Tragic story of Rubin (Hurricane) Carter put to a terrific tune with great instrumentation. I think this is one of Dylan's greatest songs musically. This song and album came along in mid-70s, well after his folk period. He now has a full band

A Dylan classic. This song was from 1975 (48 years ago) but still relevant today, as are most of his songs. As I mentioned before, my favorite line is "Now all the criminals in their coats and their ties, Are free to drink martinis and watch the sun rise, While Rubin sits like Buddha in a ten-foot cell, An innocent man in a living hell". Also, Bob Dylan is still going strong at age 81, and recently toured Europe and released a great album--"Rough and Rowdy Ways" (2020). Thanks for your great reaction. I think the guy Bob refers to in "Desolation Row" who used to play the electric violin has come out of retirement because the electric violin sounds incredible!!

Dylan saw Scarlet Rivera walking on a NYC street carrying her violin. He asked if she could play, then asked if she wanted to come to a recording session. Although she was on her way to an audition, she decided to go with Dylan. Then, she played brilliantly throughout the Desire album and on the subsequent Rolling Thunder tours. It's a great story of happenstance leading to a wonderful outcome.
You are such a joy to watch. This is one of a few songs Dylan wrote about real people, and the injustices that happen in a prejudiced system. I highly recommend "The Lonesome Death Of Hattie McCarroll". Dylan's storytelling at its best!

I always prefer his studio versions for those who may be reacting to a particular Dylan song for the first time - as you did here. That said the live version he did for the John Hammond Tribute in the mid 70s is well worth a look by you. Your reactions are excellent and thoughtful👍

Denzel Washington played Rubin Carter in the 1999 film "The Hurricane" that told the story of Carter's arrest, his time in prison, and the efforts of a boy from Brooklyn who fought to free him. Carter said later, "Hate got me into this place, love got me out."
