Decent amount of misinformation here and missing information that I will help fill in. First off, boost is not power, it's simply a restriction of airflow. So more boost doesn't always mean more power. Secondly, a 2.7 pulley isn't going to degrade the life of the m62 (the supercharger on the 05-07 cobalts). You won't go through blowers by running a smaller pulley. Also, if you are dropping pulley sizes down to a 2.8 for example, you need to run 60lb injectors. The stock injectors don't allow you to drop down in pulley sizes without running out of injector/fuel. Your injector duty cycles / IDC's will be way to high. You want to keep your IDC's under 80%, so if you want to run a smaller pulley, upgrade to 60lbers. The best mod overall for cash to power, is 80lber injectors, ev1 harness, and a tune (smaller the pulley the more power you will gain from this) on e85. The biggest gains these cars get is while being on e85. You don't need anything "special" to run e85, just a 80lb injectors and a tune. As far as "bypassing your stock heat exchanger" for an aftermarket one, it's a bad idea. You are much much better off running BOTH. Best bet would be to run the dual pass end plate along with both of them, but if you don't want to take off the intake manifold, then you run both the stock heat exchanger and the aftermarket one. This allows the system to have more coolant. The more coolant you have, the longer it will take to heat up. This will help keep your iat2's lower as mentioned, but it will also help with heat soak. Think about having a pot of boiling water, the more water you have in the pot the longer it will take to boil. Same concept goes for the heat exchangers. When you have more coolant in the system, it's going to take longer to heat up, aka it will keep the supercharger cooler easier. This is why the majority of cobalt owners run both the stock heat exchanger and an aftermarket heat exchanger. As far as making sure the "coolant is flowing", we have an intercooler pump under neath the car. If your intercooler pump isn't running, you can tap it with a hammer or rubber mallet to get it working again. Generally this is a short term fix, but it will last you until a new one comes in. They do fail frequently, but you can fix them extremely easily. By the way, I tune these vehicles for a living and many others. If you have any questions, feel free to reach us at facebook.com/SpecialtyTuning As a side note, my 06 cobalt has 217k miles and has seen everything from nitrous, methanol injection, the tvs1320 and every bolt on they make for these cars. Original motor and transmission. With the right tuning, these cars will last you a long time. Go e85 and make some real power :)
Hey thanks for the awesome info! I'm going to pin this to help SS owners. Myself ( Austin channel owner) don't have very much experience on these cars or info to provide, I'm the import dude haha! I'll have Mike take a look at this post and maybe you could give him an E-Tune some time! :P
Thanks for the pin! If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I've been playing with these cars for the last 10 years or so now. I have both the LSJ and the LNF and absolutely love them. One thing I should mention, is that canned tunes from companies like ottp and zzp are absolute garbage. The companies themselves are good and they do great work in person, but the generic half assed tunes they ship out to customers are horrible. I have saved so many cobalts from the brink of death from these things that I recommend everyone get a custom tune from a reputable tuner near you, or one that will travel to your location. HPTuners is the software that we use, I would highly recommend looking into it if you are interested in doing further mods. Thanks again for the pin and feel free to give our facebook page a like over at facebook.com/SpecialtyTuning Our website should be up and running later on this week, it's currently under construction to add a parts page :)
Zach Mullins Hey man, I may be buying a ss/sc cobalt here soon. Could you toss me some things to look out for pre purchase? I’ve ridden in the car before but I’ve never driven it. I will obviously test drive it before I buy though. Also I live in Iowa, do you know where any common rust spots are?
First mod anyone should do to these cars is steal an arm rest from a regular cobalt/g5 and bolt it in. All the holes are already there, it makes it way more comfortable for longer drives and you can put stuff into it. Best pick and pull trip ever lol
My mod recommend list in order: 1. Air box mod (same gains same noise as CAI) 2. 2.9-3.0" pulley, bigger injectors and a tune (more power) 3. Dual Pass end plate for intake manifold (helps cool IAT2 temps better) 4. Rotated motor mount (helps get power to the ground) 5. Spherical trailing control arm bushings for front lower control arms. (improves handling) If you want serious power I would look at smaller pulleys used in combo with E85 (need even bigger injectors) or methanol/water injection. The exhaust isn't really that restrictive on the M62 blower. I am running a methanol/water injected TVS base model Cobalt LS.
Handles way better than it did I can tell you that much. Before when it was stock (remember base model) the suspension was loose and floaty feeling. Not real confidence inspiring at higher speeds. I don't know if you have heard of John Powell out of Canada but they make some kick ass parts for Cobalt's. At this point my suspension is fully upgraded to the spec of the TC Cobalts + some extra goodies like YYZ springs, Konis in the rear, and trailing contol arm bushings. I just need to upgrade my brakes now! Idk if you go on css.net at all but here is a link to my build thread if you are interested. www.cobaltss.net/forums/2-2l-l61-performance-tech-45/jdbaugh1-official-build-thread-321284/
JD B God damn you've put tons of work into this thing! Mikes been back and forth between turbo swapping it or just keeping it supercharged. Mikes excited to read up on the build thread and get some good ideas with more suspension mods. Thanks for the link awesome build!
Hey thanks a lot. Yeah the original plan was just to throw an M62 supercharger kit and leave everything else stock for a while. But the mod bug bit me and that lasted about 6 months lol. I'm just happy to see other people, like you, enjoying these cars for what they are. For the reputation they have the sure are underrated. Makes a really good sleeper though. Even people that know what's in it are surprised when I take them for a ride. What does Mike ultimately want to do with the car? Supercharger is really good for autocross where it is very handy to have a nice level torque curve. Turbo is better for going fast without robbing as much power like the SC does through the belt. But the K04 are low-end to mid-range torque monsters so they are tougher on the drive-train. Basically if speed in a straight line is what is important, turbo it. If he wants more even torque throughout the rev range then SC is better. The only way to get close to turbo power with M62 is methanol or E85. The TVS is a lot of fun though lol!
