The reign of House Targaryen begins with this prequel to popular HBO series "Game of Thrones." Based on George R.R. Martin's "Fire & Blood," "House of the Dragon" is set nearly 200 years before the events of "Game of Thrones," telling the story of the Targaryen civil war with King Viserys I Targaryen's children battling for control of the Iron Throne.

An animated series would fit perfectly for RR Martin's story, animations would let him make whatever he wants his characters to look like
canonically accurate? you do realize this is fiction and at the end of the day, what the author wants each character to look like is what he wrote.
@@jdcharlie You do realise he/shes actually, completely right. F&B isn't like the main series of books, because by the definition of canon, its not "canon". A lot of what is in the books is untrue, because unlike the main series, its not a novel, and is more of a history book built from incredibly unreliable, 3rd party accounts, many of which the narrator himself doesn't believe.
So, no, it's not "canonically accurate", but this isn't a bad thing at all. It gives opportunity for GRMM to reimagine characters, with Paddy's Viserys being a prime example.

Why did the show choose to make all these characters brown people? I don’t know. It’s not like there aren’t plenty of locations in asoiaf that have those colorations. Summer Isles, Ghis, Myr, or even further east.
It really makes the silver hair and purple eyes feel less special when you realize people from all over the former Valyrian territories have it, not just Targaryens. I think the decision to make it rarer in the show than in the books was a good one.

The Hightowers actually seem to have Targaryen like traits in the books. Jahaerys often mistook Alicent for one of his own family members in his old age, and Jorah told Danaerys that his former wife Lynesse Hightower looked a bit look Dany herself.
I just finished reading that chapter! Jorah is getting a bit too creepy..
After the Dance, Rhaena (Daemon and Laena's daugher) marries a Hightower and has like 6 daughters with him. It's possible one of these girls married back into their lordly cousins who ruled over Oldtown, and passed down Valyrian features. Or they married into other Reach houses, which then married into the Hightowers. All the way leading to Lynesse. Margaery's mother, Alerie Hightower (Lynesse's older sister) is also described with silver hair.

