You could almost see him in a paternal role with gestures and facial ticks. It was obvious he was a little uncomfortable. Jennifer Connelly played it perfect, I've been told it's allegory to a girl's wish to be a woman. Which it totally conveyed.
Yes! I agree, and his music generally was so forward-thinking and innovative that you forget how beautiful his voice is. This soundtrack really shows off how amazing he was to capture the fantasy feeling and his vocal talent. It would not be the same movie without him!
I remember that the first time we watched this, I was very impressed with David Bowie’s performance throughout the film. It was also very nice to hear his ’Star Man’ song in ‘The Martian’.
The reason Jared looks like he does is because it's HER fantasy. In "the real world", one of her idols is Bowies character seen in the clippings on her wall, so in her mind she projects the way he looks on the goblin king. It's many a young women's innocent fantasy to have an older man show interest in them. Shes on the brink of sexual awakening. Her room is filled with other references that she brings in to her labyrinth fantasy.
Diamonddogusa “I’ll paint you mornings of gold, spin you valentine evenings.” So great! There’s a great chill cover of it by Karliene on here and on iTunes. Her version of Within You is also dramatic and creepy, hee.
All of her songs for the Labyrinth were amazing, but her version of Magic Dance is her best rendition by far. It's so magical and fun. It's new and old at the same time.
Underground is another great one. The line, in Bowie’s voice, “Don’t tell me the truth hurts, little girl. Cause it hurts like hell...” hit me to the core and haunted me as a child. I get goosebumps even when I hear it now, it’s been a while though.
I have an amazing fact: my father's cousin, Ian Rolph, worked on this film (the worm and the wiseman) and sympathized with David Bowie who gave him the necklace he wore as the goblin king. Ian sadly passed away in 2012 (I still miss him very much) and I inherited said necklace. I have photos to prove it. Jenifer was a 14yo playing a 14yo and yes it was intentionally creepy, there is a subtext.... I won't explain, fans will understand. I was always a massive fan of Labyrinth but only learned about my family connection to the film after the death of Ian Rolph so I never got to talk to him about it, I'm gutted to this day.
Hey thank you for sharing your special story. I’m so sorry you lost a family member. Looking back it was creepy. I absolutely loved this movie as a young girl. The music the characters and of course David Bowie. As an adult it’s upsetting to see the undertones. But it was a great movie.
One fact that should have got a quick mention. When the Goblin King is twirling the crystal balls in his hand and moving them around his arm. There was a guy behind David Bowie actually doing that trick.
Yeah, I just commented on that here, then scrolled down and noticed your comment. Guy's name was Michael Moschen... and he did an _amazing_ job in the film. Give to him mad respect! =)
@@jasonmarin8187 Brian Froud was clearly on an M.C. Escher kick when he helped design Labyrinth, given its upside down, winding pathways seen on occasion.
My daughter was just asking me not too long ago how did he do that and I said I don’t know baby I’ve been wondering that since I was a kid. Thanks I’ll have to tell her
A few things on the video. The giant creature is Ludo not Pluto. David Bowie wrote Magic Dance so I it seems he was the one who liked the hoodoo movie line. Why does David Bowie appear in Jennifer Connely's room in acticle clippings? Because EVERYTHING in the fantasy world of Labyrinth can be seen in her room before the adventure begins. Much like with Dorthy in the Wizard of Oz, Sarah carries things from her world into this fantasy land with her. You can see things like stuffed versions of Ludo and Sir Didymus in her room as well as other toys and object representing things she will encounter in the Labyrinth. A deeper look into the film might also indicate a fan crush on David Bowie. Sarah is growing into a young woman, and that indicates becoming sexually aware too. Jareth tries to woo her throught the film and lets not forget that unsubtle croth of his. The ballroom scene is very seductive and the final song in the film is about his being rejected by someone he loves. There was even a line in an early draft of the script where the Goblin King tells Sarah that he'd rather have a Goblin Queen than a Goblin Prince. The film has a lot of depth to it for a flight of fantasy.
Well said, but to add to what you said about the the clippings of Bowie in Sarah's room, Jim Henson commented on that in at least one interview. He said that Jareth was always meant to be a rock star, a young girls fantasy. That's why he wanted a real rock star to play the role. So, what do teenage girls do with their fantasy men? They put pictures of them all over their room!
I would even suggest that the presence of Bowie in the clippings is actually her mother's new husband. In the one clipping we see there's an article about her mother who is some kind of actress or famous personality, with her new beau. It would make sense since Bowie plays the villian in her fantasy, and Sarah is clearly struggling with her parents' divorce.
Not exactly. If you look at the page in Sarah's scrapbook, 7:25 timestamp, there is a picture of her mother and her together - surrounding the pictures are playbills from her mother's plays, and articles with her mother with David Bowie - it's mentioned in the movie that her mom is famous, and that she has a new husband. One of the articles says she has been in an on and off again relationship with someone and it's been on again, with a picture of her and David. Now, it doesn't say the name David, but that is who we can probably assume is the mother's new husband, making him somewhat the love interest/villain in her fantasy.
According to the Jim Henson biography, it was Jim Henson's son Brian who suggested casting David Bowie as the Goblin King over Sting because he felt Bowie was more iconic.