The #1 mod should be long tube header and down pipe.... true the stock exhaust isnt bad but the exhaust manifold is horrible and there is a nice amount of power to be picked up from the header on the lsj. That was my first mod and made a massive difference
i had one back in the day. first thing i did was put an engine brace on it for the wheel hop. it was a small shock absorber (basically) and came with brackets that bolted straight to the passenger engine mount. this eliminated the wheel hop. 2 things. 1, i was told they had wheel hop issues because the motor mount bushings were too soft. they made them soft on purpose to eliminate vibration transfer to the chassis. 2, you could also just not get on the throttle too hard in first gear and simply avoid the hops by driving "better"... but whats the fun in that? oh, the kit was made by Ingalls-Stiffy and is called a torque damper
Michael Carr no actually, it was a bit too beat up... ended up with my 3rd Civic. 02 Si Hatch this time. currently pulling my hair out trying to get sponge/air out of brakes.
Great video man! I just bought my 07 LSJ a few months ago and sure enough the IC pump is out lol. Also seeing so coolant leakage from the H/E and I think you might have just convinced me to just leave it and get the S3. Keep the vids up!
Thanks man & no she was not leaking prior. I had the OEM setup plus the ZZP HE working together with my factory HE for the past year or so & everything was perfect, my IA2 temps were avg 15 degrees above ambient at cruising speeds however I wanted even more cooling mods so I did the ZZP dual pass & option b & that's when the slow internal leak started. We have it narrowed down to either the ZZP dual pass endplate or one of the cores may have been damaged during install as it's a super slow leak.
I have all first 5 mods in your video plus a ton of others. I installed dual pass last week & now I have a very slow coolant leak in my intake manifold ! My tech & I have been chasing this leak for a couple weeks now I'm hundreds of dollars of labor in but we've got to get it fixed ! I'm running 7-10 degrees over ambient with my ZZP HE & dual pass but this leak is killing me.
Was it leaking prior to the HE install? i would start looking at the lines you pulled off and make sure everything is tight or snugged up. Sounds like you've got an awesome build going!
Captain Rudy 4021 you push the stock blower more then the 2.8 safely. It would be more efficient to get a bigger blower but you honestly don’t need to build the block if you go less then the 2.8. It’s all in the tune and making sure the car is happy 😊
Hey bro, how do you have your coils adjusted?? I have a 05 cobalt & im having an extremely hard time finding a comfortable medium. your balt looks super good btw too!!!
Hey bro! The coil overs ride quality depends on the spring rating of the coils you bought, Another thing you can do is adjust the dampening on the coils which will be at the top hat of your coils. Mike has his dampeners set at a lower level which means fewer clicks/turns of the knob which gives a softer ride! mess with the dampeners and give it a shot!
I have a 07 ss with a 2.9 zzp pulley a zzp cobalt air intake zzp intercooler a exhaust and a tune on pump gas 93 pushing 250 hp I actually beat my cousin 08 ss turbo version of course his was stock just had a downpipe and exhaust s/c cobalt move as soon as you get a tune bro
To ANYONE with a cobalt who wants to do mods, you heard it in the video, go to zzp. they are lifesavers and make beautiful parts. anyone with a cobalt needs to know what zzp is
You're making 14psi max. Correct about a new header, if you add the exhaust too. Adding a CAI requires a retune, you can definitely go lean otherwise. A 2.7 pulley will not ruin the blower either.
if ya guys ever want to borrow my suction cup mount for your GoPro , i dont mind , just let me know if so. Also by the way sweet video mike and you guys , really diging them
Hey Guys, so i got this intake for my SC but it seems a little odd looking, I've been looking online to ensure its the same one but so far they look the same. can you guys make a video on how to install it? or if you know a link with instruction that would be awesome! thanks !
Lehi Gomez I believe you have to install it from the fender liner on the driver side wheel. so take off the plastic and crank the wheel so you have as much room as possible and bam! should be straight forward from then on 😎 goodluck!
why would you have to bypass it? You could go out of the stock into the new one, and then out of the new one into the pump. It would essentially just adding it inline.
Will J Mike hasn't thrown any code on his. you can buy an o2 spacer and give that a shot. It's worked on tons of cars. you might also need a tune to disable your rear o2 sensor. 😎
Marcos Martinez our 5sp is geared like a 6sp, I can do 60mph in 2nd gear, also 5th gear goes well over 160mph. When cruising about 65mph in 5th is around 2000rpm and I get 30mpg!
Im so lost about these cars right now is it fuckin supercharged or turbocharged both 2 totally different things I'd rather the supercharger but I thought these only had turbos
Got a question for the people with lowered cobalt ss'. I have an 05 ss lowered on bc coilovers. The passenger side pops out frequently. I have zzp stage 1 axles. Will rotated mounts prevent the axle from popping out? I don't want to raise the car.
Like you know, like you know. Because you know and then you know. I noticed there's no tuner or reprogram. Those mods are great but if you tuned it it would change everything and it'd the best bang for your buck. Why wouldn't you have just done that from the start? Cause you know like you know, and then you know and you know.
Just bought a 06 cobalt ss supercharged for 2850 needs maf / Map sensor and two new tires lol not from me. Previous owner was 17 I'm surprised I didn't have to tow it ya know we were all that age once only we had escort gts and if we were really cool had the probe gt lol I will be watching more videos as I know not a damn thing except for it goes alot faster alot quicker then my honda accord lol

