I held them properly, didn't point them at anyone, didn't transfer the spark plug to anyone else's chopsticks, and didn't lick them afterward ;) Great video guys. I hope the ancestors don't come after me, or if they do it's because they need their car fixed!
I'm guessing there's a Chinese drama somewhere where there's a table scene on which there's some passive-aggressive conflict only shown with non verbal communication via chopsticks XD

Most of these are just basic manners or to keep things clean. The only thing that I've been yelled at was sticking the chopsticks in the rice and stabbing others with them.

Most of these have good reasons, the sayings and stories are so people will not only follow, but also remember (we're talking 1000+ years here, so it worked) to do them.
@@CyberianPrincess I was told that the not eating pork was because burnt human flesh looks and smells like pork. That it refers to the time in the Bible where God wants Abraham to sacrifice his baby. However, Abraham doesn't want to and when he sees a goat stuck in a bush he thinks, "Ah, God doesn't want us to sacrifice our first born any more, God wants us to sacrifice a goat instead." So the not eating pork is a remembrance of that.
@@stephena1196 I have also heard that. To me it seems more likely that most of those traditions evolved for pragmatic reasons, but we will probably never know for sure.
Apparently in Japan you can use the back of the chopsticks to pick up food from a shared bowl and in to your bowl. It is especially recommended in somewhat more fancy company, but with friends and family it doesn't matter so much.
+SiLi In Norway aka Ithilme Ardaiell I think that's a relatively new culture thing. People are becoming more aware of sanitation and such so it is becoming acceptable to do so.
As a westerner i can say that while i never knew any of these chopstick rules, i have never made any of the mistakes mentioned. I feel slightly better about my chopstick etiquette now! However i do find it strange that it would be considered gross or offensive to actually have a chopstick touch your mouth, or to come in contact with your own saliva. Most people in the west use forks/spoons, etc... and those utensils are constantly going inside of peoples mouths. Yet it has never seemed inappropriate or dirty to than put my spoon back into my soup bowl and than repeat the process. However it is good to know these things as i eat lots of oriental foods, and don't want to be completely lacking in manners at restaurants. I do wonder though if it is appropriate to bring a personal set of chopsticks to a restaurant or someones home? Or would that suggest that their chopsticks aren't good enough?
If there's a tureen of soup in the middle of the table, you're going to use a ladle to serve yourself a bowl of soup from it, right? And then you eat from your own personal bowl with a spoon. Or if there's a plate on the table with vegetables or meat on it, there'd be tongs or a serving spoon to use to put the food on your own plate. Whereas with chopsticks, you use them to take the food from the common bowls/plates directly. So if you're licking your chopsticks and then reaching out to take more food from the common plate, your saliva is gonna touch even the parts of the food that you don't grab, and someone else will have to eat it.
THIS video is such a gem on chopsticks etiquette. About 95% of it I didn't know until now. But I'm just glad I learned chopsticks by being a keen observer of users who I thought were/looked refined and elegant using it. Well, except for occasionally licking a morsel or two off them, and resting them on the table perpedicular to my body. So, thanks for the lessons. Really appreciate the tutorial.
Thanks for the tip guys ......yes there was a few i knew and a few i wasnt aware of Mikey Chen when ive seen your vids when you eat something with chopsticks and when you goe on to describe the flavor and texture you hold your chopsticks in a stabbing motion in which i thought was showing appreciation of the food goes to show you how little i know
OMG I was literally about to comment how OTGW just made a video about 9 things to not do with chopsticks when I see the top comment about a war between the channels haha anyways I like Double Chen more!!! Go Double Chen!
number 2 is interesting, my family always picks up the food with the back of their chopsticks when they want to give it to someone else. I never thought it was wrong.
