I know I have been in sparring matches that began to become filled with ego. I try to stop and regroup if that happens. I have also had to stop sparring matches that became aggressive. I have tried to use those times to teach others on the downfalls of ego. Good video guys!
good question live practiced yang tai chi for about 6 years and in has taught me great deal about being centered and shifting weight for throws, Ive never had the pleasure of studying bagua with anyone just books but it is the most intriguing art to me because of its flexibility and foot work and it is a thing of pure beauty , but they work so darn good together id hate to have to choose which works better so i don't love what you do keep the videos coming
I practice Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and it's really cool to see Bagua's grappling applications and training. From what I've seen, Bagua seems like a pretty well rounded martial art with strikes, grappling and some nasty moves in between which would put someone out of commission pretty badly...
Although it suffers from the same thing as many other martial arts regarding the lack of intense contact sparring, Bagua has a very complete and quite useful set. And several quite dangerous attacks. At my school, for example, I have been taught attacks to the eyes and throat that I hope I never receive. XD
I live in Stockton California about 80 miles east of San Francisco. There are a lot of families style martial arts programs here. I'm a law-enforcement officer and I'm interested in tsing I, bagua and tai chi. My choices are limited. can you enlighten me about any close quarters martial arts that would be effective in a4 feet area.
Yeah, the swimming is basically just a flow drill, like they said. To practice feel, timing, weight shifting, to learn where the opportunities are. This kind of thing crops up in lots of martial arts, even wrestling.
I know I am up late commenting on this, but whatever. I have been in thousands of sparring matches in my life (of course not that I can remember them all), but I do not remember a time that anger was a driving energy during a match. Thinking about now back to what my mind is like during sparring, it does not usually feel emotion during a match. More so a focused energy (usually on the eyes of my partner). I also like to keep both myself and partner grounded during a match, keeping our energy levels in a range of our control (the energy of anger very often being out of our control). To do this what I do during the match is release a great amount of energy at once to almost freeze my partner in place, and to "restart" the match mid-match by becoming refocused and reaware of our surroundings. I often find students let their minds wander while sparring and become unfocused. This technique of a quick powerful energy release realigns both sparrers and brings more opportunity and room for growth. The way I produce the jolt of energy is through the Kiai (my spirit yell). It is quite loud now, it has almost always been loud, quick , and energy infusing through my training since childhood. So even though emotions may arise during a sparring match, a quick Kiai and pull back to the focused present moment can usually admonish negative growth hindering emotions. Dream well :)
There's a reflex point on the tibial band, that he bumps with his hip, that is the key to this throw. Bumped, it makes the leg buckle just a bit, and he gies right over. It's the same point we tap with the hype in Catch-As-Catch-Can or Catch Wrestling. You can also blast him in the chin with a palm heel uppercut, but he probably will never practice with you again if you do...
Combat Ba Gua Zhang - Throws! Real Pakua Chang Throws. Known as Ba Gua, Bagua, Baguazhang, Ba Gua Zhang, Pa Kua, Pakua, Pa Kua Chang, and Pakuachang this internal fighting art of Chinese Kung Fu is beautiful to watch, fun and energizing to practice, and devastating to fight with! This video showcases Ba Gua "Swimming" and Combat Bagua using a throw or hip toss to perform "Dragon Entwines the Body"! Thanks to Master Matthew Lee for leading this lesson!
What you said about anger taking over the match reminded me of a spar I was in once. it was someone I partially knew but not well enough. He forced in a head punch, and I said, that won't hit me again. With my friends, this is normal, that's just how we interact, but he took it badly and our master had to break up the much more angry spar that it became
Thank you, Master Mace, thank you Master Lee. I found your channel while poking around and I have been looking for a way to practice my meditation without being loud. I found your 8 Brocades of Qi Gong and have began making it my morning ritual as well as night time. Thank you very much for being open with your information, I have always said "when it comes to physically improving yourself, mind and body, there should not be a price tag." Basic meditation and martial structure are ways to help each other manage ourselves, its when we want to go beyond that point that I believe a monetary tribute be made to the one(s) who help you reach your next level so that both can flourish. Thank you again, and I am waiting for more videos. -side note: Searching for Kunai techniques led me to your Chain and Dart lessons, very artful and awesome, again thank you.
I know that I'm a couple years late, but I had found this fighting style and had gotten quite into it. Baguazhang (from what I now know) has different types of builds for the users of it. I wanted to know what part of Baguazhang would a person who relys on their speed would be built for.
Yestarday I saw this film called "The Great Master" based on Master Ip Man's life, where I said that Ba Gua uses movements that can make real damage to your opponent (like a Jian). I like both styles
To address the question posed--I have studied both--but had a more thorough grounding in Tai Chi Chuan. The grandmaster of my style, told us about a classic duel between a great Tai Chi master, and a great Pa Kwua master. It ended in a tie--as I recall. They decided to share their students (in essence, combine schools). It did not work out, however--due to prideful conflicts and the competitiveness of the students. At least, that's my recollection of the story. So, bottom line--neither is superior to the other. It comes down, ultimately--to the man--not the art or style.
if you don't know the answer to that question you shouldn't be teaching either of them for combat, especially if you have zero Actual fighting experience
ShaolinCenter Yo! if you haven't started watching avatar: the last airbender + avatar: The legend of korra I suggest you should! Even though it's a cartoon it portrays different martial arts beautifully and the story and chracters are awesome too! :D
YES ...I WAS PUT UP AGAINST THE HEAD INSTRUCTORS STUDENT IN A LIGHT CONTACT SPARRING MATCH.I OUTWEIGHED HIM BY 30 LBS OR SO .AFTER THE REF CALLED A TIME OUT,HE STEPPED IN AND PUNCHED MY JAW. I WAS SURPRISED AND SHOCKED ...I MADE A BAD DECISION AND AFTER THE REF CALLED THE NEXT ROUND- I APPLIED A PATENTED SPINNING BACKFIST I HAD PRACTISED RELENTLESSLY .I BROKE HIS NOSE AND ADMITTING THIS TO YOU,I AM ASHAMED,BECAUSE THAT IS NOT THE SPIRIT OF MARTIAL ARTS....HE DROPPED OUT SOON AFTER ....
There used to be a guy in my muy thai class and whenever i would spar him and land a solid strike he would get angry and rush me lol. Overtime he got better at controlling his anger
If you like the blackberries in Golden Gate Park you should come visit Seattle, we have them growing wild everywhere here. Seriously...they're everywhere.
I like to spar against all types of martial artists in a relaxed, controlled, friendly manner. However, I've had some aggressive Wing Chun practitioners going all out, with dirty and injurious tricks to attempt to win.
Once in my first tea kwon do class I had a trash-talking classmate that never paid me on a $20 bet he lost. The week before I had paid when losing a bet to him. Funny it took until now to realize that I had fault in not holding back once we were set to spare against each other.

