    I went to the restaurant today. He told me that when vice media came to him they said that they were going to use actors to taste the sushi. He refused and requested that the camera man was the one to taste it. This explains why he’s not the most animated guy.

      If this is true, well that really explains everything. It was a smart move for the chef to let him taste his food to really get a genuine judgement, but his anxiety kinda ruined it though

    I worked in a sushi bar with a chef who trained under Jiro Ono. His take on eating sushi was; "It's your sushi, eat it the way that makes you happy."
    I like this philosophy. I've been enjoying sushi for 35 years now and have owned and operated 2 sushi bars.
    The one thing I would recommend to my customers is to not use chopsticks unless you are really good at them, otherwise there's a chance the sushi I worked hard at and they're paying for will end up on the floor.

      Let me ask you a question, the chef in the video says don't mix the wasabi in the soy sauce because the flavors should be separated, and usually the chef has already put wasabi in the roll. I am just getting into sushi and have been to some very good restaurants, and never have I seen a roll served with wasabi already in it. So if the wasabi is not already in the roll and you are not supposed to mix it in the soy sauce, what is the best most authentic way to put the wasabi on the roll? BTW, I am very much aware that this is a perfect example of a first world problem.

    • @michaelg.294
      @michaelg.294 2 роки тому +23

      @@davidsheriff9274 Some sushi chefs do put wasabi in the rolls, but most don't. It really depends on the sushi bar.
      I personally add the wasabi to my soy sauce (although my wife says that I put soy sauce in my wasabi).
      As for tradition, putting a little wasabi on the fish and then dipping the fish, not the rice, into the soy sauce is considered proper.

  • @asdfrozen

    I think these "rules" are less of a snobbish thing and more of a common sense thing from the culture's perspective. Here's an analogy: Let's say you were served spaghetti with meat sauce and a side salad. If you were to mix the spaghetti and salad together, people would think you're being silly. That's the same thing with mixing together the wasabi, ginger, and soy sauce. You don't use a spoon and knife to eat the noodles and salad, you use a fork. Similarly, there's the natural way to use your fingers/utensils and the silly way when it comes to sushi. You don't douse your salad in ranch, you just use enough for a light coating on each leaf. Similarly, you don't dunk the sushi in soy sauce.

    • @trooooololol
      @trooooololol 9 років тому +33

      Good analogy. Ppl who want to eat sushi the way they please should do it at home with their $5 sushi pack from Walmart or a cheap establishment. When you're dining in a high class sushi bar like in the video, following the rules should be a no-brainer.

      I totally agree. On top of it being a cultural perspective, there is the practicality of it all - the general population eats the sushi a specific way because it makes the most sense. Dipping it sushi (rice) side down only results in soggy, over salted rice that falls apart before it even hits your mouth. And as u are placing the sushi fish-side down on ur tongue (as u have it inverted for dipping already), the fish and soy sauce are the first to hit ur tongue. That means u actually taste more of what u are eating. I have learned this from watching a similar video many years ago and can attest to the fact that it really does make it more enjoyable.

    For all those bitching about "eating sushi however they damn well please rawr grah grrr!": you need to understand that at a high-end restaurant, where you have professional master sushi chefs preparing the food, yes, there is a right and wrong way. When you go to an establishment like that, it is not to simply eat your food how you feel comfortable eating it, but to appreciate what is considered an art form to the master preparing it for you. You appreciate it for what it is. If that doesn't float your boat, by all means take your business elsewhere because the chefs at these establishments do not need or want people who choose to disrespect their art. Of course nobody should get in your business about how you eat it at any normal restaurant, but places like the one pictured here require a higher level of respect. A lot of these restaurants don't even like to serve foreigners because of the blatant disrespect coming from their entitled mantra of "the customer is always right". In Japan, the sushi master is always right, and if you don't like that then go to the boat sushi bar down the road.

    • @jdn94
      @jdn94 9 років тому +43

      Lol. I'm dying at those comments that are saying that they'll eat it however they want and shit cause they're paying. Well basically they'll waste their money at a fine establishment by fucking up their food. Dousing sushi, especially otoro, in soy sauce is like asking for your filet mignon to be over cooked. The thing is is that Japanese people, like the every day Japanese man, isn't all formal about it and eats it how he pleases. People just get butthurt that there are apparently rules to something they've culturally appropriated.

