I was getting hot flushes, night sweats, very low mood, anxiety, brain fog, irritated, angry, sensitive and tearful. GP wasn't that helpful and i don't think they are trained enough. I've had video consultations and blood tests at Dr Louise Newsons clinic. The whole team have been very helpful, supportive and Dr Louuse Newson has changed my life. I've been on Hrt gel for andMirena coi for over a year and testosterone for over 6 months. I feel so much better. Thank you so much to Louise Newson and team. You are doing a fantastic job. Thank you so much, I have avoided HRT due to the breast cancer theory but after watching this I am reconsidering HRT lack of good sleep and a massive weight gain. Dieting/heal thing eating and still no weight loss. Before the menopause the weight would come off with the same eating regime. Not being able to lose the weight now is impacting my mental health.

Hi Carole, I had a real problem with weight loss (and type 2 diabetes) until I found the ketogenic way of eating. It took a year and my weight loss was slow compared to younger people (i'm 68) But eating low carb was the thing that got me back to a healthy weight. I still have belly fat though and hope If i can get on HRT, I will be able to lose that.

Thank you, this information it is very reassuring. After 3 year of sleeping 3/4 hrs per night and all the symptoms associated with sleep deprivation, I sought out a female Dr who prescribed HRT, but then she wanted to discontinue it after 5 years as recommended here in Canada. I really had to self advocate to continue and I was very nervous to do so, but getting off HRT meant me taking many medications to manage symptoms and it just didn't make sense. I went off HRT for 3 months and the symptoms were so easy to recognize, especially now that I knew what to look for; anxiety, depression, brain fog, loss of energy, hair loss, skin elasticity, weight gain. I read Dr Lisa Marconi"s book and it really gave me the courage to self advocate and your discussion here has only strengthened my resolve. So thank you again for advocating for women :)

In Florida and I have already asked my GP for HRT because I have insomnia and weight gain at age 75. She told me I was too old to start (although I had it in my 50’s) and told me to go to a gynecologist and ask them. I couldn’t get an appointment for two months to see the gynecologist so I’m doing a lot of research in the meantime. Thanks again for your encouragement.

Hello! You are so inspiring. I’m 63 yo on menopause about 11 or 12 yrs my gynecologist from Kaiser insurance in California stopped HRT due to VERY RECENT studies that women over 10 yrs or more on menopause have a higher risk of heart attack or strokes. I am so disappointed and dismayed. I realize your video is 2yrs old so I have hopes my gynecologist is not accurate 🙏🏼

Thanks for a very informative video! I'm 74, quit having periods at age 38, and the only HRT available at that time was Premarin, to which I objected on moral grounds. Only found out last week about natural hormones currently available in the US and covered by insurance! Now I just need to find out if I'm too old and broken-down to benefit from estrogen, but there's probably no way to know without giving it a go. I have every imaginable symptom, with the exception of hot flashes and night sweats. Have an appointment with an endocrinologist next month, and I'm crossing my fingers. Again, thank you for helping us all.

Dear Louise, thank you so much for the explanation. 💖We need you to finally get our freedom back! Its really hard to understand why at the XXI century with the marvelous discoveries in medicine the most common problem is not solved yet. HRT should be sold over the counter and knowledge about it well spread. Its high time to shamelessly rise our voice. We are not getting elderly ladies- we are getting second lives!

Women had HRT, then thanks to the alarming study in the USA by WHI, fear of breast cancer brought HRT to a full stop. Dr's stopped prescribing it, or limited it to very short term use.
Half the world's population will spend 30 or 40 years in hormonal distress, and needlessly, especially as there are alternatives to the older HRT.
Men: 'I have a problem', boom, Viagara. (which, initially was a BP med, if I recall) I wish women's issues would be taken as seriously, after all, it's to the benefit of everyone.

Very nervous about trying HRT in case it reactivates the endo that destroyed 30 years of quality of life.

