Awesome instructions Matt you are the best Turkey educator period! Who else has killed turkeys because of Matt Dale’s teaching ? Let’s give Matt a thumbs up and show support !👇
I am a novice. I called in a jake for my 13 year old daughter today after watching your video. I was quiet at the right time and she smoked this bird at 30 yards. An epic experience for us. Thanks for the tips!
This is one of your best because you went slow while you taught. Most of the time you crack me up on how how passionate and fast you talk trying to pass all your knowledge to us.
Mr. Dale, I’ve been hunting turkey for 40+ years. I’ve made many, many mistakes when working a turkey. Experience is a great teacher but it sure is frustrating in the moment. You are doing a great service to not only inexperienced turkey hunters but also us old timers. I really enjoy your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. 👍
50 years here and your right. back in our days we had to learn so much trial and error. I started 1972 in Ozark mt. today i live surrounded by public timber and do most of my hunting where i live. i t has meant so much to me to have this sport aint nothing like turkeyeys
@@Owl4909 Absolutely! I’ve never had more fun than working a gobbler in the spring woods. I’ve enjoyed many hunts when I walked out of the woods empty handed. It’s not harvesting a turtle that’s the real reward. It’s spending time in the woods trying to trick them into shooting distance. Even if you don’t get one to take home, it’s still the best time I’ve spent in the woods.
You've helped me sharpen my turkey hunting arsenal, I've only been hunting turkeys about 7 years and I've learned alot, and had great success. Thanks for your videos sir. Looking forward to the next one! 🤙🏼
Happy to see a new video. I had a turkey hang up on the other side of a stone wall . He was on private land and I was on public I could have grabbed him . He never crossed over and lived to strut again .Can't wait for turkey season to open in New Hampshire. Good luck this year.
Having 35 years of turkey hunting experience under my belt and twice that amount of beards on the wall, I'm always curious and a little suspicious of "turkey hunting videos." Sincerely, this was the best video I've ever seen on the subject and absolutely spot on. Great job and presentation of content! It's not much, but I subscribed. Glad that there are guys like you out there putting out high quality content that the average person can use and benefit from. Thank you.
I FINALLY sealed the deal on a little young bird with my crossbow yesterday. Wanted to thank you ,these videos had a HUGE part in my success and I cant tell you how much i appreciate it. I literally blew it with 20...25? Birds over the last several years , for every reason you can think of. Sticking one yesterday, rates up with what i feel is one of my greatest sporting accomplishments. Thank you.
Hello Dale, I need to thank you. All your videos are by far the most accurate depiction of turkey behavior. I was able to use your techniques regarding when to call and not to call. In my first ever hunting trip/session I managed to get two birds! Thank you!
Good tips Matt. Best piece of advice I’ve learned from you is when you want to get up and move, wait 30 more minutes. This has worked for me the last 3 years. We all have that voice in our heads to get up and move if we aren’t seeing anything. Just wait another half hour. Turkey’s aren’t always vocal, and new hunters may get impatient. Just have the discipline to sit 30 more minutes. You will be amazed at your success.
Had that happen this morning. I was ready to go after a Tom passed out of range. Then 25 mins later then two giant Tom’s walked out. Still missed with my bow but 🤷🏻♂️
My question is but if I haven’t heard anything why am I sitting? Like did I just pick a random spot I thought was good and then start calling to hope to draw one In? (I’m new lol)
@@ryanjones3043If you located a bird or birds, set a plan to sit and call them in. Even if you only heard one gobble, it does not mean he’s not there and working your way. If you cant locate one by shock calling or hen calling, look for turkey sign and post up. Matt put out a really good video the other day going over this scenario. Good luck this year mate!
Learned the hard way just as you described. Three nice Toms strutting in place 130 yards away across cut corn field. Calling and calling trying to get them off a hen that one gobbler mounted. I didn't have decoys with me that day. Yesterday talked with those three again and when they came running I shut it down until they turned their backs at 55 yards upon seeing decoys but no sound. Hit them with a mouth call and they immediately turned back towards my decoys. Dropped the biggest one (I think) at 42 yards. Need to perfect my calling but can't complain getting my first turkey my first year turkey hunting
Thanks Matt.. I have killed many turkeys in southern Ohio, Vinton and Hocking counties.. your videos teach me things I may have overlooked over the years and keep me in the seat longer! I send your videos to my son and really enjoy your knowledge and keeps me fired up. Thanks and good luck for 2023!! 🦃
Really enjoy your videos Matt.. I have been turkey hunting for 31 years.. I’m an addict and can’t wait for season to open every year.. I often learn something new watching your videos.
