What are my key takeaways: A good question is a query seeking novel information towards a particular objective. It is better to: - start with genuine curiosity and a desire to learn - map out my knowledge to gain clarity of what I already know and where the boundaries of my knowledge are Check the conversation goal: is it altruistic/cooperative? - start with open-ended questions to build trust and rapport If the conversation goal tends toward narcissism/competition, ask more direct/closed-loop questions Other takeaways: - ask lesser sensitive questions before moving onto more sensitive ones - ask follow-up questions to gain deeper insights and understanding - reframe questions to approach a topic from a different angle - you can use reverse psychology (assuming the pessimistic side) to frame questions for more formulative responses - avoid asking leading/biased questions - avoid the interrogation experience by paying attention to the cadence and continuity of questions, be mindful of tonality and casualness (no rapid firing, keep follow-up questions and smooth transitions, keep casual) - give the person an out and freedom to change their answer anytime Diverse teams will require different communication styles/skills. We need practice and may need a communication coach.
Dr. Grace Lee, I'm a fan of your videos. There was an experience where I have given an uncomfortable situation to my supervisor simply because, "I don't trust that the person has my best interest". Instead of making him understand the impact of his actions towards me that makes me not trust him, I went straight telling him that I don't trust him and then proceeded mentioning the events. This has put us both on an awkward situation and I'm guilty of starting the conversation on the wrong foot. I should have watched my cadence, my tone, and should have focused more on altruistic questions to drive my point. That way, I could have discovered some of his answers and views about the events that I have a bad experience with and we could have worked towards a better outcome. Your videos helps me understand what I can still improve. You were able to articulate it very well. Thank you very much.
"Being able to answer questions is smart, being able to come up with a question is genius because questions are your answers" - Awesome!😍😍 very inspiring 😊
Many thanks to Dr. Grace Lee, very helpful. Good questions are to seek novel information towards specific objective. Knowledge is power, asking good questions demonstrates superpower 1.Approach with genuine curiosity Map out your knowledge, the more you know, the more you realize that you don’t know. When you know that you don’t know, you will develop your genuine curiosity. 2.Analyze the conversational goal (altruism to narcism) Start with least sensitive question: open questions, close questions, reverse psychology questions 3.Avoid interrogation experience: cadence/ rhythm, continuity/follow-up, casualness
What resonated with me were the three tips for behaviors to watch for to avoid interrogation! And the big tip I had forgotten about is to give them an out!! At the beginning! As a coach and home visitor we have to ask many sensitive questions and offering an out is so important! Also, starting with the less sensitive question and moving toward the most sensitive. You have so much to offer Dr. Grace. Thank you for sharing your wisdom. And "questions are your answers". So true.
Dr.Grace Being Business analysis practitioner at workplace asking right questions to a identified stakeholders requires skill. This V log will facilitate that. Thank you very much Dr.Grace.
I was actually planning to ask a church member a few straight questions while watching this video. You helped me to modify my questions for better relationships. Thank you.
Thank you Dr. Grace! The next week I will have on Monday three job interviews, certainly I will keep in mind how to make great questions in order to achieve a better result. A better result to me in this situation means, to get the job I think to be the better fit as soon as possible.
Thanks for sharing valuable tips on how to communicate better. Your time, insights, experience, and expertise on these subjects are precious and appreciated. 🙏👍
Mam this was a really helpful vedio I have gained lot of knowledge now i need d to practice them.thnk u Dr Garce...your personal profile is also very enriching a neuroscient ,a public speaker leadership coach, wow,a whole lot of other achievements , lot to learn from you
Questions are the GATEWAY to CRITICAL THINKING. Knowing what to ask is the KEY that unlocks the gateway/door. Study to show yourself approved in your area of expertise/PROfession that you might ask "Germaine" questions.
I appreciate your comment, Daniel. Asking better follow up questions is a great way to improve your communication skills and show your interest and curiosity. It can also help you build rapport and trust with others. I hope the tips I shared can help you in your next conversation.
Do you have insight into how to feel comfortable about getting a chance to speak up in meetings when others are talking, I’m not in the agenda or no one calls on me? I have a lot to say but I’m too afraid of interrupting people. Thanks.
For me, i say "umm.." while raising my hand slightly, or say a few words of the question and if interrupted, ill resect and be quiet to listen. This is good enough indication that you have a question and usually they will come back and ask, "hey, do you want to say something earlier?" works everytime for me.
@@DrGraceLee students at universities should definitely need to watch your videos. There are lots of useful materials to learn. If you haven’t reached out to universities, I would definitely try reach out to them, if I were you. it was hard to find useful contents like this 20 years ago when I was in college. After working as a professional for so long and watching your contents I am like uh huh she is right on:)
my key takeaway was casualness of questions. one ceo got mad at me saying i'm friendly not respectful. what can i say to maintain a healthy balance and keep a good relationship so that i am perceived as I intend to. Thanks.
I seem to muffle my voice subconsciously when it comes to talking in general to people that aren’t in my inner circle because I’m introverted and shy. How do I work on that?
Idk. I have doubt on this content being influential for someone likes me who hungry to learn and ask questions (late bloomer millennial gen worker here) See below: Every day when I go to my desk job I can’t comfortably ask any questions. It has to be the right kinds ie quality and productive for them to the experts DESPITE them saying “let me know if you have any question.” Well I do, a LOT and the fact that I kept getting unwanted unhelpful answers from them are hurting my confidence to succeed not at work but in life and I know this is the truth because I learned that these experts at work only want to hear quality productive questions. Not quick question, simple relevant question and such..like they don’t have time to help others grow these days (like they’re only looking out for themselves) and such casual simple informal questions of mine are a way for me to gain confidence in my knowledge skill abilities and characteristics. Overall. I’m not convinced that this video benefit anyone in my shoes.

- map out my knowledge to gain clarity of what I already know and where the boundaries of my knowledge are
Check the conversation goal: is it altruistic/cooperative?
- start with open-ended questions to build trust and rapport
If the conversation goal tends toward narcissism/competition, ask more direct/closed-loop questions
Other takeaways:
- ask lesser sensitive questions before moving onto more sensitive ones
- ask follow-up questions to gain deeper insights and understanding
- reframe questions to approach a topic from a different angle
- you can use reverse psychology (assuming the pessimistic side) to frame questions for more formulative responses
- avoid asking leading/biased questions
- avoid the interrogation experience by paying attention to the cadence and continuity of questions, be mindful of tonality and casualness (no rapid firing, keep follow-up questions and smooth transitions, keep casual)
- give the person an out and freedom to change their answer anytime
Diverse teams will require different communication styles/skills. We need practice and may need a communication coach.

Great topic ! What question we should ask during a business networking event ?

Dr Grace please see this comment above.
Just be brave and when there is a pause, say “I have a question “
And how did you resolve it?

Good question
I seem to muffle my voice subconsciously when it comes to talking in general to people that aren’t in my inner circle because I’m introverted and shy. How do I work on that?
Take acting lessons. Al Pacino is shy in real life but look at him on the screen.
Knowing the desired outcome will determine the path of your questions.