Thank you for bringing this up, guys! I was just sitting here thinking; my first gen southern Chinese xgf specifically taught me to use the backs of the chopsticks as serving utensils, because everyone eats from the front end. Otherwise it was considered a faux-pas because it was unsanitary ... so I suspect this 'rule' might be regional
I've NEVER used the back of my chopsticks before, other than sweeping the bones/leftovers that were dropped on the table that was left by me or the people that are also eating the meal with me, but I usually do that with the towel (forgot what you call it) so I basically never use the back of my chopsticks #Chinese
There's so many rules. lol. I don't care what anyone does with silverware. If I don't have a spoon, I'll eat that yogurt with a knife. If I drop my fork, depending where it landed, I'll pick it up and go right back to it. I don't care which way it faces on the table. I don't care if someone points a fork at me. Chop sticks are serious business. hahaha.
what are you talking about. In general forks go on the left and knife and spoon go on the right side. The ones that are above the plate are for dessert. The fork furthest from the plate is the appetizer, followed by salad, followed by entree.
Even though there are rules for silverware, I completely ignore them. For example, there's dinner forks, salad forks, tea spoon, soup spoon, dessert spoon, salad knife, meat knife, secretly hating someone but invite them so that you can stab them knife, and butter knife I just kind of use whatever works and have never really cared.
So just remember that these utensils are for food procurement and should not be placed in your mouth, used to gesture, or to spear something which is going into your mouth. I love this video. The Chinese sayings are a bonus!
Picking up food with the back of the chopstick is actually considered formal chopsticks manners in Japan since it's the side your mouth hasn't touched. :) Good tip for China tho.
i'd heard that the back end was the proper way to transfer food from a communal dish to your own rice bowl, but you don't eat with that end....once it's in your bowl, you switch them around and eat wiht the narrow end as usual...
I read that in Japan or sushi etiquette do not pick food from another person's plate with the end of the chopstick you put in your mouth. When moving food like these you should use the end you hold, which is considered the polite way.
pretty much, and its actually best to hold near the top instead of holding it at the middle, you have more control after getting it down and you use less strength, even thou you dont need much anyway, lol
5:25 : That's funny because in German we use the phrase "den Löffel abgeben" (to surrender the spoon) when someone dies. It derives from older times when the whole family ate out of the same pot and each member had his/hers own personal - often even self-carved - spoon. So when someone died he also no more used his spoon.

Gawd, I remember setting the table and trying to find chopsticks that match. Why were the all different sizes!? Lol, they all came from the same package! It's a life mystery...like why does the dryer only way left socks.
in Vietnamese version, banging the bowl is a sign you're calling out the spirit of the dead for a meal. Superstition, ancient tradition, don't ask why cuz I have no idea how to answer to who came up with that.
I lick my chopsticks and i also bite them. I have an oral fixation and tend to bite stuff: my pens and pencils/art supplies, my nails, inside of my cheek, my lips, my husband's lips lol anyway, I visited a Vietnamese friend's mom and she fed us and I held their nice chopsticks in my mouth with my teeth, just bouncing them there, I wasn't even aware I was doing it when I got scolded for it. I was embarrassed and felt pretty bad cause I messed up their chopsticks. I'm so uncivilized lol it was terrible
+Wanda Ricca True, however forks don't have anything to do with spirituality or ancestry (in America at the very least.) The additional layers of importance are foreign to me but very interesting/cool at the same time. I'll always try to remember and follow these rules. :)
I still remember at 7th grade that we have an activity. We are going to use chopsticks, who gets the most peas has the highest score but they used the back of the chopsticks I keep telling my teacher but he doesn't give a F*ck! So tribal leaders can't afford to be losing people... what are they gonna do? Ding 'lightbulb' "Yeah, so I was talking to God...." "To God... Like God, God?" Yup God, and he said you guys shouldn't be eating swine... he's getting pissed." 'Murmuring in the crowd'. "Ok, soo... we talked it over and... well if God says not to do it... yeah we'll cut the swine outta our diet. ... ... I'm just saying, Marvin over there is reeally skinny already so, we're gonna have to figure something out." See seems like superstition, but that was kind of an after the fact thing.
However, Abraham doesn't want to and when he sees a goat stuck in a bush he thinks, "Ah, God doesn't want us to sacrifice our first born any more, God wants us to sacrifice a goat instead." So the not eating pork is a remembrance of that.
its not superstitions. its called tradition. Not obeying these chopsticks "rule" means you are disrespecting to the culture.
It's not supertitious, it's called etiquette. Most of these are the same things you will not do with either a spoon, fork or knife.
