my mom took me to the movies when i was 7, she thought we were going to see close encounters of the 3rd kind. boy, she was wrong....scared the shit out of me, and gave me a life long love of sci fi. Thanks Minty, this one was great!!!
My mother took me to see Aliens, in the theatre, when I was 6! (1986). I know how you feel! Scared the ever living shit outta me, and made me a life long ALIEN/Sci Fi fan. Thanks Mom!
In my country, there are no restrictions on children, everyone can go and watch any film, except dirty movies. I was like that since I remember, and my father told me that in his time it was the same. No one cares if it is a horror or violent film, people simply don't believe films affect children too much. And I think that they are right. I was watching all kinds of films since I remember and so many horrors, none of those gave me nightmares, but they sure scared me when I was a little child. But, that is the point of horrors, why would else anyone watch a horror film...
I remember the day this film opened. I was walking in the mall near my home one night, and as I came up to the theater, I started reading over the movie posters. The way this theater displayed its posters, they had the posters for older films first up, and Dawn of the Dead was still playing--I remembered instantly that it was the tag line on that poster 'When there is no more room in Hell the dead will walk the earth' that had mad me go and see the film. So, as I came up to the Alien film poster, and saw the tag line 'In Space No One Can Hear You Scream', that got me instantly interested. It was the cracked egg that made me check the show times. I saw that a new showing was going to start in 5 minutes. I paid and went it. I bought my popcorn, and a soda and made my way to a seat in the middle near the top (back) of the rows of seating. I will never forget this because I had set my soda down, and was munching my popcorn when the chest burster appeared, and I jumped so hard I slung my popcorn all across the people in the rows in front of (below) me. One guy looked angerly back at me, and I shrugged and said, 'Hey, sorry, but at least it was not my coke.'. He laughed, nodded and we went back to watching the film.
Great presentation but a truly golden nugget of trivia was overlooked. "Alien" was shooting at Shepperton Studios the same time as The Who were on a neighboring soundstage filming live performances of "Baba O'Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again" for their documentary feature, "The Kids Are Alright" (1979). The "Alien" crew wound up borrowing the band's laser beam-splitter for the bowels of the derelict craft (where Kane becomes impregnated). The laser served as the electronic "thin layer of mist" blanketing the alien egg farm.
We so agree. We recently made an Alien trivia video over on our channel so we just re-watched it and it still soooo holds up! Such a great film then AND NOW! Easily one of our favorites!
Along with John Carpenter's The THING, ALIEN is one of the best Lovecraftian movies ever made. It goes above and beyond meeting all the necessary elements required for telling the best possible "weird tale".
@@Viking_Luchador I’ve heard about that. That may have been sort of shocking considering that the alien would have acted pretty much like an animal with no higher level intelligence throughout the entire movie up until that point……or it could have been incredibly stupid.
I never clicked on a video so fast. The Alien franchise is by far the best sci-fi horror creature feature. For me this is not just a film but a piece of art.
As a 10 year old in '79 I didn't get to see it back then, but my mom bought me the movie comic that came out at the same time. I remember seeing the first pic of the Alien and I was even afraid of that. I kept opening and closing the comic at the page with the creature, facinated and scared at the same time. As a 53 year old I love this movie and it is in my top 10 of best movies ever. The design of the Alien is just so iconic.
Wow. Not me, i didn't watch Alien, in 1979. Maybe in 2007 or 2009. I guess, I can't remember. But I did watch it. When I was 12. I watch 4 Alien movies. Their were six. Prometheus and Alien Covenant, part 1 and 2. Everytime I see sigourney Weaver, and her hair. She remind me of my mom. She does have the same hair style. I saw an old photo of my Dad and Mom. She's mexican. Not me... I refuse to believe I'm Mexican.
I was 10 when my mom took us kids to see it. There were 12 total people in the theater for the afternoon show and six of us came in the same station wagon. My mom didn't realize it was going to be so scary and almost left the theater. She wasn't going to take us kids though.
I was 6 years old when this movie came out. My Dad took me to go see it because that's what cool Dad's did back in those days. It was beyond awesome even though I had nightmares for the next few weeks. I even had the toy which I still have to this day. Good times.
Great video. Fun fact: it was Alan Ladd Jr (then president of 20th Century Fox and the guy who greenlit _Star Wars_ & _Blade Runner_ ) who said to Ridley Scott when casting, 'Why can’t Ripley be a woman?'
An absolute masterpiece, one of the greatest films of all time regardless of genre & my favorite movie. Very seminal in many ways. It’s more of an event, than just a film. Bravo! to all involved!
Picture this - a balmy summer night in December 1979, two 9 year old best friends, and a dad watching Alien at the Starlight Twin Drive-in at Aspley in Brisbane. An electrical storm was all around us shooting BALL lightning across the sky. That added an extra creepy dimension to Alien, an experience I’ll never forget. It was months before i could sleep with the light off again.
