  • Today, I head out with my dad to Pyramid lake to try our hand at some striper. We haven't been to the lake since 2019, so we had to do a lot of searching for them. We lucked out into finding a few and had a decent day, trolling with A-rigs

    Nice to see you fish with Pops. I sure miss my Dad, my old fishing buddy. Trolling with downriggers reminds me of when he would take me after kokanee, raising and lowering the baits to meet the fish where they are.

    Always thought Pyramid was a primarily Lahonton trout fishery, never knew it had striped bass!🤔 Fantastic, now if i get skunked fishing for trout,i can go and try for stripers!!!👍 Really nice video, thanks for the show and tips👍👍

      Sorry to disappoint, but this is Pyramid Lake in Southern California, not the one in Nevada lol

      When we fished Pyramid Lake (So Cal) we caught trout, stripers, lgemouth bass, catfish & crappie/sunfish. Not on the same trip...back in the 80's.

      @@heynow4512 Haha, I appreciate the concern. Luckily for me, the limit is 10 striper per day no size limit for the lakes I fish (Pyramid, Castaic, Silverwood, DVL). I have a video coming out this week where we were checked by the Warden after a really fun day of fishing!

    Love seeing people fish with their pops. Is there a specific reason you run your downriggers straight back and not pointed to the sides? Im in the process of getting some downriggers too but not sure yet which way i want them to point

    • @smallrodsquad3539
      @smallrodsquad3539  23 дні тому +1

      Sorry for the late response. The only reason I run them straight back is because it is easier for me to grab the weights to clip on my line. If I wanted to spread out my lures more, I can definitely run them to the side and extend the arms, but on my boat, I have very little issues tangling lines with it the way I have it and I make very sharp turns. Hope that helps!

    nice video. I'm not familiar with Pyramid, from San Jose, but enjoyed the trip. I'm just getting interested in A-rig. Which downrigger release did you use? It must be strong? Which A-rig would you recommend for freshwater stripers?

    • @smallrodsquad3539
      @smallrodsquad3539  6 місяців тому

      We use a release called the chamberlain release. Highly recommend! Personally, I love the hogfarmer umbrella rigs. But G-Funk makes a good one too. In all honestly, I doubt it matters too much. The yum Flash mob jr. or regular flash mob are great options for half the price too!

    Nice video with pops and great catch!! Would you mind sharing how far you set the a rigs back? And what did you rig the a rigs with? Thanks and tight lines!!!

    • @smallrodsquad3539
      @smallrodsquad3539  6 місяців тому +1

      Thanks! I like to set the rigs back based off of time, rather than distance. That lets me know how far the rigs are away from me in relation to the fish finder. Typically I will set them back 20-25 seconds, however if the area I am fishing has very quick contour changes, I will only set them back 10 seconds. And if the fish are being super picky a certain day and won't bite, I'll set the rigs back even further, 40-50 seconds. Also, keep in mind that the further the rigs are behind you, the deeper they will sink depending on how heavy of jigheads you run and the speed you are trolling at. So even if your downrigger is sitting at 40 ft, the rig may be swimming along at 43-45ft. Depth control is super important. I like to use hogfarmer A-rigs because I like the quality of the build. However, the yum flash mob jr. rig is an amazing rig for half the price. Hope this helps!

      @@smallrodsquad3539 thanks man! I’ve trolled there a a ton and have had success but it’s always good to try other techniques. I’m the type to set them back further because I always feel the boat and motor will spook the fish. I set them back sometimes as far as 75-100 yards on picky bites or short strikes. Thanks for sharing and maybe I’ll catch you out there one day.
