This is a true story. Bob Dylan helped bring attention to the plight of Ruben,, hurricane,, Carter. Bob Dylan is arguably the greatest singer/songwriter in American history. His lyrics earned him a Nobel Prize in Literature. His career dates from the 1960s to today.
Songs are not only about dancing, they can be powerful social commentary that put a light on injustice in the world and educate the listener. This is a true story about a black boxer who was wrongly convicted of murder in 1967. Dylan wrote the song in 1975 but as he was using real people's names who were witnesses, he ended up re-recording it in 1976 for fear of a lawsuit. There was also a retrial of the case in 1976 which failed to clear him but eventually he was released in 1985 after a court found the prosecution was based on racism and hiding facts from jurors. A movie called The Hurricane was released in 1999 with Denzel Washington playing Carter for which he was nominated for Best Actor. I highly recommend anyone watch it who hasn't before.
He wasn't "wrongly convicted". He was found GUILTY not just once, but in two separate trials. He was released because so much time had passed (30+ years) that most of the witnesses had died at that point, and the prosecution decided to not pursue the charges again.
I'm from Brazil. Now 70 years old. When this song was released in the 60ths I was a schoolboy in my teens. It was by that time that Bob Dylan made me get in touch with the real "Talking Blues", with this song, "Hurricane". And I don't get tired of hearing this song every time I can. 🎉🎉🎉🎉
From the greatest creator of songs ever. Bob Dylan's delivery and phrasing was insane on this song and also the imagery is so strong it's like a film coming out of your speakers . You need to dive into Dylan's music and especially his lyrics he is the greatest lyricist that this world will ever have, but when you get in to Dylan you go deep, the meaning of his lyrics can drive you completely insane so I'm just warning you, but you will enjoy every minute of it. Bob Dylan is probably the most influential artist from 1963 when he released the song blowing in the wind to murder most foul 2020, he 82 still touring, The tour used to be called The never ending tour, honestly the man is a artistic genius please look into his work not just his music is paintings his sculptures and his writing.
This is one of Dylan's most iconic songs, and he has written HUNDREDS. Dylan also has many different styles of music. I would suggest. "A Hard Rain's A-gonna Fall," "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright," "A Simple Twist of Fate, "Highway 61 Revisited," "With God on Our Side," "Forever Young," just to give you a feel of his music. These songs barely scratch the surface of his massive catalog. I enjoy your reactions. Keep it going.❤
Listen to Bob's "injustice" songs - "Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll", "Only a Pawn in their Game" "Death of Emmett Till" "Who killed Davey Moore" "Chimes of Freedom" "Masters of War" "Ballad of Hollis Brown"
Denzel Washington played Rubin Hurricane Carter in the highly successful film entitled Hurricane. This song played a feature part. It would be a shame to go thru life unaware of Bob Dylan. You have much to look forward to!
♥ Bob Dylan! IMO the greatest lyricist in music history! I suggest these Dylan songs: Tangled Up In Blue, Shelter From The Storm, Visions Of Johanna, Like A Rolling Stone, Things Have Changed & It's All Over Now Baby Blue
I think you got a fairly good rundown on Bob Dylan in some of the other comments below, he was truly a groundbreaking songwriter. One suggestion if I may, listen to, "Subterranean Homesick Blues". You may consider it the first "rap" song? Be sure and watch the black and white video with him flipping poster size cue cards of the lyrics. I think you will like it.
Can't say enough positive about Dylan's music and song writing. He has a list of favorites for me. When Hurricane was released I really enjoyed the music, but caught on quick to the message. It was powerful at the time and not edited in any form except to change a few names. Artist of the times brought feeling and emotions out. Hope you keep enjoying the music and let the lyrics take you in your own thoughts.
The 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to the American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan (born 1941) "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition".
Bob Dylan recommend songs: of "It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)(frirst rap song ), Mr. Tambourine Man, The Times They Are a-Changin', Visions Of Johanna or Dylan best Vocal performance Pretty Saro or Lay Lady Lay, or Civil rights movement songs like The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll / Emmett Till, blowing in the wind or some love songs Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right or Boots of Spanish Leather , or traditional Corinna, Corinna or House Of The Rising Sun or All along the watchtower - his masterpiece nobel prize for lyric winning caliber song.
I hate that song! The story is total bullshit. It makes me paraphrase Oscar Wilde "Only someone with a heart of stone could listen to The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll without laughing." Godawful melodrama, Snidely Whiplash, "You must pay the rent!" "I can't pay the rent!" :(
6:22 There is no way they could block this. It’s a true story and a true eye opener. All of Bob Dylan’s songs are revolutionary in nature. He addresses the morality of society in many songs. Today these topics aren’t so taboo, and we now know all these issues he addresses are facts. But at the time there were many people who were more than happy to say these issues don’t exist. Most of us know that’s all bullsht, but there are still some who want to ignore these issues and pretend they don’t exist.