Just started practicing on an old Lynch Box I found in an elderly widow basement while helping her with her plumbing. Her husband was a Turkey hunter and wanted me to have it. She said he had bagged many turkeys over the year’s with that box call. I’m listening to videos on how to hunt and subscribed to your channel in hopes of learning how to call. Thanks for your videos.
Been spring gobbler hunting for over 25 years. Just came across Dale Outdoors for the first time a week ago. Dale is SPOT ON with all his tips and advise. Believe me I learned by the mistakes he points out. Best advise I’ve come across wether UA-cam, Tv or anything else. New subscriber here.
I just want to say thanks for the information. I would of never got the gobbler that i shot with a bow today. Came from 180 yards in to getting a 10 yard shot. Thanks so much!!
Great knowledge shared as always Matt, I try to take in every bit of information you give when you upload something new. I just ordered the old sly mouth call can’t wait to try it out here in about a month for youth season. Gonna try getting the little guy on his first gobbler!
Great video Matt. Been watching you for several years. I have tried aggressive calls on a few hung up gobblers before. Every so often I can get them to come in. Not often, but sometimes. What also has happened to me is on occasion I end up calling in a completely different Turkey I never knew was there, that never called at all. Last time it happened was a couple of years ago a mature Tom I was calling to had hens and wasn’t leaving them. Got aggressive and after a few back and forth conversations, I hear a different bird spitting and drumming directly behind me. Ended harvesting that bird. That is why Turkey hunting is so fun and challenging. Thanks for the content, keep it coming. Good luck this season.
Thank you so much for this video. I’m really glad you talked about how to call when a turkey is on the other side of a fence on a neighbor’s property. Everything I’ve been told and read has said to stop calling once a gobbler is approaching, and I’ve had 3 situations in the last couple days where gobblers have hung up on the other side of a fence and I stayed quiet hoping they’d come over, and only tried calling again once they started to leave. I’ll try calling more aggressively next time. Thanks again
Got my first turkey in the true sense of turkey hunting this past Saturday. Called that sucker in from an astronomical distance and placed him in the bed if the truck. Im am hooked. Thanx4 the info my friend. You have helped me so much with your info👊🏻
Yesterday I took a young hunter hunting and we got into this field and struck up some birds on the neighboring property, it is late season here is TN and normally I would soft call , but this time I did a lot of cutting added with long sequences of yelps and it wasn’t long 2 Tom’s came under the fence and came right in our laps and the hunter was able to harvest his first bird!

When everything else fails as you talked about in this video I always try it. I have had some awesome hunts because of it but it has been the end of many as well 😂
Great video Dale!! Thanks for the information. I’m definitely still learning how to turkey hunt. Got my first gobbler in 2019 and boy have I made mistakes!!
I’m hunting merriams in Colorado. I know there’s a lot of small differences. I made the mistake last year of over calling when there was a turkey really close, but when he came out in front of me he was just out of shooting range and had 7 hens with him. He just sat there strutting for the longest time. Then he started leaving and I went crazy on my call and he came right up to me. Not sure if that’s an actual thing with Easter a but merriams like to not come in
Just got back from my first turkey hunt, and already I see what I was doing wrong in this video, 2 first time amateurs out together, we had eyes on birds, one morning a good 6 different gobblers all around us, just over calling and stuck in bushes with no sight lines to see anything. Needless to say, turkey wins this hunt, I get to try again on May 6th
Did this last year and got a turkey to come from someone else's property the tom was about 500 yards away gobbling. I located him down in a bottom field he came up a hill through trees and crossed a fence right into range.
I had a hung up Tom's with hens last year. We got within ear shot we could hear the hens he was with. I soft called. He would gobble and his hens would call. When the hens started calling. When the two groups of hens found each other I guess they found that annoying hen cause they all shut up. We had 20 plus birds within 30 yards. We never could get a good ethical shot on the Tom. But still amazing hunt
Last year was the first year I turkey hunted and I had a big Tom come in to about 70 yards however all I had was a 20 gauge with a modified choke so I couldn’t shoot him ,I saw him working to my decoys and I got excited and started calling to him and he strutted and got hung up out of range from me and he eventually walked away from me
I've sealed the deal a few times with a half dozen oddly spaced out feeding putts and leaf scratching. Pretty much anything after the morning gravel pick.