That is AWESOME!!! I had a similar experience watch The Crow. A lightning storm was moving in and added a lot to the movie. Sadly that was the last movie I saw at that drive in. It was torn down that summer.
OMGosh! LOVE your story! Reminds me of me taking my daughter to see the original Jurassic Park at the drive in. The grass had just been cut, the trees behind the screen were blowing in the wind - then the scene with the T-Rex came and it made us feel like we were there. My daughter - who always LOVED these kinds of movies looked over at me and said, "Just pretend right daddy?" I said, "Yes dear, just pretend". Because of Covid and the lack of movies last year that same drive-in played Jurassic Park again and we were able to repeat our trip again so many years later. Thanks for sharing your story! LOVE IT!
What a beautiful nostalgiacave! I saw Alien for the first time as six year old, in 1987, when mum wasn't home and dad with his friends wanted to drink beer without me buzzing around, so they put me in front of the tv, and put Alien in the vcr. Naturally, I sat right there transfixed for 100 minutes. Ash scared me more than the xenomorph, because a monster I could understand, but this fake human thing I could not.
I was an usher in Chicago at the time Alien came out. I would go in the back of the theater at certain given moments in the movie that I was aware of to watch the audience's reaction to them. it was like a wave of people's bodies jerking back from the screen. I throughly enjoyed those times. It was funny seeing this unison of the whole auditorium attendance move in one direction. P.S. So, Minty, you have your own video store shelve displays with vintage video tapes. Right on, dude! Talk about nostalgia. Keep up the good work. Hoping one day you'll do "Dragonslayer" and "Young Sherlock Holmes".
@@FanboysTrivia Your welcome. It was great watching an iconic film from its very start, and now 43 years later and it still looks incredible. I was quit lucky living in a time when there was one great film after another - The Thing (which I was one of the few who thought it was great back then), Superman, Jaws, Back to the Future, Aliens, Terminator, Blade Runner, Star Wars, Raider's of the Lost Ark to name a few. What a great time in cinema.
I was 11 when this came out and scared the 💩 out of me. I’m 54 and I’d say it’s still one of the scariest movies ever made. Thank you for your awesome channel.
When I was a kid in the 80s I went to a yard sale and found Dan Obannon's novelization hardcover and bought it for $1. It's awesome, still in great condition, too. 🖤
The works of H.R. Giger are beautifully unsettling. Alejandro Jodorowsky's Dune probably would have flopped at the time, but go on to be a sci-fi masterpiece like Metropolis and 2001.
When I first watched this movie what scared me the most was Ash. I had no idea he was a android and when that milky fluid bursts of him after being pummeled by Parker my mind was warped. Ash still just creeps me out as I watch this film at least once a year. So cold and manipulative with superhuman strength. Willing to sacrifice the entire crew to get the Alien cargo back to the corporation. he admired the creature seeing it as better than human more like him, though we never know if his "thoughts" went beyond his programming
The real monster in the ALIEN franchise is the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, since they'll kill their own employees, just to get a live Xenomorph specimen for their bioweapons division!
@@scottmantooth8785 Could not agree more. I often think people overlook the MCP from Tron as a AI that was already in control of the virtual world but was on his way to controlling the real world. The MCP (no gender of course) already had Dillinger under his thumb with the company none the wiser. Often Skynet is the AI that considered the cinematic standard but se seem to forget the MCP
The first two Alien films remind me of the first two Terminator films in a way: The initial films were both masterclasses in horror, one being sci-fi and the other being sci-fi noir (the first Terminator IS horror, fight me); the second films were also masterclasses but in action. All good but for different reasons. I could praise those four films for days, ugh. When sci-fi is good, it's so damn good.
Totally agree. I always thought of Alien as a horror movie. I’m not a huge fan of Sci-Fi so that’s probably why. Alien came out the year I was born so I actually saw Aliens first. It scared the bejeezus out of me, although I was only 7.
I find Alien to be one of the most beautiful looking films ever made. Blade Runner is another one....and actually, Prometheus is another. The cinematography in all these films is just gorgeous and immersive!
OMGosh I can't agree more. We just made an Alien trivia video over on our channel so we just watched the original again and it soooo holds up after all these years! Alien is how you make movies!
@@kickballjedi Legend was a bomb, and Black Rain did only marginal business. To me, his masterpieces remain Alien and Bladerunner, with Gladiator third.
Hmm never heard it referred to as beautiful.. lol I suppose if you like drooling long headed killing machines. With a very unique twist on interior decorating..
Soooo can't agree more. We're HUGE fans of the Alien franchise. Just re-watched it the other day (to make one of our trivia videos) and it sooo still holds up as GREAT!
