went silent after firing up a Tom from 250 yards away on Saturday, 40 minutes of complete silence I let out a real soft, muted yelp and he gobbled not 25 yards in front of me behind some brush. 5 minutes had my vary first Turkey
Last Saturday, I did a very soft yelp and he answered way off. He never responded again.

My buddy (Jon) and I had a similar experience when we shot our first turkeys in the Spring of 2018. We watched a lot of videos and did our research before hitting the woods and we still ALMOST messed it up. Called in some toms and hens from over a kilometer down close to 60yds. The forest was so loud will gobbles and yelps, it felt like they were right on top of us, but we couldn't see them. We kept yelping and clucking every time he'd gobble to try and close the distance, but then they started to leave. We decided to get up and put eyes on these birds, but every time we clucked just to get an idea on their location, they always seemed be like 40 yds from us. We were basically chasing these birds. We were discouraged and crawled back to our blinds like whipped dogs. As soon as we got back, those toms started gobbling. Man were they ever fired up, because they were closing the distance fast. Jon kept suggesting to respond with a call to let them know where we were. I said "Let's just shut up... he's bee lining for us." Sure enough, Jon spots two great big toms coming in to the field about 40yds out (i still can't see them). They both spot one of our decoys and starting running like little Veloci Raptors. They ran right pass Jon within 5 yds, stopped and circled our decoy at 10yds. I lost the coin toss, so Jon didn't hesitate to blast the beak off his first turkey. The second flew off, but then button hooked into our hen decoy (30yds). I lined him up, hoping he would come back to investigate his friend. Jon shouted a whisper at me "SHOOT HIM or LOSE HIM." I put the bead on the base his neck and folder that bird like a seven deuce draw. We popped out of our blind like as if Michael Jordan just hit the Championship title buzzer beater. Jon have been hunting big game animals, from Moose, Black Bear and White Tail, and we never been so happy in all the hunts we ever did. Love your videos!! Keep up the good work!!

He is exactly right , I learned this a few years ago. Too many people think when he gobbles that he is looking and so they answer back. He is calling you and he isn't going anywhere. Takes a lot of patience to just sit and let him gobble without calling to him ; but I can assure you it works more times than when it doesn't.
This is one of my biggest issues. I really need to learn more patience in the field.

I've found that when a tom is held up, yes be quiet but also to aggravate him with a half ass gobble to sound like a jake to piss him off then he comes looking for the jake to fight him.🤗

I literally followed this example and it worked. Called only four times and the bird came from 200 yards away. Jumped the creek and started strutting right in front of me at 40 yards. Thanks again Jason.

This is a lesson I learned through years of experience in messing up on gobblers. I think about it any time I watch a video of people calling to the birds non-stop. When the bird has already committed to coming in, just stay quiet and wait. He'll come all the way in eventually.
Great advice ! I need to practice the silent treatment much more, I have a habit of wanting to call too much ,it’s like an addiction lol ..and all it does it make them gobblers hang up.

Absolutely right! Except this morning when I went silent a little too long and a hen pulled him off in the wrong direction.
That's a great tip...It's been a problem in the past for me. over calling a bird when I know he would come with out all that calling. I just loved to hear the gobble is the problem...

It works. Helped me take the oldest bird that I have taken. Most likely 4yr old with 1 1/2 in spurs. He wouldn't budge until I went silent on him.

It happened to me 2 seasons ago. That bird didn’t say a word earlier that morning, but I stay patient till noon. Around 10:00, he started gobbling within 40-50 yard deep in the woods which I couldn’t see. I called him, he replied aggressively. 10-15 min I called and he answered, going back and forth but not showing himself. I quit calling for 10 minutes thinking what to do !, all the sudden I saw a fan 8 yards from me. Then he started walking toward the decoy silently so I took a shot then.
I watched this video on Friday and my son killed a bird Saturday because I used this method. I was remembering this video the whole time and it was hard not call, but he came in running to our tom decoy and beat it up. Then my son popped it with a 410 and TSS loads. So proud. And thanks guys for the sage advice.
Turkey season over?? Goodness, Pennsylvania just opened this past Saturday. I guess we do have one of the later opening days throughout the country but I didn’t realize most seasons were closing already.

Ontario Canada turkey season in full swing I'm trying to call less this year silence is the key
Last year I implemented this tactic and it paid off. Heard yelping (yes, not gobbling) about a hundred yards off and replied a few times, back and forth, not sure if it was a tom or hen tbh. Then I put the call down and not five minutes later 6 or 7 toms come strolling my way, curious as to where the hen had gone. Ended up smacking one of them at 25 yds! Crazy hunt, but sometimes you get lucky lol
Put the smack down on an old LBL bird this past Tuesday morning! This bird worked my tail off for several days, I got out to LBL late and made an educated guess as to where to go in due to the sun up in full beam. 30 minutes later, he was at about 200 yards, hammering, I set up decoys in an area I knew he comes through on occasion. Made my set up in a creek bed and built a little blind for my exposed left side, and gave him a soft yelp and purr. ( soft enough that I wondered if he would actually hear it) He cut me off in the purr, and I went quiet. After 15 to 20 minutes later, I gave him another soft yelp, he answered at about 80 yards with a rise in between us, another few minutes (I don’t really know how long it was cause I was getting pretty pumped up) he emerged at 60 yards along the edge of the same creek bed I was in and then took 40 minutes to cover the last 60 yards giving me a full strut show! He came in and curled in between me and the decoys, made a quick move and flogged my little struter decoy and then came again in front of the decoys when he got rolled in a position between the decoys at 14 steps away! I had re-watched this very video the night before and had to remind myself during that 40 minutes of strut show to just stay quiet!! Two years ago, I would have probably run him off calling....To say I am wound UP is putting it lightly!!