@@stephena1196 I have also heard that. To me it seems more likely that most of those traditions evolved for pragmatic reasons, but we will probably never know for sure.
You learn something new everyday. I didn't know most of these. Thanks
When they mentioned twirling the chopsticks, I just KNEW they'd reference Kung Fu Panda again
NymphetaminexXxGrrrl yay!! Good job! I'm Asian and I'm proud of you girl!!
Komerican10 :)
i dropped my chopsticks once. that's it
NymphetaminexXxGrrrl I could bet you knew you shouldnt do walrus xD
I'm Chinese. I've kinda done 1/4 of these things. Whoops?
Nevermind I've done practically all of them without knowing it was bad manners
lolololol niccceee jk
Victoria Wong Me too I'm from Malaysia where are you at?
considering her last name, her eth. is chinese (or cantonese)
don't know about where he/she lives
THIS video is such a gem on chopsticks etiquette. About 95% of it I didn't know until now. But I'm just glad I learned chopsticks by being a keen observer of users who I thought were/looked refined and elegant using it. Well, except for occasionally licking a morsel or two off them, and resting them on the table perpedicular to my body. So, thanks for the lessons. Really appreciate the tutorial.
Thanks for the tip guys ......yes there was a few i knew and a few i wasnt aware of Mikey Chen when ive seen your vids when you eat something with chopsticks and when you goe on to describe the flavor and texture you hold your chopsticks in a stabbing motion in which i thought was showing appreciation of the food goes to show you how little i know
when dan said 'how rude' it sounded exactly like how Stephanie from full house says it
I only use a gardening trowel to shovel food in my mouth. Deal with it. :)
Yeah, Lord Beerus. Don't use chopsticks to kill Piccolo.
??? 😂😂😂😂😂😂
??? LOOOOOL BEERUS HAS LEVELED UP TO LVL 99 FOR HIS KUNG FU CHOP STICK SKILZ XDDDD
The fact that you’re telling people not to do this but you’re still doing it😂😂😂😂
Bro I can’t stop binging your vids. Definitely funny material
I never thought it was wrong.
yah i thought that was okay. for the japanese people tho
Yeah same. Even in China when relatives or aunties or something give me food they usually use the back of their chopsticks.
Same
I've NEVER used the back of my chopsticks before, other than sweeping the bones/leftovers that were dropped on the table that was left by me or the people that are also eating the meal with me, but I usually do that with the towel (forgot what you call it) so I basically never use the back of my chopsticks #Chinese
Chop sticks are serious business. hahaha.
dont judge
what are you talking about. In general forks go on the left and knife and spoon go on the right side. The ones that are above the plate are for dessert. The fork furthest from the plate is the appetizer, followed by salad, followed by entree.
actually forks n spoons have many rules too. it will be easier if you go to Europe to learn them
Even though there are rules for silverware, I completely ignore them. For example, there's dinner forks, salad forks, tea spoon, soup spoon, dessert spoon, salad knife, meat knife, secretly hating someone but invite them so that you can stab them knife, and butter knife I just kind of use whatever works and have never really cared.
***** I mean I CAN use them correctly if need be but at home all I really use if a fork and knife or spoon
So just remember that these utensils are for food procurement and should not be placed in your mouth, used to gesture, or to spear something which is going into your mouth. I love this video. The Chinese sayings are a bonus!
You guys are great. Thank you for all of the super hard work you do your videos are just sweet .
Picking up food with the back of the chopstick is actually considered formal chopsticks manners in Japan since it's the side your mouth hasn't touched. :) Good tip for China tho.
maybe some do that..some differences
i'd heard that the back end was the proper way to transfer food from a communal dish to your own rice bowl, but you don't eat with that end....once it's in your bowl, you switch them around and eat wiht the narrow end as usual...
I read that in Japan or sushi etiquette do not pick food from another person's plate with the end of the chopstick you put in your mouth. When moving food like these you should use the end you hold, which is considered the polite way.
