- How To Turkey Call With Mouth Calls And Friction Calls. NOTICE: This video is best viewed on a phone to hear the sounds at a better mix ration.
This is beyond basics of turkey calling tips. Turkey calls are wide in variety. Mouth calls dominate much of turkey calling, and in this video on how to call turkeys, Jason Cruise, host of Mossberg's Rugged American Hunter series, you will learn turkey calling tips that are focused on one major foundation: the plain yelp of a hen.
How to call turkeys with a mouth call, or how to call turkeys will a box call, is not nearly as important as how to yelp like a turkey and do it with realism.
This is more than just turkey calling basics. It's about going deeper.
Jason Cruise is going to give you insights on how to turkey call with a box call, mouth call mechanics and insider secrets on how to use mouth calls like single yelps and skips, and he will cover how to call turkeys with calls like the no frills Push Pull from Knight and Hale. www.mossberg.com

A friend sent me a link to this video and am I ever glad he did. This was my first year ever hunting turkey and prior to heading out to hunt, I've watched my share of turkey calling videos. While this video has many excellent points of advice, one of the main points I took to the field and employed was the "less is more" tip. On the final day of my tag, I was set up in an area I had seen a tom several times on multiple days. I was pretty sure I heard what I thought were a few hen clucks coming from behind me. Rather than responding with a long series of calls, I used my slate call to produce a single cluck, short pause, followed by a double cluck. About 10 minutes later here comes a tom, in full strut, and I harvested my first ever turkey! Great information in this and definitely helped me avoid the mistake of making long and numerous calls.
I have to say, this series is BY FAR AND AWAY the most helpful for someone who wants to start hunting turkey. Makes me more proud to have been a Mossberg guy all my life.
Adam Costilla I love my mossberg .308
I totally agree, I wish this had been around when I started turkey hunting. As a lefty shooter I love how Mossberg caters to us southpaws.
I just shot my first bird after 2 1/2 years of hunting. I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you! Unfortunately my family didn’t hunt and I didn’t have mentors in turkey hunting like I found for deer. I sincerely believe that I could not have done it with out your videos, along with several other folks here on you tube. I can’t tell you how many times i watched this video when I worked on my calling. Thank you again!
Truly one of the most informative videos I’ve found online. Thank you for making this!!
You're videos are the best. Most information and best how to videos. Too many guys putting info out not even close to yours. Especially mouth calls. Thanks so much.
I thought I could call birds, I'm learning idk jack. This guy makes sense
Get on shane simpson, calling all turkeys, he's the truth....
As a beginer this is big help and i want to give credit to this guy for helping
Awesome Instruction, THANK YOU! I've hunted my whole life, but this is the first time I'm going to venture into Spring Turkey in South Dakota, great information. Each of my 3 son's got a Mossberg 500 for their 12th birthday. I have 2 of my own as well as a 930 I picked up last year. Great value guns.
Have used Mossbergs for over 35 years. Recommended and sold them while working for Scheels. My 835 Ulti Mag has taken a lot of turkey, deer and doves. It’s my favorite shotgun.
This is definitely the best calling vid I’ve seen thus far. Thanks
I make turkey box calls, and this is good information. I love the box call as well. God bless, yes I subscribed........Thanks for info to help out hunters.
Very informative! Awesome!
nice tips. about the 5th time watching always good to get a refresher the night before my Week off.
Thanks Keith! Hope turkey season goes well for you. - Mossberg
I didn't know I wanted a Mossberg until the last minute of the video!
Thank you for actually being able to explain in full detail on why things work, im honestly saying jason cruise taught me how to spring turkey hunt and 4 years into hunting the toms of Virginia ive killed 5 that scored over 78.
How do you score a Turkey? I musta missed something
@@gheft762 you grab him like a football, and launch it to an open reciever (tight ends have good hands also) down field. Touchdown!!