That’s true of far too many really enjoyable films. Also that so many times critics will bash a film that becomes a classic or is a pleasure to watch, and then give some of the most boring, waste of time films rave reviews!
This is probably why we don't get any new films as iconic as those...we all love them, but the studios don't want to "waste" the money on them. We wouldn't see their like again until LotR and the Hobbit.
Same here - which is why "Atlantis Squarepantis" is my favourite episode of SpongeBob of all time! (If you don't know what I'm talking about, check out the episode...)
Still to this day listen to the soundtrack,...just bought this movie in 4K hdr,but like many 4K titles its way to grainy,....the 1080p version looks better
Yeah, why do they let things like that happen? (Although, from the "Pawn Stars" and other shows that do memorabilia, I know that foam they use deteriorates very badly. I have a couple of tools--my airbrush is one--that was packed in form-fitting foam that's crumbling rapidly, after _only_ 40 years, so I do understand the fragility issue. But for pity's sake, it's _Hollywood_ so there must be lots of people who could've refurbished it!)
@@jc.1191 Yes, I remember that from my early days around electronic equipment. My brother was an electronics nut, very interested in 1940s radios and TVs (when he could get his hands on them. I later studied electronic instrumentation and control, but couldn't hack the math, so years later, when I tried to finish some of the projects of the course, I had old-fashioned condensers melt (the waxy kind) or produce a horrible-smelling smoke (if it was encased). I've also had rubber insulation on things crumble and become downright dangerous. (Sadly, my old body feels like it's past it's shelf life, too.) Stay safe.
It's really hard to imagine anyone else in the role of Jarrett, Bowie just WAS that character. It's a shame he didn't take more work in acting, because he always nailed it in the roles he did take.
He has acted in a few films. I believe last time I saw him was as Nikola Tesla in The Prestige. Bowie is perfect as Jareth, but I agree with youtuber Mark in that I could kinda see Sting for the role as well.. though I doubt it would've been as great!
Many years of being an adult, serving as a combat vet in the Army, and numerous other bs that goes with "adulting," but I can always count on you Minty to take me back to my childhood and bring back memories of a simpler time...
At one point Jareth who consantly miss pronounces Hoggle´s name calls him Hogwarts. I wonder if J.K Rowling heard that and used it in Harry Potter because of it.
Martin Dummatzen Having never seen or read Harry Potter it wouldn't surprise me. Someone did a comedy video (look up "Lord of the Potter") highlighting the similarities between it and the Lord of the Rings, and it seems like she ripped off of Tolkien quite a bit.
JK Rowling was about as original as a Kareoke singer. It's all ripped off Tolkien, Pratchett and whatever else she could get her hands on, even her goblins were ripped off old anti semitic propaganda
The part I love the most about all the '80s fantasy films technically isn't "movie trivia", or even that the soundtracks were so epic we still love them today...it's that in Los Angeles, with the exception of 2020, there's a costume party called the Labyrinth of Jareth or, more commonly, the Labyrinth Masquerade. It's no longer directly inspired by the film but has spun off its own lore in the style of the '80s fantasy films, but some folks still attend dressed as Jareth or Sarah. In the meantime, imagine any Halloween party you've been to, where costumes range from store-bought to whatever your friends felt like making...now imagine what a Halloween party would look like if attended by some of the best costumers and make-up artists from Hollywood, local renaissance faires, cosplay conventions, and college theater departments...my profile picture is from myself attending in 2013 or so. THAT's how iconic and beloved this film is...it shows the power of fantasy and imagination, and brings out the best in us.
I so love this movie. I'm 51 and was thrilled when it came out on DVD, so I could stop wearing out VHS tapes of it. HUGE crush on Jareth back then and still a little bit now.
wstine79: And on the flipside, made women into giggling little girls. I have to agree with TV Tropes- it's easier to count the Labyrinth fans who DON'T want to f*** him.
As someone who's read the graphic novel- highly recommend. It's super entertaining. Basically, Jareth's given Toby everything he's ever wanted since leaving the labyrinth, and Toby hates it. Because if he thinks something like 'That guy was a jerk, I hope he breaks his leg-" BOOM! broken leg. And he doesn't know why this is happening. One night, a goblin steals his homework and while chasing it, he stumbles back into the world of the Labyrinth. Which gets WAY more fleshed out. Jareth then spontaneously decides he's done ruling, and the Goblin city is Toby's problem now. But, uh oh! foreign rulers want to take over the throne! And now Toby has to deal with all of THAT.
Fun fact: Labyrinth's costume designer actually designed David Bowie's tights to purposefully accentuate his..... uh..... nether region. And boy, did it ever work!
Lots of people keep watching (and complaining about) the crotch - I really can not imagene why. Totally fits the rockstar image as wel as the classic prince-in-thights portrayed in thousands and thousands of storybooks, so ... what else should he be wearing? Also ... he is a real boy instead of all the ken-dolls in cartoons, isn't that also part of the " whoa this is real and not fantasy?" theme of the film?
"You remind me of the man..." I think maybe the line was chosen because that film starred an older leading man with a young girl, just like Labyrinth itself.
