I really love how Garrus is like a mirror for Shepard to look into. If you're a paragon player, he mirrors your decisions. As a renegade, he agrees with that "ruthless calculus." Great character.
Jane the lagger Aye Garrus is a Renegade but you can show him the ways of a paragon, he will resist at first in Mass Effect one but he starts to come around
lagger jane Garrus is more of an apprentice to Shepard. He questions you a lot in ME1 but he listens to your answers and tries to understand them. Likewise his time as Archangel was him trying to follow Shepard's example. When that failed, he went back to Shepard. He is Shepard's younger brother.
Actually that's a reason why the character design is quite bad in these scenarios. If they answer the same both ways it completely removes their identity. Mordin is the only character in the entire game to assess his own actions regardless of the fact that you are Shepard. Even if you convince him to not cure the genophage, he doesn't do so because you're Shepard so you would know whats best. He does so because he truly thinks that Salarian aid for the catalyst would be instrumental as well as leadership of the krogan under Wreav would be extremely detrimental. This gives Mordin actual character identity and he's not just going to go along with what you say or do just because you're the protagonist or hero. You can make decisions and some characters will either like or dislike it but they will never attempt to question you on it further. If I sabotaged the genophage and killed Mordin, I wouldn't want Garrus to react with a "you did what you had to do" attitude, when in the curing of the genophage he believes you made the right decision and is even grateful for it because he is good friends with Wrex.
In short, I don't want Garrus to be a reflection of the person I have already been playing as the entire time, you specifically need him to be someone who can provide a second opinion to you. That's what you ideally need from all of the characters. Some of them may agree with your decisions and some of them may not but they need to at least be consistent about it in both playthroughs. Otherwise, renegade is just "ends justify the means" and everyone agrees with you or paragon is "we can't sacrifice our humanity in the process" and everyone agrees with that.

@@steelbear2063 no, but Wrex can raise the new generation to actually think about the consequences of over population to make sure they don't make the same mistakes as their ancestors.

I love how Garrus is the only one Shepard tells about him sabotaging the Genophage and being forced to kill Wrex in self-defence. The reason Garrus doesn't get upset with Shepard is because, while Wrex was a friend to him, Shepard is more or less a brother. He knew Shepard wouldn't have done it if there was no other way. @@TheKypps I saved the Krogan because I wanted to give them at least a chance. But part of the problem with Krogan is a biological one. Thats why Garrus was the best character:the fact that Shepard even can admit the truth to him without any judgement makes him true best friend. What Shepard did was really bad yet Garrus stayed loyal to him.Their friendship is deep👌
You know, at first I thought people were overhyping the characters and the acting in ME3. Now I see all the really good stuff was hidden in the Renegade path. I was full Paragon.
This is why you play Paragade or Renagon. Yeah you wont get to make TIM take the easy way out but it's fun to mix it up. Not everyone is solely pure or solely focused on the job and nothing else so playing as a mix of both personality's is more fun to me.
The reason why Garrus is pretty much Shepard's bro and the secondary leader of the Normandy crew is because he understands Shepard's actions more than anyone else can. Garrus is the definition of a loyal squadmate.
SymbiSpidey i agree with you to a point. Garrus would've been pissed about betraying both Mordin and Wrex. Garrus was a realist and knew the genophage had to end. But I think he and Shepard are bro's and that might just be why Garrus would've let that slide btu I would've liked it better if they had Garrus tell him point blank that what he did was f***ed
theQuestion626 It's explained already in the scene. Garrus is in the same situation, making that call for his own people. "If you asked me a few years ago I'd say you paid too much", yet Sheperd is doing it for the entire Galaxy, not one race or the other. You can't not understand that - And Garrus has been with you for three games and seen these decisions being made - Garrus learns from you - he gets it. There is going to be sacrifice, one way or the other. He clearly accepted it without any impact on their friendship. War forces these decisions. Damn war.
0:51 "Wouldn't have anything to do with Wrex jumping you at the Citadel, would it? Heard he was pretty angry." He says the end of this line with a bit of cold sarcasm. I thought that Garrus had become at least good friends with Wrex... Here, he doesn't sound like he mourns Wrex. Or am I wrong?
I know I am late, but I will answer anyway. I don´t think that Garrus "likes" Wrex tbh. He certainly respects Wrex, both for his honor and his courage, but you can constantly hear him worrying about the krogan expansion throughout the game. He clearly sees the krogan as a threat, including Wrex, so I don´t think he was that upset about how it ended, aside from the fact that most of the krogan war assets got called off because of it.
@@jirkazalabak1514 Building off what you said, I think a lot of people sometimes forget the relations the other races had _long_ before humanity was even on the scene. The genophage, for example, was deployed in 710 CE, and humanity didn't join the galactic community until 2157 CE. So there was 1,447 _years_ of embitterment on both sides. And the Krogan, who can live for over a thousand years, can seriously hold a grudge. Garrus is smart, cool, and calculated. Even when his team on Omega was utterly destroyed, he didn't let his emotions - his anger and sorrow - get in the way. Whether this is indicative of how all Turians operate is difficult to say, but given the circumstances surrounding Wrex's death (what with the entire galaxy at stake), I think it's easy enough to understand Garrus' cooled reaction.