Daniel Pajazetovic I live in Iowa too! Anyways I need to get my car tuned but dnt know where. It's running e85 and a bunch of other upgrades
Zach Mullins I wish I knew where to get my car tuned good at a farley reasonable price. Right now I have zzp tune.

Lol nice
Did this to my ss and it is by far the best mod I’ve done to the interior
i bought a 2006 ss a few months ago and i swear the guy i bought it from watched your video because this car has the EXACT same mods as your car LOL

Back in 2014 when I had my redline, I bought the stage 2 from zzp and had a cold intake and a cat back exhaust! It was super fun
I watched this video a year ago thinking I could never get everything in this video. Now I have more, and never expected it
if he says ya know one more time i’m gonna kick a baby
Ya know??
My boss gave me a 2007 ss cobalt!! Im just leaning how cool these cars are. Can't wait to start working on it.

keep the videos up man! very soon I'm buying a cobalt ss and really enjoying the videos they will help the start up of my build!
Kinnyon Savage Right on man! Glad you're enjoying our videos. Are you getting the supercharger SS or the Turbo'd cobalt?
supercharged all the way!!
Kinnyon Savage Hell yeah! they scream when you get on them!
thats what I'm excited for once i get back from spring break I'm going to get it!!
Kinnyon Savage Report back when you get it! :D your gonna love it!