I really love Labyrinth I remember watching it as a child. But did anyone else notice Minty call Ludo Pluto a few times lol side note my first pet was called Ludo :)
I also heard it too, but as like you all the video made up for it. I also laughed at the bulge comment, I had said it many times that his bulge is its own character.
Samantha Beck yes thank you Samantha I was coming here just to comment on that. I enjoy watching his videos but if you're going to do something like this please get the names right. 😀
First time I saw this was in high school when my mom bought my sister the DVD for her birthday. We watched it almost every day for months. I admit I did have a little crush on David Bowie.
I don't think I could ever convey in words how important this movie is to me. I saw it when I was a child in the 80s, and it became one of those movies I'd show to new friends who hadn't seen it, simply for the joy of doing so. There's so much to this movie that makes me happy, from the characters and songs, to the beautiful locations, and the lovely story told throughout. It truly is a classic of fantasy film making, and I hope future generations enjoy it as much as I do.
How did this movie not kill at the box office? I watched it on VHS at one of my buddy's birthday parties when I was probably 10 years old and instantly loved it!! My sons love it now too. Such a FANTASTIC movie!! Excellent story, music, acting, effects.....everything about it is brilliant!!
We had the best movies growing up in the 80’s. The part when she thinks she’s home in her room but then it all falls apart really freaked me out as a kid.
This movie NEVER ages!!!! Its a Brilliant fantasy movie! One of my top 3 Favs!! 🌺🌺🌺🌺 And the soundtrack was Awesome! " You remind me of the Babe!" LOVE IT!❤❤❤
The reason you see Jareth in her room early on was the ending, when at first it was suggested that it was all a dream. Almost all of the movie can be found in her room which is incredible.
In my family, this is a movie that many of us can quote word for word, but did anyone else wear out the VHS tape as a kid rewinding the "stepping stones" scene over and over?
Before I re-introduced myself to this movie back in 2001, I remembered seeing it as a kid but the only scenes I could remember were The Ballroom Scene and Sarah confronts Jareth in the Escher Room. Strong moments in the film I must add. I watch it whenever it comes on TV, even tho' I own the DVD which I almost wore out back in 2004-05....and can quote the ENTIRE dialogue from start to finish. Labyrinth is that movie I *truly* wished had a sequel that stars the original cast BUT with Bowie gone, it wouldn't be the same without our Goblin King....UNLESS someone wrote a script that *could* work around that. Now I'm hearing some lady wanted to do a ''sequel'' to this classic that really won't be a tie-in to the original....I honestly hope she doesn't make it because I get the feeling it won't have that ''magic'' Labyrinth has. 8:40 If you thought THAT was ''creepy'' Jareth trying to kiss Sarah during the Ballroom scene, then you are *not* aware of the novel 'Labyrinth' where it shows Jareth WAS originally supposed to do that in the actual movie, BUT with Sarah being a 15 yr old and Jareth an older man, it wasn't going to come across right with the US audience. ....which is why in the music video 'As the World Falls Down' they had an older actress play Sarah instead of Jennifer herself, something that never made sense to me regardless. ...and on a side note, if you listen carefully to the song ''As the World...''' you *can* hear Jennifer in the [refrain?], it's not loud but it is her.
I'm surprised that you didn't mention the fact that Gates McFadden, AKA Dr Beverly Crusher from Star Trek TNG was head choreographer of this movie just about the time that TNG was released.
This was a lovely look back at such an iconic film. I had Labyrinth on VHS tape when I was younger and I actually watched it so often I snapped the tape. I was devastated. I have 2 problems with this list though. Firstly, how can you do a clip like this and get a characters name wrong, or not know it at all? The evil red things were called Fireys, and the big red monster was called Ludo, not Pluto! And secondly, you can't have a fact list like this and not acknowledge the genius that was Michael Moschen. Michael was actually the one who juggled the glass balls. It was an amazingly difficult task because he had to be hidden behind Bowie and therefore couldn't see the globes, so he was basically juggling blind.
Hey Minty, Your work is awesome. I'm bingeing on your videos. I'd just like to add that the baby in Labyrinth was actually Toby Froud, the son of the conceptual designer for the movie Brian Froud, the brilliant fantasy artist, whose vision and creature design is everywhere in the movie! He also worked with Jim Henson on The Dark Crystal. His artwork is brilliant. And the baby Toby, is now also an artist, puppet maker following on in the style of his father & mother!
The reason that there are pictures of Bowie in Sarah's room is that the whole thing takes place in her mind. She has stuffed animals and toys that resemble all the major creatures in the film.
The one thing which I thought argued against this. IIRC, Sarah first meets Jareth in her bedroom and is returned to the house in the living room. I know that is a bit of a nit-pick, but the Dungeons and Dragons in me says not in her dreams.
This. Obviously stories/movies don't say conclusively and rather leave that up to the viewer, but here it's hinted quite strongly at. And thinking about it critically, how else would one explain the creatures of the Labyrinth to have real life counterparts in shape of toys and picture scraps? You could come up with something, of course, but it's generally going to be a lot more convoluted explanation than the simple one, that's it's all in her imagination.
