I have been addicted to your channel I don’t know why. I just love movies. Bill Paxton is the only person who can be in a movie. And steal the show in 15 minutes. But rest in peace Bill Paxton he will always be missed.
Has Paxton ever not been one of the greatest character actors of all time? He became his characters at a performance level few can do, let alone so consistently and esp with such a natural and causal ease.
Hey Minty, love this video and the rest of them. I live and work in Norman, Oklahoma at the National Weather Center. In the lobby we have "Dorothy" and other weather observation equipment on display. Our small eatery here is also called The Flying Cow. Just thought you'd like to know. Keep up the great work!!
Hi, neighbor! I work as a grad student in the geophysics department at sarkeys energy center - I had no idea until you commented that The Flying Cow is referenced from this movie😂 Too cool!
I bought VH - Best of Vol 1 just for "Humans Being" because I was using it in a video at my school, but I've listened to that album at least 10x more than any album I've ever owned in my life so far, including the two-disc Rush collection I've forgotten the name of. Case-in-point, I fell back in love with the VH album when I listened to it on a Bose CD player I was repairing in 2009. I was listening through some great headphones I picked up in 2003 (Sennheiser HD480) and it blew my mind all over again, hearing it through something better than my worn-out 1984 car stereo or weaksauce 1994 GPX CD system in high school.
@David Buswa ummm no it wasn't the last 3 songs Sammy did with VH were It's about time, Up for breakfast and Learning to see on the 2004 greatest hits Best of Both Worlds.
Technically the first "movie" released on DVD was a porno. The first "motion picture feature film" was Twister. Also, I suspect more people released while watching the porno, but I digress.
@trishdadish82 I did to. Actually my whole 8th grade class went on a field trip to a small one room theater in my small hometown. After the movie we went to the park to have lunch. My first serious gf was there also and I think the theme song from twister became one of "our" song lol. Geez I miss being a kid lol
Older and 1 younger brother went to see it in the theatres and walked out with tornado sirens going off in Southern Minnesota. Tornado ef1 touched down in a field just north of fairmont. Good times
I have a few additional facts to add about the film,Twister. As someone from Oklahoma, I’m very happy that this film was made to allow others to see what we experience every year in the Spring, however tornadoes can happen thru out the year, if the conditions are right. I have even seen a pea green sky when I was 14, when a tornado destroyed a nearby town of Union City! Here’s some more interesting facts! 1) The field project sponsored by NOAA and University of Oklahoma did exist under the name TOTO (TOtable TOrnado observatory) This took place during our tornado seasons from 1981-1984. Unfortunately it wasn’t as successful as it was in the film! 2) The town Wakita 24 months prior to filming the movie had grapefruit sized hail, which is believed why it was chosen for the film! 3) The farm that survived the tornado at the end of the movie was actually wiped out by a tornado in 2010. 4) Bill Paxton’s thoughts on a more intense Twister film would have definitely been something to see due to he grew up in Ft. Worth, Texas, which is also in Tornado Alley. I’m sure he experienced going down in the cellar a time or two and saw a tornado’s aftermath first hand. 5) We actually experienced a tornado of that magnitude on May 3 and 4th of the year 1999. Multiple supercell thunderstorms on those two days created 72 tornadoes, which killed 40 people and left 3,300 families homeless! The strongest was an EF-5 that developed by the city of Chickasha. It went thru many towns and cities leaving utter destruction before it dissipated back to the sky. It left a path of devastation for miles and miles, which our governor called for a state of emergency that required the National Guard to be called to protect the damaged neighborhoods from looters. There were many people that had severe injuries, such as a woman that was scalped, but they have recovered and are walking miracles! We have since rebuilt and have actually grown, but anyone who was alive and living in Oklahoma on those days can tell you what they were doing at that time. I hope that my additional facts were of interest to your viewers.
Cameron Fry: "God Meg, that's a lot of Beef.. Where'd you get all this Beef? Meg: " Did you see my cows out front?" Cameron Fry: "No" Aunt Meg: "Ah, Oha"
Repeating food again and again has the effect of mulling any argument as its is said in a manner that trumps any aurgument against it....and/or the chanting indicates ones unwavering dedication to whatever is being chanted.
They were demanding food and it appears that in the past they had the tendency to invade Joe's aunt's house to eat. She was "trying" to tell them NO, but she lost and they all crashed in for food and showers
I remember reading that in 1996 that they were showing Twister at a mid-west drive in, and during the drive-in scene an actual tornado tore through the screen. How is that for 3D!
It was summer 1997 at the drive in movie in McAlister Oklahoma. It wasn't a large tornado but it blew the screen askew. The real freaky thing was, it happened right during the scene where they were at the drive in movie! Maybe it happened somewhere else too, but I sure remember this one!
actually the movie helped me understand the meaning of tailgating. When I went to a college in US, people used to tail gate a lot and I never understood the meaning or as to why it was called tail gate. But in the movie Bill Paxton said to Helent Hent, open the tail gate. That is the gate at the back of truck. So I understood the meaning of tail gate. Its called tail gate because people used to drive these trucks to campus and open the tail gates and drank the beer and ate the food kept at the back of the truck. Great.
I always thought the relationship was a good narrative to tie the film together. You have to have something for a story aside from just chasing tornados. The whole group really got on well, great on screen comraderie.
You should talk about how Van Halen created two great songs for this movie. "Human Beings" and "Respect the Wind" which is played on the ending credits. Eddie really created a masterpiece with that last song. RIP Eddie
The movie was fine on its own, but that soundtrack really hit the spot. Part of me wishes there had been a mix of the Van Halen track “Humans Being” which included the score leading into the sequence when we first hear it. Not to mention, the instrumental that Eddie and Alex assembled for the closing credits, “Respect the Wind”, always sent chills up my spine.
Well, Jan de Bont IS a great cinemtatographer himself - he shot *"Die Hard"* and *"The Hunt For Red October"* for John McTiernan, *"Black Rain"* for Ridley Scott, *"Lethal Weapon 3"* for Richard Donner, *"Flatliners"* for Joel Schumaucher, and *"Flesh+Blood"* and *"Basic Instinct"* for Paul Verhoeven.