@@hamsterdoom360 Agreed, Garrus is not one to let feelings cloud his judgement. As far as other turians are concerned, I would guess that their long and mandatory military service makes them much more stoic and disciplined than other species, but of course, most are not as calm and calculated as Garrus is. I mean, when you look at his personality, Garrus is much more of a renegade than most people seem to realize. Whenever he is asked about a problem, he approaches it like a renegade would, at least most of the time. He even mentions that if there was any chance to not cure the krogan, he would´ve taken it.
The Ruthless calculus of war. Say whatever you want about ME3 but it captures the hopeless march of the Reapers perfectly by reminding you of the things you had to do, the decisions you had to make. Who do you support? Who do you let die? The first play through still sticks to me.
Why this is recommended to me now 8 years after I played thru the game like 4 times with 4 different characters. Never had this conversation and it just had me teary eyed.
The first time you lie to Garrus, the confrontation with Wrex and this scene here are imo good enough reasons to sabotage the cure. Playing a remorseful Paragon Shepard after doing it still makes them a monster, but the quality of writing and drama it brings I feel can't be passed up.
This is why Garrus is truly Shepard's dearest friend always has his back no matter what. His character was just perfect and the best companion and friend you can have within the Mass Effect series.
The fact that shepard silence made garrus understand what shepard did, and garrus still didn't blame shepard for it, but he blamed war and the whole situation, dude cares a lot and can't believe shepard is just evil
Garrus knew a long time ago that the war with the reapers would be brutal and that there was gonna be a lot of hard choices he accepted every call Shepard was going to make because he knows what it’s like to give orders that will get his men killed. Shepard gave an order that got Wrex and Mordin killed he can’t judge Shepard on it because he might’ve made the same call and it doesn’t matter to him that Shepard pulled the trigger on both of them because he would have done the same thing. Remember if Shepard doesn’t shoot Ashley Garrus will.
Except Garrus never stared down a barrel by one of his own men because he chose to remove a threatening criminal over something they have a personal stake in that can never be recovered
I did a pure Paragon playthrough and then a pure Renegade playthrough. Honestly hard to feel sympathy for the Krogan -- if you save them without Wrex in your campaign, sure you've secured Krogan forces for Earth, but Wreav takes the reigns and spends the rest of the game sermonizing about marshalling new Krogan from all over in a revenge animus after the Reapers are dealt with. Shephard made a fair point when Wrex confronts him in the Citadel that not all Krogan are like Wrex and they just aren't ready for a cure. They really are conquest worshipping, savage people... Securing Krogan loyalty was synchronously guaranteeing yet another future war with their now revitalized populace, Wreav basically makes a promise of it. All of the Krogan's woes are biproducts of their own incessant war-mongering. Despite their grudge against the galaxy, they honestly do it to themselves. Act like a dog, don't be surprised when people put you on a leash. Only thing about the genophage sab choice that bummed me out second time around was capping Mordin.
Apparently most players believe that just 2 krogan are enough to stop the bloodthirsty behavior krogan have demonstrated throughout their entire history. In game, sure I'll do wrex a solid. But if this was real life there is no way in hell I'd cure the genophage.
You can convince Mordin to sabotage the genophage. I think it’s a renegade dialogue option, he sees that Wreave is too chaotic and bloodthirsty, and will work on the crucible instead.
Historically, yes that was the definition. However according to the OED the currently accepted primary definition is "kill, destroy, or remove a large proportion of:" - and not simply 1 in 10.
I also like to add that it's really awesome how really deep the Shepard and Garrett race ship really goes down and you can say their best of friends.... my favorite is romance Tali zorah as a male Shepard and having you as my best friend and I always pick him in the last battle... seeing my best friend Garris holding white girl Tali telling me that she already found her home always tears me up inside

Thats why Garrus was the best character:the fact that Shepard even can admit the truth to him without any judgement makes him true best friend. What Shepard did was really bad yet Garrus stayed loyal to him.Their friendship is deep👌
The way Garrus just sighed and went "Damn war...." really struck hard
You know, at first I thought people were overhyping the characters and the acting in ME3. Now I see all the really good stuff was hidden in the Renegade path. I was full Paragon.
This is why you play Paragade or Renagon. Yeah you wont get to make TIM take the easy way out but it's fun to mix it up. Not everyone is solely pure or solely focused on the job and nothing else so playing as a mix of both personality's is more fun to me.
So many mass effect scenes make me cry, this is one of them.
Awesome, many thanks for uploading this! This scene really solidified my Shep/Garrus friendship.
An awesome scene I would never have seen otherwise. Thanks for posting.
anyone else think garrus should have been a little bit more upset about this?
probably loves Shep a little less for it, judging by Shep getting all crew through ME2 alive, if your Shep did that.
^Fair enough and a good point
The reason why Garrus is pretty much Shepard's bro and the secondary leader of the Normandy crew is because he understands Shepard's actions more than anyone else can. Garrus is the definition of a loyal squadmate.
