With no E3 direct, they'll likely be doing this for most of the games that were going to be announced then, as the trailers are ready.
In the Nintendo Direct they revealed Color Splash, there was like no build-up whatsoever either.

That's a REALLY good question. Nintendo is very tight-lipped so I'm shocked as so many people knew about a new Paper Mario this year.
Protendo It seemed inevitable because there’s usually a 3-4 year gap between every paper mario release, and all eyes were on a new potential game due to the backlash from the last two games.
There are rumours that don't come from credible souces, but people making well-founded guesses. And since there has been a Paper Mario game on every Nintendo home console (and 3DS) since the N64, it was bound to happen.
The switch port of The Witcher 3 was rumoured for ages and a lot of people knew it was happening from VA saying so in tweets months before it was announced
@B-Bum because so many people want it and were hoping to will it into existence. And while partners do return, the old battle system, which I've seen many rumours claiming will also return, does not.

Footage of the bob-omb companion following Mario in the tall grass area has been found. They follow and are part of the story. Only thing we don't know is if they're involved in the battle system.

What if, we get a generic bob-omb and toad party members but we can customise them with odyssey like costumes so that’s why there’s an explorer toad and a judo toad, they’re costumes that they can wear and could be armor if they wanted stat benefits

Just to explain how the battle system works: It's back to being how it was in the original and TYD, but the Ring Rotation is new. This allows the player to rotate certain parts of the stage and line up enemies to increase damage to those enemies. However, these are limited, so you can't continuously line them up and cheese the fight. It's basically there in case you're in a pinch.

@Not Yet change for the sake of change isn't always good. Changes should be made to improve on some of the shortcomings of a game, not because you need some sort and f gimmick to sell a game. Honestly if they just made thousand year door 2 with this new graphical style people wouldn't complain that it wasn't different enough

SmokeSesh520 Back un the early 2000s, everyone wanted 2D Mario platformer to come back. We got New Super Mario Bros, excellent, then Wii.....then 2......then U....then U Deluxe.
They don’t want to repeat the same mistake again. They want to make something original and new but based on the original system (because they get the sticker/card changes were not good, but don’t want to do the same game) Just by how NSMB started...but they don’t want to make the same game again.
People then will be annoyed and say: ITS THE SAME GAME, NOTHING IS NEW, WHY WOULD I BUY THE SAME GAME

Erik McQuarrie Sounds like the partners are expanding the menu? I mean getting toad allows you to cheer (some kind of audience buff). Olivia gives you a hint. Could mean that the “partner” system are options that aid you in battle. It’s not a partner system. It’s more like when you get a star power in TTYD.
The battle system video looks like it was filmed around the beginning of the game because it takes place at a basic grassy area with only goombas to fight, so maybe there’s not a partner icon because Mario doesn’t have partners that early on in the game(other than Olivia). I’m probably wrong, but it’s still too early to be completely sure.

I was able to read and look in the text in the gameplay clip:
The text next to Olivia's picture says "Hint"
Next to the toad it basically says "aid, help, reinforcement"
When it's selecting the jump attack there are two words above it. Next to the L it says something along the lines of "weapon" and next to the R it says "item"

There is an english screenshot, Toad is cheer meaning it is likely related to the audience.
The bomb-omb might have some uniqueness behind the design that isnt shown in the trailer. Has anybody realized the bomb-omb has no fuse to detonate itself?
I wonder if he had already detonated, which could explain his amnesia.

There are partners, and you can use them in battle, you can see this in the Chinese trailer which has been deleted.

@@mrconroy4672 Part of what made Paper Mario 64 and TTYD so good and memorable is Mario making new friends and they join with Mario's quest. You get to see Mario's chemistry with these characters and how these characters grow throughout the journey. Let alone they also varied the gameplay with them using their abilities in the Overworld and you can control them through battle, which also varies the battle system.
I think having partners in battle is so important purely because they vary the gameplay, if its just Mario fighting you only have his attacks. Even if the partners only give Mario new attacks that would be a step in the right direction

I feel like if it wasn't for the worldwide crisis, this would've been in the Mini Direct and some previous and future announcements that have/may come out like this were meant for it or E3. Nintendo have had to adapt and we just have to be patient. And if being a One Piece manga reader taught me anything... xD

@@rainyday806 Nintendo like to give us something once a month to every 3 months. We got Tokyo Mirage Sessions in January, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and Animal Crossing in March, Xenoblade Definitive this month and this is their mid-year title like Mario Maker 2 was last year.

For example, I played Tetris 99 for the first time in months thanks to the current Animal Crossing event and finally managed to score my first ever 1st place. Meanwhile, I honestly haven't played anything on my PS4 in a month since I first played FF7R. xD
I...actually don't know how to feel about this. I'm hyped and cautious at the same time.
Partners alone wont save the franchise from what its become. I certainly wouldnt be opposed to adding them back in..But the Leveling up aspect with the badges is what made the original 2 so great. As well as a fantastic cast of supporting characters and superbly written chapters. I doubt well ever see it truly return to form..Nintendo clearly doesnt seem to get it.
The orange circle in the battlefield looks big enough for multiple characters. It also seems like the field is SUPER early in the game.

