The villain and the hero never facing off directly is part of what made the movie so good. It didn't follow the Hollywood manual in many ways. Plus Gary Oldman played Zorg perfectly. He was "My favrit." Mia had the adorable face and no one else i can imagine could play Lilu. The opera singer even in blue was beautiful in many ways including the voice. It was so many unusual perfections that made this movie so great.

I did some digging after I saw this 10 Facts video and it looks like "Mr. Shadow" was the tentative title to the sequel. Which would probably explain the origin "of pure evil" more and could have Leeloo and Dallas deal with being universal celebrities and the impact that has on their psyche. Granted all that is speculation. I understand the reason being for why Besson dropped the idea of the sequels was because of how long and arduous the special effects process was to work with at the time; versus projects like The Transporter and Taken that aren't green screen effects heavy.
Same here. I LOVE that move, because it is different and doesn't feel like a "classical" adventure movie, but still is a amazingly awesome (and funny) adventure movie with a different take on ... well everything. (Without doing things just for the sake of being different, but actually good) Jovovich and Willis are great like everyone else in that movie. Heck i'm probably the only one who loves that movie (much) more than the original Star Wars trilogy. I would have LOVED to see a trilogy and simply more from that fascinating universe.

I remember them talking about it, Who ever that was who put that together was a genus in my book! It was beautiful sound sounding song that i heard in a movie the mix of old world and new wave was great. I have to watch it tonight now because it's a fun movie.

I went to the premier in Zürich, Switzerland. Luc Besson himself came on stage afterwards and answered questions from the audience. I never got to ask him how long he had been a sci-fi fan, because I had never seen so many tropes in a single film. It was an incredible evening.
The funny part is that the way the antagonist and protagonist never met each other is actually one of the most daring and interesting things about how this story was presented. Zorg's own evil plotting was really the thing that destroyed him in the end; While Dallas' humble wish for a quiet life and his desire to protect Lilu were ultimately what lead to all of Zorg and "Mr. Shadow"' having all their plots come to nothing. I'm not so sure this movie would have been as good if Zorg and Dallas had a big fight scene. Zorg wasn't really a soldier, and Dallas wasn't really a particularly vengeful type. They both had totally different agendas and no absurd plot convenience tools were used to force them into the same space even though their paths were completely intertwined. I doubt this would work in a lot of movies, but somehow it worked with the silly nature of this film.
This is one of my all time favorite movies ....ever! Chris Tucker rocked his role...and my family love to imitate him....Theres nothing about this movie, I dont like.
@Stasis Field in all honesty, the whole world has been "evolving and adapting into one of more and more weirdness and goofiness and craziness than it was a few years before" for at least the past 50+ years. So if you stretch that exact method of "change over time" into a few hundred years in the future, I have no doubt it'd be at least similar or weirder than, or at minimum "equally different" from the last few years.
Take for instance: comparing the "rare and unusual nature of cosplay and the like" of the world of the 1990s to how it's become almost a common term with many people either knowing what it is or actually having done it themselves (people between 15 and 40 years old) , in the last few years. It used to be the few who were least popular in modern culture and now it's more or less the new normal. Look how nerds / geeks / etc were commonly picked on, mocked, belittled, and otherwise bullied throughout school and past highschool, from as recently as the 1980s and 1990s, but now , it's normal , if not celebrated if you have interests in videogames, computers, comic book heroes, cartoons, and anime. Things have been changing all around us, a lot. It IS getting weirder and wilder. The world is becoming more accepting and less critical of "different". I'm pretty sure that's really for the most part not a bad thing
Besson's imagination turned into a timeless film. agreed, living on a farm and being bored sparks creativity. 5th Element do not fit in any genre and that's why I 💜 it since 1997.
People listing off reasons why they didn't like the film and here I am like ".....that's why I liked it." It never took itself too seriously, which sci-fi films tend to do.
That said, Dallas was more onscreen time than leeloo, but that's because he's a super amazing sidekick. He's the doer, he gets stuff done , like a cross between a sidekick and a costarring hero. This film has 2 main heroes, not one. I say this because , unarmed, leeloo took out more villains per minute than korben did , on a few scenes of each of them fighting. Mr. Dallas did a lot of gunplay and military style heroics, but at the end of the day he was the trigger to leeloo's gun. Neither can do much without the other (as far as saving the day) , and I think that was a major plot point. They needed eachother, so they both could help eachother save the world, because neither could do it on their own. Zorg was not the main villain, so much as the doer for the main evil overlord being. Seemingly the evil mr shadow couldn't take stuff , hunt stuff, or do stuff without enemies coming to "him", until he was ready to make his big bad guy act against earth. Zorg was like the manager for the roadies who prepared the tour for the main villain's big reveal at Earth. Dallas was more than just the bodyguard, but alone he was less than the main hero
"We're sending someone in to negotiate!" [Dallas speaks the universal language] "Anybody else wanna negotiate?" "Where did you learn to negotiate?" "I wonder" My favorite scene...along with "itsa..itsa..itsa"
Its "Where did he learn to negotiate like that?" asks the twitchy nervous security guy. Also love when the priest barges in Korben's apartment and calls him Mr. Willis.
I could see Kurt Russell as Corbin Dallas. Badass and comic in one. I saw Zorg as someone who saw a way to make a profit and never questioned that his actions might end the universe. The irony of just missing Dallas, providing the escape vehicle, and once again an empty case, so much better than any fight. Zorg can't count to four... Or check the case in a timely manner.
I always imagined that Zorg somehow came in contact with the bad one, thinking it was a business associate, learning way too late what it really was. (But never really opposed it anyways.)

