The late great Karen Carpenter with that fantastic voice. Unlike today's so-called "singers", who all try to out-scream each other, Karen's wonderfully mellow tones could beat them all.
How the music world is poorer without her. R.I.P Karen ❤

Steve, the singers now go thru a computer that auto-corrects the defects they have. We aren't really hearing them.

@@TheBandit7613those are the pop acts. there are plenty of musicians who perform without auto tune
you just never heard of them because its not your generation, and that's ok
everyone thinks their generation is the best, the one before is overrated, and the one after is garbage
its a cycle that repeats over and over. its not unique.

@@robertcarlsonrobert5846 I was 20 (1981) when an article appeared in the Boston Globe. Mass General had identified this eating disorder that had become rampant among girls...and they had opened a clinic. My college roommate was skin and bones; ate and binged - (would run the shower to cover the sound of her retching) and took laxatives and diet pills. She was obsessed with food in a way that was abnormal. Could devour a doz donuts in a couple of hours and puke them up. People stared at her in public. Our other roommate and I read the article in silence and shock. It took a couple of years, but she was treated at MGH and recovered.

Her death brought this eating disorder into the spotlight and may have saved many lives in doing so. She will never be forgotten. Her voice, as evidenced here by this live performance was truly spectacular. Rest well, dear Karen. Gone, but most certainly not forgotten. As a footnote, Karen was just 27 when this was filmed. "Ya get one shot at it", says Karen, with a slight chuckle...knowing she almost never needed more than that. Superstar, which they perform here, is a prime example. The lead vocal on Carpenters' hit single recording of that Leon Russell classic is not just a first take, but the first time Karen ever sang the song. She was a marvel...
Davidson's offhand remark about "the rest of their lives" is unintentionally mordant, isn't it.

Also, with this Tonight Show appearance being from 1978, Richard will have been having medical trouble of his own, having become hooked on painkillers following minor surgery. He would take most of 1979 off, and that year Karen would record her abortive solo album. Richard, to his great credit, kicked the addiction that was menacing him, but Carpenters would never again be the juggernaut they were in the early 70s...

Richard was high as a kite here! It was actually kind of nice to hear him be quiet and let Karen do the talking! He used to cut her off a lot and talk over her in interviews! I feel she really shines here and you can see her true spirit! 💕

Her voice was so perfect! I have kinda giggle at the enormous drum set the drummer is playing for such light music. He's set up more for a Rush concert...LOL! Miss Karen.

Karen looked very healthy in this clip. She sounded happy and very confident. It’s hard to imagine she got so sick and in 4-5 years she would be gone. Such a beautiful voice!

highly recommend the book "Little Girl Blue", sad but great insight into her life. Her mom was a monster, and her "husband" was a POS. Super sad, she was such an angel beyond just that incredible voice.

Karen Carpenter was so uniquely cool and she just never knew it. So sad she compared herself to so many others that she could not take good care of herself! She was above them all. Hope she is in Heaven feeling loved.

In ‘75, a poll published in Playboy, of the greatest drummers of all time, had Karen ranked at #5 & John Bonham at #6. Comparing the two, is apples & oranges. Two different genres(rock vs jazz), could Karen play drums on Stairway To Heaven…. Absolutely, & she could sing lead while playing(most drummers can’t do both & Karen did both exceptionally well). Not taking anything away from Bonzo, who deservingly, will be remembered as one of the greatest drummers ever. Karen was removed from her passion(drums)because of her voice, which will be remembered as one of the greatest voices ever. From a musical perspective, there might be a few in this world that could match Karen’s total package, but in my opinion, John Bonham isn’t one of those few!