@8:20 as a real storm chaser I always loved the attention to detail here with the giant wedge shaped tornado as they were attentive enough to include the rotating wall cloud/mesocyclone of the parent storm that is often seen with real supercell thunderstorms with strong long tracked tornadoes.
Nope Nope Someone made a comment about not understanding why this part was in the movie. Was just explaining to them why it was in there in the first place.
Night of the Twisters is an adaptation of a kids book aimed at 8-13 year olds. The book was great when I read it and the movie was a faithful adaptation. I'm sure the success of Twister helped bring the movie version about.
I knew about him but didn't know about his co-star Hoffman also died fairly recently. My good friend also died of the same circumstances that same year so I probably didn't register it.
All Sharknado needed was a shark hunter with an Ahab-complex that could also instinctively read a sharknado's next move and who was in the middle of getting divorced to marry a therapist that had been helping him get over his Navy days' PTSD that revolved around a story about a shark that he saw, "miss this guy and miss that guy and come right after you (him!)"
This movie along with Independence Day, Daylight, Volcano, The Day After Tomorrow, Armageddon and Deep Impact are my favourite disaster movies. Plus the last good Jan de Bont film.
All true HollyWeird movies that use special effects and are notoriously inaccurate. Much like the "news"....they're called leftists since they can't get anything right !
I liked Dante's Peak a lot better than Volcano. I always enjoyed disaster films over the years, starting with Earthquake! and the Irwin Allen disaster films. The last good one was The Day After Tomorrow. After that, they started getting tiresome as we'd seen everything with top notch effects. Sure, 2012 had some incredible visuals, but the story was so bad and practically non-existent, and it was a chore to sit through. San Andreas, that movie about a satellite disrupting weather, and others since just no longer hold any interest...they all have a been there done that feel to them.
@@ITILII , we don't go to these kinds of movies for real life science. No need to inject political junk into the discussion. I mean, The Day After Tomorrow did not cause me to suddenly accept Global Warming! It is just a make-believe movie.
I rememer TO.T.O. TOtable Tornado Observatory - looked just like the movie version but smaller. -- I remember thinking about Quint from jaws.. ..you bring the cage to the storm... put the cage in the storm, the twister is in the storm.. farewell and ado you sweet Spanish lady farewell and a do the ladies of Spain for we've received orders to sail back to old England. And we may ne'er see you fair ladies again--
it was one of the first, yes. Also featuring FULLRATE DTS. Something that many DVDs later didn't have anymore. Some other early titles who had it were "Daylight", "Liar Liar" and "Dante's Peak".
Michael Lee As a kid living in Osage county, I spent a lot of nights in my grandparent’s cellar. (I’m 66) We would run around opening windows & unplugging everything. Then down in the cellar while grandpa stood outside & watched till the last minute. Now, when the siren goes off I walk out on the porch & look up.
Just an interesting note about Crichton's wife, Anne-Marie Martin. She played detective Dori Doro an the tv series Sledge Hammer from '86-'88. It was a hilarious show about a nihilistic cop that talked to his gun. The show was kind of a spoof of Dirty harry,. Minty, you should check it out.
So here's a small story. I remember watching the Drive in scene with my parents and asking what movie they were watching. They told me all about The Shining, and how scary it was. All I wanted to do was watch that next but i wasn't old enough I guess. But when I finally did, that began my interest in the horror genre! Thanks to Twister 😁
Here's another "Thing You Didn't Know" - the idea for the scene where a tornado demolishes a drive-in movie theater was taken from a real life event. In Southwestern Pennsylvania, there was a drive-In called Spotlight 88. On Friday, May 31, 1985 an F3 tornado (the Enhanced Fujita scale wasn't in effect yet) ripped through it and destroyed it. Nobody was there at the time, but many reporters morbidly predicted how bad it could have been if it had happened just a few hours later when the screens were open.
I live in Mt. Orab Ohio and when I was a very young kid about 4 years old we had a twister go thru our hometown drive in called The Lake drive in and destroyed the entire thing. The remnant were still there up until about 2 years ago when they finished demolishing it to build a really reception hall. As kids we used to sneak into the old drive in and spray paint the walls in the concession booth. Or we'd sneak back there and smoke cigs or have a make out session with our girls.
I lived through the tornado in 1985. I was 10. It destroyed a small town outside of Erie Pennsylvania called Albion, another small town called Hermitage and East Kane was wiped out. There is still a path in the Allegheny National Forest where the tornado cut through. This is when I became obsessed with storms.
I love this movie. RIP, Bill Paxton and Philip Seymour Hoffman. The only thing I really have against this movie is the last sequence when they’re running from the F5 and they strap themselves down. As far as I know, that never would’ve worked in real life. Tornadoes produce incredibly strong winds, and those winds only increase in severity as you go higher on the scale. The wind speeds involved for an F5 are out of this world, and they’d have been killed very quickly.
As for the prank bugs... Coat them with a very light coating of Vaseline to make them look a little more real. When my wife & I got to see Twister we drove home through a massive North Texas thunderstorm. It was so bad that folks were pulling off the highway. I was going to pull off and go to a gas station except when I did... It was no longer there. A tornado ate it. Lake Dallas REALLY got hammered that night.
Twister was a very significant film & a classic must see from the 90s because it really depicted the damage & devastation Twisters cause to anyrjing that is in their way to a worldwide audience, for that reason alone it is a very important film. Much like Pierce Brosnan's Volcanic Eruption film around the same year or a year later called "Dante's Peak" where he plays a Volcanologist. Another significant film that opened the world's eyes to what can happen when a Super Volcanic eruption takes place, everything within miles is Obliterated.
You should do one on "Bird on a Wire." PS) My favorite part of this movie was the quirky eccentricity of Paxton's team of storm chasers. They're a bunch of badass science nerds, and that's not something you see too often in movies.
My wife and loved that movie. We could quote parts of it. She is dead now and the movie holds a special place for me. And BTW, the "food" part was the staff begging to go to her aunts house to eat, since she cooked so well. You saw the movie and don't remember that part? It was right after ".... i'll have to call you back..... we have cows.."