In the novel Zorg survives (basically he force fields up and is blown to a planet when the cruise ship explodes) which makes sense if Besson envisioned a trilogy
I saw this movie in the theater when I was a teenager. As far as I can remember I think I wanted to see another movie but my friends convinced me to see The 5th Element. Not knowing anything about it other than them saying the preview looked awesome I went and saw it reluctantly. And holy crap was I glad I did! My young mind was absolutely blown away. I had never seen anything like it. Anyways I have seen it several times since then and it still holds up. It's one of those movies that constantly breaks your expectations.
I really like The Fifth Element, i don't even know exactly why. It's just so out of the ordinary. Full of great actors, interesting characters, good action, good music. The look the feel, the direction and Luc Bessons vision, it's really a quite one of a kind movie.
Many other similarities, seems he just regurgitated a suppressed recollection of "Heavy Metal" the movie... ...when I was almost eleven, I thought I wrote "Valerie" by Stevie Winwood... then I heard it (again).
Here's another fact the Diva's name - Plava Laguna translates to Blue Lagoon in Serbian (Jovovic is Serbian/Ukranian). Jovovic played in Return to Blue Lagoon prior to this movie.
The fifth element what can I say A CLASSIC FILM 1 of the best sci fi ever made. Its absolutely ageless 22 years old and can still hold it's own against films now.
Hey Minty you forgot one thing Besson's was a huge fan of that French comic book from Belgium called Valerian and Laureline where he got his designs from the comic for The Fifth Element.
Let's not forget he made the film version of that, too! He is also planning to do a sequel despite how upset he is with STX's handling of the film's marketing.
Still probably my most favourite movie. I find it amazing that they wrote the opera part to be impossible to sing yet if you look over UA-cam, you can find several people absolutely nailing it in real life.
She pronounces it herself in commentaries of other movies Jo VO vich. Not Jo ko vich. I must accept how a person pronounces her own last name (stage name or otherwise) as how it is her name should be pronounced. As many times as her name is mentioned in this video, this is a drastic distraction. Fun fact: the Diva also astonished cast and crew by actually performing the bulk of her aria with her own voice, most of the aria was expected to have needed to be synthesized, as it wasn't believed a person could come close to truly performing it.

