What To Do When Turkey Hunting Gets Hard

  • Especially in late season, at some point, turkey hunting will get hard. It will be a grind.
Turkey calling is not just about how to use a mouth call, or turkey calling with friction vs. mouth calls. It's about knowing turkey behavior.
You cannot approach turkey calling in late season the same way just because it's still turkey season.
Turkey hunting in late season, and turkey calling in late season is fundamentally founded upon these components:
    1. Getting in close
    2. Knowing that most of the yelping is over
In this turkey hunting video, Jason Cruise, host of Mossberg's Rugged American Hunter series, is going to go over how to call turkeys that you encounter once the season gets near the end, the foliage is on the trees, and the hens are sitting more than responding.

The birds out smarted me this year in Minnesota. On the last day, I smiled and gave thanks to god for the opportunities to play in his playground.

6:36 That is one of those special places we as hunters find in our many many hours out in the woods. They are sacred and holy places. I have my spot in a holler near where I harvested my first deer. I was fortunate enough to have my dad show me his praying stump before he passed away. He would go there many times to reflect & seek guidance. Thank you for sharing a special part of yourself with us & God bless!

I watch this video every year. Since I’ve found it, I watch it a lot. I love it. I love this feeling, I love the woods, and I love the adventure. People make it better, god makes it better. Mossberg, makes it better. I love the woods and this video captures the exact feeling and journey we’re all on.

Just retired from coaching baseball and got into turkey hunting this season and the Lord blessed me last weekend with my first turkey and I’m so glad I saw this clip because as an avid outdoorsman I can say that Jason was spot on in what he said. Thanks Jason for putting the hunt into perspective and know I will start my own tradition. Thanks

I don't hunt but I like to watch people hunting. I was more in to fishing. I am disabled now so don't get to fish much anymore. I have a lot of fun watch the guys on u tude do their thing. Lost my Daddy in 2017 just before he turned 99-year-old done a lot of thing with him. Miss him everyday. Talked to him everyday. Still want to call him everyday. Stay safe and God bless you.

Perfect, thank you for sharing this. My father passed away two years ago January, so turkey season 2014 was the last one we hunted together. But he's with me every time I pass near or sit at "his spots", or when I sit at the big old oak where I killed my biggest tom to date, or when I think of the place I took him to kill his first (and only) Rio. Actually, he's always with me, and I'm taking my kids and remembering their Grandpa when I do. His last turkey fan and spurs hang in my son's room, and I felt like just maybe I was doing things right when my son sat down with me in the woods last week and he said "Hey, this is where Grandpa killed the turkey for me!". It is absolutely all about the people and being out in God's great places. Bless you and all the best!

The end of this story restores ones faith in a universal human nature that transcends countries, boundaries and boarders. Peace and best wishes from New Zealand. I have never hunted Turkey the way that you guys do. I have imported turkey calls from America to try what you do. So thanks for the lessons. The Turkeys that I have captured killed and eaten have all been captured by hand on the run. You wait for a really windy day and drive to where you know the birds are at. You stalk and watch, pick the biggest Tom, burst from cover and run him down. You dive on him and dispatch him with a stout stick to the head. I am sixty now and cannot sprint any more so calling is the skill I must learn, never too old right.

Very well spoken.God has blessed me this season.I have been doing a lot of praying as of late. With today's situations and all this covid19 running wild,I pray for protection and for those affected. It was a slow, quite morning for hunting. Not in an audible voice but in my spirit God said go to this certain area of the property I've got something for you.So I went, and their were 6 toms waiting there for I literally could have tagged out in less than 30 seconds.I harvested 1 ( Georgia bag limit 3 Tom's),I bowed on my knees, raised my hands to Heaven and gave the Great Creator the thanks and praise He is worthy of.Less than 2weeks later on the same property God showed up on the scene again.I was blessed to call in and witness my grandson harvest his 1st bird ever ( 22.6 lbs 11inch beard and 1 1/2 inch bird.We are Pentecostal, so you can imagine what went on that morning. So yeah we ( Hunters ) should pray at the beginning, any other time during the season and as well at the close of the season. It only takes a few minutes to ask for blessings on your season or for allowing you to harvest one of His magnificent creations. If nothing else thank Him for giving you the health, strength and ability to get out and enjoy the sights and sounds of His creations.