I was 9 years old when Alien came out. I had seen Star Wars a few times, but when I saw the trailer for Alien, “In space, no one can hear you scream”, I did NOT want to see it. A while later, when it came on HBO, I did watch it, and I loved it. When they re-released it in theaters a couple of years ago for the 40th anniversary, my wife and I went to see it. It was awesome!
i just wanted to take a minute and just say how much i really enjoy your videos. your delivery, editing, your fantastic endings ("see ya!") just always makes for an enjoyable experience.
You were lucky. Some dude got stabbed by another in a Fla. movie theatre because another took his seat, placed some distance apart due to Covid. I hope everything's back to normal before I go back to my nearest AMC (the Rigel was closer, but went out of business).
Wow! Mark, I think that was the best editing for any of your recent videos. Making the video look like the message is corrupted = genius. And the jump scares were great! Thanks for another great video! Keep ‘em coming!
Totally agree. We just watched it again to make one of our trivia videos and (again) totally agree. This movie should be a MASTER CLASS IN SUSPENSE! Great observation. Can't agree more.
That was the coolest plush I’ve ever seen. Thanks for showing us your collectibles. Random fact: the first DVD I ever saw in this world was I Know What You Did Last Summer. Remember the older paper dvd cases! 🐲🐲
The plush is great. It's hard to get it to stick to your head. The legs are bendable, but I can't get it to stay. Maybe my head is just too big. I used to scare a co-worker at a pervious job with it. Put it on her chair when she stepped away, hung up above her desk, desk drawer, etc. It's a little beat up because the cat I had at the time, named Bishop, would attack it.
Been saving so many videos from my favourite content creators as workout videos. Will catch this one later but you always make great videos. Funny, well researched and when appropriate you give true respect to the individuals and situations. A great balance. Thanks Minty.
This movie holds a special place in my heart. Besides being one of the best movies I’ve ever seen, it was one of the few films that my mom and I saw without any other family members. She liked it a lot, while she kind of hated Star Wars (as SW: A New Hope was known then.) I loved seeing your collection of memorabilia; maybe you could do a video showing more of it?
I remember my Momma telling me about her and my dad going to the movies to see this while she was pregnant with me. She told me that when the alien burst out of Cains chest, she had to waddle as fast as she could to the bathroom cause it freaked her out and made her throw up. She never finished watching the movie until it came out on vhs and we got a vcr in the early 80s, lol.
That’s hilarious! The same thing happened to my ex when she was pregnant with my son. She wanted to go see some scary movie with a nun , she kept freaking out so bad she kept having to run to go pee lol
I am 69 yrs old. When this movie came out it was innovative. No one had made a movie like this before. Ever. We were all shocked by the effects. And nobody on the cast knew what was coming except John Hurt. I’ll never forget the explosion out of his chest. One of the Great Movies . Ever.
Saw this one as a kid in the early 80's on VHS. Been in love with it ever since. One of the best movies of all time. Way too many adults thinks kids are not interested in adult movies or can't handle them. Those silly and fun kids movies are ok but kids want adult content too and know they are far better and more serious movies even as kids. I always did. Not that we watched a lot of non family movies growing up but when we did, I always valued them much more than the silly kids movies.
I love quotes from Aliens. The best ones ever. :D And I did see Alien (not on movie teather though, but video version) when I was 8 years old, and Aliens few years after that. Now I do have huge dvd box where I do have all four Alien movies and extras and of course I do watch the extended versions. :D But again, I am a movie nerd and proud of it. :D
Been entertained by your vids for yrs now, Minty! This was another great vid and the tour of your collection was a great teaser. Would love a slow-mo tour. Very cool, our brother from Down Under! Keep doing what you're doing and thank you!
Very good review. Yes, word-of- mouth back in May 1979 was "...don't miss this." I attended one of the very first showings with my girlfriend at the Bay Shore Theater, Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco. The line wrapped around the block. When the Alien creature burst from the chest, about 6-8 women shrieked and fled the theater as if their hair were on fire. Other theaters reported similar reactions. 20th Century Fox knew they had hit a home run. BTW, I became a fan of Yaphet Kotto (RIP) due to his presence in "Blue Collar"(1978) along with Harvey Kettle and Richard Pryor, filmed in Kalamazoo, Michigan at the Checker Cab factory. Another top movie buy Paul Schraeder.
We can see the love you put into your collection just as we can hear it in how you always break down the behind the scenes shenanigans with more humor than bitterness.😎👍
As much as I love the boldness of deciding to kill off the lead character at the end of Alien, I prefer the ending we got. I also can't believe that the better ending was the idea of a studio. Normally studio give nothing but bad ideas that ruin movies.
