You come across as a fine young man Carson and a passionate boater. As a fellow Boston Whaler lover, I agree with your analysis. I just bought a used 2018 Montauk 170 (60th anniversary model). I can't wait to unwrap her this spring. I currently have a Montauk 150 that I will be selling in another month and I'm hoping the 170 will provide a big upgrade in fishing and seakeeping ability. If, as I suspect - it "punches above its weight" as much as the 150 does - I'm gonna be one happy guy. Built in 25-gal gas tank provides waaay more range. Looks like you're in Marblehead - the most nautical city in the US! Keep up the good work.
Hi Tim! Thank you so much for your comment. Your words were very kind I appreciate them very much. I’m sure you’ll have a great time this season with your 2018 170 Montauk. That’s one of my favorite boats that you can buy today, Whaler did an amazing job engineering that vessel. You’re going to have a great season! My first newer Whaler was a 150 Montauk and I absolutely enjoyed it. The 170 is a great upgrade. Keep me updated as your season progresses! :) and yes marblehead is a great place for Whalers!! Cheers!
Awesome Video dude . . . need to tweak the audio a bit, a wee low and not consistent volume. . . awesome vid. . . I've got the 170 SS and she's taken me thru some rough patches. . .. safe and sound. . . lover her.
I'm about 2 years from buying a boat long story but currently stuck on a dialysis machine 11 hours a day waiting for a kidney transplant , getting a boat as soon as I'm out of hospital I've looked at alot of boats and I keep coming back to the whalers great video great info 👍
Thank you so much! I appreciate your support and I wish you good health in the coming two years. Hope you’ll be able to get on the water soon. Best regards!
Got the SS and find it a great boat. We just use it for playing around and skiing with the Grandkids. Does a good job of pulling my 20yo grandson around on a salon, though he prefers our families Tige 😀. All that room in the back is nice to have. Two fixable issues. One is that there should have been a bilge pump. I am used to Whalers being self-bailing and never thought about this when I was buying the boat. Another concerns the problems with mounting a trolling motor as I am not handy with tools and this requires some custom cutting and attaching.
This video is excellent! I’m considering a 170 Montauk. Given the rails on the front and sides (love the rails), how do you get into it if pushing off from a beach? I grew up with other boats that didn’t have the rails. Sorry if I’m overthinking it but would welcome your perspective as you clearly know Whalers. Thank you.
FYI Carson, the 170SS is the exact same hull as the 170 Dauntless. Whaler actually borrowed the Dauntless hull during the short run of the 170SS. Now they don't make either one.
I’ll stick to the montauk. I love that hull design. I own a 1966 13 whaler and it’s just a smaller version of the montauk. I want an older montauk to restore just like my little 13. I posted a video on my channel about the process of painting with awlcraft 2000
Thanks so much, Klaus! That’s so nice of you to say. It was a good video and I’m happy you enjoyed it. Definitely consider subscribing for more Whaler content. Thanks so much!
The difference in the two can definitely be seen in the drafting depths. In the new 160 you can get away with 6 inch depths which make it a really good flats boat. You can get away with drafting a ft. in the Montauk but it’s clearly better geared to handle open coastal water. For somebody on the gulf coast the SS is one of the best all around bay boats where the Montauk is one of the best designed all around boats.
That super sport was a 2011 model. And they range in price vastly. 2010-2017 go for $22k-$30k depending on condition, accessories etc. and thanks! Definitely consider subscribing for more Whaler content.
Yes, check out my other videos! I’ve had the 170 Montauks on the water many times! As for the 170 SS, I definitely still need to do another video of how they perform. Definitely consider subscribing for more Whaler content. Thanks!
@@plmainville haha i don’t know about the lay out sucking…. 😂 I love Whalers, if that isn’t obvious by the fact that I literally only show Whalers here haha. Key West’s are great and all but I’m just not a fan of the quality in the lower end models. It’s great that they use Yamaha, as well as don’t use wood, but they really just don’t do it for me. I think Scout would be a more comparable, better made alternative. Cheers

Both cool boats but I would choose the Montauk. Keep the videos coming!
Thanks so much! I no doubt will continue to post some awesome Whaler content this summer. The Montauk is pretty awesome.
I'll stick with the Montauk!

That’s awesome! Thanks so much for your comment. Yeah the Audio is no fun when there’s 20mph gusts off the water. But fair points lol

2000 Dauntless 16 is my favorite. Fast and furious? Fish kinda like it too.

That is factual! Thanks for sharing :)
Great video, I would probably choose the super sport because I believe the Montauk is more built for fishing
Thanks so much! Definitely consider subscribing for more Whaler content and yes that’s a great point
@@WhalerNation mind me asking where you found the 170 SS? Been looking for three months now. Thank you

Oh cool! I’ll check it out. Thanks!
Good comparison. I didnt realize the Super Sport has more aft space. I'd like to see Whaler make a 18', deep v, super sport cuddy.
Really nice breakdown between both boats...you know your Whalers. Thanks for the info!
Thanks so much, Klaus! That’s so nice of you to say. It was a good video and I’m happy you enjoyed it. Definitely consider subscribing for more Whaler content. Thanks so much!
Thank you for your fact exposition
I plan on getting a 150 montauk very soon
That’s awesome! They’re amazing boats and I owned one when I was younger!

I have the 130SS, now I want the 160!
I do too. Time for me to get shopping and review one on the channel!
Fantastic comparison!
Thanks so much!! I really appreciate it
Hate or love it at the end sealed the deal for me gang
Good content Thanks
Thanks so much! No more terrible music this time ;)
Need microphone. PLease do a Review of the REVENGE and OUTRAGE
Nice review. 👍
Thank you
My pleasure! Consider subscribing for more Whaler content to come this summer!
What year is the super sport and how much do they cost now a days Thanks... Nice video too...

Great content
Thanks so much!! Much more content to come soon!
YES
haha thanks so much
I'd love to know the top speed of each
The 170 montauks do about 33 to 35 mph. The 170 Super Sport, however, does 35 to 40 miles an hour depending on conditions.
Nice vid man ❤
Where did you get the gas tank for 17 sport?
Can you take this offshore like to Galveston
Great video
Thank you!
Awesome videos buddy, but your very hard to hear,,I'd invest in a clip on microphone
Haha you’re not wrong. Probably a good idea going forward! Definitely consider subscribing, we’ve got lots more Whaler content to come
The 17 Montauk is higher in back and the 17 ss is lower the 17 Montauk would make a better 17 ss on hull design for rough sea use
Any on the water video of these two boats?
Yes, check out my other videos! I’ve had the 170 Montauks on the water many times! As for the 170 SS, I definitely still need to do another video of how they perform. Definitely consider subscribing for more Whaler content. Thanks!
How much are the super sports?
They range in price. It depends on the model year. What year are you interested in? Thanks!
Looking to buy a Boston Whaler Super Sport 170
comment below if you can find one.
I’ll certainly keep an eye out! I am too ;) love these boats!
Montauk looks better
Montauk for the win!
Dude next time brings them on to the water
.
..
Next time!
Both are overpriced and out of date. The Key West 189 is cheaper than both of those.
Haha maybe… but I’d still buy a 190 Montauk over the key west any day of the week. #Whalergang
@@WhalerNation 190 montauk is double the price. Whalers are way overpriced. Their layout sucks and they still use wood.