I am 16 and I hunt with my dad as much as possible. You touched on the part about not remembering how many animals you've killed, but about different moments of every hunt, and the special memories you share with other people. My dad and I have several places in the woods that we like to go and visit, because of the memories it brings back to us. I love what you said about the gravy and biscuits. Its not about getting the animal, its about these memories we get to keep with us till the end of our lives. Harvesting an animal is just a bonus.
Hunting is extremely special to me, and I will never forget the memories I share with my dad.
    This is why we hunt.

I look at hunting in general like this. I love the opportunity to just be able to hunt. If I harvest something it’s icing on the cake or as Jason states, gravy on the biscuit. I’m 57 years old and I’ve only killed three bucks. I only started turkey hunting at age 55 in 2017

Jason, You talked about life tradition and the things that you take with you as you get older. I’m 44, an archer a father of a 4 yo daughter and a 5 yo son. I’ve already put a bow in my sons hands at 5 years old. I’ve been wanting to hunt for sometime now but have always waited for someone else to take me “under their wing”. This is my year. I bought a new bow after not having one for almost 20 year. I’m not waiting for anyone this year. It would be nice to have some guidance, but not at the expense of missing out. Thanks for the videos.

Thank you both for such a fantastic video, especially the end. I shot my first Turkeys back in '99 with my brother Frank, who passed away in 2003 at the age of 48. He was a true hunter, and along with my father who died in 2015, we hunted together and loved nothing more then being in the woods. I moved to southern Vermont in Dec. 2014 and hunted last spring for the first time. I had to use a friends gun, a side by side, and I missed the first shot, winged him with the 2nd shot, but, he took off. That Tom was callin' up a storm, he had kept his distance, circling on the other side of a pasture rise, keeping himself out of my reach. He started his calls on the edge of another pasture under a line of single oaks, and I , knowing I had nothing to lose, (he already rejected my attempts at cluckin' and yelpin')so stalked him in an open field, very slowly, keeping myself out of his sight and approaching as close as I could standing up straight. This spring i'm back with my own Mossberg 88 and have already had 3 great days, in mostly rain, looking forward to baggin' my first Vermont Tom. Thank you so much for your comments and your sentiment. I'm 65 and each time I hunt it's with my dear brother and father, who I know are lookin down on me laughing with me as I have a great time in our Green Mountains. These are great assets to us all keep them coming!

I got a pretty tricky scenario for ya. In North Florida, throughout ALL of the turkey season, from beginning to end, the trees are plentifully filled with bright green leaves because it doesn't take long for it all to grow back since the winters aren't harsh enough to kill most shrubs or cause most trees to drop a decent amount of their leaves, and the ground brush is as nasty as it gets. In most areas on my property (unless you're hunting over the rare occurrence that is a field/opening), you can't see much past 20-30 yards. You never see the turkeys until they're just about in your lap. Therefore, keeping an eye on a bird after he flies down from the roost is not possible, unless you're sitting under the exact tree he flies down from! xD Y'all have any suggestions/tips for hunting that difficult terrain? Can any of y'all relate to my experience? I would love to hear about it! Thanks and God bless!

Turkey hunting is an incredible sport and although I enjoy harvesting a big tom it is just not what it is all about. I hunted a trophy tom for two days and was on him three times. The fourth time he came in hot at 2:00 PM... he walked up within 7 yards and as hard as it is to believe I could not take the shot due to he never went be hind a tree so I could mount my gun properly. The turkey ended up seeing me and took out of there so fast I had no chance. I beat myself up for days about what I could have done differently. However, over time I came to the realization that not many people get a turkey up that close and in reality this was a "catch and release" hunt.