Same. I heard one part of the everyone dies ending, is that the alien after killing Ripley would speak with a human voice into the communications mic. That would have sent the franchise into a totally different direction.
Yes this movie was a great film and it came out in a good year, the year I was born!!!! Yehhh..... and it came out a month before I was born! Love the special effects as well! Great job Mr. Minty!
Fun fact: a high school in New Jersey created and performed an adaptation of Alien as a play! The entire show got filmed and put on UA-cam but it may have been removed. Anyway, Alien and Aliens are two of my fav movies of all time
That was my high school North Bergen NJ. That was like 5yrs ago or so....i was long out of h.s. in thr 90s and surprised Sigorney Weaver showed up. That was news to everyone in my hometown! I saw it when it hit youtube and surprised how good it was!
OHGosh! I found it! Here's the link peeps! ua-cam.com/video/DX3VaFG7AvU/v-deo.html (Not spamming - I have no affliation - just thought others would want to see it too!)
I LOVED the movie Dark Star. That movie is HILARIOUS. The main scene with the beach ball alien where it beats the Hairy guy in the head with a broomstick had me in stitches. I was 12 years old in 1979 and thought it was so cool that my mother would let me go see the Dark Star movie because I saw it as a "grown up" movie and I didn't want to see Alien because the trailer played on TV back then scared the daylights out of me. There was a sound played during the Alien trailer that terrified me. It sounded like the synthesizer version of an alien screaming. Now it's just funny to me. So the Dark Star movie was more what I wanted to see because of it being a comedy. As always, Minty, your presentation is excellent and I always enjoy your videos. 😁👌
I liked the walkthrough of your Alien stuff, but what about a full tour? You have some really cool and unique stuff there. Stuff I didn't even know existed. It's a really fun set up. Love the Blockbuster vibe! Great vid today too!
I like you showing off your collection of the memorabilia related to the movie you're reviewing. Please continue to use this bit in future videos where appropriate.
When Kane gets jumped by a face hugger he is clearly wearing his helmet and a sizzling sound is heard the same sound as their acid blood. Later his helmet is seen melted implying the face huggers can use acid at will to get to their victims. A truly terrifying aspect of the aliens that to my knowledge is never seen again.
I've been waiting and checking for a new Minty vid and here it is.. Alien one of my favourite films, lost count how many times I've watched this, nice one Minty 👍
I was 11 when my parents to me to see Alien. Back then some parents (especially mine!!) weren’t very good at picking family friendly movies. Alien wasn’t the first horror film I saw as a little kid . I remember very clearly not being able to sleep well because I kept “seeing” the Alien in the dark shadows of my room at night 😳😰. My parents got what they deserved because I’d often sobbingly crawl into bed with them until I was 13. On the flip side, they also took me to see STAR WARS in ‘77 and I’ve been a geek ever since 🤓 At 9 yrs old I decided that some day I’d name my son Luke. My son Luke is 27 now 😏lol *You incorrectly said little figurine was of Ash when alien came out of his stomach - it was Kane. Come on!! Lol
Perfect presentation Minty. Thank YOU. Really wonderfully done, laid out, and shown all those hidden facts that I never knew about. Fun and really cool! Thanks! SammyC
I remember watching Alien with my best friend, during the VHS era in his home. Aliens had already been released, which as a 13-year-old I’d seen at the movies. Anyway, I remember how scared I was with Aliens, I thought, Alien can’t be any “worse”. Oh how wrong I was! One of my all-time favourite movies.
Sooo totally agree. We recently re-watched it to make a trivia video for it and it soooo holds up! This movie should honestly be a master class in suspense!
I first saw Alien at my cousins house on TV when I was 5 or 6 years old. We saw the movie at my cousins house in Los Angeles, California before we went to Universal Studios Hollywood
I'm not gonna lie. We can all agree that the Alien franchise (like Terminator) ended with the 2nd installment, Aliens. Whenever I see the Alien franchise, I always question myself: "Why would they continue the franchise even though the story is already wrapped up with Ellen Ripley destroying the Alien species in Aliens?"
On the other hand, if you think about it, the eggs were in a ship, NOT driven by a Xenomorph, that crashed on the planet. So it was logical to assume there were other ships with these eggs, around the galaxy. They hardly destroyed the species but rather this colony.
Totally agree. I'll say the answer is because we sooo loved the first two that we wanted more. Then we got Alien3 and were like, "Uh...ok? Well at least we got to go back to the "Alien Universe" again." Then we got or whatever it was called. We still wanted more but it just wasn't good. Now we just want another movie like the 2nd part so we can leave that universe happy... Still waiting...