@2mwillis No. The makers of the fantasy epic "Creature Features" - what _The Dark Crystal_ (and its Netflix prequel) & _The Labyrinth_ both are - particularly envisioned the latter of the two as a coming-of-age allegory for teenage female evolution from girlish childhood to adult womanhood.
As a kid, I couldn't understand the name of the movie and frequently forgot what it was called but I knew it was my favorite. Anytime it came on TV, I immediately stopped whatever I was doing to watch the movie about the "pretty girl" and the "cool guy"
The Bowie in Sarah's Scrap book and mirror are supposed to be her mother's lover (the novelization). Everything in The Labyrinth exists in some form in Sarah's reality and of course the villain takes the form of the man who took her mother. The Labyrinth is symbolic of self-exploration, growing up.
Minty, I know I'm late to the party here, but the most amazing fact about the movie has been omitted. The dance choreography was provided by none other than Dr Beverly Crusher of Star Trek the Next Generation fame. She used her first name in the credits of labyrinth, and her middle name for acting credits, later.
THANK YOU FOR COVERING THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!! This is one of my favorite movies!!!!!!!!! I didn't even know about the books that take place afterwards and never noticed the faces all over the place. I need to be more observant. lol
Jarred was watching sarah right from the beginning when she is in the park an when it starts to rain she runs home he is in a form as an owl he then flies into her room after Toby was taken 😁😁😁😁
I know, dammit. XD Sarah made a mistake. However, he was a little pushy. I would have loved to have seen that sequel and seen her start wishing for him again when she became a woman seeking a partner.
One of my favorite movies.(I'm in my 50's) I'm not really a fan of Jennifer Connelly or David Bowie( no particular reason) but they're great together. I love the beginning and end song Underground. And Chilly Down sung by the fireies( however you spell it) I ABSOLUTELY LOVE "Sarah's" hair and gown in the ballroom scene. I even tried to copy "Jareth's" make up. I could go on and on, it's just a great movie. I got the VHS not long after it came out. And have watched it many times. Hmmm... I'll have to watch it again soon, it's been awhile.
This movie is by far, one of the greatest ever! As a child of the 80s, I watched & rewatched this, along with The Dark Crystal, (which you should do a video on next 😉), & countless others. Thank you for being awesome Minty! This is the first video of yours I've watched, & now I'm hooked. Keep doing a great job!! On to the next, even though I have to get the kids up in a couple hours for school 😅
I always saw Bowie as the real hero in this one. He fulfilled her every fantasy because he was in love with her, and she was all "Me, me, me." She didn't deserve him.
Maybe you have them already, but there's two Brian Froud books, Goblins and the World of the Dark Crystal you should get your hands on (he did the artwork, his wife Wendy did the puppets and their son Toby played Toby) Also, hope you checked out the Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance on Netflix
...I had to pause the video to express my amazement at the hidden ‘faces’ fact, I remember spotting the first one but not the others. Always found that kind of wild, this movie has much too it even after several watchings there’s usually something you didn’t see before. But wonderful collection of facts, I remember reading the anime books when those came out...rather fascinating stories but still an actual movie would’ve been so mind blowingly amazing.
There's newspaper clippings though and it seems he was a celebrity crush for Sarah. Of course, she seems to want to be an actress, maybe her mom was an actress and she'd met him before through her mom?
This was certainly a fun movie for me growing up and the sets and puppets were totally fantastic! I also had a little bit of a small screen crush on Jennifer Connelly. She was very beautiful and a very talented actress too! I liked the story a lot too! Thank you for covering this movie.
Pluto? xDD Did you mean Ludo? Also, the graphic novel series has been disowned as the sequel. I've read it and hell, I've read better fan fictions than that waste of ink and paper. xP I would've preferred to see MirrorMask, which was originally intended to be the sequel, reinstated as such. Brian Froud also mentions in the Making Of documentary of Labyrinth that infamous tight pants were intentional, as well as how he describes what influences he used to make the Goblin King. He's part death knight, part Brothers Grimm fairy tale, part rock star, part bad boy. He is supposed to be a teenage girl's fantasy villain, and boy did the amazing David Bowie pull that off flawlessly.
David Bowie and his sensual mild-aggressiveness REALLY did it for me when I was 15. Like Disney princes for some, David Bowie's character was my fantasy. In fact my life partner, has a "look" that is very similar to one of the looks Jareth gives Sarah in the ballroom scene. Of course we had to go to the 20th anniversary Labyrinth ball in LA in 2017.
This movie is so much fun! I think Sarah, Hoggle, and Jareth underwent the greatest changes throughout the movie, with Sarah growing up, Hoggle learning what it means to be a friend, and Jareth falling in love. The movie would not have been the same without David Bowie, or Jennifer Connelly for that matter, even though her performance was panned by critics. She certainly looked the part of Sarah, and while delivery and most definitely script could have been better, she did the best with what she was given. Plus she was still pretty green as an actress at the time. All of that aside, overall the movie is chaotic and at times creepy, but it's still so much fun. :)
Another movie I first watched on HBO, I also recorded in on VHS, and watched it so many times that to this day I can play my DVD copy, turn off the sound and quote the dialog verbatim through the entire film. I have also seen The Bachelor and The Bobby Sockser, I actually watched that one as a kid, so I recognized the line the first time I watch Labyrinth. As for how the lines from the old movie wound up in the song Magic Dance, Bowie was a fan on old movies.