Great video. My pawpaw harvested many a turkey, with a box call, push pull, and pot call
Thanks Will!
thank you, trying to get better at the calls
This guy knows his stuff! He really simplifies the complex language of calling.
i thought he knew what he was talking about until he made a video saying cluck and purr is an alert
The Preserve nothing simple how he explained it and every call he did sounds the same to me
Hello friend ... we asked Jason to respond. Here's Jason Cruise's response:
There are (2) variations of cluck and purr. One is a feeding purr, which often has a cluck to it. However, you have to be within mere feet of a hen to hear it. It's similar to a house cat purring when you pet them. It's very, very soft and gentle.
Literally most of the time when you hear a hen clucking and purr - it's really a cluck and putt. And that's what so many, in fact I'd say, that's what 99% of hunters think they are hearing - a cluck and purr - and it is not!!!!
Therefore, stay away from it. A cluck and purr is so soft it might make a gobbler close the last few feet but he's got to be close to hear it in most cases; not all, but most cases.
A Cluck and Purr is just not a call needed in most cases to close the deal; and I've found that 99% of hunters do not know how to use it and end up clucking and putting - thinking they are calling a tom into range when in fact they are alerting him. - Jason Cruise
@@MossbergCorp thank you so much for explaining this!! Today was my 3rd day hunting gobbler's...my first hunting experience...I picked quite a game animal to start with lol!! I found a roost towards the end of the morning...will use these tips tomorrow!
This video is helping me alot. It's my first year turkey hunting. I go on May 18th. I'll let you guys know if I get one. Thanks for the advice.
Ultimag is the best, I never thought I would go mossberg. Turkeys ducks and geese all day long.
Love my Mossberg 500A with XXFull choke tube and a barrel mounted push-pull call.
Great video. Very informative. I still hunt with a mossberg 500 passed down to me from my dad. He's since gone but the tradition lives on every spring.
Oil it up, and pass it on to the next generation when you're done with it
@@noro305 that's the plan. Hopefully it'll see many more generations to come.
Biggest gobbler I have taken was with Knight & Hale push/pull Tom Coffin. Still a great call after 10 years of use! This guy is right! Carry them all in your vest. When my push/pull didn't work, my box call did and sometimes the mouth call. Great video!
I’m new here, this mouth calling Turkeys sounds similar to calling ducks in a sense...pretty cool
That’s my pastor 💪💪💪
Bring back Jason Cruise!!!! PLEASE
Damn I’ve been loving these videos. They are so informative for my first turkey hunt this year.
Sweet love it
Love my mossberg 500
And here I am making turkey calls by mouth only to realize guys are using a chip in their mouths for them 🤔 lol well I guess I'll find out this weekend if my call is good enough 😄
that boy good!
Nice beginner level calling video....
The push , pull makes the best and easiest purs .
This is a good video, I am a big fan of box calls and wondering what box is that your using?
Hey Friend ... Jason responded "that is a custom call that was made for me a long time ago. It's a paddle call that probably weighs 6 ounces! I can tell you that it's made of a cherry lid, and a poplar box."
hopefully i get good enough to get one.
Me clicked a video about mouth calls also him no today we going to be leading about mouth calls
The push and pull call is my favorite cause of the easy use but I can't find them anywhere
The striker and slate call that you were using in this video looks just like an old call I have. It’s my favorite. I believe the brand was Smithfield. Everything looks identical and I can’t find them anywhere. I have used it so much that the brand name has came off. I will cry if I lose it. My uncle gave it to me about 25 years ago. It’s very old but my go to. I want another similar. Please help! Thanks for the videos! It helps so much!
I've learned allot from watching his videos
Hey thanks for letting us know Mikel. - Mossberg
835 user here. Been using long beards with good results. But going to pattern the federal tss in a couple of weeks.
Federal flight control wad with the accumag choke is the perfect combo.
Excellent informative video, but having music playing in the background over the calls you are making makes it hard to really hear exactly what you are doing. Definitely could do without the background music on this type of video.