I was twelve when it came out and I was fascinated by the Trailer which drag me to the movie itself, needless to say I didn't sleep for months but, at the same time, it made me fall in love with this masterpiece. To this day I lost count of how many times I have watched this film in theaters, on VHS, DVD and TV reruns but it's just like an addiction, I can't resist. My three top movies of all times are Joung Frankenstein, Jaws and Alien which I watch each one at least once a year, I am truly starting to think I'm sick in some way.
I loved Alien and Aliens as a kid. I saw them when I was 8 or 9 and fell in love. I never found it scary like a supernatural spirits and horror. Im a baby when it comes to those kinds of movies, but Alien and Aliens I was totally down with for some reason.
Great movie and great list of 'things you didn't know'. Really, some were definitely new to me! And then came Aliens...another hit. I got to see that with 72 mm film on a big screen (it was huge for the time).
I'm 46 years old and even now Giger's Alien haunts my dreams. Even last night of an uneasy sleep I still dreamt of the creature hunting me. I outwitted it, but it still lurks on my subconscious.
If you haven't yet, you should do one on O'Bannon's directorial debut (I think) The Return of the Living Dead! A great underrated zombie movie IMO! Nice work as always Minty! My Dad bought me that 18" Alien figure (I was 7 yrs old) - it was awesome! Wish I would have kept it - probably worth some money now!
@@jean-mi1825 I say underrated for the fact that it isn't brought up when classic zombie movies are mentioned. I think its a classic, but also underrated - IMO
I vividly remember sitting in the theater as a 17 year old and jumping for the first time in my life instead of laughing at the monster reveal. A truly riveting, low key, movie.
Gosh I was around 7 or 8 when this was released in theaters. It eventually came on HBO and my parents sat down to watch it one evening. (They aren't even big on Sci fi). Since Star Wars grabbed my imagination (& gave me nightmares) at 4 or 5 years old... I REALLY wanted to see Alien on HBO with them. It was rated R. I remember them talking about whether I could see it or not. I hung around until about 20 minutes. When that face hugger got Kane... I leaped up from the couch and ran to my room. My parents laughing as I ran! 🤣 When I was a little older I rewatched it myself and was simply drawn into the movie by it's darkness and atmosphere. Kids today don't understand how atmospheric cinema helps pull you into a movie and consider it a slow or boring movie. Today I have every (6) Alien movie on DVD or Blu Ray... and enjoy every one of them even the bad ones.
Soo can't agree more. This movie should be a master class in how to make movies. It's soooo freaking good. We just rewatched it ourselves (to make a trivia video) and it sooo holds up even today! Sooo freaking good!
@@FanboysTrivia Yup! Let my 13 year old see it a few months ago. He was hugging on to his pillow throughout the whole movie! Not sure he liked it or not.... but we watch Doughtery's 2015 Krampus every Christmas together... (another movie I like for it's atmosphere... even if it doesn't make complete sense!) "BEAR!!!! BEAR!!!"
Thanks a lot, great video! Loved the part with the pizza guy and the facehugger :)))) Amazing movie, the best ever for me. A movie you can rewatch maaaaaaany times and still feel fresh. Not many movies can deliver that feeling. So many details, so much hard work was invested, just amazing. The music and sound effects are fitting perfect with the visuals. Your collection is amazing by the way, superbe! And you said some really great things about the movie, all true. Thanks again for the video! Respect!
I really wanted one of those 18" Alien figures, but as I recall, they were expensive and hard to find. As I was only 12 at the time, I didn't have the money to buy it myself and my parents either deemed it too expensive or couldn't find one when Christmas rolled around. I do have the Kenner Scorpion Alien (I thought it was the only one that didn't look silly) as well as their Alien vs. Predator 2-pack. Strangely, the alien figure in that pack is dark green, but if you got the same figure separately, it was light blue! From McFarlane's Movie Maniacs series, I have the Warrior Alien from Aliens as well as the Aliens vs. Predator box set. I never got the individual original Alien figure, but it's the same as the one in the box set. Nor did I ever get any of the figures from Alien Resurrection or AvP, as I really didn't care for their designs. Some of the later figures from other companies look great, but I'm not going to pay $30-40 for an action figure. I have the Alien model kit from MPC, although I just slapped the pieces together and didn't spend any time "finishing" it. One of the arms is broken off now. And I have the novelization of the movie by Alan Dean Foster. I got it through the school book club, so it's likely been somewhat censored. Oh, and I also have a majority of the trading cards, although I never managed to get a full set in any of the series I was collecting.
LOVE IT! Thanks for sharing the story of your Alien fandom! I recently found an old Alien figure with the xenomorph egg at a flee market. Lost my freaking mind I was so happy! Paid like $3 bucks for it! Wonder how much it's worth? Hmmmm....