The casting directors did their thang most of the castings are spot on
Alicent and Daemon are so perfectly cast, but I don’t know if Rhaenyra’s drawing is necessarily accurate. The books described her as not losing the baby weight, and being thick of waist, which doesn’t necessarily make her face fuller, as she was said to be incredibly beautiful throughout her childhood, and Daemon declared her the most beautiful woman in the seven kingdoms.
Also, being "plump" (or thicc lol) was seen as sexy because it proved a woman's fertility and ability to carry a healthy pregnancy.
Daemon might be biased because he has always clearly been attracted to her (way before she bore children) both physically and mentally. When you genuinely love someone, I think you will be happy to overlook more trivial things like babyweight
@@quakethedoombringer I mean you could argue that, or you could argue that her beauty was so great, that he couldn’t help but fall in love with his niece.
I just can’t find any description of her that implies her face was any less beautiful post kids. She’s just chubby in the waist.
So she can't be beautiful if her face is "chubby"?
Rhaenyra became so obese and gluttonous that Daemon cheated on her twice, so the AI did a good job making her look fat and homely
Book version Daemon would make a good Sauron.
Alicent isn’t actually described all that much in the book. We never get her hair colour. However, it’s suggested that she had blond or even silver hair. Mainly, as she was reading to a bedbound, dying King Jaehaerys he would often mistake her for his last remaining daughter, Saera, finally returned to him from across the sea.
All four of her children had the silver hair/purple eyes combo. Considering the Targaryens don’t have a very strong dominant gene it could suggest that Alicent had similar colouring.
Yup lol this video is bull. Just some AI generated crap.
The Targaryens have strong gene looks in the books, their purple eyes are very strong features which never gets lost and considering the Targaryens have married a vast majority of the houses in the realm by the main story line, and they still have all their traits, I dunno why you'd assume that... plus, blond hair is more dominant than most think, its only over taken by black and brown and it isn't to say Silver is necessarily considered like "blond" in westeros, its very distinctive
But the drawings in Fire and Blood book have Alicent with dark hair, not silver/blonde.
When a Targaryen bred with a Valaryon, another Targaryen, or a Lyseni they produced silver haired, purple eyed children (with a few exceptions, eg. Alysanne, Shiera). However there are multiple examples of when outside Blood is introduced, the Valyrian blood isn’t very strong at all. Rhaenyra’s first three sons all look “Strong”. Daeron II’s children looked Dornish. Aegor Rivers has the Bracken look. Multiple of Aegon IV’s children looked more Blackwood than Targaryen. The most obvious example is Jon, he has the Stark colouring, Rhaegar’s other children took more after Elia than himself.
Except marriages with Baratheon, Targaryens always get more children looking like them than otherwise.
Edit: And Rhaenyra's case too with Harwin Strong genes.
I still believe the theory that Alicent is at least a blue eyed blonde, that's why all her children have full Targaryen features (just like what happened when a Dayne lady married in the Targaryen house, which is different from when dark haired ladies were; Rhaenys is actually black haired with purple eyes in the book bcs of her Baratheon mother), why Jahaerys I and, now in the show, Viserys I mistook them for their daughter/wife later in life. Even if you have blurred vision, you can spot the blonde hair. And it's not as if there aren't other houses or populations around Planetos with Valyrian looks. House Dayne are from Dorne, but have platinum hair and purple eyes. Lys has so many descendants of Valyria. There's Targaryen bastards running around.
Plus "like in the book" is a lie. In the book she is older when she married Viserys I. Alicent was a teen (at the very least 15) during the last few years on Jahaerys I's rule and married Viserys I in her mid to late 20's and should be ~40 by that info. The show changed her age for creative liberties and to create a friend bond between Rhaenyra and her so the drama is juicier, when they could've kept the age gap between R and A and shown she was actually fine with Alicent as her stepmom and their relationship was good until the fire nation attacked and the tensions began to rise.
I wonder if we’ll see Rhaenyra’s weight gain be gradual throughout the seasons as she goes through more and more stress.
Most likely not.
Rhaenyra's weight gain was due to child birth, which was funny in a way because Alicent remained slender.
@@Billythetoaster2004 I’m talking about the show universe not the book universe. They could make a small change like that.

The Strong boys are spot on as well. They really look as depicted. Aegon II is not meant to be as handsome as in the show. In the books he grows quite fat because he drank and ate too much and also became partially paralysed after being injured by Rhaenys. As for the Velaryons... Well, they are not meant to have the skin colour depicted in the show...
@@hammer3721 yeah they changed the skin colour for the sake of diversity... It was a little annoying.
@@paawan3764 it's kinda funny to think that the targaryens who are so obsessed with keeping their lineage pure would choose a family that looks so drastically different to be the only family they regularly mix with.

An animated series of GOT wouldn’t sell as much as a live action or get that much attention. That’s why anything that is live action is so hard to make. They need the face and name of an actor you know doing marketing for the Show.
Casting is literally the hardest part. Not only do you need to get an actor that can play the part, look the part and also bring the money. Then you need to assemble all the contracts and schedule to see make up 3 months in advance. If the main lead actors are short almost every actor they appear with most of the time will have to be their height, so you gotta cast everyone around them to complement their height. And that is before you have an agreement with his agent & publicists.

Cole's casting is funny to me because the Coles being from the "Dornish Marches" is deliberately non-indicative- the Marches are a Stormlander barrier sub-nation. I do suppose that he could easily have Dornish ancestry, but still, the writers heard the word "Dornish" and made him that.
Northern "stone" dornishmen (Dayne, Ironwood, Manwoody, Blackmont, Wyl) are not very different from Westeros people. It's "sand" and "salt" dornishmen that are different
He's still a Marcher in the show, and he's mentioned that he was sworn to the lord of House Dondarrion. They just have him with some Dornish ancestry, which I actually think was kind of a good choice. It's not too implausible given how real life border regions often have been, and the fact that he looks Dornish probably was a factor in why Rhaenyra thought he'd make a good side piece, due to Dornish reputation and sexual mores (with her not seeming to fully grasp that Ser Criston is culturally an Andal through and through, despite his look)
