Gloomhaven PS5 Review - The Final Verdict

- After having spent three years on the PC, Gloomhaven is finally out now on consoles. The game puts players in charge of a guild of mercenaries in the titular city, as they take on quests to grow not only their own wallets, but also the city itself. The digital edition of the game makes use of a tabletop-styled aesthetic to emulate the feeling of playing a dungeon-diving experience with a group of friends.
Gloomhaven is especially notable for having an incredibly deep combat system that revolves around using various cards in different ways. Each one of its characters offers an incredible level of variety in how they play, and players will never end up seeing the same thing twice thanks to the sheer number of different unlockable characters and quests throughout the game. - Ігри
Very nice to hear! The missus and I have played the board game for almost 400 hours in total. We love it. Working our way through Frosthaven now. I’ll definitely need to get this.
I have the physical version... fantastic!!
I like how they have taken the Jaws of the Lion - a starter version in its boardgame format - and incorporated it into the main game, going so far as expanding the early quests that worked as tutorials into more complete missions.
It does take a bit to get used to the controls.
I dont understand why they dont give you a mousecursor like the pc version in the console version.
There are two versions for the consoles to select from (basic and bundle) and the basic version supports up to 17 characters. You start with 6 (2 easy, 2 normal, 2 hard) afaik. With the expansion you get another 4 characters.
I don't mind the controls on PS5. It is not super intuitive, but it's easy to get used to. The game is HARD. And that's coming from a D&D rpg gamer since 1989 :D . I like it. Yet it can be frustrating to not have enough cards to be able to walk...

I bought it two days ago on ps5, and I'm running into so many bugs that it's nearly unplayable in multiplayer cross-platform to Xbox with my wife. Huge amount of time almost every round where I can't pick cards until I wait 45 seconds or so, and even then, there's a huge input delay sometimes. On another round of combat, my wife couldn't even access her second character for roughly 1 minute after already selecting cards for her first one. I'm getting that 45-second wait before I can choose long rest on turns when it's my only option as well.

I think virtual Gloomhaven is a HUGE miss. A lot of mechanics that come naturally in the tabletop feel rather clunky and complicated in the digital version, with the endless loops of "validate this" or "validate that". A lot, no, A LOT of negative reviews on Steam and such really validate this view, IMO.
I think if they kept the setting and the characters, but adapted the gameplay itself to the new medium, it could've been much better.

I wouldn't have rated this an 8... 7 maybe. So far I've only really played the tutorial, but the interface is clunky, the cards obscure the tutorial text and the whoe thing just feels rather flat and dull.