When this came out, in 1979, I was 10 years old. I went to the little movie theatre in my little home town to see it. At that time (and in that town) they didn't care how old you were. In fact, the girl that worked the ticket booth was a friend of my older sister. Anyway, there was nothing else to do in town, so every weekend my friend Keith and I would go see whatever was playing. I made it to the chest burster scene and that was enough for me. I was way too young to be watching it and it scared me pretty badly. I had trouble sleeping for weeks after that. Anyway, I left the theatre after that scene and went home. I didn't see the rest of the movie until it came out on video years later. Great film!
Fantastic video about one of the greatest sci-fi classics Minty 😎👍 Alien is one of my favourite films of all time, one of Ridley Scott’s best films. Along with the terrifying alien creature, Ripley is my favourite character in the film.
I talked my dad into taking me to see this when it came out. I was 13, and it was probably the scariest movie I have ever seen in a theater to this day. One little bit of trivia, John Hurt redid the chestburster scene, minus the blood of course, in "Spaceballs". If I remember right Mel Brooks had a hard time convincing him to do it.
@@v-town1980 I doubt "everyone" has even seen it, much less pick out John Hurt in a short scene that's all lookalikes besides him. That's over 7 billion people worldwide.
Great video. Your video store and memorabilia are awesome. My parents took me to see Alien when I was young and is my second favorite movie behind Star Wars.
Great video, Minty - a lot I wasn't aware of. It's also worth mentioning that the 1958 scifi/horror film It! The Terror From Beyond Space was a definite inspiration for Alien. It has a very similar plot, and the alien is even killed at the end in a very similar manner in both films.
I was probably 9 or 10 first time seeing alien and her underwear bugged me the fuck out. It still bugs me out haha. Not sure how they are even comfortable to be wearing lol
OP this is a very nice documentary that helps me relive the great experience of watching Alien all over again! I especially like the production details, observations and articles about the actors, the director and all the interesting details about how and why it got made.
I remember seeing this movie after watching ALIENS. The scene where the xenomorph creeps down through the chains was very chilling. Ironically, this film came out around the day I was born.
Excellent review, Minty. I was 15 when Alien came out but since it R rated I couldn't see it without my parents, neither of whom wanted to see it. My mom even drove me to the theater and asked the manager if she could simply give permission for me to see it and was told no, she had to be with me. Stupid rules. I never got to see it until it came out on home video years later.
Same story here, but my friend's mom drove back to the theater and they allowed her to buy our tickets and go back home. We enjoyed the best theater experience we'd ever had and even witnessed a girl puking into her hands as she ran out of the room when Ash gets his head knocked off. This happened in small town Loveland Colorado. Boy do I miss that theater.
my mom took me to the movies when i was 7, she thought we were going to see close encounters of the 3rd kind. boy, she was wrong....scared the shit out of me, and gave me a life long love of sci fi. Thanks Minty, this one was great!!!
The most surprising is that your mum let you watch it to the end.
i wasn't that much older when i saw it for the first time but it didn't phase me in the slightest
My mother took me to see Aliens, in the theatre, when I was 6! (1986). I know how you feel! Scared the ever living shit outta me, and made me a life long ALIEN/Sci Fi fan. Thanks Mom!

😂😂🤣🤣😂😂
Whoa that is hilarious an honest to goodness jump scare
Great presentation but a truly golden nugget of trivia was overlooked. "Alien" was shooting at Shepperton Studios the same time as The Who were on a neighboring soundstage filming live performances of "Baba O'Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again" for their documentary feature, "The Kids Are Alright" (1979). The "Alien" crew wound up borrowing the band's laser beam-splitter for the bowels of the derelict craft (where Kane becomes impregnated). The laser served as the electronic "thin layer of mist" blanketing the alien egg farm.
Thanks IMDB...
Too cool !!! Thanks for sharing
The figure with the red hole is Kane not Ash😀
Thought everyone knew this.
I'm surprised nobody ever mentions it. It turns out the distress signal was just The Who all along.
Maybe the best merging of sci-fi and horror ever. Still in my all-time top 5. Perfect casting, perfect SFX, perfect mood/set pieces.
We so agree. We recently made an Alien trivia video over on our channel so we just re-watched it and it still soooo holds up! Such a great film then AND NOW! Easily one of our favorites!
It set the bar.
It’s crazy that this movie is more than 40 years old! The special effects still look amazing to this day!
the chest burst is still so effective today that it still freaks people out who have never seen it before
Yeah, I've noticed that well done practical effects seem to age really well
They are amazing, because everything is real; that is, physically real. No computers graphics.
Not like CGI, especially “old” cgi from 10-15 yrs ago looks way more dated
The power of practical special effects!
This movie is flawless. Absolutely classic
Along with John Carpenter's The THING, ALIEN is one of the best Lovecraftian movies ever made. It goes above and beyond meeting all the necessary elements required for telling the best possible "weird tale".