    Sushi chef is so nice and charming! Amateur eater is quite boring and not engaged at all. He seemed bored and intimidated by the food he's eating. lol They should have chosen someone who actually ENJOYS eating sushi and had more insight on what their eating from this epic sushi chef. He looked completely unimpressed and looked like he wanted to vomit after every bite.

      To be honest, I took it as him being camera shy. I often act like that if someone is taking a video or a picture. Of course, that doesn't mean he is camera shy, but it doesn't necessarily mean that he's unimpressed or not enjoying it. It could be a whole lot of different things, ranging from all of it simply being new, to simply not knowing what to think of the various tastes. Even someone who enjoys sushi in general may not like all kinds, after all.
      Also, the point may have been to have someone who doesn't have much insight, as the video is about how to eat sushi. It's likely they were trying to find someone the audience may relate to. That's all just my opinion though.

    Do you eat hamburgers with chopsticks? Or pour ketchup in pho? Sure, you can eat food however you like, but there are cultural norms on how certain food is consumed, even for those people who are defiant in claiming that you should "eat food however you like".

    • @ratleader90

      +JoeBlo2 Yeah, a lot of people believe that this kind of behavior is an act of rebellion, but actually they are being loud and disrespectful. Of course i'm gonna be a slob when i'm eating at home, but when i'm at a formal event or a fancy restaurant i'll follow the rules.

    • @LonganoCantCant

      This is the most ridiculous comparison. We don't eat hamburgers with chopsticks because it is almost impossible to. Not even the Japanese follow these many rules when they eat. Only people of "high class" are this absurd when it comes to eating sushi.

      I eat hamburgers with chopsticks, and eat ketchup in pho.
      I eat ginger on sushi, and mix it with soy sauce.
      I eat ice cream with forks, and put yogurt on toast.
      At one point, a man decided to put meat between buns, ginger in vinegar, and ice cream in waffle cones. Culture is constantly evolving; there is no such thing as a cultural norm, but there is such thing as a cultural innovation. Eat things if they are new and novel, because that's how the "norm" becomes the norm.

    Not accurate at all. I've traveled to japan so i know that this is the improper way of eating sushi. You want to stab the fish with your chopstick and wave it around your head to air dry the surface of it. After that, you pour a cup of soy sauce for yourself and let the sushi marinate in it for a few minutes. After that, you need to savor it by eating it in as many bites as possible. It's like munchies doesn't even do their research.

    For everyone saying the American's have no respect for other cultures:
    There is a reason why America is considered the melting pot. It is made up of people from different backgrounds and ethnicities. This being said, please do not generalize. Yes there are ignorant people in America just like everywhere else in the world. For example (note that this is simply just an example and not meant to be aimed at any country, area, or group of people): One of my close friends who is African American has been studying in South Korea for about 4 years now. He has told me stories about how he is sometimes looked down upon, and even cursed at/called names because of his skin color. However, at the same time he has made plenty of friends there that treat him nicely. My point: Ignorance is world-wide.

      The New York restaurant is a block from my apartment building, and I’ve eaten there several times, once with Chef Yasuda himself preparing my meal. A special treat indeed, and worth every cent. I’ve been eating sushi for decades, and learned something new watching this.

      Str8 up. Reading some of the comments I was expecting the dude to look openly uncomfortable and act extremely awkwardly. This is what you get when the typical American encounters someone who is soft spoken. It literally doesn't compute in their brains that you don't have to be super fucking loud ALL THE TIME. Dude was just quiet and attentive. Quietness doesn't = lack of personality, Attentiveness doesn't = awkwardness.

      Đức Hùng Nguyễn Being a sushi chef or master is not about making stuff look beautiful, that's what a normal chef does in a fancy restaurant. It's all about balancing the taste and knowing your ingredients. Taste is way more important than the looks of food, especially for Japanese people, I know because i live in Japan.

      If you're a sushi chef you must be an amateur one if all you care about is looks. Like bringitonTV said, its about balancing the tastes, not the looks. Only amateur chefs like you focus on the looks to mask the taste since you probably don't know wtf you're doing with the sushi.