I remember being at the grocery store checkout where the person in line behind me was bitching about how fake the special effects were in Twister saying that the idea of a letter envelope couldn't slice wood and get stuck in it like a saw blade like it was shown in the movie. Then the cashier and I looked at each other like this person was crazy. Then I asked where they were from and they said from British Columbia Canada and then I said, I grew up in Oklahoma and said that in Oklahoma gets tornados a lot and the movie did in fact depict accurate special effects. The casher agreed with me since they grew up in Texas. The look of shock on this person's face was priceless. Thought I should share my Twister movie story.
Sadly there are plenty of ignoramuses in my province. I am always impressed by the power of this planet and would not have made that comment. Us British Columbians understand earthquakes and forest fires pretty well though. Pay attention to what has the best chance of killing you! 😀
to be fair dude, 1996 did have some strong competition that year when talking about sci-fi/action movies!!! similar thing happened 10 years prior, where "Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home", "The Fly" and "Aliens" were nominated for Academy Awards in the Visual Effects/Make-Up/Sound Effects categories. so with that said, while the visual effects for "Twister" are indeed excellent, but the use of both practical and computer effects for "Independence Day" rightfully deserved its Oscar win.
Does anybody even use Redbox anymore? I'm just wondering if all video rentals are obsolete yet. I still see them around but I never see anyone use them.
We got cows!! One of my favourite lines. First time I saw this movie was at a drive in with a double feature with Executive Decision starring Kurt Russell
This is one of my absolute favorite movies of all time. I completely enjoyed it. It made me want to go into meteorology in high school. Respect the wind by van halen in the ending credits was AMAZING.
Night of the twisters is a children’s book. I read it in the late 80s so it’s at least that old. Not a bad book considering I still remember parts of it
This movie was awesome! I am from Oklahoma and I remember film crews in Western and Northern Oklahoma asking for extras. One of my best friends was an extra in the film. The town of Wakita became a big tourist attraction after the twister blew it away. Another good reason for the movie to be set in Oklahoma is that the University of Oklahoma has the top meteorology school in the nation. When I was there in the mid to late 80's, I met people from other nations wanting to study meteorology. And as a journalism major, I got to do a story for our campus newspaper about storm or tornado chasers. I hung out with them for two spring weekends chasing storms (most storm chasers don't get that close to twisters). Thanks, Minty! Keep up the great work.
I got a chance to go on the "ride" at Universal in Florida, also I live in Nebraska and have survived a tornado hit. The movie was good but nothing compared to that.
The "food food food" thing made more sense to me once you mentioned Joss's involvement. Along with the quippy line of "We require sustenance" That's a total Weadon trait. Now that you revealed his involvement so many of the lines that I loved, totally scream Weadon. Watch Buffy again... you'll see it. :)