Casted perfectly, this stylish film combines beautiful futuristic concepts including life, architecture, music, fashion and functional art. The action, humor, romance and a constant change of scenery aesthetic makes this film literally delicious. Its one of the most perfect films ever made
Leeloo is not the Fifth Element. Life and Love is... Shes the perfect human being and it takes her being complete(finding love to be complete) to become the fifth element. Also... Jokovich? Really? Lol

I LOVE this movie! I've owned it on videotape & DVD. I've watched it more than a dozen times! It was the first time I'd seen Milla Jovovich on screen, & I thought she was a perfect blend of beauty & naivety (although, at times, she displays brilliance.) This movie makes me laugh (every scene with Chris Tucker in it) & cry (when Leeloo wants Dallas to say he loves her.) IMO, the casting, SFX, costumes, & soundtrack were close to perfect. While in social isolation during these trying times, I'll likely watch it a couple more times!

Bloody hell I love this film so much. "Supreme being, Lilu Dallas multipass" =) The soundtrack is amazing and the ending is so beautiful, and because of your number 1 fact, I can see why it's so genuine and lovely. Oh and Minty, it's Jovovich not Jokovich hahaa, bloody hell =P
This is one of my all time favourites, there is so many things wrong with it, tone, tempo, music and motivations - yet when all parts of the movie get together it somehow just works. Sometimes i wonder if Besson did it just as an dare to himself. Strong military general - lets make comedy scenes with him. Comedy sidekick - lets make him as annoying as possible. Romantic interest for our main hero - let her talk a language nobody understands, and finally evil villain, let us not explain why he goes along to destroy everything and let him never ever meet the main hero.
The fact that the hero and the villain never met but were so interconnected was a great part of the story. If Zorg had not fired the 1 million people the Dallas would have still be driving his cab. Or he might have been.I thought it was a great twist that they never met but were fighting against each other with out knowing it.

People listing off reasons why they didn't like the film and here I am like ".....that's why I liked it." It never took itself too seriously, which sci-fi films tend to do.

Dallas was just a bodyguard, Leeloo was the main character. So Dallas and Zorg not meeting isn't that weird.
Yeah, besides, Zorg was literally the big bad's errand boy.
That said, Dallas was more onscreen time than leeloo, but that's because he's a super amazing sidekick. He's the doer, he gets stuff done , like a cross between a sidekick and a costarring hero. This film has 2 main heroes, not one. I say this because , unarmed, leeloo took out more villains per minute than korben did , on a few scenes of each of them fighting. Mr. Dallas did a lot of gunplay and military style heroics, but at the end of the day he was the trigger to leeloo's gun. Neither can do much without the other (as far as saving the day) , and I think that was a major plot point. They needed eachother, so they both could help eachother save the world, because neither could do it on their own.
Zorg was not the main villain, so much as the doer for the main evil overlord being. Seemingly the evil mr shadow couldn't take stuff , hunt stuff, or do stuff without enemies coming to "him", until he was ready to make his big bad guy act against earth.
Zorg was like the manager for the roadies who prepared the tour for the main villain's big reveal at Earth.
Dallas was more than just the bodyguard, but alone he was less than the main hero

I used that line in real negotiations. And always knew when I met another fan.
Its "Where did he learn to negotiate like that?" asks the twitchy nervous security guy. Also love when the priest barges in Korben's apartment and calls him Mr. Willis.

Mel Gibson could have pulled that off, but Willis is classic.
It would have changed the entire feel of the movie too it would be fascinating to see a Mel Gibson version too

I could see Kurt Russell as Corbin Dallas. Badass and comic in one.
I saw Zorg as someone who saw a way to make a profit and never questioned that his actions might end the universe.
The irony of just missing Dallas, providing the escape vehicle, and once again an empty case, so much better than any fight.
Zorg can't count to four...
Or check the case in a timely manner.
I always imagined that Zorg somehow came in contact with the bad one, thinking it was a business associate, learning way too late what it really was. (But never really opposed it anyways.)

