  • Steve shows off a killer Ludwig from the late 50s, early 60s. This kit is in a rare Blue Oyster Pearl finish, and with a shallower "New Yorker" style bass drum.

The best drum store in the world has one of the best sets in the world. I have a Premier from the early 60's in that same configuration plus another 12" and a 16", both pre-int sizes. The 20x12" is for me one of the best bass drum sounds that exist, and it is also very comfortable to move.
Has it already been sold? If imports to Spain weren't as expensive as they are... I wouldn't have minded having that beauty in my collection.
A pleasure to listen to Mr. Steve Maxwell as always. Thank you.

I've got a '63 pre-serial Keystone Badge New Yorker kit in Oyster Blue Pearl with a 12x22 - one of the best sounding bass drums I've played. It's in the same condition as the beauty you're playing in this video. The Oyster Blue Pearl was out in the late 50's as I own a WFL Drums SuperClassic snare in Oyster Blue Pearl with a date stamp of SEP 2 1958. All original. You can see the wrap go into the scarf joint and actually poke out a little inside the snare. I came across two other WFL Drums (13x9 and 22x14) in Oyster Blue Pearl with the exact same date stamp as my snare. I didn't purchase them as they were in pretty bad shape unfortunately. I'm wondering if my snare and the tom/bass drum were part of a test/demo kit to see how people would like the pearl wrap? The wrap is very vibrant and stunning to look at - it's amazing that they could make this stuff back in the late 50's.

    The listing states it’s a 20x14 BD not a 20x12.

I think this period from Ludwig is the best, because I like to think WFL had something to prove putting his name back on drums. The QC was milesssss better back then. Have had plenty of kits post Transition Badge, but would love to own a conditioned kit like this one day.
