What Makes a Good Manager #1: There is a lot of misinformation about employee retention and what employees need to stay in a job. Yoga, concierge service, and espresso machines - aka perks - do not aid retention. Perks are nice, but no one has ever said, “I hate my boss, but we have yoga, so I think I’ll stay.”
What Makes a Good Manager #2: The only workplace perk to that is known to increase employee retention is a flexible schedule and the ability to work from home.
What Makes a Good Manager #3: To know if a flexible schedule is important to an employee, you have to know your employees, ask the right questions, and create a relationship in which employees are comfortable telling you the truth.
What Makes a Good Manager #4: Employees want a manager who takes an interest in them, gives balanced and fair feedback, and genuinely tries to help them advance their career.
What Makes a Good Manager #5: You can’t always give employees more money or more responsibility, but you can always be someone who is great to work for. And that costs nothing.