If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s confirmed. Partners are back. Gamexplain posted a video of the taken down Chinese trailer of this game. In that trailer it shows a toad partner behind Mario while he’s jumping on a goomba.

I guess it's true, hiding things in plain sight is the way to go. In that Samus bit at the end, everyone seems to notice something in the trash can on the left side of the screen hiding in the background. But as far as I'm aware no one has noticed Donkey Kong's head is also there on the right, right up front...

I think you’ll have a big traveling party of those characters we saw in trailer. You travel together via boat, bowsers flying ship, etc.
I honestly really like it when the enemies team up with the Heroes to defeat a *very* bad enemy.

In the chinese trailer, which is now taken down, The little explorer toad was seen in the battle with the Boo's with Mario. There's probably gonna be partners
From the footage we saw, it seems that the card-based combat of Sticker Star and Color Splash is gone now, which I'm really excited for. While the partners themselves might not have unique designs/names, if we can use their abilities in that grid based combat thing, I would be down to try that. For example, maybe the Koopa slides in his shell forward, hitting enemies directly in front like what we saw with Mario jumping on enemies lined up while the Bob-omb blows up enemies surrounding Mario.
DustyBlind look closer buddy unfortunately not. The coliseum thing isnt the battle system. Literally a few seconds later in the trailer a battle akin to the ones from sticker star and color splash is shown. And if you look even closer on the top left corner, there appears to be an item that says “shiny boots” We’re fucked.
For the partners it looks like either you switch out the characters to do specific types of attacks (like maybe kamek or Bob-omb have attacks that are more area of effect instead of marios straight line jump attack thing) or you use the partners as like special moves thats how it looks to me from what I have seen
with this game and all of its potential and it being origami themed... I guess you can say they got a lot of *material* to work with
There is a Chinese trailer that shows the Toad archeologist in battle with Mario. The battle system menu from the Japanese "leaked" gameplay is according to the English translation an apparent return to form which is also encouraging! Fingers crossed!

Colour Splash is amazing. It's barely a RPG though. It's more of an adventure game. Oh, and this look amazing. Cannot wait!
So here's what we know about the battle system so far:
- It's set in a circular arena. Before Mario makes his move, he can rotate a limited number of rings within a limited time. Lining up similar enemies can make attacks more effective against them. It seems possible to buy more time to do this phase.
- Mario can choose a weapon to attack with, or go to a separate menu for items (the JP words up top roughly translate to "Weapon" and "Item").
- A Jump attack in general seems to target one row of enemies.
- There are also three other button commands that were shown (during the ring rotating phase) next to silhouettes of Olivia (X), the Toad (Y), and Mario (B). These translate to "Tips", "Support", and "Flee". Like I said, the Chinese trailer used to show the Toad cheering on Mario and slightly powering up his Shiny Boots attack, so maybe each partner offers a special kind of buff or attack. Olivia's command might be a Tattle or show battle tips or something.
- Enemies sometimes have an angry icon above their head. Not sure what this means yet.
At 3:02 there’s a partner and also the paper bowser bag thing was next to you too so I guess that pretty much confirms partners lol
I feel like the partners are there just to follow you throughout the story but it doesn't look like they'll participate in battles. Take a look at the battle system. Its just Mario standing in the center surrounded by enemies

@@Sp00ky649 So Mercury Steam (the ones that made Samus Returns) pitched a Metroid Fusion Remake 1st, but Nintendo didn't like it that it was about Fusion (it didn't make sense at that time i guess), BUT they did like the pitch and let MS work on Metroid 2 Remake. And the new leak (that started around January-February i believe..) was saying that " a new paper mario game is coming this year " followed by " a 2D Metroid game is also going to be revealed and release this year, is about Metroid Fusion "
I think that the partners will not directly help in battle but will provide aid and will impact the story and environment in different ways

So, the symbols on the right side of the battle screen translate to:
(X) Hint
(Y) Assist
(B) Run
So, with it having the Toad icon next to it, it looks like you'll be able to call out whatever partner you have to assist you in battle. What exactly that entails, I have no clue, but it looks like they can join you.

I'm in the same boat as you, I need full confirmation of partners, Bomb-omb appears to be in several different scenes, but not sure if they are level specific or cut-scene specific as they don't appear in the overworld when Mario is running around
The text on te side says "hint", "ouen" which i think means assistance/aid, and nigeru (run)
so i guess its a hint to the puzzle system. aid could be partners coming in for a single attack/ special move maybe?

