I remember the day this film opened. I was walking in the mall near my home one night, and as I came up to the theater, I started reading over the movie posters. The way this theater displayed its posters, they had the posters for older films first up, and Dawn of the Dead was still playing--I remembered instantly that it was the tag line on that poster 'When there is no more room in Hell the dead will walk the earth' that had mad me go and see the film. So, as I came up to the Alien film poster, and saw the tag line 'In Space No One Can Hear You Scream', that got me instantly interested. It was the cracked egg that made me check the show times. I saw that a new showing was going to start in 5 minutes. I paid and went it. I bought my popcorn, and a soda and made my way to a seat in the middle near the top (back) of the rows of seating. I will never forget this because I had set my soda down, and was munching my popcorn when the chest burster appeared, and I jumped so hard I slung my popcorn all across the people in the rows in front of (below) me. One guy looked angerly back at me, and I shrugged and said, 'Hey, sorry, but at least it was not my coke.'. He laughed, nodded and we went back to watching the film.

In my country, there are no restrictions on children, everyone can go and watch any film, except dirty movies. I was like that since I remember, and my father told me that in his time it was the same. No one cares if it is a horror or violent film, people simply don't believe films affect children too much. And I think that they are right. I was watching all kinds of films since I remember and so many horrors, none of those gave me nightmares, but they sure scared me when I was a little child. But, that is the point of horrors, why would else anyone watch a horror film...

When I first watched this movie what scared me the most was Ash. I had no idea he was a android and when that milky fluid bursts of him after being pummeled by Parker my mind was warped. Ash still just creeps me out as I watch this film at least once a year. So cold and manipulative with superhuman strength. Willing to sacrifice the entire crew to get the Alien cargo back to the corporation. he admired the creature seeing it as better than human more like him, though we never know if his "thoughts" went beyond his programming

Great presentation but a truly golden nugget of trivia was overlooked. "Alien" was shooting at Shepperton Studios the same time as The Who were on a neighboring soundstage filming live performances of "Baba O'Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again" for their documentary feature, "The Kids Are Alright" (1979). The "Alien" crew wound up borrowing the band's laser beam-splitter for the bowels of the derelict craft (where Kane becomes impregnated). The laser served as the electronic "thin layer of mist" blanketing the alien egg farm.

I was 11 when my parents to me to see Alien. Back then some parents (especially mine!!) weren’t very good at picking family friendly movies. Alien wasn’t the first horror film I saw as a little kid . I remember very clearly not being able to sleep well because I kept “seeing” the Alien in the dark shadows of my room at night 😳😰. My parents got what they deserved because I’d often sobbingly crawl into bed with them until I was 13.
On the flip side, they also took me to see STAR WARS in ‘77 and I’ve been a geek ever since 🤓 At 9 yrs old I decided that some day I’d name my son Luke. My son Luke is 27 now 😏lol

I would go in the back of the theater at certain given moments in the movie that I was aware of to watch the audience's reaction to them. it was like a wave of people's bodies jerking back from the screen. I LOVED the movie Dark Star. That movie is HILARIOUS. The main scene with the beach ball alien where it beats the Hairy guy in the head with a broomstick had me in stitches. I was 12 years old in 1979 and thought it was so cool that my mother would let me go see the Dark Star movie because I saw it as a "grown up" movie and I didn't want to see Alien because the trailer played on TV back then scared the daylights out of me. There was a sound played during the Alien trailer that terrified me. It sounded like the synthesizer version of an alien screaming. Now it's just funny to me. So the Dark Star movie was more what I wanted to see because of it being a comedy.

Very good review. Yes, word-of- mouth back in May 1979 was "...don't miss this." I attended one of the very first showings with my girlfriend at the Bay Shore Theater, Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco. The line wrapped around the block. When the Alien creature burst from the chest, about 6-8 women shrieked and fled the theater as if their hair were on fire.
Other theaters reported similar reactions. 20th Century Fox knew they had hit a home run.
BTW, I became a fan of Yaphet Kotto (RIP) due to his presence in "Blue Collar"(1978) along with Harvey Kettle and Richard Pryor, filmed in Kalamazoo, Michigan at the Checker Cab factory. Another top movie buy Paul Schraeder.

I really wanted one of those 18" Alien figures, but as I recall, they were expensive and hard to find. As I was only 12 at the time, I didn't have the money to buy it myself and my parents either deemed it too expensive or couldn't find one when Christmas rolled around.
I do have the Kenner Scorpion Alien (I thought it was the only one that didn't look silly) as well as their Alien vs. Predator 2-pack. Strangely, the alien figure in that pack is dark green, but if you got the same figure separately, it was light blue!
From McFarlane's Movie Maniacs series, I have the Warrior Alien from Aliens as well as the Aliens vs. Predator box set. I never got the individual original Alien figure, but it's the same as the one in the box set. Nor did I ever get any of the figures from Alien Resurrection or AvP, as I really didn't care for their designs. Some of the later figures from other companies look great, but I'm not going to pay $30-40 for an action figure. I have the Alien model kit from MPC, although I just slapped the pieces together and didn't spend any time "finishing" it. One of the arms is broken off now. And I have the novelization of the movie by Alan Dean Foster. I got it through the school book club, so it's likely been somewhat censored. Oh, and I also have a majority of the trading cards, although I never managed to get a full set in any of the series I was collecting.

