They really were a nice team together. What might have been.... Karen would have made a fantastic Jazz singer. Paula Cole came out of that world... Karen could have gone into it.
Not likely. That's not Karen's skillset, training, experience, apparent interest, and doesn't play to her obvious talents that we know so well: melancholy, harmony, duet singing, extremely precise pitch control, intimacy, warmth, velvet, etc. Also the reason Carpenters are pop is because they were jazz and it didn't sell. Jazz is an art form whose heyday was over by 1960. She was obviously extremely talented so it would be within her character to do well anything she tried, but a jazz singer in the style of Ella or Mel Torme or Al Jarreau is unlikely.
@@TheLarryBrown "That's not Karen's skillset, training, experience, apparent interest, and doesn't play to her obvious talents that we know so well: melancholy, harmony, duet singing, extremely precise pitch control, intimacy, warmth, velvet, etc.." She didn't need to be Ella, Mel or Al. She was Karen.
Karen is full of joy, spirit love and that smile is so warm. I just don't understand why none or maybe why her family didn't saw her illness as a serious problem during those years....did they take her to the hospital for treatment? What she need i guess during those time is a long and personal medications, caring and treatment which her family failed to do. I was born in mid 90's but i read a lot about her health problems and her depression i guess. If she was only takin' care by her family very well then perhaps she's still with us, and still singing with us with that majestic, magical, fairytale voice of an angel.
GamerGalUK - according to her psychologist, the leading expert in anorexia, not one of them participated in family therapy or even made one call to inquire about her. I just listened to an interview where he said that
Divas Live There was zero knowledge or awareness eating disorders back then. My grandmother actually had anorexia and nobody knew what it was. She used to call somebody into the kitchen at Thanksgiving to taste the gravy to see if it needed salt plus she abused laxatives. Everybody was always on diets back then.
I've been watching a lot of documentaries about the Carpenters and it was interesting to see the family dynamics coming into play when they both walk out from behind the curtain, Karen, respectfully bows to the audience and Richard, pretty much pushes her out of the way.
I think he just wasn’t anticipating her bow, got caught up when she did and held her back instead of dashing in front of her. The anxiousness shows though I agree.
That's not what happened and it's really mean-spirited of you to make such an accusation. Richard was looking up at the audience and didn't see her bow. When he bumped into her he reached out to grab onto and steady her. Then ushered her forward.
My dream was that Karen Carpenter and Stive Martin were married and she had many children, but she should be strong to face the whole family and especially her brother. Singing yes, but her will and the songs she wanted. Because she suffered too much! And Stive had everything to make her happy, she did not have an attitude that would make her trust that he really wanted her, facing the whole family, especially Richard. Maybe today she would still be alive!
You can see how bugged Richard was that Karen took the lead seat. Karen had such a natural personality and humor and Richard did not, and you can actually see him trying to compete.
He's not jealous. He knew they were a team, as did she. He knew he wasn't a great lead singer, that's why after the first record his leads were few. That's gracious on his part. He also knows and accepts that she's good on camera (better than him), she's funny and he's serious, and people think of her as the leader because she's the lead singer and they want to hear her talk. That's why she's in the lead seat here and he's very respectful to her, not talking over her, not ignoring what she says, not contradicting or correcting her. He knew she did what she did, and he does what he does, and together they were a smash. Both of them knew that and accepted that, He's just passionate about what he does and even if he were only half the act he's got a right to enjoy the limelight and speak his mind. Because she died and because she's the lead singer people want to focus all the attention on her and expect him to just shut up, which is what I think his naysayers should do.
I can't imagine Karen Carpenter's golden voice ever "cracking," even if she is human. lol I was SO nuts about Karen and had every album and 45 record the Carpenter's made, along w/ a life-sized poster of them on my wall, that I carefully doctored up to place an image of ME in place of John, next to her. Such are the fantasies of a teenage boy, that still sees music as the world's best form of communication, this side of Mathematics.
If only loved herself for how she looked back before she started this horrible ordeal starving herself Karen was a beautiful lady inside n out n oh boy her voice was like a angel singing in heaven miss u Karen xx
I agree. I was not a fan of those cheezy 60s pop tunes like Da Doo Run Run etc. that seemed to be Richard's indulgence. They sounded dated and did not do Karen's voice justice.

I think Karen wore this suit with a different blouse in the Hal Langdon photo shoot. I wish someone would re-master these old video clips and release them on DVD
I don't think the Bach experiment works, they tried but it sounds like Richard is trying to play over Karen. Not sure I get why these two pieces in particular were chosen.
Sadly Richard never got the memo that no one came to see him. He over played the piano on this performance but we really only wanted to hear your sister sing. He should have taken better care of his baby sister.
I haven't read their biography but I know that Karen's illness was very complex and very difficult to treat. Maybe everyone should give Richard the benefit of the doubt. I have had family members and friends with similar illnesses and it can be such a helpless feeling to watch someone you love suffer and not be able to do anything.
I disagree. He was notoriously hard to live with, according to Victoria Tennant. He has depressive issues and a short fuse. According to Richard E Grant he had little patience for Rachel Ward & Bryan Brown's kids when they came to his house. He's a nice enough guy, & he's hella funny, but by all accounts he isn't very sympathetic to others with mental illnesses or weaknesses of any kind.
Not being easy to get along, "hard to live with" with or unsympathetic is vastly different than physical and mental cruelty. Karen Carpenter was terrified of Thomas Burris. Thomas Burris, Karen's husband, borrowed 35 to 40 thousand dollars from Karen at a time, leaving her broke. Friends such as Olivia Newton John knew Karen Carpenter was frightened of Burris. Karen's best friend Karen Kamon stated that this was what broke the camel's back and killed her. Steve Martin maybe acts like a jerk but this is a far cry from someone who is an active abuser. Apples and oranges.