He did leave out a detail about the alternate ending: after killing Ripley, the alien gets on the radio and speaks in her voice
@@Viking_Luchador Where can i read moře about this? O.o
Well said 👏👏👏
@@Viking_Luchador I’ve heard about that. That may have been sort of shocking considering that the alien would have acted pretty much like an animal with no higher level intelligence throughout the entire movie up until that point……or it could have been incredibly stupid.
In terms of sci-fi/horror nothing comes close to The Thing or Alien. Either answer for 'best of' is acceptable imo.
I never clicked on a video so fast. The Alien franchise is by far the best sci-fi horror creature feature. For me this is not just a film but a piece of art.
To me that only involes Alien, Aliens and Alien: Isolation

I love getting a new Minty video during my morning dump at work. Thank you sir.
Lol I'm doing the same right now! My bowel bro
Never take a dump on your own time.
I was 11 in 1979 and my mom took me and my brother to this. Such a great film. Great work on this one!
I initially (in 1979, also age 11) didn't even really hear the opening titles music because, we were all too terrified already to pay attention to it!
Ahhhh, the time when parents were cool!
Oh, MAN!! That does sound awesome! I can picture it! Thanks for sharing.
Ms. Weaver did an outstanding job as Ripley. Such a great character!
LOVED your story! Thanks for sharing!
I got to do the same for the movie Jaws. Seeing the "wave" was priceless!
Exactly!!! And after the jump scare everyone would exhale and some pockets of nervous laughter would break the silence. It was contagious
I was 11 when this came out and scared the 💩 out of me. I’m 54 and I’d say it’s still one of the scariest movies ever made. Thank you for your awesome channel.
Its kinda realistic a still holds up today!
I like it when you show your stuff related to the movie you are talking about
When I was a kid in the 80s I went to a yard sale and found Dan Obannon's novelization hardcover and bought it for $1. It's awesome, still in great condition, too. 🖤
O' Bannon didn't write the novelization, Alan Dean Foster did. I have it too.
Whos Dan obannon??
Give ya $10 for it!? (Jokes! Enjoy!)
Great video, Minty!
You manage to give a perfect and concise chronological overview of the production and impact of this classic.
Impeccable!
You can't deny that Ian Holm's deadpan, somber, creepy voice really makes that character work.
The real monster in the ALIEN franchise is the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, since they'll kill their own employees, just to get a live Xenomorph specimen for their bioweapons division!
*the danger/concerns about AI is that by the time you notice it has becoming sentient it's already too late to stop it*
@@scottmantooth8785 Could not agree more.
Totally agree. I remember being a kid - and you know the Alien was dangerous but then freaking Ash goes nuts! What the @I*#*!? So can't agree more.
James Cameron at his peak, helps out a lot too, before he went a bit nuts with his Avatar hype.
True dat.
Totally agree. I always thought of Alien as a horror movie. I’m not a huge fan of Sci-Fi so that’s probably why. Alien came out the year I was born so I actually saw Aliens first. It scared the bejeezus out of me, although I was only 7.
@@go4brookle761 same here

Fight me if you disagree.
That's cause Ridley was an ART DIRECTOR, first. That's why all of his films are so visually stunning.
Check out Legend (with Tom Cruise) and Black Rain (with Michael Douglas). 2 more examples of Scott's visual brilliance.
@@kickballjedi
Legend was a bomb, and Black Rain did only marginal business. To me, his masterpieces remain Alien and Bladerunner, with Gladiator third.
Hmm never heard it referred to as beautiful.. lol I suppose if you like drooling long headed killing machines. With a very unique twist on interior decorating..
One of the greatest horror movies ever made IMO.
Good horror films take themselves seriously and star talented actors.
Alien and Event Horizon.
Greatest horror AND scifi imo

Soooo can't agree more. We're HUGE fans of the Alien franchise. Just re-watched it the other day (to make one of our trivia videos) and it sooo still holds up as GREAT!
I was 9 years old when Alien came out. I had seen Star Wars a few times, but when I saw the trailer for Alien, “In space, no one can hear you scream”, I did NOT want to see it. A while later, when it came on HBO, I did watch it, and I loved it. When they re-released it in theaters a couple of years ago for the 40th anniversary, my wife and I went to see it. It was awesome!
you must be my age. i too was 9 when alien came out.
i just wanted to take a minute and just say how much i really enjoy your videos. your delivery, editing, your fantastic endings ("see ya!") just always makes for an enjoyable experience.
That's one thing about the movie Alien it's all about the suspense. That's what make such an excellent movie.
Totally agree. We just watched it again to make one of our trivia videos and (again) totally agree. This movie should be a MASTER CLASS IN SUSPENSE! Great observation. Can't agree more.