Andrew Armstrong lol of course. Hey the s3 helps s bunch!
Hey my buddy rebuilds IC pumps, 80$, 40$ rebate if you send your old one back. add him on facebook, Troyt Sweitzer
Andrew Armstrong a new pump is $80 from zzp, and well worth it.
I’m late on this but just bought a turbo 2009 manual, ss. It has the stage 1 gm tune and that’s it so all stock lol
I got the zzp long tube as well with a high flow cat in all 3 inch. Only takes roughly 2 hours if everything is not rusted together
betrayerfilms yeah we had some pretty stuck bolts, and lack of sleep didn't help either haha
Driven NW mine was that way as well.
i live in arlington wa (were this was filmed) i drive the roads at the beginning all the time
I didn’t notice the youknow. But the pspspspspspspspsps thing
Thanks man & no she was not leaking prior. the stock suspension is pretty good imo
You're correct, its good for stock. once you take it to the track or back roads you can start to feel the body roll.
@@drivennw2416 So if I have no body roll, then I have an upgraded suspension? How can I determine what kind it is?
Good video dude, will sub!
NinjaxBart Thanks man! I'm already sub'd to ya! appreciate it!
I have all first 5 mods in your video plus a ton of others. I installed dual pass last week & now I have a very slow coolant leak in my intake manifold ! Was it leaking prior to the HE install? i would start looking at the lines you pulled off and make sure everything is tight or snugged up. Sounds like you've got an awesome build going!
Catless? Where do you live to pass inspection?
I wouldn't do smaller than a 2.8 pulley unless you get an aftermarket supercharger and build up the block.
Captain Rudy 4021 you push the stock blower more then the 2.8 safely. It would be more efficient to get a bigger blower but you honestly don’t need to build the block if you go less then the 2.8. It’s all in the tune and making sure the car is happy 😊
Run 2.6 for 2 years perfectly safe. It’s all in how you drive it.
What about a new body kit? Plan to put one on? I am, at some point, soon I hope.
G1 Smokescreen I think mike would like to do some aero stuff like splitter and side skirts etc.
Driven NW That would be cool though.
G1 Smokescreen yeah should make it look more aggressive 😈
Driven NW Oh, most definitely gonna try & make my Cobalt look that way, for sure.
Diggin ths static intro "push it"
How did this video get this many fews. Somebody talking about what they did to the car with no content just driving around
My car has a cold air intake and it whines real nice
Hey bro, how do you have your coils adjusted?? I have a 05 cobalt & im having an extremely hard time finding a comfortable medium. your balt looks super good btw too!!!
Hey bro! The coil overs ride quality depends on the spring rating of the coils you bought, Another thing you can do is adjust the dampening on the coils which will be at the top hat of your coils. Mike has his dampeners set at a lower level which means fewer clicks/turns of the knob which gives a softer ride! mess with the dampeners and give it a shot!
Driven NW im gonna have to try a softer dampening soon then, cause i have megans as well. I subbed!
Hell yeah! it could even be cheaper tires. :D
But keep going with good vids bro
Alejandro Vergara Yeah Mike desperately needs a tune to get full potential. The s/c cobalt are awesome track cars too.
250 on stock injectors?
To ANYONE with a cobalt who wants to do mods, you heard it in the video, go to zzp. they are lifesavers and make beautiful parts. anyone with a cobalt needs to know what zzp is

fun cars! test drive it to make sure that's the car you want :P
Don’t you need to get your car tuned before you get a cold air intake? That’s what I’ve heard
“The smaller the pulley the more boost” YOU WANT THE LIWEST BOOST POSSIBLE ON S/c cars
Could I put a ss supercharger in my Pontiac g5 gt
Yeah
love my megan coilovers on my 06 LT
Roger Leadbeter Hell yeah, Mikes digging his too!
Thx for info
Anything to worry about motor wise?
you know you know you know you know
But, do you know?
Thanks for the info.
Ryan Clark we got you buddy 😎
#1 upgrade: Get a turbo
Blorox Cleach a turbo that feeds the supercharger
Are the stock manifolds suppose to be crackes
I have Injen CAI that came with my Stage 2 kit.
Do your coilovers feel ruff? Like do they they make the roof more bumpy?
So I have a chevy cobalt ss 06 but I live in California do you think I can get a new set of exhaust manifolds like the ones you said in the video?
You're making 14psi max.
Correct about a new header, if you add the exhaust too.
Adding a CAI requires a retune, you can definitely go lean otherwise.
A 2.7 pulley will not ruin the blower either.
Thanks for the notice on the CAI.
if ya guys ever want to borrow my suction cup mount for your GoPro , i dont mind , just let me know if so. Also by the way sweet video mike and you guys , really diging them

what's up bro great video... what muffler do you have on your SS it sound good
grizzlydean01 Thanks man! it's zzp 3in! we have an install vid of it in a different video check it out 😎
It sounds good? Really doesnt couldnt imagine driving an hour with that annoying humming in the back
good info thanks
Hey man, you mentioned a guy austin? I bought a cobalt ss off an Austin.. Wonder if its the same guy lol
Can do more like maybe about the looks
There a great daily car fast and quick , and its stock 12psi

Hey Guys,
so i got this intake for my SC but it seems a little odd looking, I've been looking online to ensure its the same one but so far they look the same. can you guys make a video on how to install it? or if you know a link with instruction that would be awesome!