Tim Hyatt Not in China, but apparently in Japan
I cant even hold the freaking chopsticks right.😠They always fly away from my fingers like a bird
First hold 1 chopstick like a pencil and move it up and down. 1 chopstick should not be moving.
pretty much, and its actually best to hold near the top instead of holding it at the middle, you have more control after getting it down and you use less strength, even thou you dont need much anyway, lol
Then you may should stop using birds and start using chopsticks instead 😐
see's chopstick flying chopstick hits eye ouch my eye!!!!!
Even though it's not done, that spinning chop stick trick Mike did was cool :)
Me: *can't use chopsticks to save my life*
Me: *watches a video of things I should never do with chopsticks*
same
Have you KAUGHT on to use em' yet? :3
The Chen Dynasty you guys should totally make a tutorial series explaining how to speak chinese
My parents point at me with chopsticks all the time when I don't get the a+..
D'oh!
I have the weird feeling all those chinese sayings and mythes are a way for perfectionist moms to scare their children into behaving as they wished.
Sousuke Aizen Ghostx1977 It's mostly hygiene and respect, the proverbs and superstitions were probably added after the fact. Like ancient peoples (yes, different groups of people... peoples) didn't have refrigeration or specified cooking and handling knowledge, so people die if they eat pigs, or get trichanosis worms. So you're like "hey don't get down on the swine". And they're like "we're kinda limited here, easy to raise, tastes good... yeah we're gonna eat it". Use chopstick for drinking water and soup 🍜
I'm glad that you include the Chinese writing too! It is a big explanation for understanding cultural differences in thought. thank you
This was great, informative, & entertaining. Thanks for sharing.
Oh yea, my mom when I was younger used to get really upset when I "searched" through food because I was a kid and she put all the broccoli on top and GAH!
Hah! Yea my mother got upset with me for doing stuff like that too XD
It was nice knowing ya. 😭😭😭
R.I.P.
Gawd, I remember setting the table and trying to find chopsticks that match.
Why were the all different sizes!?
Lol, they all came from the same package!
It's a life mystery...like why does the dryer only way left socks.
"Don't knock on the bowl." Me who plays a drum solo on the different bowls in the restaurant.
I had no idea about any of these. Thank you.
in Vietnamese version, banging the bowl is a sign you're calling out the spirit of the dead for a meal. Superstition, ancient tradition, don't ask why cuz I have no idea how to answer to who came up with that.
I lick my chopsticks and i also bite them. I have an oral fixation and tend to bite stuff: my pens and pencils/art supplies, my nails, inside of my cheek, my lips, my husband's lips lol
anyway, I visited a Vietnamese friend's mom and she fed us and I held their nice chopsticks in my mouth with my teeth, just bouncing them there, I wasn't even aware I was doing it when I got scolded for it. I was embarrassed and felt pretty bad cause I messed up their chopsticks. I'm so uncivilized lol it was terrible
well i read pens different ...
I am appreciating my fork more and more.
dog just doesn't taste the same with forks :D
+Brandi Eckert There's a ton of etiquette that comes with a fork and knife too
+Wanda Ricca True, however forks don't have anything to do with spirituality or ancestry (in America at the very least.) The additional layers of importance are foreign to me but very interesting/cool at the same time. I'll always try to remember and follow these rules. :)
me too
Lol at 0:11 "for killing people I mean For eating"
Just started using them good to know what not to do, thanks guys
Can't stop laughing on the last part XDXD
great video, I was scolded each time for dropping chopsticks and was supposed to hit myself on the leg with them before picking them back up
I just hope that they can forgive foreign ppl like me when we don’t know it n do it not intentionally 😣😬😬
The double chen show. I LOVE THAT.
I love this video! It's really helpful and funny as well haha, thank you!
My family line if any of this happens:
Grandma:smacks person
Mom:nothing
Me:gets annoyed I have no idea why it just does
I like the sayings you provided for every mistake with chopsticks.
Haha Michael has homicide on his mind....
I still remember at 7th grade that we have an activity. We are going to use chopsticks, who gets the most peas has the highest score but they used the back of the chopsticks I keep telling my teacher but he doesn't give a F*ck!
And that's why my classmates have 100+ peas picked up by doing it the wrong way >:(
And that's a big NO-NO!
Hilarious, yet educational! Kudos!
The fact that you guys did all the don'ts😂. Thanks for the video though
