I had a Defender 110 for a year lease, simultaneously with my 2019 4Runner TRD OffRoad Premium. The Defender was excellent in nearly every capacity, better power, better interior technology etc. It made me wish there was a body-on-frame 4x4 similar to the 4Runner, but with the modern tech and luxury like a Defender. Finally the GX550 unveiled, and I am now the happy owner of the GX550 Overtrail+.
I loved the Defender and highly recommend it, but I just need the technical trail crawling capability and articulation of a lifted/modded body-on-frame, solid rear axle 4x4, because I use it for offroad adventures and camping and I do like to explore very technical trails that I had to avoid in the Defender. That is just a personal preference, and a very expensive preference, so overall, the Defender is mor I have already lifted my GX550 (2.50" front, .75" rear) and have installed 35" Toyo Open Country tires, and she can go everywhere!
I absolutely loved the Defender, and it inspired my transition from my 2019 4Runner to a GX550 OT+, because it raised my standards for interior tech lol.

With Defender, even a washer fluid line has heated. What I am trying to say is Defender has many little things here and there to make the experience luxury. Therefore, there are more things to go wrong. People may mislead the term reliability. Maybe there are different vehicles better for high mileage, but I don't think Defender is that bad. I intent to buy Defender 130 and heard about the reliability so I did a lot of research. Turn out it's a lot better than what people said, and most of those people haven't even test drive it, let alone lease or own it.

I'm also in Orlando. Bought my 130 from St. Pete though as the Orlando dealers were charging markups too on Defenders back in 2023 when I bought. So far 1.5 years in, its been flawless and I love it. I really wanted to like the GX when it came out. I still think it 'looks' better. But once you get in it... the story changes. I dont find it to be more premium at all over the 130 with the larger screen and full leather interior. The engine and chassis balance is night and day better in the Defender (especially since I'll never go hard core rock crawling in either). I only did a quick stint down I4 and then the Turnpike in the GX on my test drive... its fine, but it doesn't feel as confident on road at all.
If you got the pockets to spend 80k to go rock crawling... go GX. If as they said in the video its light offroad work at most... there simply isn't a better all rounder on the market for an SUV that doesn't look/feel like a car based crossover.

Are we not going to talk about how it's completely unacceptable for BOTH of these vehicles to not treat their vehicle underbody? That's an insane amount of rust for both vehicles that could have been solved by $500 worth of pre-treatment from the factory instead of just paint. Sure both cars looks pretty, until you look underneath.

  • @wads80z
    @wads80z 5 годин тому +40

I test drove both of these vehicles and settled on (and bought) the Defender, for the reasons you guys mentioned. The road manners are just far better. The GX just feels BoF wallowy in comparison to the quicker steering, better riding, Land Rover. The only places I would disagree with this review are the rear leg room - the Lexus is noticeably tighter than the Defender in terms of leg/knee room, and I found the GX interior boring for an $80k car. It might as well be in a TX or an ES. Nice, yes - but it has zero personality. It's also hard to swallow the dealer mark-ups Lexus are asking for right now. The Lexus feels like it would be hard to love, although the risk with JLR reliability is the Defender might be an easy car to hate! I also have an old LX460 to handle the really rough stuff, so I like to think we have best of both worlds covered.

Absolutely love my 2023.5 Defender 130. Its now 1.5 years old and its been flawless. I do like the GX but it just isnt premium enough for its price point. In the video it seems like the Defender is more utilitarian. Maybe it has to do with the trim levels, but my 130 has leather all over the place, and a much bigger screen than shown here. The quality of the materials feels premium, more on par with what I've seen and felt in the Lexus LX. than I've seen with the Lexus GX, which I'm sorry still feels barely more premium than the Land Cruiser. I know the JLR joke about how unreliable they are. But check out the TFL video on land rover reliability. The TL:DR is they're not all created equal, and the Defender in this generation is probably one of the most reliable things they've ever produced. Couple that with Lexus/Toyota's falling reliability I would go so far as to say as they are damn near the same. Of course when I was buying in 2023, I got a 7 year extended JLR warranty for peace of mind. But IMO its well worth it to have the better driving experience.
One thing I will say that the video doesn't mention, While the Defender seems to be holding value relatively well on the used car market. There is no question that the GX will probably retain resale value way better due to (perceived - yet unproven) expectations of long term reliability.
I've always said, 'affording' a vehicle's lease payment isn't the whole story when it comes to high end cars. Being able to eat the depreciation and cover the cost of keeping it on the road is the hard part - and the part you gotta determine if the experience is worth the hit to your pocket.
For me if that 130 can comfortably make it to year 5 without issue (1.5 so far all good)... or at least with only minor issues that the dealer can easily remedy... I'm a happy camper.
See ya'll in the school pick up line! Maybe we can chat up the GX/Defender over a Hotdog at Costco soon :)

The reason the GX is still a solid rear axle is when you lift one side, you push the other side down. The Defender will lift tires all day. While the moms on the east coast the the mid-west may only drive to Costco, out west its not unusual to see a Lexus on the trail. I have a GX that pulls a trailer, and I do offroad it. Its my only motorized vehicle when Im traveling so it has to be reliable. Drifting a GX is snow is pure joy. Solid rear axle is also why a GX behaves like a truck on road while a RR is significantly more planted. For a few more inches of articulation in situations you'll find yourself once every 2 years, that's a massive compromise to make. In the end, the GX simply isn't worth waiting a year for - and given the recent Toyota/Lexus drop in quality (not just the V6, its the Tacoma too) I'm not sure that the price of admission is worth it.