Great, great film. I loved this movie growing up and have since watched it with my daughter. I love the ending bit, it always stuck with me - the "you have no power over me". Thanks for doing another awesome video, Minty.
***CREEPY DAVID BOWIE BULGE EXPLAINED*** there was an interview in with the extras of the labyrinth movie where Jim Henson is explaining the creepy Chemistry Between the obsession of David Bowie's character to the main female character.... basically what most people don't realize about the movie is that it's depicting the girl who is transitioning from a child to an adult. (puberty) and the creepiness of David Bowie represents an awkward sexual attraction and that famous bulge is basically there to convey that type of creepy sexual confusion that she doesn' understand due to the change in body and herself. on top of that she's also trying to fight the changes in her life such as trying to coexist with her new Stepmother and the new responsibilities from babysitting which also would explain the scene where her dad is giving her a lecture after she shows up late and why she wished the baby never existed so everything can go back to the way it was before 😬👍
Thanks, one of my favorite movies... Watch it all the time, just amazing movie magic and all that talent... Love Jennifer Connelly and Miss David Bowie
I've never been a massive Bowie fan, although I have his greatest hits and a few albums, but I loved this film and may make it my evening's viewing. The whole scene using the song "As The World Falls Down," is magical music and film. It reminds me of George Michael's video to "Waltz Away Dreaming," also magical.
You for got to mention that Gates McFadden (Dr Crusher from Star Trek TNG) was the choreographer for this movie 😁 but solid episode Mark! Keep them coming man.
And if you look into the extras on the DVD you will see that the actress who plays Beverly Crusher in Star Trek Next Gen, Gates McFadden, was a costumer designer on the movie.
Did you know that Bowie was considered for the cast in Hook as, Captain James Hook? I have those Labyrinth Mangas. JARE-ETH and Ludo. I sent one of my best friends who moved out of state a drawing of Ludo that she got tattooed on her arm to even have the strokes of my markers and everything in it, so touching. I cried. It's implied that her obsession with the Play that she's obsessively quoting and everything is because her mother was an actress who starred in the play, and David Bowie was an actor in the "play" who played The goblin king. That's why theres playbill /clips and with their faces on it all over her room. Toby Froud (not Todd) son of probably the world's most renowned Fairie artist, Brian Froud who was the art genius of the film. His art was not only all over the Labyrinth, but also behind everything in The Dark Crystal. Also the red guys are called FIREYS. One of them was voiced by Cat from Red Dwarf. I learned how to contact juggle because of this film. Comes in handy when I dress up as Jareth.
Someone probably already pointed this out, but Sarah's big loveable companion isn't called "Pluto" or "Bluto", but "Ludo". Also, the actor portraying baby Toby was actually named Toby Froud. He is the real-life son of Brian and Wendy Froud, who both also worked on the film - Brian being the visual designer of the movie and Wendy being part of Jim Henson's workshop. Another nice little info nugget. 🙂 (Wendy was an assistant puppeteer on Yoda, by the way, and all three Frouds would later work together on the Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance series, another universe designed by Brian Froud)
those red demon creatures scared me too. They plucked out their own eyes and they wanted to take Sarah's head off and then their heads could fly by using their ears. Surprised there was no fun fact about the 2 door guards, one that tells the truth and one that always lies. One of my favorite parts of the movie.
The near kiss in the comic makes sense as apparently Jareth was supposed to kiss Sarah, but Bowie refused to do it because of Jennifer being underage.
You could almost see him in a paternal role with gestures and facial ticks. It was obvious he was a little uncomfortable. Jennifer Connelly played it perfect, I've been told it's allegory to a girl's wish to be a woman. Which it totally conveyed.
Maybe Bowie refused because Jennifer wasn't a boy 😉😏
I’d like to believe that, if it weren’t for the very likely possibility he slept with underage girls.
She was only 14 at the time, so good for him.
David Bowie, the consumate gentleman!
Bowie looks majestic and beautiful in Labyrinth, I can't see anyone else doing that part.
I can kind of see Sting in the role, though it would have been a quite different and probably rather darker movie. Jagger or Jackson ... not so much.
The only person I could possibly see is Prince, but Bowie is a way better actor.
Labyrinth and The NeverEnding Story were the most magical films of my childhood.
Never could get that into "The NeverEnding Store," but absolutely _loved_ "Labyrinth" and "The Dark Crystal." =)
Yes! Here as well.
Back when true imagination still existed in movies.
Dont forget Dark Crystal
I'm 41 this year and STILL refuse to watch the horse in the mud scene on Never Ending Story. It still upsets the fuck outta me 😭
The reason Jared looks like he does is because it's HER fantasy.
Can you give me a clue as to where those clippings are?
@arod8377 minty goes over this around the 7 min mark
"As the world falls down" is the real star of the soundtrack. Great, simple ballad.