Lehi Gomez I believe you have to install it from the fender liner on the driver side wheel. so take off the plastic and crank the wheel so you have as much room as possible and bam! should be straight forward from then on 😎 goodluck!
thanks for the support! I'll give it a shot!
Lehi Gomez hopefully it goes smooth!
What brake system do u have stock still??
I thought when running the s3 HE you just put it inline with the other one?
jabob mayroal you have bypass the stock HE unless you buy the dual pass which uses both HE.
why would you have to bypass it? You could go out of the stock into the new one, and then out of the new one into the pump. It would essentially just adding it inline.
jabob mayroal Your correct, you can do it this way. Mike decided to not run the oem heat exchanger and opted for the bigger s3 core.
It will make it even Cooler.
5 things u hate nd love about your cobalt?
issa spork good idea! We'll have to do it!
Hey, I own a 08 SS TC and I want it a bit louder and more gurgly, not ricey. Any suggestions?
Rayne Leaf Catless downpipe.
My 06 SS Has a 2.5" magnaflow with a large catalytic converter, louder with no restriction, and will still pass inspection!
what size are you tires on cobalt??
aditrap 225 40 18s! firestone firehawks defiantly recommend them!
Tnx bro, and cool info about the coolant on the heat exchanger i didn't know about that, i think mine its broke
Anytime bro!
Not me with a cobalt 👀
hows your exhaust do for throwing o2 codes. my buddy got a high flow cat and it throws o2 codes left and right
Will J Mike hasn't thrown any code on his. you can buy an o2 spacer and give that a shot. It's worked on tons of cars. you might also need a tune to disable your rear o2 sensor. 😎
How'd you put an aftermarket shift knob on?
take two screw drivers and pry the old off, then you can out whatever you want on
What size pulley you running
Mrplayajose a zzp 3.0 pulley!
First mod. Turn it into a rwd goblin.
Is that a 6 speed transmission because i feel like my saturn vue 2.2 is missing one gear like he needs that any suggestions
Marcos Martinez it’s a 5 speed! Only way to change that is changing the trans :/
Marcos Martinez our 5sp is geared like a 6sp, I can do 60mph in 2nd gear, also 5th gear goes well over 160mph. When cruising about 65mph in 5th is around 2000rpm and I get 30mpg!
i have a full custom 3in exhuast in mine and what pulley would you recommend?
id go with a 2.8 pulley. seen great results with that one!
Driven NW would I need a new belt with the 2.8 or will it work with the stock?
You will need a different belt!
Before it starts. 2.8 pulley 60 lbs Injectors cai exhaust and bigger heat exchanger. Basicly all the the bolt ons
Im so lost about these cars right now is it fuckin supercharged or turbocharged both 2 totally different things I'd rather the supercharger but I thought these only had turbos
What song is that?
Static X “push it”
Do I have to get a tune after each mod?
christian larrea Mike doesn't have a tune! and still running strong. I'd get tune if you want to maximize power
long tube headers
Donald Tabor Tis true, long they are!
i just got the 3in catted down pipe from zz for my park ave ultra looking at the headers now
nice video
Donald Tabor Do it!! it will sound awesome!
Do you know a good intake manifold for the 2.4
Got a question for the people with lowered cobalt ss'. I have an 05 ss lowered on bc coilovers. The passenger side pops out frequently. I have zzp stage 1 axles. Will rotated mounts prevent the axle from popping out? I don't want to raise the car.
factory box dyno proven better, in a redline anyway
Because its tuned for it, people need to retune when they change this out, for sure.
I don’t know
Like you know, like you know. Because you know and then you know.
I noticed there's no tuner or reprogram. Those mods are great but if you tuned it it would change everything and it'd the best bang for your buck. Why wouldn't you have just done that from the start?
Cause you know like you know, and then you know and you know.
Ya know....ya know.........yaknow
Lemme buy it
steele polk how much you offering boi! 😎