We were seriously looking at the GX550 until the iForce engine debacle. It is happening (in small numbers) w/Lexus. Plus the GX550 quality and luxury < 460/470 product. It’s a step down. This was a good winter driving comparison of two great vehicles that are somewhat problematic - mostly due to the unknowns. Although the Defender has been out long enough and seems to be decent for reliability.

We buy cars and keep them for 10+ years. We ended up going with the GX OT+ (for a multitude of reasons) over a Defender & even a G550. To name a few, we do a lot of towing; a body on frame vehicle puts less stress on the drivetrain than a unibody when towing. Unfortunately, the Defender depreciates like a rock & as the GX has not been redesigned in 13 years, I have a feeling that will not be the case with the GX. As an L405 owner, if I have to deal with Land Rover problems, it needs to be much nicer than the competition. The Defender has a cooler interior in my opinion, but it is not worth the headache like our Full-size rover is. The GX is surprisingly refined in comfort mode, but I absolutely understand what they mean "washboard effect" lol. I was also very surprised by the NVH levels of the GX. There are very few vibrations transmitted through the floor when driving on mediocre pavement & wind noise is less than the G550 (despite the similar upright windshield). The 4.0 in the G550 is proving once again, to have the similar issues as their older 4.6 M278 & 5.5 M157 engines. All the scare about the 3.4 TTV6 Toyota engine was not a design flaw, but rather a manufacturing issue that Toyota took care of quickly. (I can count on 1 hand how many other manufacturers would take responsibility for poor manufacturing). As for the Defender 3.0, it is too new to tell how it will turn out. I can tell you the 5.0 Defender with the AJ133 still has the inherit design flaws it had back in 2010-2012 with the L322. (Except it's even more strained making more power now). Overall, if you're like many who lease cars every 3 years go ahead and get the Defender. However, if you need a dependable workhorse that also doubles are a luxury hauler, the GX is the best on the market!

I put an order down on GX. Biggest cons are how noisy it is, slow it feels (but still effortless enough), and piss small gas tank. Ride quality is pretty bad but 100% forgivable being a body on frame car using springs. The body roll is more excessive than the Defnder which feels a lot less like a body on frame than the GX (which is good for Defender It behaves more like. Acar)Interior usability is also piss poor.

Also I'd point out that the harshness of the Defender, however minimal over big bumps and the 'bottoming out' as was mentioned, is a lot more pronounced/felt in the 'lifted' off road height. It's more capable, but you feel it more. In the conditionsi n the video, normal mode would have sufficed (it was clearly in lifted mode) and in that normal mode, It feels like it rides ont he cloud... soaks up bumps IMO better than the GX Premium + (not OT) that I test drove.

My assumption is it will add an additional 2 - 3 degrees of approach which is not great but much more competitive than the outgoing model and definitely better than the GX460 (which I own and love and have added a 1/2 lift that got similar results).

The more I look at this GX, the more certain I am it is the reason they got rid of the Nightshade 4Runner in 2021. The two vehicles are so incredibly similar in terms of look, daily capability, and luxury (I would hazard the materials in the Nightshade outclassed the current Lexus GX and at a price $30,000 cheaper with a useful liftgate that hides the glass). 5th gen 4Runner also looks shockingly better underneath than this GX they reviewed after more than a year’s ownership.
In the TNGF world the GX is clearly the best, avoids the hybrid battery nonsense, avoids the anemic/buzzy turbo 4 of the “Landcruiser” and turbo V6 issues the Tundra has, and has better towing capacity.
Yet it still feels like Toyota is screwing up with all of these 4Runner, Land Cruiser, and GX trim lines at these ridiculous prices. I’m still waiting to hear a legitimate reason to buy the Landcruiser, which is obviously going to drop in value more than the GX from the get-go. The romance is gone. Probably why a Toyota:Land Rover comparison is now even possible.

I test drove GX 550, it's more redefined but has the same kind of truck feel. When you want more refinement ride quality Defender is much better, Uni body construction provides that comfort over Truck body. The MPG on Lexus suck, but in todays world they could have done a better job with MPG.

There’s even a light comparison between it and the Defender 80, and they really show how despite the ride height disadvantage, the GXs ultimate compliance is far more capable.
I think saying 99% of these kind of trucks will be used for just mild off roading is a tad disingenuous. Maybe more like 90% lol. But there’s more overlanding enthusiasts with this kind of scratch who’ll use the whole or beyond of what these things can do.
