Thankfully she overlooked the production, kept it as close to the novels as possible and they ended up being very decent films. God knows what would have happened had she lost her grip on the series.

The thing about James and Lily people forget is that they were in their early 20s when they died. They were young parents. Snape is technically in his mid thirties, Alan Rickman portrayed him perfectly, the only discrepancy is his age, being twice the age of his character. I think it's more emotionally impactful when you met your dead parents and they're only a few years older than you, seeing your father at eye level, disheartening. The actors were cast long before that was known, so no blame there, but I'm glad at least here it shows them to be at the appropriate age.
I just realised that if Lily was 21 when she died (which is at the beginning of Philosopher's Stone) Petunia was 23! And she's described as a much older woman. Not just physically but from her actions too

Often verbally harsh but always physically gentle. Students' safety is his no. 1 priority. Movie Snape - 55 years old at the beginning of the series, not pale, not skinny, let alone scrawny. Very conspicuous every time he appears on the screen. Stomps confidently around the corridors. Slams doors and stuff constantly for no reason. Speaks loudly. Also, who the hell came up with that bizarre s-u-p-e-r-s-l-o-w way of speaking? Book Snape never speaks like that. Movie Snape is physically violent towards his students. Gosh how I hate those scenes where he smacks the boys with a book or aggressively shoves their heads. That's something book Snape would never do. Most movies, shows, and video games nowadays are trying to cater to “modern audiences” when they adapt a source material or make something new. Which is why they get so much backlash and usually do bad because 90 percent of the viewers are actual fans who feel disrespected with what they got. Just look at the rings of power. I think the casting was very accurate, even in the character where they're most different from their book representation , there are some key features that make them very accurate, and to be fair the casting is overall very accurate, I think uncle dursley was the most accurate, and mcgonall although much older seems identical to her book counterparts.

Chris is a great director though, make no mistake.

Man, I can't lie...I was never as big on Gary Oldman as Sirius as everyone else. The AI generated image definitely fits what I had in my head more, although a bit less rugged than I imagine. Harry Potter is weird series for me in that the casting as far as physical appearance feels oddly perfect yet wrong simultaneously. Some people felt too beautiful at times, others too old, some were too young, etc. Remus especially is one that I was not a fan of, I don't care what anyone says. RIP to Alan Rickman as well, love him, but he was not the Snape I had read about growing up. He was far too dignified and dare I say even regal. Snape, to me, was supposed to be more haunted, not an overly remarkable or memorable man, and sneering and scowling down his nose at you. Unpopular opinion: Emma was a better choice for Hermione upon revisiting the books than I used to think. Maybe it's because I'm older now but I think she grew into Hermione Granger really well, although I do think it didn't really hit for me until GOF.

Gary not being one of them. I suspect Gary was chosen, if indeed even my Rowling at all, simply for being British because in the books he is around 33 and "handsome". Which is why they get so much backlash and usually do bad because 90 percent of the viewers are actual fans who feel disrespected with what they got. Just look at the rings of power. There are limitations to how close you can get to a book character with real life peope, that also have to be somewhat good actors and are ready to spend their life on a movie. Imagine if they had cast an American actor as Snape, we would have missed Alan Rickman's incredible talent, his deep voice and his beautiful British accent. As a Spanish I can say that the British accent is the most beautiful of all.
I wish they had, just so we'd have 80% fewer simps for Snape. I think the casting was very accurate, even in the character where they're most different from their book representation , there are some key features that make them very accurate, and to be fair the casting is overall very accurate, I think uncle dursley was the most accurate, and mcgonall although much older seems identical to her book counterparts.

@Anish Maitra most the casting was done by JK herself. Chris Colombus tried to relocate the movies to America with American actors and JK outright refused. He then tried sneakily to give the role of Harry to an American actor but JK said no and that he had to be British, to keep the spirit of the books. If Colombus had his way the movies would be completely different.

Some of these work for me, some don't. But I have to say, the Sirius Black, Lucius & Narcissa Malfoy and Peter Pettigrew ones are outstanding, almost exactly how I pictured them when reading the books all those years ago.

Man, I can't lie...I was never as big on Gary Oldman as Sirius as everyone else. The AI generated image definitely fits what I had in my head more, although a bit less rugged than I imagine. Harry Potter is weird series for me in that the casting as far as physical appearance feels oddly perfect yet wrong simultaneously. Some people felt too beautiful at times, others too old, some were too young, etc. Remus especially is one that I was not a fan of, I don't care what anyone says. RIP to Alan Rickman as well, love him, but he was not the Snape I had read about growing up. He was far too dignified and dare I say even regal. Snape, to me, was supposed to be more haunted, not an overly remarkable or memorable man, and sneering and scowling down his nose at you.
Unpopular opinion: Emma was a better choice for Hermione upon revisiting the books than I used to think. Maybe it's because I'm older now but I think she grew into Hermione Granger really well, although I do think it didn't really hit for me until GOF.
Well people envision the characters differently. What you envisions may not be what others did and not what J.K. Rowling wanted to put across and that’s okay. She handpick most cast so I think she got exactly what she wanted for her characters and that’s good enough for me. 🤷🏻♀️
i imagined Harry to have a much thinner face, a very lanky body, tan skin, shaggy hair and bright green eyes. and i imagined ginny like the image shown for her. i do think ron and hermione looked pretty accurate compared to the image in my head tho

The books descriptions of many characters are too cartoony and exaggerated, makes sense because they’re kids books and they help make envisioning the characters easier. Of course this wouldn’t translate 100% in live action

Gary not being one of them. Apparently she only picked a few of the main characters so I'm assuming Harry and his minions and they were chosen for either looking like their counterparts or just because they were British. I suspect Gary was chosen, if indeed even my Rowling at all, simply for being British because in the books he is around 33 and "handsome". I agree people will have their own visions on their head but at the same time some things aren't really left to the imagination like the Weasley twins being shorter and stocky builds whereas Ron was the tall gangley one, Dudley being blonde, Dumbledore being a redhead in his younger days ect. @Salty yeah agreed, I hope this never happens. If Netflix or Amazon got their grubby, greedy, non-creative hands on HP then all hope would be lost. Thankfully JK still owns the rights and I don't think she'd ever let that happen. She has creative input in basically everything Harry Potter that is released and can refuse stuff if she wants to. She was very clever not to completely give up the rights to the franchise.

The Cho generated by the AI actually looks like a Chinese girl, while the actress they got to play the part was obviously going to be somebody born in England. She looks way more European as a result.
I actually preferred the movie versions of Lucius and Narcissa, although I do think the AI version of Draco is better.