SymbiSpidey i agree with you to a point. Garrus would've been pissed about betraying both Mordin and Wrex. Garrus was a realist and knew the genophage had to end. But I think he and Shepard are bro's and that might just be why Garrus would've let that slide btu I would've liked it better if they had Garrus tell him point blank that what he did was f***ed
theQuestion626
It's explained already in the scene. Damn war.
This was honestly the best series
"Garrus, how do you integrate x^x?" "it's that ruthless calculus again"
OH DID HE JUST SAID "DAMN WAR"
OMFG SUDDEN REALIZATION AFTER MORE THAN A YEAR
0:51 "Wouldn't have anything to do with Wrex jumping you at the Citadel, would it? Heard he was pretty angry." He says the end of this line with a bit of cold sarcasm. I thought that Garrus had become at least good friends with Wrex... Here, he doesn't sound like he mourns Wrex. Or am I wrong?
He knows Shepard was upset over the killing, so did not want to put more blame on him I assume
He says it in a none confrontational way, the way you would talk to a child..knowing they did wrong..but right at the same time.

Building off what you said, I think a lot of people sometimes forget the relations the other races had _long_ before humanity was even on the scene.
1:20 Baiiiiiiiiii
I like that Garrus is the only one that Shepard can admit to sabotaging the cure. He truly is Shepard's right-hand man.
Why this is recommended to me now 8 years after I played thru the game like 4 times with 4 different characters. Never had this conversation and it just had me teary eyed.
That silence and the "Damn war." 💔
Damn, Garrus has got to have one of the coolest voices ice ever heard. Very smooth.
Regardless of the ending, it's the dialogue like this that truly made the game shine.
Thanks for uploading this! I lack the resolve to kill two friends so I'd never get to this dialogue myself... And Garrus' awesome as usual.
This is one of the best written scenes in the trilogy, change my mind
I’ve done 1 play through now as basic paragon Shepard and maxed war assets. So much stuff I missed out on. Oh well guess I’ll play it again
"Garrus... Legion is the one who interrupted your calibrations."
ME 1 Renegade: Bad Ass
ME 2 Renegade: Bad Person
ME 3 Renegade: Are you even human?
years later and Im having a hard time not crying lol
garrus is a friend... more than friend, a brother everybody needs..
Such a great moment
Thanks mate.
Garrus: "...damn ending!"
Krogan are cool but they breed too fast. It was either the genophage or more krogan rebellions later on. I’ll take genophage
Garrus knows that if not for the reapers, Shepard wouldn't do those things
Oh thank you, that makes much more sense now.
God I can't wait for the remaster! And, the animations may look a little stiff, but I think the game aged pretty damn well
That’s why he’s the ultimate bro you didn’t even have to say it and he already knew
So this is the parallel universe I've been hearing about.
great scene .. had it too in one of my playtroughts ..
I like this reasoning, if someone gets in yout way, kill him/her, Mordin included, just fuckin' kill him; Garrus understands that
***** exactly, kill ONE to PROBABLY save MILLIONS??? Oh YES
The storytelling in ME3 is incredible.
Too bad that Garrus wasn't there to help Mordin with the calibrations.
You can convince Mordin to sabotage the genophage. I think it’s a renegade dialogue option, he sees that Wreave is too chaotic and bloodthirsty, and will work on the crucible instead.
Only if Wrex is dead would I truly pick that option.
AND NO STEPPING FORWARD!
Nobody knew that Wrex jumped me at the citadel because I blew him away and Commander Bailey covered it up for me.
I didn't get to see this because I cured the genophage, but this is a really powerful scene. Great voice acting.
I love how Garrus is still on your side, he understands your Renegade actions like it's nothing. GARRUS!! Such a fucking BRO!!!!
Garrus's loyalty to Shep is absolute.
Oh I see, now that makes sense to me. Thank pina ~~~
@SamusVSMC Agreed. I like that he's the only one you admit this to. He's the only crew member who would understand.
Garrus is easily Shepard's best friend. It's quite beautiful considering the history between Humans and Turians
Ashley: Ugh. I hate you.
Shepard: I hate you...
Ashley: Sir...butt pirate.
The voice acting in this game is godlike.
Garrus is such a bro. No matter what he is always on your side
most satisfying scene in the trilogy
Garrus is a real one. Didn’t yell, didn’t judge, just understood
Historically, yes that was the definition. However according to the OED the currently accepted primary definition is "kill, destroy, or remove a large proportion of:" - and not simply 1 in 10.
Damn if I was Garrus I'd be like: "Okay drop me off at the next landing zone, we're not friends anymore."
I also like to add that it's really awesome how really deep the Shepard and Garrett race ship really goes down and you can say their best of friends.... my favorite is romance Tali zorah as a male Shepard and having you as my best friend and I always pick him in the last battle... seeing my best friend Garris holding white girl Tali telling me that she already found her home always tears me up inside
...Mans1ayer has ruined that opening Garrus line for me.
Garrus knows saving the galaxy isn't a walk in the park. Tough decisions must be taken.
So that's when he said it
One of the best scenes in the trilogy. No music, no sound effects just two bros grieving about all the horrid shit they have had to do in war.