Thanks for the feedback. Hope your turkey season goes well.
Turkey box call
Mike Gibler the easiest one for me anyways
great tips..my first turkey season..push pull magnetic..
central florida Lake county!
Cool
Not sure what you mean when you talk about mouth call tape. Can you zoom in on it? I always trim my call to fit better. Love all your videos. Thanks 🦃
walmark45 what you are trimming is what he is referring to as tape
In Florida, our season is winding down. Birds were a little off this year, I think they started early because of the warm winter. Or they are just messed up, as I see hens and gobblers, but not always together. Still seeing bachelor groups, and groups of hens, that should be on nest. Dang these confusing birds. I did get a nice (Single lone all-by- his-self at noon)Tom this weekend with my trusty Mossberg 500.
Same problem here, last season in Alabama. It was too hot, too soon and i think they reved up a bit early.
Sage advises
My new mossberg 930 is in the mail!
Did it arrive?!!

A nother one bit the dust. Hahaha
This is such a good video!
2024 and the woke movement has removed the dislike button entirely in order to not hurt these guys feelings. Very kind of them to do that. Now everyone who posts any video will get nothing but praise no matter what.
Let’s talk turkey 🦃
New to turkey hunting. honna shorten my range on the pot. Been kicking around whether or not to buy the push pull, you sold me.
Push pull is a great call.
My 1st shot gun was a 410 mossberg
I gots me a Mossberg baby
Ok, who put thumbs down? We love turkey too ya know....haha
Mossberg 500 baby
AM hunting only in the spring?
Just a heads up. Megahertz is an astronomically high number. It literally means a million oscillations a second. I think you meant 15 Kilohertz... anything above 20KHz is outside the range of human hearing.
Yes - thank you - got the math wrong there!
What do you mean no tape on mouth calls?
Love to go Tom Turkey soon with my son.
Friction sounds better but they come to the mouth call more for me
I'm trying to listen to the sound and method of the call but the background music is very conflicting.
Hey friend try viewing this video on your smartphone. The Rugged American Hunter series is produced for the phone and you'll find a far, far better experience there. The background tracks are very subtle. - Mossberg
Mossberg 835, just trying to master that mouth call
👍❤️🇺🇸💯
I'm new to this I've only ever killed 1 Turkey and I recently bought a diaphragm and I wanted to know does mouthing chirp to yelp really work?
Depends on the caller mostly. Try Chirp, Chop, Chuck and Chaulk. One may have a better sound for you, than others. Watch videos of professional callers such as Shane Simpson or Scott Ellis. These are two of the best yelpers I have heard.
Best advise ever: don't store your calls post season. Keep them in your pocket every day and use them. I have gotten so much better just from always practicing every day. Instead of just busting out the calls 2 weeks before season.
They all sound the same to me
It's the air flow
please post on odysee and rumble.
Like the video just NOT THE STUPID MUSIC
15 hundred to 13 hundred Megahertz that is radio frequencies... Just busting your chops...
Misspoke on that one - you’re totally spot on; got the numbers wrong on that!
Crap, forgot about the "push-pull" box call. I'll have to blow the dust off of my sons and give it a shot!
How come your sons have dust on them? 😁
Why do an instructional video with music and
drum beats overriding.....?
Good stuff. Now, do it with just your voice box-nothing inserted in the mouth. The most natural animal calls are strictly by a person’s own mouth. You can control the volume and consistencies and inconsistencies much better.
All Things Magnum that's tough to do. You are right though.
Waste of time just pay the money for a decent call
Quentin Quaker Hard work is a waste? That wouldn’t have flown with folks in the old days. Too many folks like the easy way and don’t appreciate the satisfaction of earning hard work experiences. I have gotten Toms to let loose with natural calling.
Yokay cheif
@@20cameron1 I'm just saying there is not way you can call a long beard in with mouth if u can't sound good with a simple owl hoot