Diamonddogusa “I’ll paint you mornings of gold, spin you valentine evenings.” So great! There’s a great chill cover of it by Karliene on here and on iTunes. Her version of Within You is also dramatic and creepy, hee.
Diamonddogusa couldn't agree more!
I have to agree with that one. It definitely is a song that gets to you. And it's the theme song of the whole adventure.
Still, any girl who watched this movie would've LOVED to be in Sarah's place dancing with Jareth.
That is too bad. I'm sorry for your loss and even more sorry for the way you found out. That would have been a great conversation.
Oh geeze that is really unfortunate! Cool that you have the necklace though!
The worm is one of my favorite characters 💗. Sorry about your loss.
dave jackson I just wrote that too! It’s nice to see the same comment 🙂👍🏻
Thanks I’ll have to tell her
I loved seeing that in the behind the scenes movie. That was really cool!
"You have no power over me."
My most favorite movie line, ever. Used to watch this on VHS, as a kid.
Exactly!!!!!
@@aerynboann3116 Very true!!!!!
I know I couldn't help but think his name is Ludo not Pluto
She merely used the image of Bowie from her real life to be the face of Jareth in her dream. Not creepy. Psychological.
Oh, you already said it! You genius! XD
Exactly, he already said that it paid homage to Wizard of Oz, and this was the most obvious example of one way it did that.
I don't think it was a dream. I think Jareth used Bowie's likeness to make Sarah drop her guard a little, because she knew of Bowie.
Yeah, but I think his opinion is kinda a valid observation too. I like that films can be different to everyone.
According to the Jim Henson biography, it was Jim Henson's son Brian who suggested casting David Bowie as the Goblin King over Sting because he felt Bowie was more iconic.
His daughter too
Oh man I can’t choose! Sting/Bowie...🤯
Thank you, Brian!!
As much as I love Sting and the Police... Yeah, Brian was right. David is absolutely more iconic. They made the right call.
I read it was both his sons. Either way, thank you Henson children!
Bowie was my rockstar crush when this came out in 86. I was 11.
RIP David Bowie ❤🙏
I was 12 and Connelly was a vision to my raging hormones.
i wasnt born yet when this came out but im so madly inlove with him
@@sid2112 Hell yeah. Huge crush.
Me too! Love David bowie!
Nearly every single movie I like 'performed badly' at the box office.
We wouldn't see their like again until LotR and the Hobbit.
same!!! 😭
It just goes to show that you are staying true to yourself! Way to go!
Labyrinth The dark Crystal and The NeverEnding story were and still are the Trinity of movies for children of the 80s
And Legend
Don't forget The Princess Bride and Ladyhawk
@@darrickwhite1986 Thank you. I was going to added that one with the original post.
I'm a simple girl. I see a movie with David Bowie, I watch it. I see a video about The Labyrinth, I watch it.
I see a video, i watch it.
I'm a simple man, I see a video with Jennifer Connelly, I watch it.
Yep, that's part of the reason I watched Zoolander. Well, both Bowie and Billy Zane.
The condition of the Hoggle puppet/costume is heart breaking.
Thankfully he got somewhat restored and looks way better.
@@oldenweery7510 I've had to replace the plastic capacitors in my vintage amps and electronics. It happens.

Brandon Polk Jareth.
Jareth
he had done a few stuff before though. the man who fell to earth was a really strange movie but i enjoyed bowie's character
Bowie's small part in Zoolander always kills it too
He has acted in a few films. I believe last time I saw him was as Nikola Tesla in The Prestige.
Bowie is perfect as Jareth, but I agree with youtuber Mark in that I could kinda see Sting for the role as well.. though I doubt it would've been as great!
The characters bird puppets who pop of their heads and roll them has been creeping the hell out of me since 1986.
The voices for two of them are the Cat from Red Dwarf 😊
Very poignant scene about getting involved with the wrong sort.
Fun fact: One of the puppeteers who played the Firey who ate his own eyes, was Kevin Clash, who plays Elmo.
Seeing as she ripped off everything else, it wouldn't surprise me...
JK Rowling was about as original as a Kareoke singer. It's all ripped off Tolkien, Pratchett and whatever else she could get her hands on, even her goblins were ripped off old anti semitic propaganda
@@saraross8396and ripped off star wars as well
I loved this movie as a kid & I STILL watch & love this movie, as an adult!!!
Me too, if I'm having a bad day I pop this movie on and I feel like a kid again
I’m 38 and this is still my favorite movie.
Mine too, and I'm 61
Best movie of all time - I'm an 80's kid... and play it for my kids to this day (and Yes, It was Ludo.. not pluto)
After this movie, Hoggle left the Labyrinth and joined the Rolling Stones as their guitarist.
Great video!!!
MadMan's Creatives lmao
Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha! 😆

Most underrated comment!.
I'm dying over here!. 😂😂😂😂
I thought he worked at the bank in Harry Potter.
I so love this movie. I'm 51 and was thrilled when it came out on DVD, so I could stop wearing out VHS tapes of it. HUGE crush on Jareth back then and still a little bit now.
I want to throw something at him every time he says Pluto. It’s LUDO!
Right it’s Ludo my kitten is named after Ludo
😂😂😂
One of my all time faves, R.I.P David Bowie.