Digging the new look, Minty! While I would have loved to see Paxton's Jaws-style sequel, the only thing Twister really needed was more Philip Seymour Hoffman!
Twister is still a fav of mine! Amazing effects, storyline, and the acting was so awesome! They all blew their characters away. Some acting can ruin a whole movie but this one is so good. I watch it Everytime it's on CMT or any other channel

This movie was the main event that got me interested in tornadoes as a kid. All other tornadoe movies like sharknadoe went downhill
We really wanted the world to end in the 90s. Everyone was counting down to Y2K and Nostradamus and Batboy everywhere.
Garth Brooks was offered the part of the flying cow....
Mooo. :)
You forgot to mention that “Dorothy” is based on a real storm chaser tech called T.O.T.O. “Toto” get it.🐶
No please explain.
And we may ne'er see you fair ladies again--
Toto was actually a girl dog in The Wizard of Oz.
@@jamessullivan1348 SMH uhmm yeah that is what i was going for...
The band right? Miss the rain down in Aaaaaafricaaaaa
I read somewhere that twister was the first American movie to be put on DVD.
it was one of the first, yes. Also featuring FULLRATE DTS. Something that many DVDs later didn't have anymore. Some other early titles who had it were "Daylight", "Liar Liar" and "Dante's Peak".
That was matrix
One of the earliest released was by Universal, right?
I live in Oklahoma and we are notorious for Our large Tornadoes
Michael Lee As a kid living in Osage county, I spent a lot of nights in my grandparent’s cellar. (I’m 66) We would run around opening windows & unplugging everything. Then down in the cellar while grandpa stood outside & watched till the last minute. Now, when the siren goes off I walk out on the porch & look up.
I live in Moore, Oklahoma
Stacie Godwin Wow! You are truly in tornado alley! Take care!
I liked Sledge Hammer's motto " I fight for Truth, Justice and my own amusement," and his catch phrase "Trust me; I know what I'm doing."
12:22 when my friends are on a road trip and we're "starving" but the driver doesn't want to stop we start doing the "FOOD, FOOD" thing!!
To me the best thing about Twister was the kick ass soundtrack!!
Wasn't bad, but several good songs were left off the CD.
@@bustyrandit Agreed, wonder why that happened? Maybe some copyright drama?
I have the soundtrack on cassette tape that I got from my mom for Xmas that year.
Night of the twisters was a book i read in elementary school long before twister came out.
That was made into a movie from memory
@mountaingal homemaker I hated Night of the Twisters.
You're absolutely right. Not to mention the fact that any debris could have hit them and would have killed them with winds of that speed.
F-OOD FOOD, FOOD = Hungry Chant (They all knew how good Meg's cooking was)
As for the prank bugs...
You should do one on "Bird on a Wire."
PS) My favorite part of this movie was the quirky eccentricity of Paxton's team of storm chasers.
The big exposition reel when we get the biggest Easter eggs about Bill and Helen’s characters.
Sorry for your loss.
This comment really bummed me out. So sorry for your loss man😞
Fun fact. The weather man that's was on TV in the motel scene is a real meteorologist
It's Mike Morgan for news channel 4 of Oklahoma watch him everynight
This is insane! I was literally just talking about this movie and then this popped up in my notifications.
I used to watch this all the time. It's one of the most quotable films of the 90s.

