- Best known for his use of physical comedy, as well as his alter ego Mr. Bean, Atkinson's performances do not heavily rely on language. In this sketch, Atkinson uses his ability to react to situations with bizarre, yet hilarious, facial expressions. This talent for entirely visual comedy is very evident in Invisible Drum Kit, which closes his show Rowan Atkinson Live! (Boston, 1992). The performance of this piece is dedicated to my brothers Nolan and Dustin, who always remind me how to laugh.

Wow people are negative. I agree that Rowan Atkinson did it better, but it was his act so I doubt anyone could match his naturalism and humour in this. All in all though, a pretty good tribute and clearly took a lot of practice, so hats off to you.

Brilliant. At 2:38 he twirls the stick in his right hand, then drops them at 3:47 . I played drums for over 40 years and he couldn't do what he does in this video if he didn't understand the techniques. He may not be a Buddy Rich but he can probably hold his own on a trap set.

As a Gen X who matured out of the Uk, I have to say it's good to see this sketch is still inspirational. AS a Gen X, most people who saw it originally, couldn't hit replay ... whilst knowing you'd seen something truly brilliant performed by a master of comedic timing at that time, the idea of being able to examine it repeatedly hadn't happened yet unless you had the equipment and happened to be recording at the time and even then, at the risk your tape got chewed or snapped [frequency of use would certainly guarantee] you were stuck waiting for the digital revolution.
Even back in the day it was obvious that only drummers or pianists were going to be able to truly credit how good Atkinson is at invisible instruments. He started at mime young, the drum lit and piano sketches are mime as good as it gets, such that you need the sound accompaniment to realise how good he really is at it.
Well said! Rowan is absolutely incredible at what he does, it's awe-inducing and inspiring all at the same time.

Maybe is not as good as the original, but trying to recreate the sounds from scratch and learning the tempo is still quite amazing, some say you need guts, i say you have love and hapiness.
Thank you for saying that - I feel the same way. Nobody will ever be the same as Rowan, but I had an absolute blast performing one of his favorites.

Thanks Chris! I actually created everything using Garageband - some of the non-drum set sounds were actually various pots and glasses around my apartment!

When I saw the original I thought it must have taken quite a lot of work to master. I think you did really well, of course is not Atkinson's level but you did the piece justice.

Even though this is NOT! Rowan himself but, someone who has studied this schetch thoroughly & has done a good job on it. ( Fair enough well done) But, personally I think you can never beat the original.

I remember being so smitten with this work, that I planned and tried to do this for a talent show, but got the technical support figured out.
Did you play along to a fixed track, or did you have someone firing off cues, or did someone else play the drum parts off-stage ?
Thank you Patrick! I played along to a fixed track that I made myself from scratch, and then I had the exact same track but with vocal cues and click track on my iPod with earphones. I clicked 'play' at the same time on both before I walked out on stage - I had to practice that part too!