Ah the Goblin King. One of the characters that made girls into women.
Helped some Boys realize they where AC/DC's or Queen's ;)
Lol
wstine79: And on the flipside, made women into giggling little girls. I have to agree with TV Tropes- it's easier to count the Labyrinth fans who DON'T want to f*** him.
Dat bulge... Also... so androgynously confused.
Also made girls want to be women lol
Latter-DayGamer Proof that the movie was allegory for a girl coming of age and getting sexually involved with an older man?
Lol! It's possible.
Latter-DayGamer it was to give him a Rockstar quality.
WHY????????? whywhywhywhywhywhywhywhyWHY?????
Lots of people keep watching (and complaining about) the crotch - I really can not imagene why. Totally fits the rockstar image as wel as the classic prince-in-thights portrayed in thousands and thousands of storybooks, so ... what else should he be wearing? Also ... he is a real boy instead of all the ken-dolls in cartoons, isn't that also part of the " whoa this is real and not fantasy?" theme of the film?
Even though I've never seen it, this was the movie that made me fall in love with Jennifer Connelly.
I saw it when it first came out, and I had the same reaction to Jennifer Connelly.
R.I.P. David Bowie
Dirty Dan yes. He was the best person ever wish I knew him personally but his death would have been way harder to deal with.
💔
"You remind me of the man..." I think maybe the line was chosen because that film starred an older leading man with a young girl, just like Labyrinth itself.
I really love Labyrinth I remember watching it as a child. But did anyone else notice Minty call Ludo Pluto a few times lol side note my first pet was called Ludo :)
Yes I heard that he also called Jareth, Gareth a couple times as well but such and awesome video who cares. Labyrinth was such great movie
Diff movie but a friend named her cat fizzgig or whatever from the dark crystal

I also heard it too, but as like you all the video made up for it. I also laughed at the bulge comment, I had said it many times that his bulge is its own character.
Samantha Beck yes thank you Samantha I was coming here just to comment on that. I enjoy watching his videos but if you're going to do something like this please get the names right. 😀

there's also the fact that bowie wrote all the songs for the movie. so had someone else been cast the movie could've been way different music-wise.

Ugh, he said 'Bobby-Socker' instead of Bobby-Soxer too.
He also mispronounced Tomei.

Other movies released that week... The Karate Kid 2, Top Gun, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
It didn't stand a chance.

The reason you see Jareth in her room early on was the ending, when at first it was suggested that it was all a dream. Almost all of the movie can be found in her room which is incredible.

Labyrinth scared the hell outta me as a kid, then as an adult the 1st I saw it David Bowie's character made me question my sexuality
In my family, this is a movie that many of us can quote word for word, but did anyone else wear out the VHS tape as a kid rewinding the "stepping stones" scene over and over?
Gates McFadden ;Dr Crusher on Star Trek Next Generaton;was choreographer on this film.
lol i was looking to see if anyone posted that little factiod.
sinisterkitty22 Same here! Only, at that time, she used her first name: Cheryl.
Yeah, I watched the making and noticed her in much of the shots. That was cool!
She did the choreography on a lot of the muppet productions. =)
The dancing doctor XD
Jim Henson is such an important figure in puppetry and special effects!
ElitePizza311 i really really hope the rumors are trye for Gremlins 3, & Jim Henson's creature shop does the puppets for it😉
ElitePizza311 Thank you for posting this.
His death was one of two celebrities that I actually cried over. The other was Mel Blanc. My childhood died when we lost those two. =(
David Bowie was just simply amazing in this and everything else he did.
Sting would have worked as Jareth. He played an real creepy Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen in Dune.
I'm surprised that you didn't mention the fact that Gates McFadden, AKA Dr Beverly Crusher from Star Trek TNG was head choreographer of this movie just about the time that TNG was released.
Still one of my all time favourites- and David Bowie was just brilliant bulge and all...
Lord, it's Toby Froud, not Todd Froud! I gave up watching this video - far too many errors.
Who is now a puppet master himself, like his parents Wendy and Brian Froud.
THANK YOU FOR ACKNOWLEDGING ONE OF THE MOST CREATIVE FAMILIES EVER. The Frouds are magical. And Wendy made YODA.
I thought it was Ludo too Not Pluto
@@kdmuldoon you are correct.
Bowie definitely made that role his own.
I'm still glad and that David Bowie played Jareth. He made the character so iconic. HAIL THE BLACK STAR!!
I think the reason that line got used for the lyrics is because of how well it flows which made it almost perfect for opening a song like that.
One of my favorites I still watch it as an adult. It holds up
Hey Minty, Your work is awesome.
Sir Didymus i think
@2mwillis She was not a druggie. Just a teen girl undergoing puberty's hormonal roller coaster.
One of my most favorite movies soundtracks. If you're a Bowie fan, it's a must in your collection.
Ive been in love with Jennifer connelly ever since.. my one try love, and she still hasn't aged one bit
Aged? She has only gotten better looking since. I swear she has Benjamin Button syndrome. Another good movie by the way!
That's a little creepy.
Though I feel the same way about 70s Kate Bush.