10:42, Twister was nominated for Best Visual Effects, but Independence day took home the Oscar.
to be fair dude, 1996 did have some strong competition that year when talking about sci-fi/action movies!!!
similar thing happened 10 years prior, where "Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home", "The Fly" and "Aliens" were nominated for Academy Awards in the Visual Effects/Make-Up/Sound Effects categories.
so with that said, while the visual effects for "Twister" are indeed excellent, but the use of both practical and computer effects for "Independence Day" rightfully deserved its Oscar win.
I literally thought with that jacket you were wearing that we were seeing 10 thing Saturday Night Fever
Got that Miami Vice Jacket today....Great movie, just watched this weekend. (I have all of the VHS tapes when my blockbuster closed. Some 1800 movies
How awesome but sad because i miss blockbuster so much. I rented movies until the end, I was so mad when they closed.
I didn’t make it to Blockbuster. Had my own local rental place where I lived. I did get several VHS tapes from them.
Does anybody even use Redbox anymore? I'm just wondering if all video rentals are obsolete yet. I still see them around but I never see anyone use them.
My favorite scene in the movie..."Where is my truck?" Then it comes crashing down right in front of them.
We got cows!! One of my favourite lines. First time I saw this movie was at a drive in with a double feature with Executive Decision starring Kurt Russell
Omg, the drive in scene would of been terrifying!?
@@SkellingtonFan kinda but that's why the cow line stuck with me all these years

RIP Bill Paxton. You'll always be "The Extreme" to me!
HEY Minty any chance you can do 10 things you didnt know about Fast Getaway with Corey Haim?
De Bont claimed that Kubrick would let him use clips from "The Shining", because old Stanley dug "Speed" so much.
The VHS edition of Twister had a message from the National Weather Service at the end of it.
What was the message ?

This is one of my absolute favorite movies of all time. I completely enjoyed it. It made me want to go into meteorology in high school. Respect the wind by van halen in the ending credits was AMAZING.
I always looked at it as one long Dodge Ram Commercial...
Love this film can watch it again and again i went to the ride at universal was very good
Watched Twister again not so long ago and yeah, errr, it was utter crap...…...But I liked it. And to be fair the final tornado is very menacing.
"Science doesn't suck it only pulls or pushes"
A quote from an old science teacher, that I always remember.
That is true...lol!
Night of the twisters is a children’s book. I read it in the late 80s so it’s at least that old. Not a bad book considering I still remember parts of it
Great movie I bought this on Blu-Ray recently as well an underrated movie which back in the day was great.
Tornadoes terrify me more than any other natural phenomenon...except spiders. Spiders give me heart failure!
I saw it in 1996 just to hear the tracks that Van Halen contributed to the film...
Every time you mention another movie that came out the same year...
"That movie is that old?!?"
This movie inspired me to be an AeroGrapher's Mate (That's a Navy Meteorologist)
One of good friends from high school had your nec in the navy
Awesome!!

The only part that sucked was the Honcho getting dropped on it's lid. Broke my heart. 😪
Should do ten things you didn’t know about the boy who could fly
Minty, just come off an 80s Miami Vice binge watching session?? ;)
Well Minty 'NAILED' another great video😁

We already have grittier version of twister. Flying cows are nothing next to airborne sharks 🤣
I remember going to the theatre watching this movie and loving it and before I left I snuck into another movie and it just so happened to be twister again
😂😂😂
When I get off the phone I sometimes still tell people "I've gotta go Julia, we've got cows." Some people get it, some don't.
The "food!" part/scene and "cows!" are still the best parts of the film. 😂
Also, RIP Bill Paxton and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. 😢💔

Minty about to star in another Miami Vice reboot.
At least he got a genuine whoopie cushion and not one of those cheap dollar store fart bags.
Aw man Twister the Bill Paxton cut sounds wicked
just saw TWISTERS last night. It connects perfectly well with this one. DOROTHY V is featured.
Night of the twisters is based on real events that happen in Nebraska USA, I believe it was about the late 70's early 80's, it started as a book.
@0:24 Technically... technically... they weren't divorced. She didn't sign the papers in the beginning and obviously he didn't file the papers by the end of the movie.
I saw Twister in a drive-in theater back in 1996.
Did the screen rip itself apart?
I take it you've heard about Twisters coming to a theater near you...I think it may be a sequel almost 30 years in the making.. and wth kinda suit are you wearing Minty??
