Hi Tim, i finally understand how important the yellow is with seeing so much red in the fall, need to have contrast. Of these two which do you think can handle a bit more sun, Bihou or Aureum.
We've been to the Esveld tree last weekend. It's the original Aureum in Europe, indeed brought there by Von Siebold (I don't think he threw the thing though :)). Been to Dick van der Maat too and he told me the difference between Aureum and Kin Kakure is that Aureum grows more broad and Kin Kakure grows more upright. Not sure if that is true, both trees look similar to me and I've seen Aureum that grow upright too. In any case, you just cannot go wrong with Aureum. It is my one and only favorite maple.
I am adding Summer gold next week to my garden… I appreciate all your videos. I wish you sold larger maples.. I am the impatient Gardner and the one gallons just take too long for me. I do have several from your nursery though!!

Definitely some great trees and I have to admit I only knew of the green Japanese maple and red. So watching your videos has shown me a new world and I hope to live on a property with more space for these trees.#japanesemaples
Also people should not disappoint when they do not see the expected color at the location they are growing that plant. That was my biggest lesson learned
I've fallen in love with Japanese maples recently. On the other hand, my bank account hasn't. 😅 I think when the choice of bills or maples comes into question, the right decision will be made...... (hopefully). I have Mikawa yatsubusa Little princess Palmatum atropureum I think the shiraswanum would fit in perfectly to the collection next. Something with a decent yellow foliage period.
If placed in container , will it need protection from my winters here in zone 5b or should I just plant in ground for better insulation ? In zone 5b , can I plant them in more sunnier spots ?
Well it would need to be more specific to be honest. 8-10 is a huge range. Typically it’s on east coast zones 5-9 work for maples. Hot Blonde and Summer Gold are among the most heat tolerant
I put my Japanese maple in a container and it kept dropping leaves. I have now put it in the ground and it has lost all its leaves now but is still green when I scratch the bark. Do you think it will come back in the Spring? It's Ghost. I am heartbroken!
Many would disagree there is a lot of beauty in the green. Osakazuki and Hogyoku are some of our most popular trees. There is a lot more to Japanese maples than leaf color.

Yes maples in containers need protection in zone 5 for sure. They are ok on the ground but still protect from extreme changes