Reactions like this one for Bob Dylan's Hurricane are my favorite. not only listening for the first time to the music but also hearing this story for the first time. I love how unapologetic Dylan sings about this. It is not like "Hey the legal system made some errors", no it's like "they did this on purpose, not because they wanted to punish the culprit, but to punish a black man." He points out that not only the System is rigged but also the actors in the system are a major problem. The vulgar language he uses for the people that did this to Rubin Carter fits perfectly. You can feel Dylan's rage.
Legendary singer songwriter in Bob Dylan,(Robert Zimmerman)! This is an unforgettable true story which I remembered as a young teenager watching on ABC tv showing Ruben Carter fighting from prison. I learned all about Mr. Carter then. Mr. Dylan is considered the greatest of greats in songwriting! Try reacting to Blowin’ In The Wind,All Along The Watchtower, made more famous by Jimi Hendrix, and Tangled Up in Blue, just to name a very few.
Dylan is a legend. Songwriter, yes. Some consider him to be among the great songwriters of the 20th century. A lot of his songs,, like this, are true stories, and in story format. Others are commentaries and some of his songs were very popular, playing on the mainstream charts. I recommend almost anything by him. My favorite to suggest is: Subterranean Homesick Blues (the 'video' version). It's not really a video per se, but it's a film of him doing the song that makes a great predecessor for music videos. It's really cool. Dylan saw a woman with a violin case walking across the street (in Greenwich Village) and asked her to sit in on the recording session. She turned out to be - - wow. Here's the story from WikiP: Bob Dylan is said to have discovered Rivera before the rehearsal for his 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue tour. While being driven in his limousine around the Village, Dylan spotted Rivera walking with her violin case. Dylan stopped to converse with Rivera and invited her to his rehearsal studio where she spent the afternoon playing along with several of his new songs. "If I had crossed the street seconds earlier," said Rivera in 2012, "it never would have happened." After a session with her, Dylan invited Rivera to play on the Rolling Thunder Revue tour. She played an important role in Dylan's studio album Desire.
Everything in this song happened in real life, Ruben "the hurricane" Carter was a real boxer who was framed for murder, he spent 20 years in prison, after being convicted by a rigged court system right before he was to compete for the championship because of this he was stripped of his chance to become a champion, protest after protest nothing worked to unrig the justice system, this song was created during one of those protest, people all over the US were fighting for Ruben but after so long nothing worked so people forgot about him for a while until he was finally able to get a new trial by the Supreme Court that wasn't rigged against him based on his skin tone, his innocence was proven and he was set free in the 80s and he was awarded the world heavyweight championship and unfortunately the hurricane passed away in 2014 but he passed away a free man
Hi. New subscriber. Love Dylan.. Not all Dylan songs are so deep or so spelt-out He's got some light-hearted & goofy ones funny he's a word-ster so always cool twists some are beautiful love songs some protest songs another from very early days of Dylan is "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carrol" so when i was falling in love with Dylan i was.. no kidding.. 8 - 9 years old..growing up in a bar my folks owned ..Dylan was on the jukebox all the time . Cat Stevens was my # 1 till within 4 years Dylan snuck up stealing the spot & moved in for life. But since Dylan.."moved in" my 'house' was neighbors with Zeppelin Beatles, Hendricks, Stones,Wonder, Bowie and 4 more years later room mates with Tom Waits & John Prine... i know ..great neighborhood huh?. So i truly hope you listen to more Dylan ..let him move in he's a great roommate😊✌i know I'm weird..great reaction. Thank you❤
Dylan songs cover many , many aspects of life and thousands of artists have covered them ....many believe he can't ''sing'' but his ''voice'' has been more powerful than most others .. IMO
True story Ace about Rueben Carter, middleweight boxer. Dylan is a brilliant storyteller, one of the best since the 60s. I have this album and it's fabulous! Try Mozambique from this same album Desire

Dylan actually visited the Hurricane in prison. Dylan would probably never admit it but he was a true champion against injustice and always for the underdog.
Great Reaction, as yours so often are. I'd definately appreciate seeing you do more Dylan reactions. "LeopardSkin PillBox Hat" (Fun), "Ballad of a Thin Man"(Mysterious but you'll catch it), and "Emotionally Yours"(Romantic) would be my reccomendations to you, as long as I don't think to hard on it. Oh, for you, "If dogs run free" is another I think you'd appreciate.