This ole trick works like a charm. I killed my second bird this morning with it. That tom gobbled at me when I let out some yelps, and I shut up. 10 minutes of him gobbling and me not saying a thing, he flew across the creek to me, and walked right towards me. Game over for him.
Jason, what you have said here is exactly how I managed to kill the only two turkeys I heard during this years season. I made a total of three yelps, the gobbler answering each one, over a period of one hour. He finally strutted into my decoy, six hens in tow. It is even the tactic I took in helping a 12 year old kid kill his first turkey. In his case, I yelped on three different occasions, only the first of which was answered by a gobbler. I just stayed quiet and in one hour and fifty minutes he walked out of the woods into our small field and from a pop up blind my youngster poll axed him with one shot. I love the wisdom of your comments.
I was wondering if anyone could tell me what I need to do to get involved with the turkey calling competitions? I looked on the NWTF website and the only event they show is The World Turkey Calling Championship in Mobile, AL. Are there qualifying events that are held locally?

Good video, just like duck hunting I am learning to be a bit more patient and selective in calling, it pays off to be conservative sometimes.
I've killed several by being silent and just scratching leaves.
hess man every turkeys gotta walk and scratch up food but not all Yelp. Can’t ever over scratch.
Makes more sense than any tip of head so far! I made ☝️ cluck last year before session on a Tom to locate him. Never called again. 30 minutes passed. Next thing I knew he was drumming 15 yards behind me . Never thought he’d Sneak up behind me.

The hardest thing is not calling
I've said so many times this very thing! Sometimes all we have to be more patient than him. The problem is, 90% of the turkey hunting videos are constantly call for the gobbling and the viewers do the same thing. Huge mistake!
Not using decoys is also very effective. I see too many people using decoys and relying too much on them. Its is especially effective inside the woods.

Thank you,thank you for sharing that .Im an avid Turkey hunter and hunt tough swamp Turkey's here in S.C.these birds you have to let him know you're there and shut up,scratch in the leaves,flap a wing or what ever but do not make another sound because they will literally shut up.It took me a few years to figure them out.like hunting dang ghost! If I hear one I know to shut up but what if you dont hear anything?

Aaron the best thing you can do is scout for sign and of course listen for gobbles ; but gobblers don't always gobble. Slip around the woods and soft call about every hundred or so yards, listen and look. If you don't hear or see any birds go set up in an area that has good sign such as dust bowls and so forth. my favorite is strut marks, letting me know there is a gobbler in the area. how often to call, well that just takes time in the woods cause every bird is different. this is my approach anyway and works for me. hope you get one man. Opening day for me in Ga is tomorrow..

The only problem is where I'm hunting is at the edge of a corn feild.
I can't really do alot of run and gun bceause the rest of the property isn't ours.

Mastering Silence and Movement - one false move and all the pricey prep, cammo and calls matter not! That's why I think blinds are a better way to go - if you can't sit still. . After hours of silence and nothing happening, it's hard not to impulsively scratch your brow or clear your throat. Countless hours of not hunting have conditioned us thus.
Every spring I hear and see hens that call almost continuously while staying in the same location for as long as an hour. Yes, timed with a watch not guessing. It happens. Last spring when a hen was doing that about 50 yards from me she triggered toms to gobble more than 150 times. Yes, I actually kept track and quit counting at 150. She then picked around in my decoys for 30 minutes.
One method does not work everyday everywhere. Learn to read the birds.
Used this tactic again this morning. Guided my son to his first bird-25 lbs.

Did you ever notice when real turkeys carry on after fly down they all shut up after several minutes? If they're calling a lot you can call a lot and get away with it. When they shut up, you shut up. It's the natural thing to do. Put your calls away, that's the best solution to over calling.
Took me a good number of years to realize that you don't have to be great at calling , to call in turkeys....you just need to be good at shutting up. Last year was the first year that I really honestly tried this and its a HUGE game changer....if a bird answers you, he knows RIGHT where you are.

darrell taggart hey, you listen to this guy and you will get turkeys. I tried some of his techniques and bagged two so far this season, and I know I'll get my fall turkey this year too. He knows his stuff. I'm hunting in WV so not to far from you. Going silent really works on some of those hung up gobblers. When they are really stuck throw your call sound away from you and call a little softer. Sometimes that's all it takes to get his attention and think that old hens leaving him. Killed my biggest one ever using that trick.