@Brique Zallivam ikr? It was an interesting time, to see how things are done behind the scenes and irl Milla Jovavich is a nice person to talk to if only briefly. And it is also a classic film, Bruce Willis is a lot taller in person than his films make him out to be.

Leeloo's language was not made up. In an interview a few years back, Milla said it was from her Ukrainian language but in baby talk.

Yeah, it gives the feel of a future that is different (but not unlikeable) than the usual Star Trek or Star Wars sci fi we always get to see.

In the novel Zorg survives (basically he force fields up and is blown to a planet when the cruise ship explodes) which makes sense if Besson envisioned a trilogy

I saw this movie in the theater when I was a teenager. As far as I can remember I think I wanted to see another movie but my friends convinced me to see The 5th Element. Not knowing anything about it other than them saying the preview looked awesome I went and saw it reluctantly. And holy crap was I glad I did! My young mind was absolutely blown away. I had never seen anything like it. Anyways I have seen it several times since then and it still holds up. It's one of those movies that constantly breaks your expectations.
I really like The Fifth Element, i don't even know exactly why. It's just so out of the ordinary. Full of great actors, interesting characters, good action, good music. The look the feel, the direction and Luc Bessons vision, it's really a quite one of a kind movie.

Here's another fact the Diva's name - Plava Laguna translates to Blue Lagoon in Serbian (Jovovic is Serbian/Ukranian). Jovovic played in Return to Blue Lagoon prior to this movie.

The fifth element what can I say A CLASSIC FILM 1 of the best sci fi ever made. Its absolutely ageless 22 years old and can still hold it's own against films now.

Hey Minty you forgot one thing Besson's was a huge fan of that French comic book from Belgium called Valerian and Laureline where he got his designs from the comic for The Fifth Element.
Let's not forget he made the film version of that, too! He is also planning to do a sequel despite how upset he is with STX's handling of the film's marketing.

I find it amazing that they wrote the opera part to be impossible to sing yet if you look over UA-cam, you can find several people absolutely nailing it in real life.
I thought Lelu was the main protagonists and Darkness was the main bad guy.

I must accept how a person pronounces her own last name (stage name or otherwise) as how it is her name should be pronounced. As many times as her name is mentioned in this video, this is a drastic distraction.
Fun fact: the Diva also astonished cast and crew by actually performing the bulk of her aria with her own voice, most of the aria was expected to have needed to be synthesized, as it wasn't believed a person could come close to truly performing it.

I LOVE this movie! I've owned it on videotape & DVD. I've watched it more than a dozen times! It was the first time I'd seen Milla Jovovich on screen, & I thought she was a perfect blend of beauty & naivety (although, at times, she displays brilliance.) This movie makes me laugh (every scene with Chris Tucker in it) & cry (when Leeloo wants Dallas to say he loves her.) IMO, the casting, SFX, costumes, & soundtrack were close to perfect. While in social isolation during these trying times, I'll likely watch it a couple more times!

This is one of my all time favourites, there is so many things wrong with it, tone, tempo, music and motivations - yet when all parts of the movie get together it somehow just works.
Sometimes i wonder if Besson did it just as an dare to himself. Strong military general - lets make comedy scenes with him. Comedy sidekick - lets make him as annoying as possible. Romantic interest for our main hero - let her talk a language nobody understands, and finally evil villain, let us not explain why he goes along to destroy everything and let him never ever meet the main hero.

The fact that the hero and the villain never met but were so interconnected was a great part of the story. If Zorg had not fired the 1 million people the Dallas would have still be driving his cab. Or he might have been.I thought it was a great twist that they never met but were fighting against each other with out knowing it.