There is nothing in the movie that makes it seem dated. Not the sets, the clothing or hairstyles. That's what makes it timeless.
Excellent job as always. It was a pleasure to interview you!
Absolutely great movie and definitely one of my all time favorite. Such a classic!!!
Timeless work of art!
I am 69 yrs old. When this movie came out it was innovative. No one had made a movie like this before. Ever. We were all shocked by the effects. And nobody on the cast knew what was coming except John Hurt. I’ll never forget the explosion out of his chest. One of the Great Movies . Ever.
My parents went to see this when it first came out. My dad said this was the only movie that scared the monkey outta him. He loved it.
Is this gonna be a stand-up fight, sir, or another bug hunt? Hudson. (Aliens 1986).
That mini video store in your home is one of the coolest things I have ever seen someone do with a space in their home. It was just amazing!
Great to see another wonderful movie clip up :)
Dude, this may not mean much, but you helped me through a divorce.
How ? Did you burn your ex with a flamethrower shouting "get away from me, you B*tch" ?
The fact it let "Aliens" happen is also absolutely fantastic, as those two movies are both perfect together, regardless of the rest that followed
Yes this movie was a great film and it came out in a good year, the year
I was born!!!! Yehhh..... and it came out a month before I was born!
Love the special effects as well!
Great job Mr. Minty!
The "haunted house in space" is more appropriate for Event Horizon, as far as I'm concerned.
Still, another great and informative video.

My favorite movie of all time, thank you for covering Alien.
I liked the walkthrough of your Alien stuff, but what about a full tour? You have some really cool and unique stuff there. Stuff I didn't even know existed. It's a really fun set up. Love the Blockbuster vibe! Great vid today too!
👏👍👏 Always Great Minty!!
Ripely is the heart of the film. It’s the thing that keeps the audience from feeling “betrayed” at the end. She has to live.
I can't believe how committed you are to these movies.
It's freaking awesome!!!
Love your videos! Keep up the good work 👍
I've been waiting and checking for a new Minty vid and here it is..
My son Luke is 27 now 😏lol
*You incorrectly said little figurine was of Ash when alien came out of his stomach - it was Kane. Come on!! Lol

I remember watching Alien with my best friend, during the VHS era in his home. Aliens had already been released, which as a 13-year-old I’d seen at the movies. Anyway, I remember how scared I was with Aliens, I thought, Alien can’t be any “worse”. Oh how wrong I was!

Lol! They burned down the space jockey prop because they thought it was “The Devil!”?
Only here in ‘Murica!
Great job, Minty!
@@jean-mi1825 True.
Hicks and Newt died - so there was an alien on board with them all.
Since the Assembly cut of Alien 3 is my favorite film in the franchise, I disagree with you
Totally agree.

Minty you are truly a gem! Thank you for covering one of my favourite films with such enthusiasm and appreciation! Cheers!

Hmmmm....
@@FanboysTrivia It depends. Who made it?
You did an EXCELLENT JOB TALKING ABOUT THIS FILM. IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITE SCI-FI MOVIES A CLASSIC
damn never got in so early. im literally the second viewing. nice. love the reviews minty
Great film!
10 Things You Didn't Know About Screamers (1995)
"Oh no...not again"
Trivia? Doesn't everyone know that?
@@v-town1980 Surprisingly, not everyone does (one of my co-workers, who's a huge Spaceballs fan, didn't know until I told him).
I'm shocked, this time around he didn't include a lot of facts about the making of the special effects and animatronics
probably saving it for a '10 more things' video
Great video, Minty - a lot I wasn't aware of. It's also worth mentioning that the 1958 scifi/horror film It! The Terror From Beyond Space was a definite inspiration for Alien. It has a very similar plot, and the alien is even killed at the end in a very similar manner in both films.
Comedy or not, I've always thought Ripley's panties were hilarious!! {0.o} 🤣
I was probably 9 or 10 first time seeing alien and her underwear bugged me the fuck out. It still bugs me out haha. Not sure how they are even comfortable to be wearing lol
Love it! No CG bullsh*t … just great imagination + movie magic
some cg*
The greatest movie monster design of all time.
I personally prefer the Predator's designs
What about Brie Larson in Captain Marvel?
The thought of having a conversation with that monster is truly terrifying.....
OP this is a very nice documentary that helps me relive the great experience of watching Alien all over again! I especially like the production details, observations and articles about the actors, the director and all the interesting details about how and why it got made.
Sigourney Weaver is brilliant as Ripley. 😀👍👽
The most badass female character ever written!
@@linda10989 that's right. 😀👍👽
@@jamesmoss3424 Sarah Conner would be second, imo
LOVE THIS! We just did some Alien Trivia on our channel so this was a GREAT find for us! Keep up the great work!