I have been a great fan of these two since I was a teenager but this arrangement of Richard's is almost unbearable to listen to. Karen was quite the trooper to go along with it.
+J Dale I always felt he was a frustrated show off and would have been better suited to concert pianist performances. I am not denying his talent in arranging 'her' songs though....and whatever else he 'did' for their records. She always had to turn her light off and defer to him. She KNEW that she had to shine on her own. No one let her and she trusted their bad advice.
This was painful to listen to and not because of mega talent Karen. How I wish Karen had had the guts to to tell him to go jump off a cliff when he wanted to do crap like this.
Simply the most beautiful voice ever.

@@TheLarryBrown "That's not Karen's skillset, training, experience, apparent interest, and doesn't play to her obvious talents that we know so well: melancholy, harmony, duet singing, extremely precise pitch control, intimacy, warmth, velvet, etc.."
She didn't need to be Ella, Mel or Al. She was Karen.
Steve Martin should have had his own show
Karen is full of joy, spirit love and that smile is so warm.
Divas Live Read "Little Girl Blue".
Divas Live, so wonderful young people like you appreciating Karen's wonderful voice
Anorexia Nervosa wasn't really known back then. They knew something was wrong but they didn't know what it was..
She was beautiful.
One year later, in 1978, would be the last time they performed together in public in the US. So sad.
EVERYONE loved Karen!
Beautiful voice!
I love you Karen ❤️
I remember watching this with my mother late that night on the Tonight Show.
Applause from Brazil!
the conversation is so wholesome compared to today's talks..i love the whole time- the good ole days.
I love you Karen!
I've been watching a lot of documentaries about the Carpenters and it was interesting to see the family dynamics coming into play when they both walk out from behind the curtain, Karen, respectfully bows to the audience and Richard, pretty much pushes her out of the way.
Yep. I saw that too.
Ready I missed that.
The jealousy is sad. But Karen was the one with the personality.
My prayer tonight is that I be as spiritually beautiful as this woman, Karen Carpenter
The best!
DJ was must've been really up on the Carpenters. "So tell me, Karen. Where did you meet Richard?" OMG! I nearly died laughing.
Such a great clip, but I want to hear the rest of the story about Karen's vocal mistake, which never happened in public, I am sure. Great upload!
Karen used to date Steve Martin
Wow 11 shows in one night! That's just insane!
If only loved herself for how she looked back before she started this horrible ordeal starving herself Karen was a beautiful lady inside n out n oh boy her voice was like a angel singing in heaven miss u Karen xx
She was 83 lbs. during this interview, back when society minded their own business about people's personal life. I miss her 😢
Tres maravilhosos! Steven martin e Carpenters 😍😍😍
9:07 look at how they look at each other
I love Karen....
Could you imagine Karen doing an album of standards? It would have been amazing.
I agree. I was not a fan of those cheezy 60s pop tunes like Da Doo Run Run etc. that seemed to be Richard's indulgence. They sounded dated and did not do Karen's voice justice.
Steve Martin was such a lucky guy to have dated Karen I always wish I could have dated her and I wish I still could date her and have married her.
She dated Steve Martin??? You mean she did have such bad taste? OMG!
renarga u kiddin? He was a BOSS at the time.
And vice versa 😍
Karen is such a dish. Steve is... Steve.
They pull out this obscure non-hit stuff. Sne is... She is... Wow.
I just finished reading a 2-inch biography book about The Carpenters. R.I.P. Karen.
what book title?
@@bergZig he's trying to be funny
How on earth did she sing to that torturous prelude rattling away with no relevance to her vocal. And she was dead on.
Wow! Richard took a Bach Prelude and Fugue and worked magic! What a genius!
Deveria ser legendado em português!!!!!
Look at all these four....
Was this the year Johnny started his 3 day work week? so many guest host.
Karen was great, her mom favored Richard. Withholding approval from mom triggered Karen's addiction and she died young.
Does anyone have this video in a better quality?
Bello...bellisimo !!
The guy's hair XD
Karen's brother XD typical '70s
I think Karen wore this suit with a different blouse in the Hal Langdon photo shoot. I wish someone would re-master these old video clips and release them on DVD
Sounds like 2 songs being played at once, certainly not one of their better one's
Richard looking *very* fine !
love all😘
I wish there's a clean video version of all their tv appearances. Very few unfortunately
Wizard And Genie Mr Carpenter
I don't think the Bach experiment works, they tried but it sounds like Richard is trying to play over Karen. Not sure I get why these two pieces in particular were chosen.
Steve was right, they needed a vacation.
hey, dig her awesome bell bottom suit. way beyond cool!
Hi NedNickerson2010 do you have this entire show taped...would love to see the interview with John Denver.
I have had family members and friends with similar illnesses and it can be such a helpless
feeling to watch someone you love suffer and not be able to do anything.
@@palmasmileyearlychildhoodc8384 God bless you and your family!💙
Funny Karen Carpenter dated Steve Martin for a time. Too bad she didn't marry him instead of the guy she married. She might still be alive.
+Michonne I think this may have been during Richard's lude days.
Yes, I love the Carpenters more than anything, but this was truly painful.
This was painful to listen to and not because of mega talent Karen. How I wish Karen had had the guts to to tell him to go jump off a cliff when he wanted to do crap like this.
I agree it was bad.