Hard to see her in Requiem
She's still hot asf in Dark Water too👌🏻👌🏻
She takes "pretty" to a whole nuther level. . .
I need to be more observant. lol
I've gotten to see "Labyrinth" with a live audience twice so far. It is worth it if you ever get the chance.
I always thought the story was " her daydream/ imagination due to the clues around her bedroom
Jarred was watching sarah right from the beginning when she is in the park an when it starts to rain she runs home he is in a form as an owl he then flies into her room after Toby was taken 😁😁😁😁
You had me at *DAVID BOWIE* Me to Bowie: }You have [ultimate] power over me!”
Great Video! Since you have done Labyrinth, could you please do a video on The Dark Crystal? It's one of my other favorite Jim Henson movies.
Maybe you have them already, but there's two Brian Froud books, Goblins and the World of the Dark Crystal you should get your hands on (he did the artwork, his wife Wendy did the puppets and their son Toby played Toby)
Also, hope you checked out the Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance on Netflix
...I had to pause the video to express my amazement at the hidden ‘faces’ fact, I remember spotting the first one but not the others. Always found that kind of wild, this movie has much too it even after several watchings there’s usually something you didn’t see before.
But wonderful collection of facts, I remember reading the anime books when those came out...rather fascinating stories but still an actual movie would’ve been so mind blowingly amazing.
I believe David Bowie's picture in her room is supposed to be her mother with her new husband.
which creeps me out even more knowing this
There's newspaper clippings though and it seems he was a celebrity crush for Sarah. Of course, she seems to want to be an actress, maybe her mom was an actress and she'd met him before through her mom?
@@Kahtisemo It's her mom in the photos with her new husband, who happens to be David Bowie.
He is supposed to be a teenage girl's fantasy villain, and boy did the amazing David Bowie pull that off flawlessly.
labyrinthgirl17 thank you!
It bugged me every time he said Pluto
I loved mirrormask! Still own it 😁
David Bowie and his sensual mild-aggressiveness REALLY did it for me when I was 15. Like Disney princes for some, David Bowie's character was my fantasy. In fact my life partner, has a "look" that is very similar to one of the looks Jareth gives Sarah in the ballroom scene. Of course we had to go to the 20th anniversary Labyrinth ball in LA in 2017.
Goblins are traditionally depicted with long pointy noses. Since Bowie didn't have such a feature, They gave him a long pointy bulge instead :D
I LOVE your channel! Talking about all my fave 80’s movies
Can you do one of these about the Dark Crystal?
good idea! maybe do legend too.
daniel mclean Yes, Dark Crystal and Legend!
And when it comes out the slender man
Can you do one I come in peace
I LOVE Dark Crystal ! (My first daughter was named Kira - it actually means 'the Sun')
***CREEPY DAVID BOWIE BULGE EXPLAINED***
there was an interview in with the extras of the labyrinth movie where Jim Henson is explaining the creepy Chemistry Between the obsession of David Bowie's character to the main female character.... basically what most people don't realize about the movie is that it's depicting the girl who is transitioning from a child to an adult. (puberty) and the creepiness of David Bowie represents an awkward sexual attraction and that famous bulge is basically there to convey that type of creepy sexual confusion that she doesn' understand due to the change in body and herself. on top of that she's also trying to fight the changes in her life such as trying to coexist with her new Stepmother and the new responsibilities from babysitting which also would explain the scene where her dad is giving her a lecture after she shows up late and why she wished the baby never existed so everything can go back to the way it was before
😬👍
👍👍‼️. Very good explanation, thanks.
Yeah. The girl acts spoiled rotten. I only recognized that as an adult.
Thanks, one of my favorite movies... Watch it all the time, just amazing movie magic and all that talent... Love Jennifer Connelly and Miss David Bowie
I was going to call my kid Jareth, unfortunately for him I lost the coin toss.

That’s what my boyfriend’s parents did. They named him after the Goblin King and just changed the spelling, and didn’t lose the coin toss lol.
I worked with someone whose grandson was named after The Goblin King.
+Judah - This literally happened to me with me and my ex and our kid.
Now I always remind my son, he’d have a way better name and he agrees lol
Judah Earl what is your sons name? The people want to know!!!!!
Love this movie, & well almost anything Henson did
You for got to mention that Gates McFadden (Dr Crusher from Star Trek TNG) was the choreographer for this movie 😁 but solid episode Mark! Keep them coming man.
And if you look into the extras on the DVD you will see that the actress who plays Beverly Crusher in Star Trek Next Gen, Gates McFadden, was a costumer designer on the movie.
Gates is so talented and underrated. I heart her so bad.
She was actually a choreographer.
Two years before Labyrinth Jennifer Connelly was in Sergio Leone’s, Once Upon A Time In America!
She had already proved her talent right there..
(Wendy was an assistant puppeteer on Yoda, by the way, and all three Frouds would later work together on the Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance series, another universe designed by Brian Froud)
RIP David Bowie.... a great movie
those red demon creatures scared me too. They plucked out their own eyes and they wanted to take Sarah's head off and then their heads could fly by using their ears. Surprised there was no fun fact about the 2 door guards, one that tells the truth and one that always lies. One of my favorite parts of the movie.