Sigourney Weaver almost didn't get the part. Her agent got an offer for a female lead in a sci-fi/horror. He sent Weaver to the stage for an audition. In an interview, Weaver said she got lost, wandered around downtown for hours unable to find the theatre which was holding the auditions. At the end of the day, Weaver got fed up, called her agent to tell him she couldn't find the audition and was tired, hungry and was going home. As she stood in the phone booth talking to her agent she spotted the location across the street and told him she found it. The stage house was a small, unimposing lot sandwiched between two larger buildings. She entered, asked around and the staff said they were about to close but she insisted she be seen as she had been trying all day to find it. They squeezed her in at the last minute and the talent scouts were impressed by her range of emotions and acting potential that they sent her onward to casting.

Since Star Wars grabbed my imagination (& gave me nightmares) at 4 or 5 years old... I REALLY wanted to see Alien on HBO with them. It was rated R. I remember them talking about whether I could see it or not. I hung around until about 20 minutes. When that face hugger got Kane... I leaped up from the couch and ran to my room. My parents laughing as I ran! 🤣 When I was a little older I rewatched it myself and was simply drawn into the movie by it's darkness and atmosphere. Kids today don't understand how atmospheric cinema helps pull you into a movie and consider it a slow or boring movie.

5:36 I'll give you credit, Minty. I've read and seen a *lot* of material on *Alien,* but I do not think I ever have seen that particular image.
PS: it was Dan O'Bannon who came up with the chestburster idea, as he had been suffering from Crohn's Disease since his early 20's (an intestinal infection). It was while he was homeless, living on Ron Shusett's couch and having a bought with his Crohn's that he came up with the idea.
7:05 it's even more than that. At first, it was the Mother computer that turned on the crew and had Ash's speech, but Ridley Scott felt it was too close to HAL from 2001, which was how things evolved to one of the crew taking Mother's place. Cinefantastique has a fantasic in-depth article on *Alien* with excerpts from Walter HIll's first draft/rewrite, where Dallas dies from the chestburster, along with a sequence where Ripley has to fight off exploding computer panels and depressurization while stabbing a crystal dome (Mother's brain) with a screwdriver.

Hey, Minty? I’ve got a REALLY good movie for you to review! It’s called “Never Too Young To Die”, and it stars Gene Simmons of KISS as (probably no real shocker) the bad guy. But major twist--the bad guy is actually a GIRL! Meaning The Demon gets majorly in touch with his feminine side in the film. He said later on, “That’ll teach me to read the script first.” But according to the cast and crew during filming, Gene actually had a lot of fun being a chick. It’s like his attitude was, “If I have to be a girl, then goddamit, I’m gonna be a smokin’ hot babe! The QUEEN of the Nighttime World!” Here’s the Entertainment Tonight interview with him in his femme fatale persona: ua-cam.com/video/iBa-BhOb2bo/v-deo.html. PLEAAAAASE?!?!?
Btw--Another little piece of trivia: between takes, Gene did a performance of “This Is A Man’s World” while still in his drag queen Velvet Von Ragnar persona. It is currently unknown whether or not that particular performance has been preserved on film (though it’ll probably be worth a fortune now if it was). And the original Freddie Kruger is one of Gene’s co-stars in that film--not saying which one, though!

For "some weird space thriller" this movie was insanely scary as hell as a kid. Actual horror movie classed flix were rightout lame in comparison to this one. And I still love it - even though AlienS is still my #1.

Absolutely the best si-fi movie ever made and still holds up today and doesn’t even look dated. Just a quick tip for Minty...... The alien actually doesn’t have two mouths.......The inner jaw is its tongue. 😉

As wonderful as Jerry Goldsmith’s soundtrack is, a portion of the credit must go to Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 2, especially for the end credits music.
Goldsmith, like many composers (John Barry and James Horner especially) reuse themes of their own work all through their movie scores. You can definitely hear Alien cues in Star Trek: The Motion Picture, but not quite as much in Outland.

John Barry recycled elements of his "Snake Fight" from the 1976 "King Kong" for the Pawnee attacks in "Dances with Wolves" (1990). John Williams lifted from his 1991 "JFK" score for the dino-embryo theft in "Jurassic Park" (1993).

None of Goldsmith's music from Alien was used in Star Trek; if anything, he just had a similar sound in the music for some of the more dramatic moments in Star Trek.

Another note about Alien (there are many)- there was a scene in the book where Parker stumbles across the Alien mesmerized by a flashing siren in the air lock. He calls up to Ripley in the cockpit to have her open the airlock as soon as he tells her to. As he's waiting for the Alien to step fully into the airlock a klaxon sounds, warning it. The airlock door still manages to close on the Alien's leg, which it rips off to escape being trapped. The Alien's acid blood proceeds to eat a hole in the airlock, nearly sucking Parker into space while the Alien gets away. This is what triggers Ripley to interact with Mother, as she is suspicious something weird is going on. The scene was in the script but the effects were too expensive to shoot.

To this day I lost count of how many times I have watched this film in theaters, on VHS, DVD and TV reruns but it's just like an addiction, I can't resist.