In regard to the last part where one would “throw the kitchen sink” once that turkey crosses the barrier and starts coming to you, is that when you would stop calling, Dale? Or would you continue calling the turkey in until you make the shot? Thanks & great video!!!
I had two hens and three Toms across a property line in 2017 hunting in Minnesota. I did everything I could to agitate the the hens and after 40 minutes they came looking for me and the Toms followed ! I killed a gobbler with 5 beards totaling over 26 inches and the bird scored 90.25. Not a high score by national standards, but it is for Minnesota.
I hunt a river and I’ve had em where I “throw the kitchen sink at em” but then they come flying over and shut up and never seen em again. I’m sure it’ll happen again so when they don’t come right over then what do you do
If you come in at sunrise a little too late and the birds are fired up in the tree and you accidentally push them off and they fly about 150 yards to another tree what do you do ?
I had an Eastern wait 55 minutes before coming in. - He was on the roost gobbling, I was 125 yards away, he flew down & began mating hen after hen. After about 2 hours he walked off toward the North. - That was my chance to get into position. I tip-toed up a hollow using the steep bank on each side for cover. When I got to where he was gobbling & mating hens I saw an old dead tree. I scratched a place, being easy, trying to sound like a turkey. Once in a sitting position I hit a loud cut on a double reeve. He answered within seconds approx. 300 yards to the North. I put the callers away & just waited. He never gobbled again until he was right where he flew down, 30 yards in front of me..... BOOM! ~ Led in the head, gobbler took a ride in my truck. 24-lbs. 12" beard, & 1-1/4" spurs. ... I got in his safe place & made a believer out of him, he came back but sure took his time. On another hunt I had to sit motionless for 2-hours while the gobbler stood looking toward me the whole time until he broke & came another 20 yards before I got him... you gotta love it!
Im a young hunter at the age of 23. Been turkey huntin since about 6 years old. The biggest turkey i killed had 36 inches of beard (4 beards) and NO spurs. He just had knubs. Didnt have him mounted bc i didnt realize at the time what i just killed. Still regret it to this day. I hunt down in south Louisiana.
About blind calling if i don't see or hear gobbles? Should you be aggressive to get a response or get a quiet Tom to come your direction esp if i have a couple decoys, jake & hen? Thx

In regard to the last part where one would “throw the kitchen sink” once that turkey crosses the barrier and starts coming to you, is that when you would stop calling, Dale? Or would you continue calling the turkey in until you make the shot? Thanks & great video!!!
Great stuff!
We need to get more of the kids to hunt instead of playing on the phone all day.
GREAT INFO THANKS
I hunt a river and I’ve had em where I “throw the kitchen sink at em” but then they come flying over and shut up and never seen em again. I’m sure it’ll happen again so when they don’t come right over then what do you do
Great info to learn from, but you know it was funny that you mistook a turkey for a cow, ha ha
GREAT video! Just subscribed!🙏
Thanks for the great video. Now I know why I did not get a bird yesterday. I am new to turkey hunting. Where do I find a link to your turkey calls.
I've watched entire flocks go under a taught barb wire fence. They can be stupid but they know how to go under lol.
Most gobblers just run in unless they are pressured birds. The biggest longbeards I killed were hot on any Mid April yelp and then purrs
Hey Dale awesome video and thanks for sharing it!!! What mouth call are you running in this video? Thanks!!!
Thank you sir very good info 100% truth
I love your video's
I love your enthusiasm, but I’m wondering how you avoid getting busted while calling with such animation. 🤣
Thanks for the info
How often you use decoy?
Can you do a video on your gun setup it looks interesting?
Great Video!
About blind calling if i don't see or hear gobbles? Should you be aggressive to get a response or get a quiet Tom to come your direction esp if i have a couple decoys, jake & hen? Thx
Watch this video like 6 times and today and I still hung up a gobbler in a field because I over called and ruined my entire hunt.
Good stuff!