I Have Factor V Leiden Heterozygous, my primary just laughed at thought of giving me anything but Paoxetin. I gained 20 pounds on that. Then I finally found a BHRT specialist. And I’m so happy with the decision. Life changing. The consult was $120 and meds are about $40 a month. I will test hormones n a couple of months , might cost all of $50. This has been worth so much more to me. No bad side effects so far

Love your videos 👏🏽 I’m 37 and went into full menopause 4 years ☹️ (after removing an ovary, the one left just stopped working). I have had very little support whilst going through this 😭 I have been on HRT for about 3 years now, but keep having to change it as it starts to Plato 😑 I had all the symptoms of menopause, palpitations, itchy skin, anxiety, stress, hot flushes, night sweats, moot swings, headaches, unable to empty my bladder, joint pains, bowl problems, dry skin, dizzy spells and strangely my nails look like they were dying

The biggest struggle I currently have is finding a Dr. who actually LISTENS and wants to do what's best for the patient. I find myself at an angry place at this time. In the US you wait months to see a Dr. and perhaps, like myself, you are suffering with a painful autoimmune problem. You finally get to your Drs office and explain the problem, and they just shuffle you back out through the doof without any help at all or refer you to someone else - bc that's not their "area". So we again wait months to see someone else and the process just repeats - it has left me feeling hopeless. I do take/use Estradiol cream and that has made a big difference in my vaginal health. However, I have been suffering with Lichen Sclerosus for over a year and it seems Drs simply do not do well with diagnoses and treatment. I strongly feel any woman who presents with pain, and intense itch should be evaluated for LS - because it gets worse and destroys your life.

Thank you for your video on HRT I was on it initially, then the doctor recommended that I have a break from it, eb=ve]n though there were no problems, was put on levothyroxine which made me sick until I got off it myself. Now after much suffering, I will go back to HRT, as the doctors refuse to give me Armour T3 thyroid.

I take the internal estrogen for a couple reasons. One is I swim. Most use the patch here in the US. There is a patch with both estrogen and progesterone. The other reason is I recall while reading various studies that the internal estrogen has a more protective benefit against one of the major killers. I cant recall if its heart disease, diabetes, osteoperosis, or dementia, but one of them.

Estrogen is not necessarily necessary during perimenopause and if taken should only be taken at times when estrogen is reduced by the body due to perimenopause. Perimenopause is not necessarily an estrogen deficiency problem...rather...an estrogen declining (at times) problem. It's very bio individual and not cut and dry.

Hi Dr. Newson! I am a 36 years old woman with fibroids and adenomyosis. I have made a lot of changes in my diet and lifestyle in the last several years, but I got this problem. The last thing I could this of stopping was dairy and sugar (the only sugar I was consuming was a little bit of coconut sugar in my organic coffee). Despite this after a surgery for removal of the fibroids, I got two new fibroids only a few months later which was too early... My period is coming on the 17th day in the last several months (so I do not ovulate), I have been bleeding outside of it as well. Obviously I need natural progesterone to regulate the period and prevent the thickening of my uterus. The issue is that the fibroids have a lot of receptors both for estrogen and progesterone. I am estrogen dominant and I take supplements to fix it. But the ratio compared to my progesterone is 54:1. I do not want to make the fibroids grow from the progesterone. Should I not take it at all or is there a safe small dose that will help without doing a harm? I will be grateful for your reply, because many books and studies have contrary statements. Thank you!

GP's are not studying this field and totally misunderstand the 2001 W.H.I. study and our Brest check clinic even referenced it without qualifying the studies that have been made since.. so much for the medical field to catch up on.

I’ve always been told NO to HRT because my mom had a estrogen positive breast cancer when she was in her 60’s and at the time, she was taking the synthetic estrogen. I’m 49 (about to be 50 this month) and have been suffering miserably for a few years. I could deal with the hot flashes but the brain fog (to put it mildly) and anxiety is killing me. I’m not willing to put up with it anymore and after listening to your videos, I’m seeing my pcp tomorrow and ask if for body identical HRT! I see my OBGYN later this month but at least want to get started on an estrogen patch ASAP!

I have to disagree with not giving progesterone only during estrogen dominance. I suffered from estrogen dominance leading up to menopause. Progesterone only was prescribed to balance the high estrogen levels. Had additional estrogen been prescribed, it would have made my already severe estrogen dominance symptoms even worse.

Hi Julie, thank you for your message. Dr Newson says that many women need their HRT treatment regime altered over time. You may need a higher dose; you may need to try a different way of taking the hormone or need to try a different brand. You may find it helpful to go back to your healthcare professional or speak to a doctor that specialises in the menopause. Here is a fact sheet created by Dr Newson that many answer some of your questions: bit.ly/31qmeT3
      Best wishes.