The Chinese version of the trailer actually used to have the explorer Toad with Mario in battle when he used his Shiny Boots attack (and it seemed to do 1 more damage per stomp with him cheering). This version is currently down (much like that one video for Brawl that subtly spoiled a few unlockable fighters like Lucario), so maybe they intend to showcase what partners do later.
The Chinese version of the trailer had a clip with Mario and Traveler Toad in one of the battle arenas. Toad was edited out of the U.S. and Japanese trailers. It seemed that Nintendo noticed because not soon after, the Chinese trailer was deleted. I’m almost 100% convinced that partners are coming back

From the looks of it, the partners might be temporary, allowing you to get different ones at certain aspects of the game. . . At the very least, you're teaming up with the Koopa Kingdom.
I don't know that, it's just a wild guess. The battle system looks good enough for me to want to get into this though, so it's a day one for me.

imagine if its giving you basic enemies as partners so that you can dress them up. that would be neat.
I don't see how the partners can only be story related and not used in battle only because Bob-Omb was in two different locations. The Ninji Town and the red mountain, which I think are all the blue ribbon, and on the boat to go to the purple ribbon.

In China in the fight with the boos in the Chinese trailer a little explorer toad is in the Mario circle cheering for you as you jump on the boos.
I believe we have partners because in the Chinese reveal trailer there was a toad with Mario on the battle filed. The video might still be on UA-cam.
The last part... Mario is wearing Samus helmit from the Metroid Series
I'm with Roger, I want to be excited but I don't want to be left burnt with disappointment and honestly if the gameplay is good I'll accept everything else

The music and visuals are so good
To me, everything in this game looks really great so far but the only thing lacking is character diversification. No custom costumes or anything
The Japanese website says something along the lines of saying heartfelt hellos to new friends as well as heartfelt goodbyes, implying that they want you to build a relationship with these characters. They might be in battles because in the Chinese trailer which was deleted it showed that explorer toad looking serious next to Mario while he was battling. however it is possible that partners may have some specific uses outside of battle as well like the different Pixles in Super Paper Mario. Like How Tippy/Timpani was able to scan enemies for info in battle or how Boomer was able to blow up enemies with unlimited defense or how Thudley was able to grab and throw projectiles at enemies. If the last part turns out to be true, We could at least get some kind of battle system that combines the Stage combat from The Thousand Year Door and Specific Character traits from outside of battle in Super Paper Mario. Which would already be a lot better than the last three games. I think that the reason a lot of people hate Super Paper Mario is simply because there is no turn based battles but only side scrolling platform based ones instead. But Super Paper Mario still had great and fully fleshed out original characters, unique hidden secrets, original puzzles that required some thought, decent challenges, and a fully fleshed out and pretty dark story. The biggest complaints I have is that Inventory was pretty limited and the post game was really just a bunch of useless grinding. But other than that, I think for at least the main portion of the game, Super Paper Mario is still a good game. It just simply isn't fair to compare it to the previous two games. Because it tried to do something different while combing RPG based elements with Mario's original Side scrolling platformer roots. Besides, it's still easily way better than the three other games that came after it. Overall, I think that this game will be at least as good as Super Paper Mario and honestly that's more than enough for me. And any resemblance to games before Sticker Star is a major step in the right direction, just not quite there yet.

I'm extremely unconvinced by this, I'll wait to see maybe a good chunk of a playthrough first.
I have zero faith at this point. And you want to know what tips me off the most that the particular crew behind these newer Paper Mario games haven't any idea of what makes the series good?
They're still treating the characters like they're made of paper in-universe.
It's small but it reflects the larger misunderstanding that this team has had about this series. Granted, it might be a matter of translation but even then, we're seeing paper-craft stuff incorporated into nearly every facet of the recent games.
The first paper mario game was 2D because of the N64's technical limitations.
The second was mostly just re-using the aesthetic from the first for similar reasons but used it to construct more elaborate worlds.
The actual gameplay and worlds and stories of those games had little to nothing to do with paper as an idea, and only Super Paper Mario really played around with the idea of the Paper Mario world being canonically 2D but it didn't factor that much into the plot or the characters.
Tanabe (the producer) has left me with very little confidence. He's claimed that Miyamoto asked him to only use Super Mario World designs in the last two Paper Mario games, but Mario Odyssey clearly shows that there's some willingness to make new designs and use new art styles for the hell of it.
I'm confused at what the critique is? That they *shouldn't* have gone with the paper aesthetic for paper mario?

The idea of default enemies being partners is interesting, I'm assuming most of the kingdom is origami therefore anything flat becomes distinct.

Having "partners' is just a quarter of what would make this game Great again. You have to have the Gameplay (generally speaking, RPG like elements) as well.............. Story line wise, I think it'll be Great! Hopefully the music would be just as good ! :-)

I have never played the Paper Mario series before, but I really think that this iteration of the series would spark a great interest for me to really try it out because everything about it is amazing!

Gamexplain posted a video with the Chinese trailer for this game that got taken down by Nintendo, and in that trailer the only difference is that during the combat portion, it shows a Toad in an explorer outfit standing in the middle of the arena with Mario!

About the icons at the bottom right : the top one is for tips, the bottom is for escaping. Not sure about the meaning of the middle one's japanese word (Ouen). But in any case this looks mike the first tutorial to battle so I doubt Mario would have any partners at this point.