When I was at a national tournament doing point sparring a few years ago, my opponent scored 3 points on me from a spin kick to the head and gave me a nosebleed from a forearm strike. I had gotten infuriated afterwards and a simple backfist-reverse punch wasn't enough, so on the next point, I ran across the ring and landed a superman-punch. That was when ego and anger took control over me lol
Interesting video. I have to say, however, that it would have been more professional, if your partner had not been wearing a hat. Was it really that cold, in San Francisco, in August?! I doubt that you work out in the dojo, with hats on. Just saying.
The Bagua Throw Starts at 04:50!!! Check it out and "Like" this comment so it helps others!
Grappling and throws are always so impressive to both execute and to watch.
I agree! Very satisfying to throw!
So happy to see you both collaborating once again! Best wishes to you both, great video!
Thanks Sakan! We need to have you on our channel!

Great video! But i was wondering, is it ideal for self defense on the street? Is it possible to use bagua without the swimming beforehand? Thanks ;)
Yes! The swimming is a practice technique that is good for a warm up or cool down during practice!
Yeah, the swimming is basically just a flow drill, like they said. To practice feel, timing, weight shifting, to learn where the opportunities are. This kind of thing crops up in lots of martial arts, even wrestling.

I've never had a real fight in my life. I consider myself as a lucky guy!
Don't know if that is a blessing or a curse.
Every video I have seen from this channel has been an inspiration. Thank you.

They were "Hen Hao Chi"!
Yeah, Jake, get thrown by Pam!

Very nice simple and effective self defense form.
***QUESTION:
What is better for fighting / combat Tai Chi or Bagua? Let me know below!
Kinda like asking which dressing to put on the salad. What kind of salad is it would be my question? Same here, what kind of fighter is your opponent.
Yestarday I saw this film called "The Great Master" based on Master Ip Man's life, where I said that Ba Gua uses movements that can make real damage to your opponent (like a Jian). I like both styles
depends on the situation

Bagua has an alarming amount of shared throws and techniques with Lignitzers and other Historical European fighting manuals’ grappling techniques.
Alarming? Convergent evolution occurs in both biology and memetics.
you teach Yang Tai Chi? Sun Tai Chi has Xing Yi and Baqua.
Hello again Jake!

You should stop using the term "real" in relation to martial arts. I'm pretty sure it doesn't mean what you think it means.