Bob Dylan is the greatest artist of modern times, without a single shred of doubt - through his main artistic talent of song-writing, though he is also a writer, artist and sculptor of great execution - he is the unending gift, the eye of our storm ~ he is the runt made-good and any musician and most visual artists would at te drop of their hat acknowledge this as the exact truth - he is the space between lines and the balance of all yet tilted ever so slightly toward the good - his cross is weighted with the perspective of the chosen and it is a position deep down he would rather not be x love the dude and it’s his world that culture has spun around. He made the first music video and got the the best he’s stoned for the first time he was booed and heckled for going electric and is responsible for modern songwriter wherein the singer writes their own songs - none of this is Bob, he is the vessel of all this truth and we are lucky he bore it
… any musician and most visual artists worth their salt at the drop of their hat…. ….and got the Beatles stoned for the first time (arguably resulting in the change in their music; it would have happened anyways but it was Bob that past them a joint first not that he was a big stoner)…. ….and at the same time just a man like any woman or man blended with our deliverance. He was arrested as a vagrant on Venice beach a couple decades ago as he is a very down to earth human and the young cop was informed by her elders at the station who he was - he was actually scoping a place ou5 to buy I think x Bob, the stories are endless + he is very, very very funny
It’s often the case that one doesn’t catch all of the references (in this case to earlier times). ..he ain’t no Gentleman Jim.. refers to a fighter from the late 1800s. In the Raoul Walsh film Gentleman Jim (1941), Jim Corbett was played by Errol Flynn (perhaps best known for playing the lead in Michael Curtiz’s The Adventures of Robin Hood (1838).
Check out Dylan's much earlier song about another fighter called "WHO KILLED DAVEY MOORE?" It's an indictment of an entire society that thrives on violence. Meanwhile, you seem like a very decent, caring guy - who accidentally stumbled upon a masterpiece of social criticism and call for Justice!
Ruben got his name cleared many years later with the help of a group helping innocent people in jail. And Ruben got released. Dylan put a spotlight on Ruben but he did not participate in the freeing of Ruben. It is rare to hear songs with Dylan addressing real people. Hattie Carroll and Sara springs to mind but most of his lyrics are very deep and profound. In "Hurricane" he is very direct and he whips everyone involved in the case. I like that about Dylan
It helped spotlight the injustice. But a lot of dedicated people working to get the conviction overturned was more directly responsible for his release.
He earned the n word pass. It's the same way that a white character saying the n-word in a movie, when the movie is specifically about racism, is fine, because we know that that actor is bringing light to a social injustice. The whole point is to talk about it and show what really happened. If you censor these words, it becomes less powerful. In fact, the n-word is very hateful which is why he used it, because he was showing anger for the amount of hate that the black community showed. At the time the media portrayed him in such a negative way that black people at the time also showed an immense amount of hate for him feeling that he was showing black people in poor light. There was a reason he chose to use the n-word.
"Is this song ok to react to." Yes, and it is sad that we now live in a world where people actually ask that question. Censors should be strung up by their toes.
I don’t understand why this would be banned. That’s purely ridiculous and just the notion someone would think so is everything wrong with this country and the world
Dude, you seem like a super nice and thoughtful guy, and quite expressive - but maybe you should do a bit of light research before reacting to someone like Dylan - (Although I guess no one is really like Dylan - a genius of immense range - awarded the Nobel prize for literature, so yes, he wrote his own songs.)
You gotta react to Oliver Anthony “Rich Men North of Richmond”. A couple weeks ago nobody knew who he was and now the video is pushing 40 million views. He also turned down an 8 million dollar record deal. Seriously, you really need to check it out. 👍

Joni close second 😂 tom waits Paul simon, Neil young, townes van zandt, Bruce springsteen, Steve earle, Paul simon, John prine, Leonard cohan 😂
I have watched SO many reactions to this song and it makes me sad that none of these black guys know this is a true story!

That’s purely ridiculous and just the notion someone would think so is everything wrong with this country and the world
If UA-cam should ever gain sentience and chooses to block obnoxious "reaction channels", reacting to History is the only one that should remain...
Why do you think this song should be banned? It's a true story. It's injustice that should be banned. Yes Dylan wrote this song.
Dude, you seem like a super nice and thoughtful guy, and quite expressive - but maybe you should do a bit of light research before reacting to someone like Dylan - (Although I guess no one is really like Dylan - a genius of immense range - awarded the Nobel prize for literature, so yes, he wrote his own songs.)
hey my channel rookie season ok? if u dont know bob dylan u dont know nothing , sorry but he is a top 3 artist in all genres ever , please goahead
You gotta react to Oliver Anthony “Rich Men North of Richmond”. A couple weeks ago nobody knew who he was and now the video is pushing 40 million views. He also turned down an 8 million dollar record deal. Seriously, you really need to check it out. 👍
This song could be rewritten with Donald Trump replacing Reuben Carter and be just as true. Lies and injustice seem to always prevail.
Did you just compare a black man to trump? Shame!!!
@@dennisdwyer6500 Are you telling me that justice depends on the color of your skin? Shame on you!!!!!
can you play the video of Donald Trump going to JAIL and show his arrest photo😎
I'm sure there's plenty of footage on UA-cam
