    Hiya Andrew, just found this flicking through youtube. I had the pleasure of working with Rowen twice on his UK tours. This was originally in his show in 1984 long before IEM. Howard Goodhall his Musical Director operated a reel to reel revox machine behind and up above on a platform. Once the main couple of small stings played as individual tracks the main track would play and Rowen would keep up as its so well rehearsed. Later on during his MR Bean tour we had him at our theatre for a 2 week period. 1st week a production week where there was a rough idea of a basic show and they would rehearse for about 8 - 10 hours a day. 2 week was a split week with open production shows, with rehearsals and note calls the next day to see what the audience reacted to well and would be changed, cut or stayed the same. A lovely guy to work with and very interesting to see the planing phase of his mind. In the 84 tour he used to even drive the 40ft tour truck from venue to venue until he got to famous and the insurance was too much. Will try and find the pictures and share to your social media.

      Thank you so much for sharing these insights.
      As you would know in your role. Far beyond talent and just 'funny guy' I would picture Rowan as methodical, thoroughly researched and diligent beyond belief.
      Thanks again. Please share those pics!

    Dude, I’m 43, I grew up in the UK watching this stuff. There’s no “in ear” anything going on here. What you have is good old fashion rehearsing and copying. Old school 80/90’s sand up. R.A. was and always will be a genius.

      I believe this, too. Practice it enough, you get skilled at something. He could have been practicing for months just for this bit 😆 And would an ear piece really be an advantage? If it's prerecorded sound, muscle memory should be sufficient with practice.

    • @minhuang8848
      @minhuang8848 2 роки тому +2

      Yeah, I'd betcha. Remember thinking a lot about this back then and I don't have the answer, but it is at least partially rehearsed and performed to the track - most of which seems sensible, especially considering that there is a good bit of leeway - I mean, the video here is heavily desynced and I enjoyed myself somehow. Getting it right after diligent practice is definitely something people and especially actors do; just consider intricate one-takes with cues being yelled in a very specific rhythm... many actors pretty much need to be musicians and develop a good feel for consistency and pace. Even aligning themselves perfectly to the camera (see Brad Pitt and the underwater shot in Snatch's BTS footage) is something they have to deal with while a bunch of stuff is happening around them - and then you look at the physicality required, getting ripped, running for scenes (especially old men, jeez), having to sweat and pant and scream and what-have-you...
      This is actually surprisingly tame, all things considered, despite never failing to impress. No way he doesn't play drums in his spare time either, I bet he is a beast with that kick technique, lol. Relatable sweet-spot quadruple kick one-foot jitter action too.

    • @SailorYuki
      @SailorYuki 2 роки тому +1

      Yeah, it's just rehearsing. Any good actor rehearses their part for months before a performance. Same with any artist. In ears did exist back then but where really expensive and mostly for artists and bands that toured a lot.

      @jamesmason3348 2 роки тому +2

      I'd be very surprised if it was in ear. Most actors can recreate almost the same performance night after night. Having worked on many shows, it's surprising how the run time can be eerily consistent

    The only scenario that makes sense is live playback - obviously very well rehearsed (acting bits, stage movement, rhythm patterns, repetition and choreograpy) together with an off scene musician/drummer on a keyboard or a sampling synthesizer following Rowan (via monitor or directly from a wing) as rehearsed.

    I really enjoyed your reaction. Yes, this piece was brilliant and although I'm not a drummer, I have enough music sensibility that I too thought this was, as the Brits would say, Brilliant! I just did a quick search on the question "Does Rowan Atkinson play drums?" I can't say whether the on-line article is accurate or not, but on the web page "music instruments air dot calm"
    (put it all together and spell the last word correctly and you get the idea 😉) they said...
    "The answer is yes! Rowan Atkinson has been playing drums since the early 80s and he even has a drum set at his home in Oxfordshire. He has performed with some of the world’s top musicians, including Eric Clapton and Phil Collins. He is also an accomplished jazz drummer and often plays with his own jazz band."
    I've looked for any such videos on UA-cam and cannot find them. It could be that Mr. Atkinson feels that if such videos were to surface publicly that they would steal away from the humor of his Mr. Bean character playing drums as well as other musical shenanigans, such as conducting an orchestra, that Mr. Bean has engaged in.

  • @intherapy1

    this is a great example why air drumming is such a good way to learn drums. If you throw your arms in the right direction to music you'd be surprised how well you actually sound behind a real kit. my first drum kit was hi hat (pillow 1) and floor tom ( pillow 2), my snare (mattress) and kick drum (good old carpeted floor). Everything else I just imagined was there. Didn't touch a real kit till about a year into being a drummer. First time I did it went pretty well IMHO.

Many who engage in comments sections are not native English speakers (let alone writers), and many who are offering corrections are doing so with good intentions. This is especially true where the correction refers to homophones (as in this case), because in many cases the person being corrected has likely only ever HEARD the phrase in question, rather than having read it, and the resultant incorrect spellings easily understood. I see little, if any, evidence of any intent to offend the original commenter in Jim's reply (he specifically states that he agrees with the sentiment, for example, and ends with a "smiley" emoticon).

    Funny thing is, I can do this now for REAL! I have *FREEDRUM* which is a virtual drumkit. It has 4x usb flash stick sized midi sensors that has a gyro, proximity sensor and bluetooth inside of it to allow you to use it like a regular drumkit and you look like Rowan in this video but for REAL!! I pack it in my bass case when I jam with the band, just in case the drummer forgets his cymbals (which he did once) so I played the FREEDRUM kit as a practice for the guitarist to warm up with, it confused a few people walking past me at the studio! lol Then 45 minutes later the drummer returned with his cymbals and we jammed like usual. I used the FREEDRUM app on my phone which syncs to the midi sensors then I plugged my phone into an amp so it was loud enough for the guitarist to hear and play to with his amp.

    Rowan Atkinson is the absolute master of physical comedy in my opinion! I'm not a drummer (but a guitarist) and I found it absolutely hilarious - especially the cymbal muting.
    Takes a lot of skill to do this in time with no feedback - wonder if he had in-ears back then? Probably not, all just memorised.

As a lefty the kit only really worked left handed for me but every single gig there's pressure to use the house kit then complaining about having to switch up the mics... I'm sure plenty of lefties have put up with having to adapt everything to play a right handed kit for a peaceful life.

I have shared this video with other drummers in the last years, and they agree with me. The timing in his eyes when the "cat" is on the toms is incredible. Let alone the fact that he is brilliantly funny.

    I haven't watched your video yet, but am familiar with the Mr Bean invisible drum set skit and as someone who played drums since 1962, I'd say he could probably play pretty well as soon as he got used to the physical "feel" of things. I noticed that he did at least two stick twirls too. To me, what he did here is actually harder than really playing and this video is not as well timed as the original in which every stroke was dead on. Let's see if we agree.

    I remember the Not The Nine O'clock News series. In some of those episodes they all played as a band in the end and Rowan was sitting behind the drums. I don't know if it was all playback or not, but it looked real at least. I would guess that Rowan maybe was an amateur drummer in some band in his younger years or something, but I've never heard him mention it. Many years ago I bought a DVD with the best of that series, but unfortunately the band part was not included, so I have nothing to support my comment, just a vague memory. Just saying he MIGHT be an amateur drummer anyway, not that I actually know anything about it.
